TRANSFIGURATION (The Last
Sunday of Epiphany)
When Jesus goes to the mountain with
Peter, James and John, He is
transfigured. We will celebrate and
remember this transfiguration on February 15.
Jesus is transfigured by God, and God speaks:
“This is my Son, the Beloved; listen to him!”
(Mark 9:2-9) We are called to listen to Jesus,
and by his teaching, we live our lives as
children of God. Jesus lived his life intimately
with the disciples. We too are called upon, as
part of our stewardship, to live our lives with
love and compassion with those whom God
has given us. Your generous offerings help us
to live and proclaim God’s love at St. Mark’s. –
Thank you, Pastor Chuck

Inspirations From Pastor Chuck
“LENTEN”
When you work for the church it seems as if one church season, or to put it
another way, it seems as if one holiday runs right into another. I think my staff
would agree. In this case, we’ve barely taken down all the decorations in the
church, meetings rooms and Sunday School classrooms, then we turn our
attention to Lent, Holy Week, and, yes, Easter.
Back in Advent, I guess it was early December, I received a packet of
Lenten materials. Mind you, we hadn’t yet celebrated the birth of the newborn king, and some
company wanted me to start thinking about our Lenten plans here at St. Mark’s. Hey, Christmas
music started playing on the radio right after Halloween, so I guess that’s the time we now live in.
Now that it’s mid-January as I write this article for our February – March newsletter, I need to
turn my attention to Lent, Holy Week and Easter. So I’m going through the materials that came in
the packet. Honestly, some of the items are good stuff. For instance, one could order a devotional
booklet, titled, “A Wondrous Love” by two renowned authors- Henri J.M. Nouwen and C.S. Lewis.
There are even devotional booklets for children and grown-ups. Lenten book marks are available.
There are so many items you can purchase to help prepare for Lent. One
year there was the pocket cross, with the words of the Lord’s Prayer written on
it. The same year had a silver looking coin, recalling Judas’ betrayal of our Lord
for 30 pieces of silver. Every year includes daily Bible readings, a way of
following the road traveled by our Lord to the cross.
I wonder from year to year how effective these materials are in helping one
journey through the “Lenten Countdown.” Say, if we purchased each item in the
packet I received last December, about 10 items for children, youth and adults,
and Kathy mailed them out to you—that would be a couple thousand items by
the way, would you have read them? Would they have helped you prepare for Lent?
The Lenten Countdown is referring to the forty days—“Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned
from the Jordan and was led by the Spirit in the wilderness for forty days, being tempted by the
devil.” (Luke 4:1-2)
What exactly is this Lenten Countdown?
Lent is a forty day countdown from Ash Wednesday to Holy Saturday, the day before Easter.
Because Sundays celebrate Jesus’ resurrection, they are not included in the forty days. In the
Bible, the number forty appears in the story of the flood, in Israel’s wandering in the wilderness and
in the life of Jesus.
After his baptism, Jesus was “in the wilderness for forty days, being tempted by the devil.”
During those forty days Jesus resisted every temptation of the devil. When those forty days and all
the days of his earthly ministry were complete, Jesus carried our sins to the cross. During the forty
days of Lent, we remember our need for a Savior, repent of our sins and receive the forgiveness

REMARKS FROM ST. MARKS
FEB/MAR 2015
Judy Love (Director of Music) and I spend a considerable amount of time planning worship
services to help all of you journey through this Lenten Countdown. From Ash Wednesday through
every Sunday in Lent, to Maundy Thursday and Tenabrae Services in Holy Week, we try and
follow the theme for the day by examining the appointed scripture.
It’s my task to write something (a sermon) that is meaningful, inspiring and insightful to you.
Hopefully, what I say is something that speaks to where you are in your Lenten Countdown and
something that might help you get through the week ahead. Judy, in collaboration with me,
chooses the hymns we sing. Hopefully, they, too, will expand on the theme from scripture and
whatever I might say in my sermon.
Judy spends an immense amount of time searching for the right prelude, offertory and postlude
pieces to play. She looks for the most appropriate anthem to be sung by our Adult Choir, and, on
occasion, our Children and Youth Choirs. The Hand Bell Choir will add to our overall worship
experience when they play. Of course, there is all the rehearsal and practice time involved—all to
help you through your Lenten Countdown.
All the time and effort by Judy and I in planning meaningful worship experiences is like the
materials I received in the mail last December. Would you take the time out of your busy schedule
to help us help you in your Lenten Countdown?
Think about it.
Pastor Chuck
SUMMER MUSIC CAMP will be
held June 22-26, from 9:00 AM to
2:00 PM. This will be our fourth
year and the staff is excited to
once again work with the youth in
“making a joyful noise unto the
Lord.” Many of the same things will be offered
as in previous years as musical skills are enhanced, as well as an appreciation for music.
Parents, youth, mark your calendars now!
New members:
John and Diane Csekitz and their children Erin
and Zachary. They live in East Greenville and
joined the church on December 21st. John is a
automation engineer and Diane has a background in chemistry and loves skiing. Erin is
participating in our confirmation program and
Zachary attends Sunday School. Welcome to
St. Mark’s!
Vox Celestium Concert
On April 26 there will be a concert presented by Vox Celestium
Chorus and Orchestra at St.
Mark's at 7 PM. The music by
Dan Tuck is all new and based on Mystical Poetry of Hildegard Von Bingen [1098-1179],
Meister Eckhart [1260-1328], and Julian of Norwich [1342-1416]. These people were very respected during their time in the church community and their poetry is still poignant today and
lend themselves easily to musical interpretation.
Dan is assisted by Judith Love in producing the
endeavor. The concert is made possible by donations from friends and by a free will offering at
the event. Refreshments will be served afterwards.
