WHAT IT IS
Experience Perhentian
– learning , conservation,
service learning &
community projects.
START YOUR EXPERIENCE BY LEARNING ABOUT the island
creatures and ecosystems. Knowledge is best gained when you
experience it personally. By day, play your part in collecting data for
a global coral watch database run by the University of Queensland.
At night, guard the beach to reduce negative impacts on nesting
sea turtles. This experience can only inspire students to do more.
Then venture into the village and share newly-gained knowledge by
interacting with the children in the Perhentian village. Students
could get involved in designing creative lesson plans and assisting
in environmental clubs or even something as diverse as organising a
flash mob. Novel ideas always spread messages further and we
welcome YOU to create your own ways of educating the children.
The village people lead various regular projects which students can
get involved in. Come and join the ‘Ecoteer Village People’ on your
next Discovery Week and be part of something that is taking small
but tangible steps towards helping the marine life and the
communities of the Perhentian Islands.

CORAL SURVEY & TURTLE PATROL You can tell the health of the
corals by looking at their colour and brightness. Students will assess
various random corals for type, colour and brightness and collate this
data to be submitted to the global Coral Watch database. On the
Perhentian Islands, nesting turtles are often disturbed by curious
tourists and poachers. Students will patrol the beach throughout the
night and inform any interested tourists about ethical turtle watching
thus eliminating any negative impact.

SERVICE LEARNING THROUGH SCHOOL CLUBS 3 weekly school
clubs are run by the Fuze-Ecoteer staff and volunteers namely the
‘Ecoteer Village People’. The Creative English Club is helping the
island children attain English comprehension levels similar to their
peers on the mainland. The Eco Snorkel Club is held for the local boys
to teach them responsible snorkelling in order to become better
snorkel guides and boatmen in the future. The Environment Club aims
at developing their environmental awareness through interactive
activities and environmental art.
COMMUNITY PROJECTS Various projects have been initiated in the
village by Fuze-Ecoteer. A beautification project has been started
whereby public places and the school are being repaired and
brightened up. A composting programme has started using the
Biomate Composting Machine. Ecoteer also initiated the Perhentian
Island Ladies Association where your students can learn how to make
local snacks whilst benefitting the ladies group.
