THIRTIETH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME | OCTOBER 27, 2013
GOD’S LOGIC IS NOT OURS
Nobody will ever mistake the Bible for a logic textbook. We need to remember this when we approach
today’s readings. How can a God who knows no favorites have a chosen people, or give us the disciplines of
fasting and almsgiving and then instruct us not to talk about them? God, in love and tenderness, knows how
quickly we can get “into a rut.” The Spirit inspires passages like the instruction from Sirach and the parable in
Luke to help drag us out of the rut of thinking that God’s ways are our ways.
Sirach poetically uses contrast to answer the question, “Whose prayer will reach the lofty clouds of
heaven?” The answer? Those who are lowly on earth. Jesus amplifies this in his parable of the Pharisee and
the publican. It is Spirit-inspired illogic that communicates today’s message: God hears the voices of those
who are ignored by the rest of the world.

Litany of the Saints
Paul Turner
In the litany of the saints the Catholic Church calls
upon dozens of saints by name to join in a solemn petition
to God. The litany is used on occasions of special importance, such as the baptism of adults; the dedication of a
church; the ordination of a deacon, priest or bishop; and
the prayers for the dying. The litany is always prayed at
the Easter Vigil, even if there are no baptisms. An abbreviated litany precedes the baptism of infants.
The litany took shape throughout the Middle Ages.
It probably began as a processional song in which the
people repeated a simple refrain to a series of invocations
intoned by cantors. The litany was standardized in 1570
and underwent a few minor revisions after the Second
Vatican Council. It is usually sung in the traditional way
– one or two cantors alternating with everyone else.
The litany begins by calling on Christ to have mercy.
Then the saints are asked to pray on behalf of the church
on earth. The saints are arranged in chronological groups.
First, the saints who appear in the bible are named (for
example, Mary, the angels, and some apostles), and then
some early martyrs, including Ignatius of Antioch, Lawrence the deacon, and Agnes. Then appear the great doctors of the church, such as Gregory and Augustine. Those
associated with monasticism or the founding of religious
orders come next – saints such as Martin, Benedict and
Francis. The list concludes with more recent saints, such
as Catherine of Siena and Teresa of Lisieux.
The litany then asks God to save people from various
evils by the life of Christ. It concludes with intentions
relating to the event at hand.

Year of Faith: October 2013
To Know and Understand, to See and Act
Meditation
“Confessing with the lips” (Romans 10:9) implies
that personal faith must express itself in public
witness. A Christian may never think of belief as a
private act. Faith is choosing to “stand with the
Lord,” and this demands that we accept the social
responsibilities that flow from what we believe
(see Benedict XVI, Door of Faith, 10).
October opens with “Respect Life Sunday,” and, in this
Year of Faith, Jesus’ disciples pray in our name: “Increase our
faith.” How comforting is Jesus’ response. Faith cannot be
measured by quantity but by quality—faith’s willingness to
trust, risk, dare—and when we see a need, to act on it. Jesus
saw ten lepers and healed them; the Samaritan saw that he was
healed and gave thanks, faith transforming his healing into
salvation.
If God sometimes seems slow to act, like the judge in
Jesus’ story, could God be inviting us, who experience Jesus’
self-sacrificing love in the Eucharist, to make God’s work of
love and justice our own? October’s final Sunday prepares us
for the Year of Faith’s final month with Jesus’ parable of the
Pharisee and tax-collector. Though everyone presumed the
Pharisee to be faith personified, he was not praying to God at
all, just talking to himself. He replaced the praise of God with
a litany of self-congratulation, and intercession with judging his
neighbor. As the Year of Faith draws to a close, Jesus asks each
of us, which of these two are you?
Mission
Translate my personal faith into public witness;
seek opportunities to act on my faith; refrain from
judging others, praying instead,
“O God, be merciful to me, a sinner.”

After nearly 30 years of faithful service, this
instrument is in need of several upgrades to
bring it into the 21st century for future

Improvements are needed to prevent potential
problems due to 1980’s computer and
electronics technology, as well as
consolidating the two consoles for one
“master” console.
The cost to bring this magnificent instrument
up to date for future parishioners and
audiences alike is $225,000.

of November. The liturgical readings of
this final month in the Church year are
keyed to the end of time and the fulfillment of Jesus’ saving acts. Nowhere is
this more fully celebrated than in Mexico,
where November 2 is the “Day of the
Dead.” Missionaries moved an ancient
Aztec festival from midsummer to
November, linking the festival to Christian themes. Today, it is
a time for remembering the dead and celebrating the continuity
of life, principally by festive picnics in cemeteries. There are
special foods and games, and people socialize with other
families and tell favorite stories about their dear ones. The
sweetness of life is honored by sugary desserts and treats.
Flowers, music, lights, and feasting assure that the day is not at
all morbid. Traditionally, the day begins with Mass, a
procession to the cemetery, and a morning feast. Most families
have a special dinner with the pan de muerto, or “bread of the
dead.” A toy skeleton is baked into the loaf, and the one who
bites into it is considered lucky indeed. The dead are not
feared, but deeply loved, and this joyful family feast points
both to age-old customs and Resurrection faith.
