Selectmen Focus on
Four Corners Development
Our Chamber considers the development
of the Four Corners vital to the economic
growth of Brookfield so we asked each
selectman what they feel are the most
important issues in moving forward.
The number one issue, they all agreed, is
to produce a template or consensus, which
would act as a guide for a developer, that
meets the expectations of the residents.
“Working with a consultant to draw up a
plan that embodies all of this – a vital residential and commercial economic area with
the right design and feel, pedestrian
friendly with shops and restaurants that is a
magnet for people to go – is the first step.”
said Bill Davidson. “ Getting the embryo
development going and “finding a White
Knight” initial investor plus an Anchor Tennant would start the momentum building,”
added George Walker.
“The second step is to go out and actively
market this vision to developers. We need
to identify what impediments there might
be in the new plan. For example, more
fancy restaurants and pastry shops might
be needed so that people choose the
Town Center as a destination.” The First
Selectman emphasized the recent zoning
change to the Town Center district making
it more economically feasible for a developer. An Economic Development Corporation that could act as a funding mechanism
for a developer, if necessary, has been
discussed, which has the added bonus of
making sure that the vision is being met.
Identifying the Four Corners on the Super
Seven Highway with appropriate signage –
gas, restaurants hotels - is a priority for
George Walker. “The merchants requested
it from the state but it turns out that all

Presidents Corner
Dear Chamber Members,
As 2011 comes to a close, I would
like to take a few minutes to thank all
of our members for a wonderful year.
Along the way, we have formed
many strong relationships and we
are proud to share all of our business partners with all of our members and our members to be. I know
many of you have taken advantage
of our networking events throughout
the year, but for those of you have
not been able to attend some of the
many exciting events, I personally
invite you to join us.
I am excited to be associated with
such a group of thoughtful and motivated people. Chamber Members
continuously stepped up to the plate
by serving on Chamber Committees,
facilitating Seminars, Lunch &
Learns, and many other projects, all
which contributed to making the
Brookfield Business Community and
the Brookfield Chamber the success
it is today.
As we look forward to 2012, take
time to review each of your own successes and challenges for 2011 and
learn from them. A few things each of
you may want to review are: get you
financial books in order; examine
your financial documents; reconcile
your cash flow statement; update
your business plan; review your
contact information both written and
electronic; review your website;
complete your annual tax filing;
re-evaluate your goals from 2011
and set your goals for 2012.
The Chamber Nominating Committee will be working on interviewing
potential new Board Members and
new Officers of the Board during the
next month. In addition, each year
the Chamber Board looks back at its
goals and challenges as well, and
goes through a formal strategic planning session, reviewing their strength
and weaknesses and what the focus
will be for 2012.
If any of
you need
help with
your own
annual
“housekeeping”
please
refer to
our new
Chamber
Directory which was just released at
the Best of Brookfield.
In closing, as always, the Board and
I would like to have your input about
our Chamber. Please email you

Remember, this is your Chamber.
I wish you every success,

Editor’s Notes
The Fall edition of the
Inner Chamber was
received with great
accolades as it was
sent to all business
owners in Brookfield as
well as to the Chamber
Members. Hopefully we
will duplicate this circulation at least once a year.
Many new applications
for membership into the
Chamber were received
as a result of this effort.
This was a huge undertaking and a special
thank you goes out to
Joe Rocky of McCaffrey
Realty for reformatting
a monumental mailing
list, to Tom Joseph of
Integrity Printing for
coordinating this effort
and to our Graphic
Designer, Robin Dann
of Studio-g for the
layout of the oversized
edition.
This month our focus is
on the development of
the Four Corners in
Brookfield. Most of the
featured businesses are
located in that area of
town. The Chamber
hopes that this project
stays a priority of the
elected officials of the
Town of Brookfield as it
will enhance the character of our community as
well as add to a robust
business tax base for
town projects.

Hon. Jodi Rell Visits
the Brookfield Chamber
The former Governor of Connecticut, Hon. M.
Jodi Rell visited a joint session of the Brookfield, Bethel and Newtown Chambers at a
recent luncheon held at the Fox Hill Inn in
Brookfield. The large and appreciative group
was treated to antidotes of how Ms. Rell first
learned about her appointment from Lt.
Governor to Governor and how it affected her
family. A resident of Brookfield for many years,
Ms. Rell is now enjoying her role as parent
and grandparent. Answering questions from
those present, she noted that only accepting
invitations for those events that she really
wanted to do and prioritizing helped her
balance her life while in office.

Brookfield Craft
Center’s 36th
Annual Holiday
Sale Opens
November 5th
The Gallery set up for the Annual Holiday Sale.
Since its reopening in October 2010,
Brookfield Craft Center has made
great strides toward reclaiming its
position as a nationally recognized
school for fine craft. Even with a
well-deserved national reputation,
the foundation of the Craft Center
has always been the local community. The organization has been a
fixture in Brookfield for 57 years,
supporting the creative aspirations of
residents as well as attracting out-oftown visitors who regularly take advantage of the unique classes that
are offered year round. Students
of all skill levels have explored
workshops in both contemporary
and traditional blacksmithing,
bladesmithing, ceramics, fused
glass, lampworking, jewelry-making,
woodturning, weaving and fiber
arts. Other areas of special interest
offered by the Craft Center have
included professional development,
design, decorative arts, drawing
and painting.
As a not-for-profit school, the
Craft Center relies on fundraising
to support its education programs
and also provide income for teaching
and exhibiting artists. This year
marks the Craft Center's 36th Annual
Holiday Sale, the organization's
primary fundraiser, which features
the work of 140 talented artists,
48 of whom are new to the Craft
Center. There are literally thousands
of pieces of affordable fine craft, all
juried and handmade in America.
Typically, the sale draws customers
from throughout the Northeast.
The work is in a variety of media...
from glass to steel, paper to pottery
and wood to woven fiber. There are
spectacular seasonal ornaments,

jewelry, functional and fine art, and

The Holiday Sale runs from
November 5th through
December 24th.
Holiday Sale Hours:
Tuesday - Friday 11 - 6,

Archer Engineering Company
The Archer Engineering Company,
located in Brookfield, is a full service
structural engineering firm celebrating
its 20th year. Kevin Archer, P.E. started
the firm in 1991 after gaining experience working for firms in Washington,
DC and New Canaan, CT. The dedicated and professional staff at Archer
Engineering specializes in providing
structural engineering for residential,
commercial, industrial and institutional
projects. Their clients include architects, builders, developers and individual home owners.
“We approach each project at
Archer Engineering in the same
manner – we are solving structural
problems in cost effective, buildable
ways. We break the structure down
to something that is simple and
buildable, and this usually results
in efficient and cost effective
construction.”
Kevin became interested in engineering
while studying architecture in college.
He was intrigued by the entry level
structural courses that were offered to
architects so he added civil engineering
as a double major. After graduating with
degrees in both architecture and civil
engineering, he focused solely
on structural engineering in graduate
school. “I have found that my architectural background provides me with a
better understanding of the needs and
design goals of my clients.”
Archer Engineering has worked on a
wide variety of residential projects that
have ranged from small remodels and
additions to new construction of high
end estates. Although their work is
mainly concentrated in Connecticut and
New York, they have designed projects
in other Northeast locations such as the
coast of Rhode Island, the Massachusetts hills, the Adirondack lakes, and
the Pocono Mountains. Some homes
Kevin Acher, President of Archer Engineering
have included such lavish amenities as;
indoor tennis courts, basketball courts,
pools, theatres complete with stage,
curtains and light rigging, even a basement level hockey rink! No matter the
size or complexity of the project, Archer
Engineering strives to accomplish the
vision of the architect and the dreams
of the home owner while making the
structure disappear behind the
sheetrock and plaster.
Many commercial, institutional, and
industrial projects have also been
designed by Archer Engineering. A few
recent projects have included: a new
church complex with offices, classrooms and a day care center, the
conversion of a residential building to
a “Science House” with classrooms and
laboratories at a private school, a new
timber framed manufacturing building,
and the repair of a subgrade parking
structure below a 7 story hotel.
“We approach each project at Archer
Engineering in the same manner – we
are solving structural problems in cost
effective, buildable ways. We break the
structure down to something that is
simple and buildable, and this usually
results in efficient and cost effective
construction.”
Archer Engineering also provides
inspections and reports, investigations,
and expert witness testimony. “In
addition to solving the problem at
hand, this gives us the opportunity to
see how other design professionals
and builders approach problems and
allows us to learn and improve upon
our work.”The Archer Engineering
Company is located just off Federal
Road near “the Four Corners” at 40
Laurel Hill Road. Feel free to contact
Kevin Archer directly to discuss your
potential project or questions at (203)

The lease rates and sale prices have come down and

Costco is moving forward with a 15,000 square foot
addition and adding a gas station to their site on
Federal Road. The BJs project at southern Route
7 should begin next spring. In January a 65,000
square foot indoor Go Cart facility will be opening at
Silvermine Road. Harbor Freight Tools has opened a
+/- 14,000 sq. ft. store at Federal Road. The addition
of new water and sewer lines coming down Route 7
will also encourage future development along Route 7.
The town of Brookfield also continues to explore
options to redevelop the “Four Corners” into a true

All in all, not bad activity for the area as compared to

The sixth annual Best of Brookfield
Trade Show boasted a new venue.
The Candlewood Inn was chosen
this year as the host so that all
exhibits could be on one floor
and parking could be improved.
Forty three vendors were on
hand to greet the public and other
Chamber Members. The purpose
of this event is to highlight local
businesses and nonprofit groups
who are members of the Brookfield
Chamber of Commerce. The
Brookfield schools were also
highlighted as the robotics team
gave demonstrations and the
students from DECA (The
Marketing Club also from
Brookfield High School)
assisted throughout the day.

From banks to jewelry the diversity
of the exhibitors was interesting.
Guest enjoyed plentiful refreshments from the terrace overlooking
Candlewood Lake.
The committee headed by
Linda Wagner (Savings Bank of
Danbury) and Sandy Cerveira
(Newtown Savings Bank) did a
wonderful job. Platinum Sponsors
for this year’s event included
Manoni Chiropractic, Webster
Bank, Newtown Savings and
Savings Bank of Danbury.

Four Corners...continued
expenses would be the responsibility of the merchants.”
explained Walker.
“Why is it that the State can find funds to “save the
turtles” but not a dime to help our merchants?” He
vows to work with the State and the merchants to
achieve the signage.
When asked what their main goal is during the next
two years the replies were diverse. The First Selectman
means to continue meeting community needs by taking
care of what Brookfield already has, - roads, the Town
Beach and Cadigan Park. “We need a Plan for the future
that is economically viable, which while respecting the
tax dollar, tackles the funding for the future,” he said.
George Walker is a believer in zero based budgeting
and expects to hold the line on spending and taxes. “My
intent is to review every line item and squeeze the most
we can from the budget,” he said. “I will not support
niceties which are not required.”
Making sure that government is in line with what the
people of Brookfield want is the top priority for Howard
Lasser. “We need a sustainable business model to get
our hands around the funding needed to consistently
sustain our assets; a plan that is not subject to the
vagaries of the political process and takes everything
into consideration.” he said.
