Dear Mazenod Community,
Even though there are many aspects of College Life that are winding up
for 2014, this week still managed to be full of wonderful and enriching
community events for everyone.
Shared Stories Anthology
Under the coordination of Ms Sarah Blaschak and Ms Esther Herdina over
40 of our boys have been involved in contributing short stories and art for
a wonderful publication. This is Mazenod’s third year of involvement and
I was incredibly proud of each of the boys involved. Their stories and art
were wonderful reminders of the great creativity and imagination that exists
with young people and it was a joy to see that displayed. Well done to all
involved.
Monash Community Games
On Wednesday we held the Inaugural Monash Community Games here at
the College for students with disabilities from Glenallan School and Monash
Special Development School. Our Year 10s hosted this wonderful occasion
of teamwork, involvement, participation and community spirit. Under the
guidance of Mr Daniel Kelly and Mr Nicholas Lew Ton, our Year 10 boys have
formed strong relationships with the young students through weekly visits
over the course of the year. Mrs Catherine Andrews (wife of Daniel Andrews,
our local Labor member) was there to help launch the day and demonstrate
Daniel’s support for the event as he had other election commitments.
The Monash Community Games was a wonderful partnership between the
College and Monash City, and was able to provide a wonderfully enriching
experience for all involved.
It was impossible not to be
affected by the genuine
love and goodness that
was evident throughout
the day and I thank
most sincerely everyone
involved,
especially
our wonderful Year 10
Students on their hard
work and support on
the day. The smiles
on
everyone’s
faces
demonstrated very clearly
to us just what a wonderful day it was.
State Government Grant for our Solar Energy Project
On Thursday we were very happy to welcome our State Environment and
Youth Affairs Minister, Mr Ryan Smith, alongside Liberal Candidate for
Mulgrave, Mr Robert Davies, to present to us a $50,000 grant to the College.
This grant is part of the State Government’s environmental support and after
a detailed submission from the College, we were fortunate enough to be
eligible for the support. Our solar project is the largest school solar installation
in Australia and demonstrates a real commitment to the environment,
sustainability, lower
electricity prices and
education priorities.
We sincerely hope
that the College
Community considers
the
values
of
renewable energies
and seeks to see
if there are ways
of both reducing
use and sourcing
energy
efficiently.
Mr Peter Le Grand,
the Chairman of our Board, shared with the boys the tremendous value
of this project and hopes that the benefits will reach wide and far in our
community. Work continues on the project in preparation for 2015.

Roadwhyz
Thursday also saw an incursion for all Year 10s hosted by the Roadwhyz
team focussing on preparation for important decisions when it comes to
driving. The boys were informed of the effects of drugs, alcohol and fatigue
on drivers and some of the very necessary steps in making informed and
safe choices when getting into a vehicle. Nurses, Ambulance Paramedics
and Police provided a powerful message which we genuinely hope
resonated with the boys. These lessons are an attempt by the College to
build upon the work being done in families about the need to be vigilant
and aware of the danger signs of behaviour. Without the backup of the
home, these sessions end up being of minimal value. Please continue to
discuss positively, honestly and openly with your sons on these issues of
great significance.
ACC Launch
Thursday was indeed a busy day with the 2nd Annual ACC (Association of
Catholic Colleges) Leader’s Mass and Dinner held at St Bernard’s College
Essendon. Our involvement in the ACC began in 1999 and we have treasured
greatly the opportunity to be involved in the highest level of pure competition
in the State. With no external scholarships from any member of the College,
we are able to maintain an integrity of competition that is unrivalled in boys’
school competitions in our state. At the Mass and Dinner, the overriding
theme was one of celebrating the tremendous strengths of each College
that go together to form a great Association. Each College Captain spoke
of their uniqueness, what they wanted to be known for in the ACC as well
as a strength that they bring to the Association. It was truly a wonderful
event and Michael Lea, our 2015 College Captain, spoke passionately about
the College and our competitive and fair spirit with maximum participation.
He spoke about the values of our community and these were appreciated
alongside the contributions of every member school. Thanks to Mr Paddy
McKenna and Mrs Rosie Welsford who coordinated a truly great event and
to Mr Tony Paatsch for hosting at St Bernard’s.
Asian Cup
Please continue to make every effort to support our hosting of Jordan from
22nd December - 7th January. This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and
we remain the only school in Australia to be given that honour. It is vitally
imperative that we have a strong presence on 23rd December at 3:30 pm
for our Welcome to Australia Ceremony, 27th January at 10:30 am for our
Junior Football Clinic and 3rd January at 6:00 pm for our Mazenod United
Team experience. Volunteers are needed every day so please contact Ms
Keely Barrow at [email protected] if you are interested in
helping in any capacity. This will also be the last opportunity to register
interest for the Jordan v Palestine match on 16th January. We are trying
to secure complimentary tickets for every student interested in attending.
Please email any interest to [email protected].
Phillip Hughes – Rest in Peace
We offer a message of prayers and support for Phillip’s family, friends and
supporters after his very sad and tragic death as a result of an accident
in Cricket. In many ways his death has genuinely affected our country and
during this month of November when we pray for all deceased people, we
offer a special prayer for Phillip that he rest in peace with the God who
loved him from the moment of his existence. We pray that his family and
friends receive the full embrace of love and support during this difficult
time. We also offer a prayer for Sean Abbott, the bowler involved in the
accident and hope that he receives the necessary support and care at this
time. Our own Mazenod Old Collegians Cricket Club will join with cricketers
all over the world to mark this week’s matches with silence, reflection and
prayer.
Fathers’ Association Christmas and Welcome BBQ
Tonight sees a wonderful celebration at the College where dads will gather
with their sons for a Christmas and Welcome BBQ. We hope that it is a great
evening of celebration.
Take Care and God Bless,
Fr Michael Twigg OMI

CHANGE OF PREFERENCE INFO SESSIONS
If students are still exploring their options for 2015, or need advice on course
preferences or pathways to university, they should come along to one of our
Change of Preference information sessions.
Our academic staff and current students will be available to answer their
questions and help them make a decision that is right for them.

Fitzroy VIC 3065
Ballarat Campus
Wednesday 17 December 6 – 7:30pm
1200 Mair Street, Connors Hall
Ballarat VIC 3350
Why would students want to change their preference?
• Changed their mind: Students may have decided on a new
specialisation, a new university, or a new career path. Whatever the
student’s motivation, it is important to make sure they take the time to
explore their options and check entry cut-offs and closing dates for the
courses they are listing.
• Didn’t do as well as expected: Some students may miss out on their
preferred courses, but there are other options. At our Change of
Preference information sessions, students will be able to discuss these
options.
• Did better than expected: Some students will do much better than they
expected, and will have left their preferred course off the top of their
list because they didn’t think they would make the cut-off. Change of
Preference is a great time for students to get further information on
these courses and add them in.

2014 CANBERRA TOUR
Year 10 Volleyball Premiers
This week has seen the culmination of our ACC Fixtures for 2014. On
Tuesday all our Year 9 and 10 Volleyball teams competed in Grand Finals
at Dandenong Stadium. We have certainly seen a big improvement in the
quality of Volleyball played by the other Colleges and we do not go into any
game expecting to win. Our Year 10 A Team worked very hard to become
Premiers against a gallant St Bernard’s. The B’s were beaten by a very good
Whitefriars team in a 4 set game. The Year 9 Teams both had outstanding
matches and came away with the Division A and B Premierships. St Bede’s
and St Bernard’s were both respected opponents and made sure we earned
every point. Congratulations to all teams and their coaches, Mr Phibbs and
Mr Cowan (Year 10) and Mr May and Mr Cincotta (Year 9). I would also
like to thank Old Boys Patrick Tang, Joshua Trounce and Ryley Wood who
also assisted the Junior Volleyball teams and Anthony Howes and Liam
Riley who assisted with our Cricket squads in mentoring and coaching. Staff
really value the input of these Old Boys who bring a vast range of skills and
experience to the roles. We would also acknowledge the efforts of Mr Riley,
Mr Becker, Mr Phibbs, Mr Bertino, Mr Pearson, Mr Griffin, Mr Clement, Mr
Mann, Mr Kelly and Mr Schumann who all helped coach sides throughout
Term 4.
Upon taking the reins as Rector of
the College Fr Michael instituted an
annual tour to Canberra. He felt that
every student should visit the nation’s
Capital and realised that this would
be beyond some families in our
community. The trip has become a
wonderful complement to our Civics
course in Year 9. Each year since 2011,
a group has travelled to Canberra
during Outdoor Education week in
November. The trip is substantially
subsidised by the College.
This year’s tour was led by Mr Tony
Coghlan, accompanied by Mrs
O’Shannassy, Mr Lambert, Mr Knott,
a nurse - Mrs Riley (mum of Tom in
Year 10) and Fr John David OMI.
Sixty eight students made the trip
and had a wonderful time touring
the sights including the Australian Parliament, the War Memorial, the
Museum of Australian
Democracy, the Australian
Electoral Commission, the
various Embassies and
the Australian Institute of
Sport.
Mazenod
recognises
the assistance of the
Australian
Government
through its Parliament and
Civics Education Rebate
(PACER) scheme which
provides a subsidy of $30
per student to enable
tours such as ours. The
Government is eager to promote Civics and Citizenship education and the
PACER scheme seeks to do this in a most practical way. These funds will be
paid directly to the College to assist in meeting the cost of the tour.
The College would also like to thank Australiner for their care of our group
and their assistance with the planning and co-ordination of the whole trip.
IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR PARENTS
Last Thursday our Junior Teams had a great day at Dandenong winning the
Year 7 Div 1 A and Year 7 Div 1 B, Year 7 Div 2 A and Year 7 Div 2 B. Our Year
8 Div 1 A Team played in the closest match of the day defeating St Bede’s in
a 5 set thriller. Our Year 8 Div 2 A Team and Div 2 B Team also had victories.
It was one of our better days at Dandenong and it was pleasing to see not
only the boys win but also show great respect to their opponents. Our Year
7 A and B Cricket teams were sensational in making the Grand Finals in
both Divisions. The A Team had a
thrilling match losing on the second
last ball of the day and the B Team
were beaten comfortably chasing
quick runs. Congratulations to all our
students.
2015 SENIOR ACC SPORT ROUND 1
DATE
Term 1 2015 is a short term with only
9 weeks. Therefore Senior ACC Sport
for Cricket and Tennis will commence
on Tuesday, 2nd December 2014. Parade is hosting the round one fixture.
We have agreed to play the game before Christmas as the actual draw had
us playing on 28th January; however this clashes with the Year 12 Retreat.
Students in Year 10 and 11 will be asked if they can play by coaches as we
will have a number of students away on Mazenod trips overseas.
ACC SWIMMING TRAINING
ACC Swimming training is well under way and we have had record numbers
attend training for this time of year. We have seen over 15 students attend
each of the four mornings and we have all been very pleased with their
attitude and commitment. Training runs every Tuesday to Friday morning at
the Monash Aquatic Centre on Waverley Rd from 7 am to 8 am. We thank all
those parents who get up early and drop their son at training.
What impact does graffiti have on you, your family and your community?
Your child will explore these questions and others in a creative, education program themed
“Don’t trash Monash!”.
The program is designed to enhance Monash Council’s existing
Graffiti Reduction Strategy in the area of prevention, and will be
delivered by Warner Youth Education to year 8 students in
secondary schools.
Highly engaging and entertaining the program is designed to
prevent youth from undertaking a range of anti-social behaviours
with a focus on tagging, and provides them with crucial life skills.
The developed approach involves an interactive, entertaining
presentation with the aim of involving your child in thinking
about and discovering the impacts of graffiti, in particular
tagging, with a focus on the criminal aspects. (It is illegal when a
person damages or defaces private and public places without the
property owner’s permission).
The delivery combines acting, role play and facilitation to guide
and involve the students in social development topics like self
respect, positive decision making and responsible action.
HOW CAN YOU HELP?
1. Talk to your child about respecting other people’s property and the issues surrounding
property damage. The success of this type of program is enhanced when it is reinforced at home.
Discuss the Graffiti Prevention Act that covers graffiti specific offences & penalties, e.g:

Marking property without owner’s consent:
Jail term of up to 2 years and fine of up to $34,646.40.

Possessing a graffiti implement while on or near public transport property:
Carries a fine of up to $3,609 or an on the spot fine of up to $721.80.
2. Seek further information by visiting Council’s website www.monash.vic.gov.au
 For youth programs, information and support.

during training) and providing general assistance around the College. If you
are interested in volunteering any time, please send an email to volunteers@

legible to assist in their speedy return to your son.
