Man Murders Ex In Resorts World Lot
By Luis Gronda
Staff Writer
A jealous ex-boyfriend gunned
down his ex-girlfriend in the Resorts
World Casino New York City Parking
lot Tuesday morning, before law enforcement shot and killed the gunman
himself.
According to police, Dalton Branch,
was shot dead by police in East New
York, Brooklyn early early Tuesday
morning after he shot and killed his exgirlfriend, Patricia Mohammed in the
racino parking lot at about 2:20 a.m.
Deputy Inspector Jeffery Schiff, the
commanding officer of the 106th Precinct, which has the Casino in its patrol, said Mohammed was shot several
times in the head and torso.
During the incident, Branch attempted to shoot and kill a man who
was with Mohammed, identified by
police as Kenneth Hickman, but was

mad were believed to be in a relationship at the time of the shooting.
Schiff said Branch drove to the casino and tracked Mohammed down.
“He knew that they were an item
and she parks here. He knew where
and when to go and he found them,”
he said.
Police said Hickman ran from the
scene and Branch chased after him,
shooting at him while driving. Hickman used parked cars as cover to
shield himself from the bullets.
Law enforcement found Branch in
East New York less than four hours
later. Police said that Branch immediately began shooting members of
the Queens Warrant patrol who were
searching for him following the early
morning murder.
Schiff said that this was an isolated
incident and Resorts World Casino
has partnered with them on numerous
occasions whenever there is an ongoing police investigation.
“This could’ve happened anywhere
and it just happened here,” he said.
“This wasn’t a result of anything
happening in the casino. There’s no
history of these people anywhere here.
This is where they just happened to
come to.”

Opposition Grows To Proposed High School
By Jon Cronin
The Bayside community demonstrated their opposition to a proposed
multi-story high school at the former
site of the Bayside Jewish Center at
203-05 32 Ave. on Thursday morning
at a rally organized by State Sen. Tony
Avella (D-Bayside).
Speaking to the press with approximately 30 residents behind him, Avella
was outraged at how the School Construction Authority had not contacted
him or the community regarding plans
to build a multi-story high school. He
said when he contacted SCA President
and CEO Lorraine Grillo and asked
why no one was notified he claims
Grillo allegedly responded by stating
they, “didn’t want to give him time to
organize,” against the purchase.
Jason Fink, Deputy Press Secretary
for the Department of Education, responded to that claim in an email.
“As we continue our effort to reduce school overcrowding in Queens
and throughout our city, we are fully
engaging our partners to ensure ongoing dialogue on all aspects of this
project as we move forward,” he said.
“The public review has just begun and
members of the community will have
the opportunity to provide feedback.”
Fink also noted that the purchase
agreement is still being finalized.
At the rally, Avella emphasized
that he does not believe the residential
neighborhood can handle the traffic
of an 800 to 1,000 student high school
would bring to the community. He
also said that does not believe any
thought or analysis went into planning a high school at the site.
The State Senator added that he
wanted to send two messages, “One
is that the SCA “better back off. We’re
going to fight this tooth and nail. This
site is inappropriate.” The second is
that he has introduced legislation in
Albany which would force the SCA to
prove an analysis of the chosen location and provide a list of other locations they considered.
Janet McEneaney, a member of
Community Board 11, speaking at the
rally, called the site, “Inappropriate.”
She added that in the area there are two
nearby elementary schools, a Catholic
Church, and Bayside High School.
“They’re crazy,” she said for believing
a school that needs parking and busing
would work in their community. “We’re
not going to be steamrolled by the SCA.”
Community Board 11 will be holding their next monthly meeting on
June 15 at 7:30 p.m. at M.S. 158 and
this issue will be on the agenda.
Lifelong Bayside resident, John Lamangino, is concerned local crime may
rise if a new school is built. He said over
years he has noticed an increase in vandalism and car break-ins, seen students
dealing drugs in front of his house.
Paul Graziano, an urban planner,
said that the site was “too small” for
a school, “at a little over an acre”, they
would have to build an underground
garage to accommodate parking. Graziano added that the site would accommodate 16 two family homes and
suggested a senior community center.
When asked if the area was zoned
for a school, Avella said, “If they had to
go by zoning they couldn’t do it,” adding, he believes the SCA could get the
proper waivers to construct a school.
Avella said he encourages residents
to call his office to begin a mailing data-
base and urged everyone to call Councilman Paul Vallone (D-Bayside), who
Avella claimed supports the building
of a school at that location.
Vallone, who announced the plans
for the school earlier this month, has
not endorsed or supported the plan.
“The purchase of this site is just
the first step in a very long process; a
process which will involve the community, community board and our office at every step of the way,” he said in
a statement. “Any project of this size
will always have opposition but in the
end, we must weigh the merits of the
site against the overwhelming demand
for additional seats. The significant
overcrowding in our schools is an issue that has been put off for too long
and will only continue to worsen if it
is not addressed.
According to Vallone, the SCA will
begin a site selection review process
which includes an environmental impact study followed by a public comment period of 45 days.

CB 3 ‘OK’s Proposed School In Jackson Heights
By Daniel Offner
Staff Writer
To try and ease overcrowded
schools in Jackson Heights, the School
Construction Authority is proposing a
new elementary school at 69-01 34th
Ave., the former site of White Castle’s
regional headquarters.
Representatives with the SCA met
with members of Community Board 3
on May 21, to propose the acquisition
and demolition of the existing property in order to make way for a 450 seat
elementary school.
“Given the extraordinary need for
school seats in this part of Queens,
the Department of Education capital
plan identifies the need for 1,300 additional seats, of which we’re funded
for about 900,” Kenrick Ou, director
of the SCA’s real estate group, told the
members of CB 3. “The SCA evaluated
the site and we think it’s a great location that is well poised to help relieve
overcrowding at nearby schools like
PS 152 and PS 69.”
Based on demographic projections
and estimated housing growth, the
SCA projects student population in
Community Education Council District 30 will increase by 2019, with enrollment reaching between 24,427 and
25,152 primary school students in prekindergarten through fifth grade.
“This number suggests a potential

increase of up to 4,345 students from
the current enrollment of all existing Community District 30 primary
schools and would, in the future without the proposed school, be anticipated to result in a target utilization rate
between 126 percent – 130 percent of
those schools,” according to the SCA’s
proposal.
Jeff Guyton, co-president of CEC
30, previously told the Queens Tribune that with funding for 450 new
seats, the proposal is a “really good
first step” toward addressing overcrowding issues in local schools.
“Obviously this is really great news
for the district,” Guyton said. “It gets
us about a third of the way there.”
In addition to a proposed elementary school in Jackson Heights, Guyton said the district is working to find
a location for a new middle school
in Sunnyside and a suitable site for a
school in Hunters Point.
Danielle Schaaff, community relations manager for the SCA, said that

in CB 3’s subsection of District 30,
which includes Jackson Heights and
East Elmhurst, there are 912 seats that
have been funded, with another 456
seats that were identified but not included as part of the capital plan.
“This would be one of those projects
and would be opening in September of
2019 if everything goes as plan and on
schedule,” Schaaff said. “We know that
sounds like a long time, but four years
will really fly by and by then we’ll probably need two more schools.”
Although SCA representatives said
the agency has not started the design
process, parents and other community
stakeholders expressed concern with
the site’s proximity to the BrooklynQueens Expressway, as well as a lack of
parking space for teachers and administrators in the vicinity of the school.
“The SCA has very robust design
standards,” Ou added. “Every inch is
going to be used for either school yard
or instructional space.”
Following the public discussion,
members of CB 3 voted unanimously,
in an executive session decision, to approve the SCA proposal.
As part of the SCA’s public review
process, Ou said that the agency will
continue to accept public comment on
the proposal until June 6.

Queens Irish Leaders Laud Marriage Vote
By Ariel HernAndez
On May 22, Ireland became the
20th country to legalize same-sex marriage, and the first to do so by popular
vote. Sixty-two percent of Irish voting citizens approved the measure,
including a majority in almost every
Irish region.
In New York City, historically
home to a large, often conservative,
Irish-American population, the reaction from prominent Irish-Americans
was overwhelmingly positive.
On April 30, with the vote in Ireland pending and polls showing a
near-certain victory for pro-samesex marriage supporters, there was a
gathering at City Hall in support of a
“YES” vote.
In attendance was Irish-American
Councilman Daniel Dromm (D-Jackson Heights), Irish Gay activist Brendan Fay, Fay’s spouse, Nik Quaife and
Aidan Connolly of the Irish Arts Center and civil rights leader Mary Elizabeth Bartholomew.
“I am proud to stand with my colleagues to support marriage equality in
Ireland,” said Dromm, who is openly
gay. “Irish polls show great support for
the referendum and we want to continue that momentum by lending our voice
right here in New York City. Everyone
should have the right to marry the person they love. Ireland is taking a power-

Gay rights activist Brendan Fay,
founder of the St. Pat’s For All Parade
in Queens, rallied up in celebration
of the legalization of gay marriage in
Ireland.
“Exclusion is not Irish,” Fay said.
“Inequality is not Irish.”
Fay also spoke at the gathering that
was held April 30.
“I am heartened by the strong support within the New York Irish community for marriage equality,” Fay
said. “Our families and friends back
home know they have the support of
Irish America. Irish people at heart
are a fair and generous people and will

Ireland has allowed for same-sex
couples since 2010 to undergo civil
partnerships, once the law comes into
effect, every civil ‘partnership’ will be
considered marriage.
Ireland is one of the most devoutly
Catholic countries in Europe, and has
a history of social conservatism. Homosexuality was illegal in Ireland until
1993 and divorce until 1996. The latter amendment passed by less than
one half of a percent. Abortion is still
heavily restricted in the country.

Yes To A New High School
The population growth in Northeast Queens and the overcrowding of most classrooms in this area, cries out for an additional high school, as well as other facilities
in this fast growing neighborhood.
The selection by the Schools Construction Authority of a site that presently houses
the Bayside Jewish Center for a high school is a positive step. It’s sad that, within the
Reform and Conservative movements, Jewish comminutes are losing memberships
and cannot sustain their buildings. The Catholic Church is also looking to close a
number of churches in Queens.
But out of the bad news comes good news. Recently in Ozone Park, a Catholic
school which was merged with another school nearby due to low enrollment, became
the site of a new, much-needed public school.
Neighborhoods and civic groups must face up to the challenge of providing educational facilities as the population demands, and not put up fences. And the SCA
must make sure what is built on 32nd Avenue helps, not hurts, the community.
In YOur OpInIOn
No War On Renters
R
To The Editor:
e. Joseph Strasburg’s
May 14 op-ed piece:
“Mayor de Blasio’s war
on renters.” As a rent-regulated
tenant for the past 47 years, I
dispute Mr. Strasburg’s remarks
reflecting his position as president of the Rent Stabilization
Assn., a powerful landlords’
lobbying group. He defends
vacancy de-control by saying
“we need to protect tenants,
not apartments.” Wrong. We
must protect both. Deregutation of stabilized apartments
motivates ruthless landlords
like Joe & Amrom Israel to
pressure long-term tenants to
leave by gutting their apartments, so they can charge
market rate rents in a gentrified Brooklyn neighborhood.
They now face 15 years in
rent-free quarters.
But arrests & indictments
won’t solve the problem. Vacancy de-control has removed
nearly 300,000 affordable apartments from NYC’s housing
market in the last decade,
according to City Comptroller Scott Stringer. If Mayor de
Blasio wants to achieve his goal
of 200,000 affordable units, he
must end vacancy de-control.
But he can’t do this alone. It’s
up to our legislators in Albany
(a.k.a. Rikers Island North),
where many of our problems
lie.
Many state rent laws expire
in June, including vacancy
decontrol. Assembly Speaker
Carl Heastie won majority support for a bill to abolish below
market rate deregulation. But,
this bill faces an uncertain future in the GOP (“Gratify One
Percenters”) controlled Senate.
Former Majority Leader Dean
Skelos, a real estate lobby lapdog, was de-throned by corruption charges, but many Senate
Republicans owe their election
to real estate lobbyists’ cash and
want to pay off their debt.
The final result rests with
two Albany factions:
1. The Independent Democrats Conference, five Senate
Democrats, including Tony
Avella, who broke with their party to work with GOP colleagues
across the aisle. Their critics
say IDC means “I Don’t Care.”
To make them care, rent regulated tenants must bombard
them with e-mails, letters &
phone calls urging them to
end vacancy decontrol.
2. Gov. Andrew Cuomo
must support this bill & sign
it, if passed. He’s crafted strong
tenant protection measures,
but also got huge donations
from the Real Estate Board of
N.Y. Will he act as a tenants’
champion or landlords’ chew
toy? We’ll know by the end
of June.
The debate over rent law
speaks to a larger issue; our
need for more home rule. Our
destiny is determined by folks
we didn’t elect, who live closer
to Canada than Queens. Unless we gain greater control,
we should consider forming a
separate state. Seceding from
New York faces tough constitutional & political hurdles. But
NYC has enough people, power
and purse strings to become the
51st state. Let’s hope we don’t
have to make this happen.

End Critical EMS Delays
BY CouNCil MEMBErS
DoNovAN riCHArDS &
ElizABETH CrowlEY
N
ational Emergency
Medical Services Week
was held last week to
bring together local communities and highlight the service and
dedication emergency personnel demonstrate every day.
In February, the average response time to life-threatening
medical emergencies in Queens
was 10 minutes and 15 seconds,
which is unacceptable. The City
Council passed a law that would
track end-to-end response times
for both fire and medical emergencies, and further require the
FDNY to report that response
time. New Yorkers need to
know the truth. This involves
recording, not only the time it
took for an emergency unit to
be dispatched, but also the time
it took to process the call.
The law was named for Ariel
Russo, who was tragically killed
when she was struck by a reckless driver trying to evade the
police. After the crash, there
was a clear error in dispatching
an EMS unit and emergency
personnel lost at least four critical minutes. The “Ariel Russo
Emergency 9-1-1 Response
Time Reporting Act” now
provides a more transparent
record of response times.
Last year, two young siblings, Ayina and Jai’Launi
Tinglin, were killed in a Far
Rockaway fire. EMS personnel
did not reach the scene until
20 minutes after the call was
received. The City found that
personnel errors preceding the
dispatch caused delays in reaching the children, but we see this
as only half of the truth. Reports from dangerous, deadly
fires have shown that the FDNY
only dispatches ambulances
after an FDNY unit on the
scene confirms it is a structural
fire. In this case, had EMS not

needed to wait, they could have
been dispatched more than six
minutes earlier.
We believe the FDNY must
dispatch EMS units once the
report of a structural fire comes
in and make it part of the many
units dispatched within a firstalarm fire.
The FDNY again wasted critical time by waiting to dispatch
EMS during a structural fire in
Brooklyn. The fire killed seven
children in the Sassoon family:
David, Yehoshua, Moshe, Yaakov, Eliane, Rivka and Sarah. It
took nearly 14 minutes for EMS
to get to the scene.
We call on the department
to make three critical policy
changes that would reduce
response times and improve
the level of pre-hospital care.
First, the department must
change its dispatch policy and
immediately send an ambulance upon receipt of a 9-1-1
call reporting a structural fire as
part of a “first-alarm.” Second,
we need to greatly expand the
number of department ambulance tours. This is the surest
way to reduce response times,
and the additional tours managed correctly will not only save
lives but could also generate
revenue for the City. Lastly, in
order to increase department
professionalism, promotional
civil service exams must be
instituted for upper-ranking officers, just like those for the Fire
department’s firefighters and
other public safety agencies.
This would also bring the City
into compliance with federal
and state guidelines to ensure
emergency scenes are properly
and efficiently handled.
As the Russo, Tinglin and
Sassoon families continue to
grieve, these key policy changes
will be instrumental in reducing response times, achieving
better outcomes and ultimately
saving lives. Let’s make our EMS
stronger for today and always.

Big Shifts In Queens’ Jewish Demographic
By Daniel Offner
Staff Writer
Queens has seen a major shift in its
existing Jewish population in recent
years.
This change in demographics –
whether for better or for worse – has
already led some synagogues to shutter their doors, while others have
found solace in merging with other
neighboring temples.
Cynthia Zalisky, executive director of the Queens Jewish Community
Council, said that while it is unfortunate, several Conservative synagogues
have closed in the borough in recent
years.
“In certain areas, we’re losing the
Jewish population,” Zalisky said. “It’s
dwindling demographics. The populations of these temples are all elderly.”
Because of the aging population,
membership at several Conservative
temples has been in decline, according
to Zalisky. With membership fleeting,
some synagogues have been forced
to close, while others have managed
to keep things alive by merging with
other congregations nearby.
“In Bayside they just didn’t do it
fast enough or well enough,” Zalisky
said, following last week’s announcement that the Bayside Jewish Center
will be sold to the School Construction Authority, which plans to build
The Bayside Jewish Center will soon be the location of a new public high school.
a new high school. “That’s a beautiful
building, but unfortunately there are
no people to attend services.”
Similarly, the Reform Jewish population has also witnessed a steady drop
in the number of congregants over the
years.
Like the Conservative population,
the number of congregants at Reform
synagogues has also witnessed a drop
in membership over the years.
In communities such as Flushing,
where the booming Asian demographic has become most dominant, Reform
temples like the Free Synagogue of
Flushing have also seen a decline in
members from generations prior.
“Flushing is no longer a Jewish
area that it once was,” Brian Drutman,
a member of the Free Synagogue of
Flushing, said. “It certainly has affected the community to some degree.”
Drutman said that in a synagogue
that is built for a capacity of approxi-
mately 700, the congregation is currently about 100 to 150 members
strong.
Despite a steady drop in the Conservative Jewish population, Zalisky
said that the Orthodox and Bukharan
Jewish populations in the Borough are
growing.
Unlike the Conservative sect, she
said that the main issue for the Orthodox population is zoning, since Orthodox families tend to be much larger,
several have had to move because they
don’t have enough room.
According to Zalisky, the shift in
demographics throughout the Borough is just “a sign of the times.” She
said that with many conservative synagogues experiencing a decline in their
congregations, the Jewish community
must take a different approach to preserve the population in Queens.
“We have to revitalize Queens and
show the younger population it’s a
good place to live,” she said. “We want
to see Queens comfortable for all denominations… we also want it to be
pro-families.”
Zalisky said that while a predominantly large population of Jewish residents living in Jackson Heights and Bayside has shifted, the QJCC would like to
see the pendulum swinging back.

MTA Blames Wire Theft for A Train Disruption
By Luis Gronda
Staff Writer
A theft of a copper wire caused
massive delays along the A train on
Wednesday morning, according to the
MTA.
The transit agency said thieves stole
the cable along the A train tracks near
the Howard Beach-JFK stop Tuesday evening, causing extensive delays
along the line for the morning commuters on Wednesday.
“This morning’s service disruption
was directly caused by the theft of cable
from along the subway right of way.
This led to delays and crowding along
all 31 miles of the A train, and forced
thousands of Rockaways customers to
use shuttle buses to get to work,” said
Carmen Bianco, MTA New York City
Transit President. “We are working
closely with the NYPD Transit Bureau
to help them investigate this crime and
identify the culprits responsible.”
According to the MTA, the wire was
discovered missing at 11:22 p.m. Tuesday night, when a northbound A train
lost power just past the Howard Beach
station. Train crews brought in another
train and an estimated 150 customers
transferred onto that train to get it back
to the Howard Beach station just after
midnight Wednesday morning.
The MTA said at least 500 feet of
cable was taken from about 12 loca-
tions along the tracks near the
Howard Beach stop.
Service along the A train was
suspended during the morning
rush between Rockaway Boulevard and Broad Channel, and
was replaced with shuttle buses
to accommodate straphangers.
The agency said A train service
will be limited and the buses
will run to the Rockaways until
service is fully restored.
Mike O’Reilly, a lifelong
Broad Channel resident, said it
took him 43 minutes to travel
on the Cross Bay Bridge going from Rockaway to Broad
Channel as a result of the train
disruption.
He described the traffic on
the bridge as “absolute bumper
to bumper.”
O’Reilly said after drop- MTA workers respond to the service disruption along the A train line

Officials Ring In
Beach Season In Rockaway
BY LUIS GRONDA
Staff Writer
Beach season officially began
last week and with it came news of
progress.
Mayor Bill de Blasio held the annual press conference to ring in the
start of the City’s beach season last
week at Rockaway Beach. The event
was also used to announce the
opening of a portion of the boardwalk just before Memorial Day.
Officials said 2.2 miles of the
Rockaway boardwalk, from Beach
86th Street to Beach 97th Street,
will reopen to the public for this
summer season.
They also announced a $480
million grant from the Federal Emergency Management Administration toward its reconstruction. The
mayor added that any money left
over from that project would fund
other initiatives in Rockaway.
The boardwalk has been closed
since Superstorm Sandy ripped
through New York City in 2012. It
destroyed the walking surface along
Rockaway Beach, which many consider a symbol of the area.
The City has since embarked
on its rebuild, promising to bring
the boardwalk back by Memorial
Day next year with construction
to be completed by May 2017. The
new boardwalk will be rebuilt with
new steel and concrete that will be
able to withstand strong storms
like Sandy, should another natural
disaster occur in New York City.

It’s Only A Short Drive Away…
BY DOMENICK RAFTER
Editor in Chief
There is enough to do in Queens.
But if you feel you must leave the
borough for a day, there are places
you can visit without having to pay
for a hotel room or a flight.
Here are some great day trips you
can take this summer:
Long Island Game Farm
The Long Island Game Farm was
founded in 1970 by Stanley and
Diane Novak and is located on 25
acres of land off exit 70 on the Long
Island Expressway in Manorville, Suffolk County. Featuring hundreds of
animals, the Wildlife Park has grown
over the years and has served as a frequent destination for school children
that have grown up on Long Island.
Each year, thousands of guests visit
the park.
Today, the Game Farm is operated by three generations of Novak’s,
Co-Owners Diane and her daughter
Melinda, along with granddaughter
Chela.
The Long Island Game Farm is
open seven days a week. For more
information on pricing and hours,
and a list of upcoming events, visit

Sunnyside Manor - Home of
Washington Irving
It may share its name with a
Queens neighborhood, but Sunnyside Manor feels very far from Queens.
Visit the historic home of Washington
Irving, author of “The Legend of
Sleepy Hollow” on the shores of the
Hudson River. His characters, from
Brom Bones and Ichabod Crane to the
mysterious Headless Horseman and
the comic Rip Van Winkle, are icons
in American culture.
A gently curved path leads to
gorgeous views of the Hudson River
– separated from the manor grounds
by Amtrak and Metro North tracks and reveals the allure of Sunnyside’s
unique design, its intimate setting, its
bucolic grounds, and its association
with a beloved man of letters.
Your guide, dressed elegantly in
hoop skirts or formal dress of the
times, explains how Washington
Irving designed Sunnyside and its
grounds himself collaborating with
his neighbor, the artist George Harvey. Beginning in 1835, he expanded
a small cottage in stages, combining
his sentimental interests in the architecture of colonial New York and
buildings he knew in Scotland and
Spain.
The grounds reflect Washington
Irving’s romantic view of art, nature,
and history. He arranged garden
paths, trees and shrubs, vistas, and
water features to appear natural, and
planted an exotic wisteria vine (still
growing) to envelope the house.
Since Sunnyside and many of its
furnishings remained in the family, a
visit here is one of the most authentic
experiences of mid-19th century life
anywhere in the country.
Luna Park
Rich in history, Coney Island has been a
destination for New
Yorkers for more
than a century.
Just a quick drive
down the Belt Parkway from Southern
Queens, or a one-seat
subway ride from Astoria, Jackson Heights and
Forest Hills, Coney Island remains a go-to place for day trippers.
Luna Park, one of the Brooklyn
shorefront’s most illustrious places,
is back and thriving.
Having been awarded a 10-year
lease for three parcels of land in the
beach front amusement zone, CAI
built the first new amusement park
in Coney Island in more than 40 years
on six acres, opening in 2010. In the
five years since its opening, Luna Park
has continued to grow to become a
popular destination for fun seekers
in the city and beyond.
On June 10, the park will open
the Thunderbolt roller coaster, based

on the famed wooden coaster that
operated in Coney Island (though
not in the original Luna Park) from
1925 to 1982. It, like the famed parachute jump, became a popular relic of
Coney Island until it was demolished
in 2000.
Bear Mountain
Does country life and fresh mountain air tickle your fancy? Bear Mountain is just a short hour-drive out of
Queens – depending on Bronx traffic,
of course.
Start by walking along Hessian
Lake, where 39-year-old Franklin
Roosevelt camped and supposedly
caught polio in 1921, from the parking
lot until you reach the Major Welch
trailhead about a third of the way
around the lake. The trail rises steeply
on the north face of the mountains,
offering excellent views of the Hudson Highlands and the Catskills.
Keep your ears peeled for rifle fire
from nearby West Point and
watch for Metro North
or Amtrak trains on
the east bank of the
Hudson or mile-long
CSX rail trains on the
west bank. When
you reach the road,
walk along it for a
short time until you
get to the summit,
marked by the Perkins
Memorial Tower. Climb the
tower to see excellent views of
the Catskills and even the Manhattan
skyline.
The route down utilizes the famous
Appalachian Trail, which stretches
from Georgia to Maine. After crossing a fire road several times, the trail
descends into a rocky, thick forest
along a new trail constructed in the
last decade. It leads you out near the
parking lot.
For an easier climb, with a magnificent view, try Anthony’s Nose,
just across the Bear Mountain Bridge,
which spans the Hudson. (Seriously,
the bridge’s suspension cables are actually mounted into Anthony’s Nose’s
hillside). A wooded path rises quickly,
but flattens out for a leisurely walk to
the summit with stunning views.
If hiking isn’t your thing, relax by
Hessian Lake, have a picnic and take
in the fresh air.
Circle Line
Not too far out of the Borough
is New York City’s favorite boat ride.
The Circle Line has been taking visitors around - literally - the island of
Manhattan for 70 years.
Today, the cruise line, based at
Pier 83 at West 43rd Street and the
Hudson River offers a variety of different boat tours.
The Full Island Cruise is the most
popular cruise. The three-hour
ride navigates the whole island of
Manhattan, offering passengers
a chance to witness three rivers,
seven major bridges, the five boroughs and over 25 world renowned
landmarks, including a magnificent
close-up of the Statue of Liberty.
Adults pay $38, children $25 and
senior citizens $33.
The Semi-Circle Cruise is a twohour cruise around the Battery, up
the East River, and under the Brooklyn, Manhattan and Williamsburg
Bridges, to the United Nations and
back. Adults pay $34, children $23
and senior citizens $30.
The 75-minute Liberty Cruise
sails down the Hudson River to the
Statue of Liberty and back, featuring
sights like Ellis Island, the historic
immigration center and the World
Financial Center. Adults pay $28,
children $20 and senior citizens
$25.
The Harbor Lights Evening Cruise
follows the same route as the SemiCircle Cruise. Adults pay $34, children
are $23 and senior citizens $30.
The Beast offers passengers a
speedy ride aboard a custom built
70 foot off shore racing boat that
zooms up to 45 m.p.h. on its spin
to the Statue of Liberty and back.
Adults pay $26 and children $20
(Height restriction: 40”) and senior
citizens $26.
Only an hour from Queens, Bear Mountain offers great hiking.

Outdoor Exploration At Garvies Point Museum
Tucked in the west corner of Glen
Cove, the Garvies Point MuseumPreserve offers more than a dozen
programs to educate the community on local geology, archaeology
and natural history.
This summer, kids and adults can
enjoy several hands-on lessons as a
part of the Garvies Point Museum
summer programming.
The museum is located on a
geologically rich part of land, where
features typical of Long Island, such
as colorful clay cliffs, glacial deposits
and fossils, are densely collected. Inside the museum, geology exhibits
teach about the formation of Long
Island as well as Native American
history in the region.
This summer, families, camp
groups and individuals can participate in a number of educational
events. On Tuesdays, Wednesdays
and Thursdays, nature classes for 5
to 10 years old cover butterflies and
bugs, beginner bird watching, and
beach ecology.
Kids 8 to 10 years old can also
participate in the museum’s geology
program, to study erosion and fossils,
and the formation of Long Island.
Adult programming includes jewelry-making and sculpture classes.
Workshops this summer include

Is This The Year Of
QUEENS’
AMAZIN’S?
BY CARMINE CARCIERI
After a marvelous 13-3 start to
open up the new season, the New
York Mets, who notched their first
10-game win streak since 2010, have
suddenly sunk back to reality.
The Mets are 27-21 as of press
time, behind a struggling offense
that is failing to build any type of
lead for one of the strongest pitching staffs in the MLB.
Manager Terry Collins’ lineup
was ranked near the middle of the
pack, both in runs scored and batting average, during the first month
of play, but May has been no short
of a disaster.
The Mets scored only 78 runs and
the lineup has consistently failed to
hit for average, .230 in 23 games in
early May.
Yes, third baseman David Wright,
who will see a back specialist for
stenosis, and catcher Travis d’Arnaud
(finger) are rehabbing injuries and
have not played since April, but
even when they are active, the Mets
can’t rely on two players to consis-
tently carry the offense night in and
night out. The lone off-season addition, outfielder Michael Cuddyer, is
hitting just .250, right fielder Curtis
Granderson, who has been a shell
of himself since rejoining the team
last season, is hitting a measly .241
and centerfielder Juan Lagares has
only one home run. First baseman
Lucas Duda, who continues to hit
with his usual power, has been the
lone bright spot.
Then there’s the shortstop position. GM Sandy Alderson may need
to explore everyday shortstop options on the trade market because
Wilmer Flores hasn’t found his footing defensively. Even though Flores
has been average offensively, his
plate presence doesn’t outweigh his
defensive liabilities, as he has nine
errors (second worst in the NL).
On the flip-side, the Mets pitching
has been phenomenal as they are
fourth in the MLB with a 3.33 ERA and
ninth in the league in strikeouts.
Matt Harvey, who is currently
dealing with a “dead arm,” has
bounced back nicely from Tommy
With more than four months left in the season, can the Mets improve
their 27-21 record?
John surgery. Last season’s NL
Rookie of the Year, Jacob deGrom,
continues to mow down hitters
while 42-year old Bartolo Colon is
reliable every fifth day. Even Noah
Syndergaard, one of the Mets’ top
prospects with no major league
experience, has given the team
three strong outings with Dillon Gee
nursing a groin injury.
The season is still young but it’s
already looking like the Washington
Nationals are on their way to running away with the NL East thanks to
a deep pitching staff and the power
of Bryce Harper. That will leave the
Mets, who are expecting to reach
the postseason, in line for one of the
two wild card slots.
But that does not mean the team
is doomed.
As we have seen in past postseasons, teams with strong arms
have found ways to succeed [San
Francisco Giants and Kansas City
Royals] no matter what seed they
landed.
If the rotation is able to avoid
injuries and the offense provides run
support, the Mets will be a dangerous team in the NL, but if the tides
turn in the next few months, Queens
could be in line for their ninth straight
season of no baseball in October.
Bombers Struggle Too This Year
BY FRANCO FINO
Having endured a difficult set
of road games, in which the New
York Yankees lost seven of their
nine games against the Tampa
Bay Rays, the Kansas City Royals
and the Washington Nationals,
many fans may be questioning
whether or not the Yankees’ early
season success will reflect the rest
of their season.
The Yankees are 25-22, as of
press time. However, many of the
teams the Yanks played included
struggling American League East
franchises such as the Toronto
Blue Jays, the Baltimore Orioles,
and the Boston Red Sox. It is
noteworthy to mention two of the
teams they have recently played –
the Royals and the Nationals – are
in first place in their respective
divisions and have really given the
Yankees a tough time.
On Tuesday, May 19, Andrew
Miller of the Yankees conceded a
two-run homer to Ryan Zimmer-
man of the Nationals in the bottom
of the tenth inning for an 8-6 walkoff lose, which was followed by a 3-2
defeat the following day.
In the following series, the Texas
Rangers swept the Yankees in a
3-game series that included two
high scoring games, one of which
was a blowout win of 15-4 on May
23. C.C. Sabathia, who has struggled
the entire season, conceded ten
runs in the third inning of the Yankees’ 15-4 defeat. It is important to
mention that Sabathia, a pitcher
once revered around Major League
Baseball, is 2-6 this season with a
combined ERA of 5.47
Along with their recent setbacks
against some of their league rivals,
the Yankees have had many offensive struggles. Players such as Stephen Drew (.176 BA), Carlos Beltran
(.234 BA), and Didi Gregorius (.222
BA), have all not played up to the
expectations of the fans.
Beltran, 38, who has hit over
20 homeruns in 11 of his 17 professional seasons, is set to make
$15,000,000 this season. It
is undeniable that the aging Beltran, who currently
has three homeruns, is
not comparable to his
younger self, or other
players such as Alex Rodriguez who has posted
10 homeruns and Mark
Teixeira who has hit 13
homeruns.
Gregorius, 25, who
has played only three
full seasons with the
Cincinnati Reds and
the Arizona Diamondbacks, has not filled
the shoes of legendary Yankees
captain Derek Jeter who had just
retired at the end of last season. Obviously no one expected the young
shortstop to be as good as Jeter,
as the Yankees are going through
an experimental season in terms
of players. However, Gregorius has
not only struggled offensively with a
.222 batting average, he has posted
five errors, four short of Chase Head-
ley who leads the team with nine
errors. Gregorius was picked up by
the Yankees in an effort to improve
the defense, as GM Brian Cashman
made the move in response to
scouting reports such as Baseball
America’s report that “[Gregorius]
has smooth actions, plus range,
and a sniper rifle of an arm.”

City’s Two
Soccer Teams
Kick Up
Excitement
BY LUIS GRONDA
Staff Writer
New York City now has two Major
League Soccer teams, which the
league hopes will develop into a
local rivarly much like the popular
derbies in Europe including Manchester United-Manchester City in
England and Real Madrid-Atletico
Madrid in Spain.
New York City FC joined the
league as an expansion franchise
this season, along with Orlando City
SC, to become the 19th and 20th
teams in the league.
The team currently plays its home
games at Yankee Stadium, while it
looks for a site to build a permanent
home. Queens has been a rumored
site in the past, with Aqueduct Racetrack and Flushing Meadows Corona
Park both seen as options for the
team to build its stadium. Those talks
have seemingly died down in recent
months, with the new rumor being
building a stadium near Columbia
University in Manhattan.
A recent New York Times article
reported that it may look to turn the
college’s football stadium into a facility that can also host soccer games.
The stadium would still be home to

“It was odd. It was definitely odd
to be on the other side of the bench,
the other side of the field. It was odd
to look out at all those players and
see that they were opponents and
not my players. But that was really
about it. Obviously I think a terrific
crowd again, great atmosphere for a
game. I tried to enjoy it as much as I
could and certainly that’s not going
to be much when you lose 2-0,” Kreis
said after the game.

to a solid start so far this year, with
a 4-2-5 record as of press time. That
is good enough for third place in

behind leaders D.C. United.
The team has had mixed results
as of late, with a 1-2-3 record in its
last six games. Its most recent match

Experience The Art Of Film
And Sculpture At Socrates
BY TESS MCRAE
Editor
The summer is a great time for
art-lovers. School is out and many
art venues roll out new exhibits for
the warmer weather. But sometimes,
sitting inside a museum, can be a
waste of a beautiful day.
Fortunately, sunbathing art aficionados can get the best of both
worlds at Socrates Sculpture Park
on Vernon Boulevard in Long Island
City. The waterside green space just
rolled out five new pieces which will
be on display through Aug. 30.
“The Living Pyramid,” the latest
piece by New York City-based artist Agnes Denes, is a site-specific
earthwork that spans 30 feet at its
four-sided base and ascends 30 feet
high. It was created from several tons
of soil and planted grass.
“Very few artists can fulfill the
moniker of ‘visionary’ and fewer still
can match Agnes Denes in breadth,
scope, outrageousness and perseverance,” the sculpture park says of
the piece. “Her work is the product of
a fiercely intellectual and distinctive
study of semiotics, epistemology,
mathematics, history and ecology,
which are grounded in philosophical
inquiry and social observation.”
Nearby is IK Studio’s Folly Program award-winning piece, “Torqueing Spheres.” The piece transforms
a series of intertwining, sculpted
forms into a meandering curved folly
that encourages social interaction.
IK Studio’s proposal was selected
from 126 submissions from around
the world.
The piece features eight plywood domes, ranging from adult to
child-size that follow an undulating,
diminishing line along the adjacent
East River. The plywood is shaped by
a particular cold-bending method,
without the use of steam. Assembled
into their domes, two properties
emerge: sound reflected as echo,
and movement of the panels from
IK Studio’s “Torqueing Spheres,”

Trees in Balance,” right; Heide Fasnacht’s “Suspect Terrain,” above;
and more are on-view at Socrates
Sculpture Park in Long Island City
for the summer season.
humidity and weather. As the wood’s
fibers absorbed and lose moisture
over different weather conditions,
the bent panels are predefined to
close and open in their particular
directions.
Vera Lutter’s “Degas Horses” offers a different experience from its
art brethren. The internationally
acclaimed photographer created
ghostly images of subjects that vary
from urban centers to abandoned
factories to ancient monuments.
Like much of her work, “Degas
Horses” was taken using a camera
obscura – a centuries-old optical
device that uses light entering
through a small hole into a darkened
chamber to slowly capture an image
of its subjects.
Located at the main entrance of
the park, “Degas Horses” is part of
the Socrates Sculpture Park Broadway Billboard series.
Heide Fasnacht’s vision for her
latest work “Suspect Terrain” was to
detail the creation and aftermath of
a sinkhole. In the piece, the particularities of fragmentation span 50 feet
above ground and are detailed in
painted plywood – a stand-in for the
cement, asphalt and rock substrate
that the sculpture maps.
Fasnacht’s surface was inspired
by striking media coverage and
documentation of massive sinkholes, including the 26-foot-wide
by 52-foot-deep pit created in Shenzhen, China in 2013 and the hole in
Guatemala City in 2010. By sculpturally depicting the devastating geological occurrences, Fasnacht turns
the relationship between event and
documentation into a personal and
precarious action.
Artist Gabriela Albergaria’s work
covers one territory: Nature. Through
drawing, photography and sculpture
the artist seeks to examine and
deconstruct the cultural and social
beliefs surrounding images of the
natural. She builds on these concepts with “Two Trees in Balance”
now on display at Socrates Sculpture
Park, where she erected a 10-foot
concrete wall adorned with two
suspended trees. For Albergaria, the
piece is “the moment where human
and natural terrains intersect.”
As part of the installation, Albergaria meticulously reconstructed
dozens of branches and tree stumps
salvaged from across New York City
into two trees, which she suspends
diagonally off the ground from a
steel cable. Each tree hovers inbetween the wall and the earth,
poised in a precarious state by their
own equal weight.
But there is more than beautiful landscape and captivating art
at Socrates Sculpture Park. Back by
popular demand, in collaboration
with Rooftop Films, the outdoor art
space will present Outdoor Cinema,
an eight-week international
film festival to celebrate the
cultural diversity of Queens.
The program invites visitors to picnic on the grass,
see musical and dance performance, enjoy the cool
waterfront breeze as the sun
sets over the Manhattan skyline and watch exceptional
films on an outdoor screen.
Though the lineup has yet
to be announced, film buffs
can visit every Wednesday at
7 p.m., free of charge, beginning July 1.
Also coming up is the LIC
Bike Parade. The day-long
event on June 6, begins at
the park at 11 a.m. where kids
and adults can decorate their
bikes with Socrates artists.
The Department of Transportation will also be on-hand for free
helmet fittings and distributions.
Prior to the parade, which starts at
3 p.m., parents can upgrade their
child’s bike at a bike swap.
The parade will begin at the
Broadway entrance of the park and
end at Queensbridge Park at 3:30
p.m., where there will be a waterfront celebration for all to participate
in, free of charge.

Learn More About Jamaica’s Own Rufus King
By Carmine CarCieri
Do you want to enjoy family fun
activities at a historic house museum with interesting, significant artifacts that help preserve the legacy
of abolitionist Rufus King?
Families in New York, you’re in
luck because the King Manor Museum, led by an organization founded
in 1900, is offering a new, free “Facts
and Fun: King’s Manor Family Guide.”
This offer is filled with entertainment for parents, children and any
family members during any guided
tour at this historical building.
Located in Rufus King Park at
150-03 Jamaica Ave., the landmark
continues to use its strong, innovative tours and missions to teach
children and adults the legacy of
Rufus King, a signer of the U.S. Constitution and presidential candidate
from 200 years ago.
The family guide gives a unique,
interesting twist to gain relevance
on the topic and it helps the community preserve King, who was a
national figure in the early antislavery movement and had a major
impact on minority communities.
He passed away in Jamaica, where
his legacy has been greatly honored
since 1966.
Five different languages – Eng-
The King manor museum has a busy summer ahead.
lish, Spanish, Bengali, Hindu and
Urdu – are offered.
When at the museum, visitors will
see multiple portraits of King and his
exploration of free workers instead
of slavery over many years ago. Children will then get the opportunity
to interact, show their creativity and
draw portraits of themselves, similar
to what King created.
They can include their favorite col-
ors, most prized possessions, favorite
food and an exciting hobby that they
enjoy but what makes these activities
so entertaining is the ability to cherish
the moment with their parents and
other family members.
Another part of the family guide
includes reading and debating stories. King loved to read and owned
3,500 books. Reading is relevant
throughout the tour, especially when
groups come upon King’s library.
When making their way through
the exhibit, children and their families have an opportunity to have a
hands on approach that is not often
given at other museums.
The family guide is supported
by public funds from the New York
City Department of Cultural Affairs,
but the main impact will be related
to education, awareness and preservation of history throughout
Queens.
Tours are offered Thursday and
Friday from 12 to 2 p.m. while they
are also offered Saturday’s and
Sunday’s from 1 to 5 p.m. Organized
groups are welcome to use the Family Guide but must reserve a reservation before hand.
In addition to the new Family Guide, the museum holds other
workshops including hands-on
history, a free drop-in program
held one Saturday per month that
educates young children through
stories and arts and craft projects.
Children are able to build their own
books, but this program is only available on specific weekends.
The museum also has concerts
and guest speakers on its schedule.
More information on the new program and a copy of the family guide
can be found at kingmanor.org.
Grab A Paddle And Hit The East River
By ariel Hernandez
The weather is getting warmer
and life is getting shorter, so why
not find a way to keep cool and be
spontaneous at the same time? Now
you’re wondering what that could
possibly be …
Kayaking in the East River.
The Long Island City Community
Boathouse is partnering with Socrates Sculpture Park to provide free
kayaking all summer long, on select
weekends, at Hallet’s Cove in Astoria, home to the NYC Water Trail.
According to chairperson, John
McGarvey, LIC Boathouse is a free,
all volunteer, community boathouse
that brings kayaking to all and installs a sense of stewardship, access
rights, safety and healthy fun.
The program is open to everybody who’s anybody. Whether
you’re a pro-kayaker or don’t know
what a kayak is, this is your opportunity to test your skills, with the
company of the beautiful Manhattan scenery.
“Kayaking is a super easy and
healthy way to see NYC as what it
really is, an Archipelago of islands,”
McGarvey said. “As soon as folks get
out on the water and away from
land, they get a sense of the
broad open space between
the islands and our amazing
estuary and ecosystem that
we have and must protract.”
Within recent years, LIC
Boathouse has allowed people to bring their dogs to
engage in the experience.
Last year, LIC had its biggest
dog turnout, resulting in
the requirement of dog life
vests.
“My favorite part are the
smiles on the happy people
and doggies when they come back
on shore,” McGarvey said.
A kayak is a boat-like flotation
device that you sit in, face-forward
with your legs straight in front of
you. Next, you use a double-bladed
paddle to steer you in whichever
direction you are trying to go in. In
addition to the closed deck kayaks,
sit-on-top and inflatable kayaks are
becoming the most popular kayaks,
which LIC Boathouse offers.
In case you’ve never participated
in kayaking with LIC Boathouse,
when you arrive, there will be volunteers waiting to greet you. Everyone
must read and sign a waiver and
minors must be accompanied by

to participate in future

FORECLOSURE RESCUE
SCAMS Be careful of people
who approach you with offers
to “save” your home. There
are individuals who watch for
notices of foreclosure actions
in order to unfairly profit from
a homeowner’s distress. You
should be extremely careful
about any such promises and
any suggestions that you pay
them a fee or sign over your
deed. State law requires
anyone offering such services
for profit to enter into a contract which fully describes the
services they will perform and
fees they will charge, and
which prohibits them from
taking any money from you
until they have completed all
such promised services.

LEISURE
Orchestra Season Finale To Help Nepal
By Domenick RafteR
Editor in Chief
The Queensboro Symphony Orchestra will conclude their first season this
Sunday with a special concert benefitting the victims of the recent devastating earthquake in Nepal.
The performance will be held this
Sunday, May 31, at Mary’s Nativity
Church in Flushing.
Led by maestro Dong-hyun Kim, the
orchestra will perform Tchaikovsky’s
5th Symphony, Mozart’s Horn Concerto #3, featuring Peter DelGrosso,
and a version of the Nepalese national
anthem, arranged by Paul Joseph
“We had this concert planned anyway, but in light of what happened in
Nepal, we decided it would be nice
dedicate it to them,” Paul Joseph, the
orchestra’s founder, said.
More than 8,000 people were killed
when a earthquake struck Nepal on
April 25. The quake, which hit 7.8 on
the Richter scale, destroyed many historical and cultural sites in the poor,
underdeveloped Himalayan country
and triggered avalanches on Mount
Everest that killed 19 people.
The concert is free with an encouraged donation to two groups raising
funds for the earthquake victims –
Catholic Relief Services and the Korea
Times, which is fundraising for several
organizations.
Joseph said he decided to arrange a
special version of the Nepalese national
anthem after thinking hard about what
kind of memorial to do for the victims
of the quake.
“We wanted something memoriamlike to start the concert with, and I really didn’t have anything,” he said.
So Joseph listened to Nepalese music and was especially inspired by the
country’s national anthem.
“It’s a beautiful melody,” he said. “I
thought that I could make it more solemn and prayerful by slowing it down
and arranging it for an orchestra.”
Joseph said he has been pleased
with the Queensborough Symphony
Orchestra’s first season, which began
on March 22 with a debut concert at
Mary’s Nativity Church.
“We had tremendous audience turnout,” he said, tallying the total at about
400 people per concert.
“The audience is excited about [the
orchestra.] People want to get involved,”
Joseph added.
There will be a second season, he
said, beginning in September.
Sunday’s concert begins at 7 p.m.
Mary’s Nativity Church is located at
46-02 Parsons Blvd. in Flushing.
Parking lot on Jasmine Ave. Handicapped entrance on Holly Ave.
The Queensboro Symphony Orchestra’s season finale concert
will honor Nepal Earthquake
victims.
‘Mad Men’ Exhibition Extended Thru Aug.
By caRmine caRcieRi
Matthew Weiner’s “Mad Men” exhibition, which opened March 14 at
Museum of the Moving Image, has been
extended through the summer and will
close on Sunday, Sept. 6.
Carl Goodman, the Museum’s executive director announced the news
on Tuesday, pointing to the tremendous feedback they received from New
Yorkers.
“A landmark TV series, ‘Mad Men’
will continue to be watched, discussed,
and studied for years to come. Given
the extraordinary popularity of the exhibition, which has attracted a broader
public beyond fans of the show, the mu-
Matthew Weiner’s “Mad Men” will be at the Museum of the Moving Image through the summer.
seum is very pleased to extend its run,”
Goodman said in a written statement.
The exhibition explores the creative
process that built the popular sevenseason television series by showing
large-scale sets, hundreds of props,
33 costumes, production material,
personal notes, books and research
material that were used by series creator
Matthew Weiner.
The iconic costumes from the series
that are highlighted in the exhibition
include Don Draper’s suit, Joan Holloway’s green dress and Stan Rizzo’s
fringe jacket. The significant props
include Don Draper’s box with objects
which reveal his true identity, the fullpage ad featuring Don’s letter “Why I’m
Quitting Tobacco,” and Sally Draper’s
letter to Santa.
On top of all of the unique costumes
and props, the ‘Mad Men’ exhibition
shows mood boards created by costume
designer Janie Bryant. The mood boards
are created for the characters Peggy Olson, Don Draper, Roger Sterling, Betty
Draper, Joan Holloway/Harris and Pete
Campbell.
But the most impressive part of
the exhibition might be the original
interviews with Weiner, a film series
featuring movies that inspired the
show and an installation of elements
from the writers’ room where he and
his team crafted story ideas and scripts
for “Mad Men.”
This display, initially scheduled to
close on June 14, also gives the audience a unique insight into the series
and how the original show was installed
and crafted.
The exhibition was organized and
designed by Barbara Miller, the museum’s curator of the collection and
exhibitions and Wendell Walker, deputy
director for operations, exhibitions and
design.
The Museum of Moving Image is
located at 36-01 35 Ave. in Astoria and
is open from Wednesday and Thursday
from 10:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., Friday from
10:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Saturday through
Sunday from 11:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. In order
to avoid lines on weekend days, visitors
should arrive before 2 p.m.
For museum admission is $12 for
adults, $9 for persons over 65 and for
students with ID, $6 for children ages
3-12 and free for children under 3. Museum members, sign ups can be found
at movingimage.us/support/membership for free admittance.
For more information on the extension of Matthew Weiner’s “Mad Men”
exhibition visit movingimage.us or call

Forest Hills Student Helps Take Tennis Title
By RoBeRt elkin
Although a Manhattan-based high school
once again captured the Public Schools Athletic
League team tennis championship, part of its success goes to a resident of Queens, who has played
the sport for ten years.
Felipe Osses Konig, of Beacon High School,
commutes to school from his home in Forest Hills.
Not only was his father a tennis player, but
they also reside near the West Side Tennis Club,
former home of the U.S. Open.
Konig, a senior at Beacon, defeated Phil Raytburg of Brooklyn Tech High School, 6-2, 6-7 (5-7),
6-2, to help give his squad its eighth straight team
title in the PSAL at the National Tennis Center in
Flushing Meadows Corona Park.
Now both schools are competing in the Mayor’s Cup tournament, combining the PSAL and
Catholic High Schools Athletic Association. Most
of the matches are being contested in their new
facility in the Bronx.
However, Konig is skipping the Mayor’s Cup
this year. Instead, he will play in the New York
State Tournament at the National Tennis Center.
“There are a lot of good players who came out
of the Mayor’s Cup,” Konig said. after his match
last week at the National Tennis Center. “But the
State Tournament helps qualify for an Eastern
USTA ranking whereas the Mayor’s Cup doesn’t.
Felipe Osses Konig
There aren’t any points competing in the Mayor’s
Cup for such a ranking. When I was a freshman I
played in the Mayor’s Cup tournament.
“Playing in the Mayor’s Cup is nothing but
pride and competition with a good group of guys,”
he went on. “And I see how they match up with
others. It’s a great experience for non-tournament
players to be able to play matches and be able to
get a Mayor’s Cup title. It’s a very good title to
have. It [symbolizes] the best in the City.”
When decision time came Konig didn’t think
that Benjamin Cardozo High
School, located in Bayside, was motivated for tennis and didn’t have
decent players.
When Konig was young, he
played at the Forest Hills-based
Tennis Club where his father Patricio Osses Konig was his coach.
They belong to the WSTC and the
father gave his son pointers about
the sport.
“He developed my mental game
and my physical game,” the student athlete said. “Without him, I
wouldn’t have been on the level I
am right now.”
With his high school days now
behind him, he intends to enter
Elon University in North Carolina
for his college education.
“Elon had a very good tennis team last year,”
Konig continued, “They give a lot of attention to
their athletes, and that’s very important to me.”
Meanwhile, his current high school team, Beacon is riding sky high, something that at one time
Cardozo did, and something that the youngster
could be very proud of.
During the summer, Konig will be staying in
shape for the fall season during the summer as he
takes his sport of tennis up to the next level.
