from Team Carnival
How time flies. That’s
another year gone and
it’s carnival time again.
Our big news for 2016 is
that we’ve expanded.
Partly because of building
work at Elthorne Park High
School, the carnival will be held
not just in the main park but
also in the rear extension.
The main stages, beer and food
will be at the back. The fairground,
children’s attractions, dog show,
acoustic tent and all the stalls
will remain in the main section.
That means more room for
even more fun, so don’t forget
to check out both areas.
so this year ECT (everyone will
have seen their green buses
around Ealing) is teaming up with
Ealing Centre for Independent
Living (ECIL) to ensure people
with mobility issues can come to
carnival, secure in the knowledge
they will be dropped off in a safe
place and they will have a ride
home (see page 23 for details).
In other news, the more
eagle-eyed surfers out there
will have already noticed our
brand spanking new website,
courtesy of Darren Moore of Now
Communications in Brentford.
So go have a look and hopefully
it will inspire you to get involved
because as ever, Hanwell Carnival
would love to hear from people
willing to help out, whether it
is on the day or in the run-up.
On the sporting front, carnival is

people took part, representing
schools, charities, sports
clubs and faith groups.

Food and drink
A day out at carnival wouldn’t be
complete without something to
eat and drink. This year the main
food stands are in the back field.
Wood fired pizza, Oriental, Spanish,
Caribbean and Mexican as well as
good old burgers and a hog roast. If
you need a drink to wash it all down,
the beer tent– with draught beerand our Pimms tent are nearby.

with the purpose to raise money for Ealing
Hospital (formerly known as the Cottage
Hospital).

Simon Bishop, a top soundman
at the BBC, mixes the sound
on the music stage. He says:
“Keith gets up early and makes
sure that all the plans and

13.00 POWER CORRUPTION AND LIES
This Ealing-based combo is
inspired by electronic acts like
Portishead and New Order.
Their mantra is:

13.45 THE COLD HEAD
Doug, Marco and Kosmos are
a rock, dance, pop act who
have been gigging since 2014.
Hanwell man Doug is the band’s
leader and songwriter. He says
the group has a wide range of
influences encompassing Bowie,
Public Enemy, Toots and the
Maytals, Talking Heads, Bjork and
Peter Gabriel. They have an EP
called Baby it’s Cold Inside. Well
let’s hope it’s not cold outside
‘cos we are going to want to
dance when they get going.

14.30 ACE MOTIF
Ace Motif is only 22 but he’s
already been performing music
for 11 years. Currently studying
English Literature at university,
he’s not only a talented singer,
songwriter and rapper but
also lists acting and modeling
among his accomplishments.
He says he wants to channel his
passion for the arts and use it
to challenge – even smash - the
stereotypes people have about
young black men. He’s also
good at freestyling – making
up songs off the top of his head
or even using words or phrases
shouted out by the audience.

London singer-songwriter, Iman
has written with Ed Sheeran,
toured with Rudimental, and
now she’s ready to step into the
spotlight with her own material.
Championed by seminal Jazz
DJ Gilles Peterson, Iman is not
only a talented artist with a
distinctive voice but also a highly
sought -after songwriter whose
material has been recorded by
artists all over Europe. Her songs
embrace pop, soul, R&B and
electronic. Her talent doesn’t stop

The Fleas, a five-piece from
Playing live is what has won the
band a formidable reputation as a
uniquely compelling live act since
forming in 2010. “Our approach
has always been to make music
we like and music we’re proud of,”
says Jamie. And they love carnival,

going to as a kid and always

Ealing Centre for Independent Living
and Ealing Community Transport
ECT’s green buses are a familiar
sight around Ealing. The charity
does invaluable work providing
accessible transport for people
with mobility difficulties
or with a lack of access to
transport to live independent
lives and participate in their
communities.

back in ‘79 and now operates in
Cheshire, Cornwall and Dorset
but the headquarters remain in
Greenford.
Working collaboratively with local
partners, ECT provides minibuses
for community and voluntary

unable to use mainstream public
transport.
ECT is also known for delivering
the Accessible Shuttle service
at the London 2012 Olympic
and Paralympic Games - the
largest operation of its kind ever
attempted. This success was
repeated at the inaugural Invictus
Games 2014 in London, as well as
the 2015 Rugby World Cup.

ECT Charity, an award-winning
provider of local community

ANIMAL ZONE
One of carnival’s most popular
attractions is back again, with
its petting zoo, pony rides and
crocodiles.
The petting farm is provided by
Appreciating Animals - a mobile
zoo that takes all sorts of animals
to schools, residential homes
and public events. You’ll have
the chance to get up close and
personal with loads of cute and
cuddly creatures.
The shows will be timed and in
each one you’ll first see a large
crocodile and learn all about
them – plus ask any questions
you might have – and then you’ll
get to see and even hold some
smaller ones. Buy your tickets at
the Animal Zone, go and have a
look around some of the other
attractions then come back for
your show.
There’s always a queue for our
pony rides where children often
experience sitting in a saddle for
the first time. This year there will
be more ponies – so hopefully
you won’t have to wait as long.
The UK’s only crocodile zoo
– Crocodiles of the World in
Oxfordshire – is rapidly becoming
a carnival tradition.

WHAT CARNIVAL MEANS
TO CHARITIES
The carnival is London’s
oldest, first taking place in
1898, and it was established
to raise money for the Cottage
Hospital, now Ealing Hospital.
Charity is still the carnival’s
reason for being, and many
stalls will be occupied by groups
highlighting their cause and
hoping to raise some money.
As charities are so important
to the carnival, their stalls are
subsidised which means they
only pay half the cost. Charities
also take part in the procession.
Abid Hussain is a carnival
stalwart. He runs a sweet stand
as a business but every year he
donates the profits from a few
events he attends – of which
carnival is one - to the Imran
Khan Cancer Appeal (IKCA).
The charity, whose founding
chairman is cricket legend turned
politician Imran Khan, helps
run the only cancer hospital in
Pakistan which provides free
cancer treatment to patients
who cannot afford it.

SPORTS ZONE
SPORTS ZONE Brentford FC are
making their first appearance
at carnival this year and we are
delighted to have them onside.
The club’s Community Sports
Trust will be taking over two
courts at the back of Elthorne
Park. On the astroturf pitch,

it’ll be running football-based
activities throughout the day.
On the second pitch, there will
be a mixture of sports including
Ultimate Frisbee, Basketball and
Dodgeball.
Activities are suitable for
children aged 5-18, and the

coaches will organise players
into their respective age groups
for the games. There is no limit
on numbers and there’s no cost.
An application form must be
completed before taking part
in any of the activities, but this
is done on the day itself. Greg

Trailfinders
It’s a year of firsts in the sports
zone, with Ealing Trailfinders
Rugby Club putting its weight
behind carnival. The club will be
tackling another of the courts
and all ages are welcome to
come and play rugby with
their experienced coaches and
professional players. There’s
no limit on numbers and again,
there’s no cost. Natalie Winton,
marketing and communications
manager at the club, said:
“Hanwell Carnival is one of
Ealing’s biggest celebrations of
what is good about our area.
“We are delighted to be a part of
what appears to be quite a line-up
and like us run by an army of willing
volunteers. “Many Hanwellians
have supported our club on our
rise through the leagues, notably
when we won the 2015 National 1
to take us to our current position in
the Championship, so it is a great
way to come and hang out in their
manor with some prizes on offer.”

Royalty 2016
Hanwell Carnival has chosen
its three VIPs to lead the
2016 procession.
Prince Alex, who attends Oaklands
Primary School in Hanwell, said:
“I’m looking forward to the parade
and people waving at you”.
The new Queen is Lovely Vaid,
princess is Holly FitzgeraldMunro and Alex Chudek was
crowned the prince.
The eight-year-old is a real
community champion and loves
Hanwell for its “nice people”.

Councillor Joanna Camadoo and
former carnival queen Jo Evans had a tough job deciding between
the applicants at the selection
event in Hanwell Community
Centre on Sunday 24 April.
The mayor said it was a very difficult
decision and paid tribute to the
organisers of Hanwell Carnival.
Ms Camadoo said: “There was
a great range of candidates,
all very enthusiastic.”
Holly, eight, who lives in West Ealing
and is a pupil at St Mark’s Primary
in Hanwell, is “looking forward to
seeing all the people smiling”.
She goes to carnival every year
and is a big fan of the dog show.
The new queen is no stranger to
Hanwell Carnival – beautician and
mother-of-two Lovely Vaid has been
part of our royal family before.
Mrs Vaid, 31, from Greenford, said:
“I like to help the community. I
really enjoyed the day and wanted
to be involved in carnival again.”

BEATING THE BOUNDS
This year’s Beating the Bounds
took place on Bank Holiday
Monday (May 2nd) and it was a
rather chilly day. Nonetheless
55 people and several dogs
set off on the historic threehour walk around Hanwell’s
ancient boundaries – to
ensure they were all intact and
undamaged by insurgents
from neighbouring parishes.

Bishopp, who moved to Hanwell
in 2015, it was the perfect way to
spend the day and get to know
the area. “We went to the Hootie
this year and last, and we wanted
to get a feel of another aspect
to the community,” said Fiona.
Before the walk they were
attentively reading the booklet all
participants receive in return for
a donation, which goes towards
carnival (£200 was raised in total).
The eight-mile/12 km walk
takes in many of Hanwell’s best
known features - the Grand
Union Canal, Bunny Park,
Wharncliffe Viaduct and some
