The Certificate of International Competence gives you a great
opportunity to enrich your stay in Germany by stimulating
extra-curricular activities and encouraging intercultural
exchange with German students. By promoting intercultural
awareness and competence, the Certificate assists you in
making your study abroad semester at the University of
Bonn a truly international experience.

Intercultural
trainings and international lectures
The University of Bonn awards students engaged in
extra-curricular activities and intercultural exchange the
Certificate of International Competence.
German and international students who attend extracurricular language courses, lectures or seminars related
to an international topic and who promote intercultural
exchange between German and international students may
receive credits for the Certificate.
For completion, you need to fulfill three of the four
components pictured above. In case you are staying for
a limited number of semesters, please be aware that it
usually takes about two semesters to collect all necessary
credits. You may acquire the Certificate at any point in time
during your studies, regardless of whether you pursue a
Bachelor or a Master degree or whether you are enrolled in
a PhD programme at the University of Bonn.
Components of the Certificate
How it Works
A) International Experience Component
- Studying at the University of Bonn or
pursuing a PhD.
Registration
Please fill out our online application form at
www.zertifikat.uni-bonn.de
B) Academic Component
- Language courses (50 hrs) + one lecture series with
a focus on German or international studies
/attendance of a summer school in Germany or
- 3 lectures covering a topic related to German or
international cultural studies (2 hours/week each)
/attendance of 3 summer schools in Germany.
Confirmation
Once you have registered, we will confirm your application via
email.
C) Ambassador Component
Promoting intercultural exchange:
- participating in a Buddy-Programme
- participation in or organisation of events
at the International Office
- representation of your home country at the
University of Bonn
- active membership in an international student
initiative or organisation.
D) Global Awareness Component
- participation in a two-day workshop with an
international focus, e.g. an Intercultural Training
- attending international events, lectures etc.
at the University of Bonn or elsewhere.
Checklist / Portfolio
We will attach a checklist to our confirmation email. You should

use this document to collect signatures for the courses, workshops,
and activities that you attend, eventually building your portfolio.
Newsletter
Upon registration, we will also add your email address to our
mailing list, so that you receive our monthly newsletter on exciting
international events, workshops and scholarship programmes.
International Office
Once you have gathered the required amount of points in three of
the four components, please sign your completed portfolio and
include copies of documents confirming your participation in
classes, activities etc.
For completion, hand in the signed portfolio, including the aforementioned copies during our office hours. You may be contacted if
it appears that some documents are missing or incomplete.
Completion
You will receive a double-sided certificate (German/English).
We will inform you by E-Mail as soon as you can pick it up in the
International Office.
