F EAST OF THE H OLY F AMILY
This time of year, many families come together to
celebrate. It is also a time when we remember parents,
spouses, children and loved ones who have died and
feel their loss in a special way. The Church invites us to
reflect on our families and to seek in the family life of Jesus, as well as in
his teaching and example, inspiration and encouragement as we try to
renew and deepen our life together.
The Church sees the family as the basic cell of society and as “little
churches.” In the family we grow in the faith and love of God and in love
for each other. All human beings are called to form a single family of
God. The Church, for its part, is made up of those who know themselves
to be members of that family because of their relationship to Jesus. For
such an ideal to become real for us, we need to experience it in our
parishes and in small communities. We need, above all, to experience it
in our own individual families. The Church as a family comes alive to the
extent that our families themselves become domestic churches. If Christ
lives in us, then we can be sure that he also lives in our family. It is up to
us to make him visible in the way that we treat one another.
A New Year
On New Year’s Day the Church places Mary before us because of her
faith. Like us, she needed faith to journey into the unknown. Mary’s faith
can inspire us in the faith we need for our journey into the unknown, and
her prayers will support us on the way. The Church challenges us to
make our won the words of Mary: “Behold the handmaid of the Lord. May
it be done to me according to your word.” These words will give a deeper
meaning to our lives, when we not only say what Mary said but do what
she did—allow Christ to be born in us. Then we truly rejoice in the Lord
and have true joy and peace.
On this New Year’s Day we can make our own the words of an English
writer from the first decade of the twentieth century: “And I said to the
man who stood at the gate of the year: ‘Give me a light that I may tread
safely into the unknown.’ And he replied, “Go out into the darkness and
put your hand into the hand of God. That shall be to you better than a
light and safer than a known way.’” (Louise Haskins - God Knows, 1908)

RESPECT LIFE
ABORTION NON-DISCRIMINATION ACT - Your action is
needed to urge Congress to protect the rights of conscientious
objectors to abortion, sterilization, and contraception. Real protection is possible, but Congress needs to hear from you today... The Abortion Non-Discrimination Act (ANDA) provides
conscientious objectors a means for protecting their conscience
rights through legal action. Contact your members of Congress
to support ANDA. Immediate action is necessary. Right now,
Catholic schools and institutions are being forced to cover abortion—even late-term abortion—in their health plans. Right now,
Catholic health professionals are being coerced into participation in abortion, sterilization, and contraception in violation of
federal law. Contact your elected representatives today and
ask them to support ANDA. Thank you for doing your part to
protect conscience rights and to build a Culture of Life.
- Carl A. Anderson, Supreme Knight, Knights of Columbus
PRAYER & WORSHIP
PRAYER FOR JUBILEE YEAR OF MERCY - Pope Francis has declared a Holy Year of Mercy that began on December 8, 2015 and will end on November 20, 2016. If you would
like a copy of “The Official Prayer for the Extraordinary Jubilee
of Mercy” they are available on the table in the church narthex.
GREETER VOLUNTEERS - We still need a few more
people, especially for 8:00 Masses. We also need subs to fill
in for our Greeters. If interested, please contact Marcia Olenchock (843) 314-9333 or email: [email protected].
USHERS NEEDED! Ushers are needed for all Masses.
Training is provided. If interested, please contact
Debbie Barrett, 843-215-6463 or email: [email protected].
CHOIR NOTES... With our new season of Adult
and Youth Choirs beginning, we'd like to enhance
our Liturgies even more and are the lookout for
more voices and to add musicians. To sing with either of our
choirs you do not need to read music - just have a love of singing praise to our Lord. We welcome any instrumentalists to
join us, also. Please contact Renée Faiella at (843) 485-3515
or [email protected] if you'd be willing and able to
share your talents with us.
COMMUNION TO THE HOMEBOUND - Let us know if
your loved one is confined to home, in the hospital or recovering from surgery and now home. (Hospitals will not give out
patient information, so we have no way of knowing your
needs.) Our ministry is to unite the sick and recovering followers of Christ with the Body of Christ, they are not ALONE.
Please call the parish office at 843-237-3428, or our coordinator Anne Hunt at 843-237-0401.
ADULT EDUCATION
INSPIRATIONAL CATHOLIC CDS, BOOKS, &
BROCHURES On the way into church, you will see a stand
offering different CDs, books, and different brochures. These
feature some of the most inspiring Catholic speakers -- bishops, priests, deacons and eminent Catholic lay men and women. The CDs and brochures will be available after every Mass.
When these are gone, a new set with different titles and
speakers will be ordered. We encourage you to take advantage of this wonderful opportunity... for yourselves and to
share with others…friends and family members, Godchildren,
college students…
We ask for a donation of $3.00 per CD and $.50 per pamphlet
so that we may continue this program. Also, books are just
$5. Won’t you reach out and help bring someone home?
