Adventures, The Car Man is loosely based on Bizet’s
popular opera (CARMEN) and has one of the most thrilling
and instantly recognisable scores in classical music,
brilliantly arranged by Terry Davies. The familiar 19th
Century Spanish cigarette factory becomes a
greasy garage-diner in 1960’s America
where the dreams and passions of
a small-town are shattered
by the arrival of a handsome stranger. Fuelled by
heat and desire, the inhabitants are driven into an
unstoppable spiral of greed, lust, betrayal and revenge.
Lez Brotherston’s epic design, Chris Davey’s evocative
lighting and Matthew Bourne’s vivid storytelling take in a
wealth of cinematic references, creating a powerful and
uncompromising vision of small-town America.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Alice Through the Looking

In 2014, genetically mutated turtles Michelangelo, Raphael,
Donatello and Leonardo stormed the big screen in Michael
Bay’s action-packed reboot of the Teenage Mutant
Ninja Turtles franchise. Now they’re back to confront
their deadliest enemy: The Shredder, who has enlisted
scientist Dr. Baxter Stockman to create the deadly Bebop
and Rocksteady. Meanwhile, the Turtles are also forced
to contend with a New York invasion led by supervillain
Krang. Luckily, they have allies in the former of rat mentor
Splinter, reporter April O’Neill, Vern Fenwick and vigilante
Casey Jones. A host of franchise favourites make their
debut in this explosive Turtles sequel, which sees Johnny
Knoxville, Jeremy Howard, Noel Fisher and Alan Ritchson
reprise their vocal roles as our wisecracking heroes. Alice Kingsleigh (Wasikowska) has spent the past few
years following in her father’s footsteps and sailing the
high seas. Upon her return to London, she comes across
a magical looking glass and returns to the fantastical
realm of Underland and her friends the White Rabbit
(Sheen), Absolem (Rickman), the Cheshire Cat (Fry) and
the Mad Hatter (Depp), who is not himself. The Hatter has
lost his Muchness, so Mirana (Hathaway) sends Alice on a
quest to borrow the Chronosphere, a metallic globe inside
the chamber of the Grand Clock which powers all time.
Returning to the past, she comes across friends – and
enemies – at different points in their lives, and embarks
on a perilous race to save the Hatter before time runs

Shetland Arts presents the first of our ScreenFocus
seasons, celebrating the work of Quentin Tarantino.
These films have been carefully chosen by Shetland
Arts to showcase one of the most innovative
filmmakers of our time. ScreenFocus has been set-up
to exhibit all forms of film to Shetland from different
studios, directors, actors and film genres. Watch out
for more ScreenFocus seasons showing throughout
the year at Mareel.
Jackie Brown (15)
Inglourious Basterds (18)
Quentin Tarantino’s acclaimed adaptation of Elmore
Leonard’s Rum Punch follows a cash-smuggling flight
attendant who is busted by an ATF agent and a cop. When
pressured to help with their investigation, she agrees to
do one last run for a ruthless arms dealer. Mistrust and
suspicions arise when Jackie plays the opposing forces
against each other in an effort to walk away with the
dough. Robert Forster earned a Best Supporting Actor Oscar
nomination for his role as Max Cherry, a bail bondsman who
falls for Jackie and becomes embroiled in the scheme.
A Jewish cinema owner in Nazi-occupied Paris is forced to
host a movie premiere for the Third Reich, where a radical
group of American soldiers, The Basterds, led by Lt. Aldo
Raine (Brad Pitt), plan to roll out a score-settling scheme.
The film was honoured with an Academy Award® for
Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role (2009,
Christoph Waltz) and earned seven total nominations,
including Best Motion Picture of the Year for Lawrence
Bender and Best Writing, Original Screenplay for Quentin

In 2014, Simon Gall (Salsa Celtica) and Jonny Hardie Old Blind Dogs) created Clype, a new project fusing sounds
and styles from around the globe, borrowing from Scottish folk traditions as well as from the rhythms of Latin
America and harmonic ideas of jazz. Their first album has garnered rave reviews and was nominated for album
of the year at the Scottish Trad Awards. This is exciting and inventive music from two of Scotland’s finest
musicians.

(Bridesmaids, The Heat, Tammy) stars as a titan of
industry who is sent to prison after she’s caught for
insider trading. When she emerges ready to rebrand
herself as America’s latest sweetheart, not everyone
she screwed over is so quick to forgive and forget.
Holland March (Ryan Gosling) is a down-on-his-luck private
eye barely scraping a living in 1970s Los Angeles. Jackson
Healey (Russell Crowe) is a tough guy enforcer who
thinks with his fists. When these two polar opposites are
unexpectedly thrown together in the search for a missing
girl, a darkly hilarious and fast-moving mystery unfolds
as they plunge ever further into the city’s seedy underbelly. A Hologram for the King (12A)
Our Kind of Traitor (15)
Tom Hanks headlines this hilarious comedy-drama based
on the novel by Dave Eggers. Newly divorced Alan Clay
(Hanks) needs some luck in his life. So when a possible
IT contract in Saudi Arabia rears its head, he seizes it
with both hands. Clay pitches to the king a massive
development in the desert, but after travelling to the
country, jetlagged and under intense pressure from
his bosses, he’s dismayed to learn that the monarch is
nowhere to be found! Perry (Ewan McGregor) and his girlfriend Gail are on
holiday in Morocco when they meet the wealthy and
charismatic Dima. The couple soon find out that Dima
is not quite what he seems and is in fact a long-time
associate of the Russian mafia, who now want him dead.
Dima’s only hope is to convince Perry and Gail to broker
him sanctuary with the British intelligence services.
Together, Dima, Perry and Gail brave a tortuous journey
through Paris, the Swiss Alps and London… Money Monster (15)
Me Before You (12A)
Lee Gates (Clooney) is the host of a high-rated financial
programme on TV, offering tips to its money-hungry viewers.
But when one viewer, Kyle Budwell (Jack O’Connell), loses
all his money due to one of Gates’ tips, things soon take a
turn for the worse for the well-to-do TV presenter. Budwell
manages to take over the studio, and during a tense
standoff broadcast to millions on live TV, he orders Gates
to find out what happened. The answer, it seems, points to
a conspiracy at the heart of today’s fast-paced, high-tech
global markets. Also starring Julia Roberts.
Louisa Clark (Emilia Clarke) is an unambitious, recently
unemployed young woman looking for a change in her
life. And that’s exactly what she gets when she agrees to
become a companion for handsome William Traynor (Sam
Claflin), whose promising career was tragically cut short
when he was paralysed in a devastating accident. Although
their relationship is at first tentative and spiky, a tender
romance soon develops with William ultimately teaching
Louisa the importance of getting the most out of life.

Join us for an edible and audible feast of food and
music. After spending the afternoon rehearsing with
local musicians, Scottish Ensemble will put down their
instruments and don their aprons to make a meal
alongside members of the community, with local cook
and food writer, Marian Armitage in charge. Marian’s 2015
book ‘Shetland Food and Cooking’ has been shortlisted
for a Gourmand World Cookbook Award). The audience
are then invited to join the musicians, to share them for
an evening of music and food.
SE Musicians will be working with local schoolchildren in
a series of workshops.

THE LOUNGE
Ideal for 3-9 year olds. Join five musical characters on a
fun-filled tale of adventure, friendship and sibling rivalry
in which narration is brought to life by live music from
Scottish Ensemble musicians. This captivating 60-minute
play is aimed at primary school children, introducing
them to string instruments in a fun way by turning them
into a range of characters on a musical adventure.
SE Musicians will also be present at the Lounge, Lerwick,
to take part in an informal session. All welcome.

SE Musicians head out and about in the isles, performing
at a number of locations, including Wastview Care Home,
Aith Junior High, Brae High School, Northhavn Care Home,
Burravoe Primary School and The Old Haa.
The UK’s leading string orchestra performs a heady
mix of French music from the turn of the century,
featuring gems by Ravel, Debussy and Fauré. Also
including Tchaikovsky’s sonorous Serenade for Strings,
this promises to be an exquisite summer’s evening of
evocative music, painted by strings.

Where We’re Meant to Be (15)
From director John Carney (ONCE, BEGIN AGAIN), SING
STREET takes us back to 1980s Dublin seen through the
eyes of a 14-year-old boy named Conor (Ferdia WalshPeelo) who is looking for a break from a home strained
by his parents’ relationship and money troubles, while
trying to adjust to his new inner-city public school
where the kids are rough and the teachers are rougher.
He finds a glimmer of hope in the mysterious, über-cool
and beautiful Raphina (Lucy Boynton), and with the aim
of winning her heart he invites her to star in his band’s
music videos. There’s only one problem: he’s not part of
a band...yet.
Cult-pop raconteur Aidan Moffat sets out to explore
Scotland’s past by rewriting and touring its oldest songs.
But he doesn’t count on running into 79-year-old force
of nature Sheila Stewart – a travelling balladeer who
upturns Moffat’s folk assumptions. He believes the old
songs are ripe for updating. She does not. With Stewart’s
wrath ringing in his ears, Moffat embarks on a road trip
that finds him dressed for battle in a Highland graveyard,
caught between feuding monster-hunters at Loch Ness,
and singing in a dismissive farmer’s kitchen – before
facing Stewart in his home-town of Glasgow for an
unlikely final showdown, in this funny wee film about
music and death.

in with the other birds. But now, he may be the only
one who can save their island. When a ship full of

investigate the pigs and find out why they came to the

Shetland Arts’ Creativity Camp will allow 7-11 year olds a
chance to explore a range of skills in film, drama, dance,
music, literature, visual art and crafts, while developing
confidence, encouraging creativity and having lots of
fun! Sessions run from 9am – 5pm starting Sunday 24
th July, running daily through to Thursday 28th July. The
block will culminate in a brand new performance for
friends and family.
Some sessions during the week will be active, so
children should wear clothes that they can move
comfortably in. There will be a supervised lunch hour, so
please bring a packed lunch.

Beyond Presents is extremely proud to announce a
tour of the Highlands & Islands with KT Tunstall as she
prepares to launch her fifth album.
John Osborne’s modern classic conjures the seedy
glamour of the old music halls for an explosive
examination of public masks and private torment.

An adrenaline-fuelled heist thriller set on the streets of
nighttime Berlin shot in a single, unbroken take. Victoria,
a young woman from Madrid, meets four local guys
outside a nightclub in the early hours of the morning.
Striking up a friendship, they take to a nearby rooftop
to continue the night. But when the group are suddenly
forced to repay a debt to a member of the city’s criminal
underworld, the night quickly spirals out of control.
Winner of the Palme d’Or at the 2015 Cannes Film Festival,
the new film from acclaimed director Jacques Audiard (A
Prophet) is a gripping, human tale of survival. On the losing
side of a civil war in Sri Lanka, a Tamil soldier (Antonythasan
Jesuthasan) poses as the husband and father of two other
refugees in order to escape their ravaged homeland. Arriving
in France, the makeshift “family” sets about establishing a
new life-only to find themselves once again embroiled in
violence on the mean streets of Paris.

The Man Who Knew Infinity(12A)
A relationship comedy shot in just five days in the Black
Mountains of Wales. Alice Lowe and Dolly Wells star as a pair
of on-the-run sisters who assume the identities of poets to
find refuge at a poetry/camping weekend. Downton Abbey’s
Tom Cullen stars as the poet who comes between them. The
improvised dialogue – including some magnificent one-liners
and an unforgettable dramatic rendering of a barcode – is
fresh, hilarious and witty and Ryan Owen Eddleston’s
cinematography makes the scenery soar.
The true story of Srinivasa Ramanujan (Dev Patel), a
25-year-old shipping clerk and self-taught genius, who failed
out of college due to his near-obsessive, solitary study of
mathematics. Determined to pursue his passion despite
rejection and derision from his peers, Ramanujan writes
a letter to G. H. Hardy (Jeremy Irons), an eminent British
mathematics professor at Trinity College, Cambridge. Hardy
recognizes the originality and brilliance of Ramanujan’s raw
talent and despite the skepticism of his colleagues, undertakes
bringing him to Cambridge so that his theories can be explored.

Our Little Sister (PG)
Miles Davis was one of the most important and influential
jazz musicians of the 20th century. Adored by jazz and rock
fans alike, he revolutionised jazz music with his seminal
albums Bitches Brew and Kind of Blue. Acclaimed actor Don
Cheadle (Iron Man 3, Ocean’s 11) directs and start as the
self-destructive Davis in this illuminating biopic of a musician
that the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame called “one of the key
figures in the history of jazz”.
Based on the award-winning manga series Umimachi
Diary, & Nominated for the Palme d’Or. Three sisters
Sachi, Yoshino and Chika live together in a large house in
the city of Kamakura. When their father absent from the
family home for the last 15 years dies, they travel to the
countryside for his funeral and meet their shy teenage
half-sister. Bonding quickly with the orphaned Suzu, they
invite her to live with them. Suzu eagerly agrees, and a
new life of joyful discovery begins for the four siblings.

Some of today’s most influential musicians explore
themes of migration through darkly atmospheric
songs set within a world of breathtaking stop-motion
animation.
Award-winning composer and Lau’s visionary accordionist
Martin Green brings together Portishead’s Adrian Utley,
Mogwai’s Dominic Aitchison and Becky Unthank from The
Unthanks, with BAFTA-winning animators whiterobot (Will
Anderson and Ainslie Henderson) for this extraordinary
live show. Flit is inspired by first-hand stories of human
migration, some heart-warming, others heartbreaking
and features songs and original music by Green with
lyrics from Karine Polwart, Anaïs Mitchell, Sandy Wright
and Aidan Moffat. Set within a captivating animated
world and a haunting sonic landscape, these exquisite
songs are performed by a world class band fronted by
the inimitable voices of Becky Unthank and Adam Holmes.
Produced by Lepus Productions. Co-commissioned by
Edinburgh International Festival, Barbican Centre and
Sage Gateshead. Co-produced by Opera North Projects.

SUMMER DANCE
INTENSIVE
Shetland Arts’ week-long Summer Dance Intensive will give participants the
opportunity to explore a range of dance skills with Shetland-born dancer and
choreographer Kathryn Spence, while developing confidence, encouraging creativity.
The week will culminate in a brand new performance for friends and family, and the
chance to perform at the Just Dance celebration on Saturday 16th July.
Sessions run from 10am – 5pm starting the Monday, running daily through to the
Friday. The sessions will be very active, so participants should wear clothes that they
can move comfortably in.

Scottish born, but now Los Angeles based, songstress
KT Tunstall is set to play Mareel as part of an upcoming
Highlands & Islands tour promoted through Ullapool
based ‘Beyond Presents’.
The diminutive but powerful / hard-hitting singersongwriter behind hugely successful albums such as
‘Eye to the Telescope’, ‘Tiger Suit’ and most recently
‘Invisible Empire / Crescent Moon’ – not to mention charttopping singles such as ‘Black Horse & the Cherry Tree’
and ‘Suddenly I See’ - will bring her band to Shetland on
the 23rd August as part of a wider tour to promote her
upcoming new album, due for release later this year.
BRIT and Ivor Novello Award winning Tunstall – who in
the past has also been nominated for both a GRAMMY
and the Mercury Music Prize - has also had her music
featured prominently in film and television show including
‘The Devil Wears Prada’, ‘Ugly Betty’ and Grey’s Anatomy.

To coincide with his exhibition Elemental at
Bonhoga (30 July – 11 Sept), Peter Davis will be
leading a watercolour workshop for bairns aged
8+. After a guided tour of his exhibition, Peter
will introduce basic watercolour techniques and
get everybody painting, either in the gallery or
outside (weather dependent).
To coincide with his exhibition Elemental at
Bonhoga (30 July – 11 Sept), Peter Davis will be
leading a workshop in experimental watercolour.
This is a great opportunity, aimed at those who
already have experience of the medium, to learn
new techniques and push boundaries.
4 hour workshop, with a break for lunch (not
provided).
Please bring your own materials/equipment for
this workshop.
2 hour workshop, no experience required. All
materials provided.
As this may take place outside please come
equipped with suitable clothing.
Please note: if the workshop takes place inside,
the exhibition will be closed to the public for the
duration of the workshop.
