Our Mission
Mariners Inn serves as an anchor for those struggling to
navigate the treacherous waters of homelessness and
substance abuse through a wide range of social service
programs that achieve the best possible outcomes for
adults, families, and youth affected by addiction.

Poised, Positioned, Possibilities – I can’t help but think that these are the most appropriate and relevant words to
describe the activities of 2014:
Poised, because we exhibited the type of steadfast stability that ensured quality services were provided to
people in need;
Positioned, because we have maintained a sixty year history of offering those quality services in our current location;
and
To Our Supporters
Possibilities, because of our uncompromising belief that recovery is real - as evidenced by the success stories
found in this report.
We are happy to report that we made the successful transition from the Institute of Population Health
(IPH – City of Detroit) to the Detroit Wayne Mental Health Authority (DWMHA – Wayne County),
which resulted in a consistent 90-100% consumer capacity for Mariners Inn. In the tone of being in a poised position
for success, we have also successfully implemented electronic health records to enhance excellent service delivery.
It is because of our innovative approach to treatment and recovery, our success in returning men to the community
as clean and sober productive citizens, and our stellar reputation that Mariners Inn has been able to provide quality
behavioral health services for ninety years.
The tireless ambassadorship, guidance, support, and leadership of our governing body strengthens our mission. The
compassion, expertise, and professionalism of our staff are immeasurable. Our loyal supporters and committed
stakeholders keep us grounded and appreciative of their altruism.

About Mariners Inn
History
Accreditations
Mariners Inn was founded in 1925 as a shelter for
Great Lakes sailors and homeless men in the basement
of Mariners Church, and has been providing substance
abuse treatment to homeless men since 1955.
Our treatment program is certified by the
Commission for the Accreditation of
Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF)
at the most prestigious
three-year level.
We are also licensed to provide
residential, outpatient, and integrated treatment by
the Michigan Department of
Community Health.

Clay
Success Within
Clay has been a resident of Mariners Inn’s Extended Residency
since March 2012. As the most senior member of the current
residents, he has seen and been part of the many changes that
have occurred in the housing program in that time.
In the beginning of Clay’s stay, behavioral changes in his recovery
process were not a priority. His willingness to help and be
positive to others was almost nonexistent. With continued time in
recovery, the changes in Clay’s life have been significant. Not only
has he remained drug free - he has constantly encouraged his
fellow residents in their own personal journeys of recovery. He
has upheld the integrity of the program and has represented the
mission of Mariners Inn.
Clay has recently dealt with many medical challenges that have
required multiple surgeries and extended hospital stays. Now that
his health has improved, he is in the process of locating a
permanent place of residence. He has stated that he will make
it a priority to remain active and connected with Mariners Inn
through the alumni program to remain on the right path, as well
as to assist other men in recovery at Mariners Inn.
Christopher
Chris came to Mariners Inn with an array of different issues - his
alcohol and drug use had spiraled out of control and he had no
place to live. Chris had resorted to selling drugs to support his
expensive habits; the criminal behavior had gotten so out of
control that Chris realized he needed to change his life.
Chris entered our program in April 2014; from the beginning, he
was very engaged in the process of recovery. In July 2014, Chris
completed treatment and went on to our transitional housing
program where he began working for The Professional Group. He
has now worked for over a year as a custodian cleaning offices in
downtown Detroit.
Chris recently acquired his own apartment on the west side of
Detroit and received a promotion at work. Chris is doing very well
for himself and has been in recovery for almost 18 months. Chris
states that his time at Mariners Inn taught him how to be a man,
how to take care of himself, how to take life more seriously, and how
to fully take on all the opportunities life has in store.
