Seniors in Transi+on-‐ an Outreach Ministry of Health Ministries of Sonoma County “Old age ain’t no place for sissies.” –BeBe Davis Many of you are familiar with the Seniors in Transi+on (SIT) program which had a debut here at Faith Lutheran a few years back. If not, in brief, this program was started in 2007 by the Health Ministry team at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, in response to the needs of their Seniors who were searching for resources as they faced the reality that a +me could come when they could no longer live independently. SIT is a course designed to help Seniors explore their op+ons for resources in a suppor+ve, small group seRng. With a facilitator to guide the mee+ngs, par+cipants are able to share their hopes and challenges, tour Senior Communi+es and hear speakers address the topics of concern to the group. The ini+al sessions clearly met a need, so Bethlehem decided to reach out to other congrega+ons as well to share this program. Today, the Seniors in Transi+on program is led by Health Ministries of Sonoma County, which is a team of individuals from Lutheran Churches throughout Sonoma County. The program is copyrighted and is being shared throughout the country as churches learn about it through our Na+onal Health Ministry Associa+on, publicity from Wheatridge, Interfaith Alliance and word of mouth. Addi+onally, in February we had the opportunity to present the program to a Lutheran Social Services conference in Livermore, which sparked a lot of interest. Although we are led by Lutherans, this program is ecumenical and has been offered at Episcopalian and Methodist churches as well as to Lutherans. We have received grant funding from Wheatridge, Darby BeBs Episcopalian Communi+es and the Bethlehem Founda+on. These grants have allowed us to hire a Coordinator and Facilitators, along with offering training to equip the Facilitators for their role and to ensure consistency and quality of the presenta+ons. In 2015 we have held sessions at three congrega+ons, with a fourth scheduled for September. Another four congrega+ons have expressed interest, but no dates have been confirmed. The feedback has been overwhelmingly posi+ve with indica+ons from some churches that they would like to host addi+onal SIT programs. Pastors from each congrega+on are involved and present a session on Spirituality, designed with their members in mind. We are planning to offer addi+onal SIT programs throughout Sonoma County in 2016/2017. Transi+ons may not be avoidable, but planning in advance lets you have a say in your future. Is it +me for Faith Lutheran to consider another program, perhaps in conjunc+on with Thanksgiving Lutheran or some other congrega+on? Please let me know if you have any interest or ques+ons. A Reading From John 6:35
Jesus said to them, "I am the bread of life; he who comes to me shall not hunger, and he who believes in me shall never thirst.” Then the Jews began to complain about him because he said, "I am the bread that came down from heaven." They were saying, "Is not this Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? How can he now say, ‘I have come down from heaven?’" Jesus answered them, "Do not complain among yourselves. No one can come to me unless drawn by the Father who sent me; and I will raise that person up on the last day. It is written in the proph-‐
ets, And they shall all be taught by God. Everyone who has heard and learned from the Father comes to me. Not that anyone has seen the Father except the one who is from God; he has seen the Father. Very truly, I tell you, whoever believes has eternal life. I am the bread of life. your ancestors ate the manna in the wilderness, and they died. This is the bread that comes down from heaven, so that one may eat of it and not die. I am the living bread that came down from heaven. Whoever eats of this bread will live forever; and the bread that I will give for the life of the world is my [lesh." Did you know? This
