Well, we made it through another Holiday Season
with all the hoopla that goes with it. Every year, after
the holidays, it seems like a let down. The cold weather, the sleet and snow, and cancelled events because of
the weather create this let down feeling. Then comes
the LAFASNY Ladies with their monthly birthday
party, or the LAHVVFA ladies who create such events
as trips to various fire stations for everything from a
breakfast to spaghetti or roast beef dinners, or the
(Greene) County ladies who hold horse races or bingo
or just a ―plain old party‖. We could never forget the
Catskill Fire Company which holds a ―Shuffle Board
Tournament‖ against the Home Residents during the
month of February. The biggest ―problem‖ with this
event is that ―Mother Nature‖ just loves to interfere
with the scheduling. This year she really butted into
the schedule with her scheduling snow or freezing rain
storms for many of the Friday nights we were scheduled (to beat them). However this creates another feature in that we get to carry over the missed games into
March; so we still get to have all the ―parties‖. I want
to express my thanks to all the people who spend their
time either coming over to Hudson or opening their
firehouse to me (us) for these events, To those people
not singled out, and those who are, I really enjoy myself—THANK YOU!!!
I still managed to sneak in on a few of ―Mama’s
Kitchen‖ and ―Fireside Bakery‖ events to make sure
that the foods are still edible and tasty, as well as other
events that are regularly scheduled at the Home. But , I
still enjoy getting out of here for a few hours.
On a somewhat sadder note, as of March 13, 2011,
have lost our new Home Administrator, Mr. David
Lovelace, has only been here as our administrator for a
short period of time, but we all have grown very attached to him. He was offered a job a lot closer to his
home, so I guess we cannot blame him for leaving. I
am sorry to see him leave.

The Hillcrest Fire Company No. 1 hosted the Royal Order of
the Blue Vests meeting on January 23, 2011. The meeting
was held in the Mt. Ivy Fire Company No. 2 station.
The registration started at 11:30 AM with many members
arriving earlier. President Pettingell and the Board of Directors decided that due to the cold temperature, the long travel
time home for many of the Blue Vests members, and the
pending football game that the meeting started at 12:30 PM.
President Pettingell opened the business meeting at 12:30
PM. The Pledge of Allegiance was made and followed by a
moment of silence for our departed members. Assistant Chief
Lloyd Hovelman and President Frank Youngman of the Hillcrest Fire Company No. 1 welcomed all in attendance and
invited the membership to partake of the refreshments after
the conclusion of the meeting. The Committee reports included the Royal Order of the Blue Vests Annual Christmas
Home Day Program (Dec. 18), the March meeting that will
be hosted by the Brewster Fire Department (March 13), the
Annual Elections & Picnic meeting that will be hosted by the
Hurleyville Fire Company No. 1 (May 21), and the Annual
Steak Roast outing that will be hosted by the VFW Post in
Queensbury (June 16). President Pettingell thanked the Committees for their reports and especially Jim Coons, George
Harp, and George Hill for their many years serving on the
Christmas Home Day. Fin.Sec./Treas., George H. Hill, reminded everyone that he has started collecting the 2011 Annual Dues. Please pay your dues promptly.
Under New Business, William C. Rosenhagen gave a brief report
on the Firemen’s Home and thanked the Royal Order of the Blue
Vests for their continued support. Billy mentioned that the new
Firemen’s Home Administrator is Mr. David Lovelace. Past President, Joseph O. Garcia announced that he is stepping down and that
this is his last month for coordinating the selling of the raffle tickets.
Joe will work with the new coordinator. President Pettingell asked
for a volunteer coordinator. After a slight pause, George Hill stated
that he will find a volunteer. Joseph O. Garcia was the coordinator
for many years and his leadership & guidance will be missed. President Pettingell appointed three members to the Audit Committee.
Fin. Sec./Treas., George H. Hill, reminded the Audit Committee
that the audit will be starting at 11:00 AM in Brewster and to please
be on time.
President Pettingell then called for the drawing of the winning
50/50 ticket. The winning (and very lucky) member this meeting
was Mike Cesare. President Pettingell reminded the membership
that the March meeting is for the nomination of the new Chair Officers. President Pettingell announced that the Hudson Valley 29th
Annual Ken Merriman Fire Police Seminar will be hosted by the
West Clinton Fire Company No. 1 in Dutchess County on April 9,
2011.
Refreshments were available before and after the meeting. Everyone was welcome and the refreshments were delicious. A special
Thank You goes to the members of the Hillcrest Fire Company No.
1 and to the Mt. Ivy Fire Company No. 2 for hosting the January
meeting, for their wonderful hospitality, and for the great refreshments.
Chaplain Emeritus S. Del Goldsmith, Putnam County's
oldest volunteer firefighter, answered his last alarm late

MESSAGE FROM THE EDITOR:
Dear Readers:
I must start with an apology for the errors in the last edition. My fault, I take the blame. It seems that both my computers caught a ―bug‖ - probably via some emails; then I
goofed up and tried to proof read the paper myself. I know
better, one cannot proof read the material he or she writes (or
types). The consequence is that the copy went to the printer
about two and a half weeks late and I missed our appointment
and had to be slotted in at the printers open time.
A problem was brought to my attention regarding wrong
information being printed in this newsletter. Please DON’T
ASSUME that I am aware of such items as new chairpersons
or better yet, that you moved or changed your address and or
phone number. Please let me know via email. Chances are
that if you give me a piece of paper at a meeting—or on the
street—you might as well not tell me at all. Papers get lost in
the shuffle. Here it is, almost time to elect a new president,
which may mean new committee members or chairs, and I
still don’t have a directory for the current year. I do have a
committee list, but no addresses or phone numbers. This
problem occurs almost every year and probably can’t be
helped.
Well we’ve made it through the holiday season and into
winter. I wonder which is (was) worse. The lead-up to Christmas and New Years can be tedious and stressful; then we
should look at winter. I cannot believe the number of snow
storms we’ve had this year—and the amount of snow accumulated. At least we did not get as much as the Syracuse
area.
By the time you read this it will be past St. Patrick’s Day
and we’ll be slowly passing Easter. Before you know it,
SUMMER will be upon us. With summer, we will see a glut
of fire conventions around the state. For those who only attend their local or sectional convention, you may really like
to attend a different sectional’s convention meetings; they are
usually somewhat enlightening to see the differences in
thinking around the different areas of the state.
Just a reminder, the residents at the Firemen’s Home really
enjoy the visits from the sectionals and counties and the individual fire companies and or auxiliaries. They also enjoy the
individual visit for one on one companionship. You might be
there some day, wouldn’t you enjoy the company?

Albany county reports
By Albany county v.p.
Kathie wood
Hopefully Spring is really on its way. It seems it has been a
long winter which tends to lead to more incidents that the
departments have to respond to.
On February 17, 2011, the Albany County Burn Fund made
a presentation to a family which had a total lost of their home
and belongings. The tragic lost of property occurred in the
Coeymans Hollow Fire Department district on January 22,
2011. The Mullin-Ducatte family was in Bativia New York
during the fire. The home was fully engulfed when the Coeymans Hollow Fire Dept. arrived and it was considered a total
loss and the family lost everything. The family has five children ages 16,14,12,7 and 5. Air temperatures that night were
at or below 0. Selkirk, New Baltimore, Onesquathaw, and
Medway were called for mutual aid. Also Medway and
Westerlo were cover companies for Coeymans Hollow. Coeymans Hollow Chief Bill Kapusta made a formal
letter of request for a Albany County Burn donation. He had
requested it for the Mullin-Ducatte family of Coeymans Hollow. Members of the Albany County Burn Fund in attendance were Chair Tom With, Treasurer Mike Cesare, and Fred
Pettingell.
From the left is:

President Darlene Wilson,

Chair Tom With, Jeanne
Mullin-Ducatte, and Chief
Bill Kapusta
The Albany County burn fund is available to any family that
has had a fire in the county. The Chiefs just need to write a
letter and send it to the Chair of the Committee Tom With.
On a much happier note the Shaker Road Loudonville FD has purchased two new Fire Rescue Engines from KME. They were put in
service the beginning of March. These Rescue Engines replaced two
engines and a
rescue apparatus.
Both new engines
will carry the
same rescue tools
needed for rescue
company operations which are
done by the department

PRESIDENTIAL OFFICERS WORDS:
Vincent Galvin
President
January has passed, the cold and snow seems to be persistent
without ever ending. As it looks now February was no charm
either. So as the months go by we are hoping for warmer and
drier weather. On another note we had a great Past President’s
dinner for Don Farrell with over three hundred in attendance.
We also had our quarterly meeting and another in the books
has ended. One of the great events was we were able finally to
see the OCC Chopper. The bike was on display for all to see
and a great bike it is. We are depending on all members to
help and sell these tickets so we can get a great return. The
HVVFA cannot depend on the Internet alone to sell those tickets. Please see your County VP for tickets each VP has tickets
for everyone who can sell them. In addition this will be our
second year with the promoter in Lake George and as a group
we must think what we will do next year as far as who is going to do it and where we will go. The HVVFA will be accepting bids for promoter for the 2012 Convention & Parade. So
far the promoter plan has worked and I guess we will stay the
route until a fire department decides that they will host it. Another great project that we will work on is trying to come up
with a design and purchase of a stained glass window for the
Firemen’s Home. Tom McKinney will head this committee
and hopefully by the spring meeting we will have an idea
what it will look like. So until then we will see you in April
and remember to move those tickets.
Delbe Spath,
1st Vice President
I hope everybody had a wonderful holiday. With all this
snow we’re having every other day, spring will sure look
good. The past presidents’ dinner was held with a lot of
guests and a good time was had by all. It was also the kick off
for our raffle on the Chopper’s Motorcycle. All the county
vice presidents and directors have tickets and we will need all
our member to push the tickets, see your county vice president
or a HVVFA director to get tickets to sell. You can go on our
web site and buy tickets at HVVFA.com.
April 10th meeting is at Dan Leghorn Fire Company in the
town of Newburgh on Rt. 52, there will be a open house at
Orange County Choppers for a tour at their store on Rt. 17K
for anyone interested in going before the meeting.
The convention is in Lake George again this year and convention headquarters is at Fort Wm. Henry.. Letters have been
sent out for the ad book and invitation for the Mardi Gras parade and Dress parade. Both parades will end at the Fort Wm.
Henry with trophies given out there also. If you would like a
room there please tell them that you are with the Hudson Valley Firemen’s Assn.
If anyone is interested in becoming a committee member
please send me your resume.
