Planning Your Day: Use Our Learning Neighborhoods
Take a few moments to review the program and find out about events most interesting to
you.To make navigating the university a bit easier, we’ve divided our campus into Learning
Neighborhoods (see map, pages 8–9). Although all of the neighborhoods connect you to
our past, present and future, we’ve done our best to consolidate events by areas of interest.
Enjoy getting to know more about the University of Maryland!

terp town center
In the center of it all is MCKeldin Mall, home to the university’s oldest library and
the Omicron Delta Kappa Fountain. The mall is also where the original Testudo, dedicated
in 1933, makes his home. At Terp Town Center, you can learn more fun facts about the
university and its colleges, catch live performances hourly and chow down on anything
from pizza to crab cakes.
sports & rec row
If you’re looking for a challenge, head on over to Sports & Rec Row.This area is
home to Byrd Stadium, the Campus Rec Center, Cole Field House and Comcast Center.
Today, our athletes are always in the spotlight, but the university’s athletic teams didn’t get
off to such a hot start. The first football team went 0–3 in 1892. Since then, we’ve accumulated 37 national championships. Head here if you want to meet some of our best and
brightest or try a new sport yourself.
Maryland Day has something for
everyone to experience and explore:
From workshops, hands-on research
demonstrations and the Annual Red &
White Spring Football Game to live music
and dance performances, tours, lectures, petting zoos and autograph sessions. There’s a
good chance you’ll learn something new
and have a great time. Inside, you’ll find
activities spanning a range of interests that
are ideal for visitors of all ages.
Alumni Welcome back! See all the ways
we have grown.Visit with fellow alumni
at the Samuel Riggs IV Alumni Center,
a beautiful new home for all Maryland
graduates. Stop by events hosted by individual
colleges and schools, and check out some of
the ways campus has changed since you
were here last.Tour proud additions like the
Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center and
Comcast Center. All alumni events are
marked by this symbol. M
Bring your family and stay for the day.
Come to the Kids Carnival at the Stamp
Student Union, stay for lunch, listen to
great music and be sure to sample our
famous ice cream! Check out all the events
especially for kids: face painting, finger
painting, insect petting zoo, sports games at
the Campus Rec Center and Ag Day.

Students, Faculty and Staff Bring
your friends and family and show them why
we are so proud of our world-class university.
science & tech way
Physics, biology, engineering, chemistry, mathematics and more collide in this neighborhood. The area is home to the historic Glenn L. Martin Wind Tunnel and the shiny new
Kim Engineering Building. Governmental and private researchers call on faculty and staff
there for insight and innovative ideas.Today is your chance to join them in experiments,
view their exhibits and pick their brains.
biz & society hill
Biz & Society Hill is home to activities highlighting the university’s architecture,
business, journalism, public affairs, and social sciences programs. The College of Behavioral
and Social Sciences didn’t exist until 1986, but 20 years later it is home to the university’s
most popular majors.Their experts will test your hearing or teach you about the developing world, or you can mosey on over to witness a mock trial or try your hand at spin art.
ag day avenue
Ag Day celebrations have been a University of Maryland staple since 1924.
Established as Maryland Agricultural College in 1856, our land-grant mission was to teach
young men new farming techniques.Today, students in the College of Agriculture and
Natural Resources research food safety and nutrition as well as diseases affecting animals
and humans. Stop by, spend some time with the campus farm animals and learn more about
our work on modern frontiers.
arts alley
If visual or performing arts is your thing, make Arts Alley your first stop. The university’s rich musical history began in 1859 with the Cadet Corps Drum and Buglers, while
students formed the first theater group, known as The Players, in 1919.Today, artists of all
types are showcased at the modern Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center, where you can
catch musical recitals, dance ensembles and theater games.
