Dear Friends and Patrons,
Welcome and thank you for joining us as we celebrate 26
years of showcasing fabulous Upper Arlington kitchens on
the Kitchen Kapers Tour. Since our inception in 1987, Kitchen
Kapers has been committed to raising funds to support
Cancer Services at Riverside Methodist Hospital. To date, we
have proudly raised close to half a million dollars, in which
many special projects and programs have benefited from.
Proceeds from this year’s tour will continue to support the
Artist in Residence program, which is recognized as a Best
Practice by the National Endowment for the Arts. Please read more about it on the
following pages.
Our sincere gratitude goes to our fantastic homeowners who graciously opened
their doors to us, our Tour Sponsor, Home Sponsors and numerous generous
community partners and donors. Most importantly, the biggest thanks goes to our
amazing membership, who volunteer their time and talents to ensure our tour is a
success.
We hope that your experience on the Kitchen Kapers Tour is inspiring and that you
leave the event with new, creative ideas and local contacts to help transform your
living space. We also hope you enjoy the culinary treats and vibrant floral displays
and keep those partners in mind for your next social gathering.
Again, thank you for supporting us as we continue our goal of making a difference
in the lives of cancer patients at OhioHealth Riverside Methodist Hospital.
Enjoy!

Benefiting Riverside Methodist Hospital
Dear Kitchen Kapers Volunteers and Friends,
On behalf of the entire Cancer Services team at OhioHealth Riverside Methodist
Hospital, I would like to thank you for your dedication and support of our cancer
care for patients in our community. Your devotion to philanthropy is remarkable.
For the past few years you have supported a very important service for Riverside
Methodist Hospital’s Cancer Care, namely, “Artists in Residence”. As part of our
integrative care program, these special artists deliver healing and compassion to
our patients, mitigating the side effects of treatment and easing their pain and
anxiety as they experience the traditional methods of cancer care.
“Artists in Residence” is an example of our desire to deliver a differentiated patient
experience through compassionate care and superior customer service. We
continue to strive to be experts at treating people with cancer, not just the cancer.
This is only possible with philanthropic support such as yours.
Thank you for your continued dedication of time and resources to programs that
support our commitment to providing extraordinary cancer care at Riverside
Methodist Hospital.
Respectfully and gratefully,
Jeffrey G. Bell, M.D.

OhioHealth Riverside Methodist Hospital Cancer Services:
Artist in Residence Program
Where do the Arts fit into healthcare? Right at the bedside! At Riverside Methodist Hospital
Cancer Services, you’ll find professional artists employed to work with patients. Providing
an emotional respite during treatment, the Arts have the ability to move beyond or beneath
words where healing can begin.
Bringing a voice to the essence of life through music can be a comfort. John Morgan,
artist in residence, provides a musical pause from stress, a bridge to focus on the joy and
celebration of each moment. A melody can imbue the mind with moments of relaxation.
Fiber Artist and patient Maryann reminds us, “The work is what counts: do it no matter what.
It is an exercise in courage: start cold/blind in the dark, yield to a vague impulse or inkling:
trust the cut into something whole and beautiful: risk its destruction, loss of integrity, in
order to find hope.”
Solely funded by philanthropic support, the Artist in Residence program provides priceless
interactions. A young mother can sing lullabies to her sleeping babe; an elderly man can
think of years gone by within a music genre. The only program in central Ohio, recognized
by the National Endowment for the Arts as a Best Practice, our Artist In Residence program
helps grow an international movement, infusing the full spectrum of Arts into healthcare.
At Riverside Cancer Services, we believe in treating the whole person and not just the
disease. Your philanthropic support provides a welcome respite for patients and families
experiencing fear or worry. Your donation instantly changes a perspective. Thank you!

Caring for Cancer Since 1987
Welcome to 2238 Yorkshire Road, home of Matt and Heather Evans, and their two
children. Originally built in 1931, Matt and Heather purchased the home in 2006, with
the vision of eventually transforming the home into what it is today.
The Evans' completed a large renovation in 2012 that included expansion of the kitchen
and addition of a powder room, butler's pantry, home office and mudroom on the first
floor. The second floor renovation included two bathroom remodels and the addition
of a master bedroom, master bathroom, and laundry. They also chose to finish the
basement and add a new half bath as well. To create this masterpiece, they hired
Rex General Contracting and the interior design service of Amy Shaw Designs. The
comfortable elegance of this lovely home is evident the moment you enter. The decor
and finishes were designed to create a very soothing environment.
Architect Gary Alexander designed this beautiful, open layout of the kitchen area and
Menno Yoder of Village Woodworking completed the gorgeous woodwork. This new
wonderful layout allows for entertaining large extended family dinners, and for the
immediate family to enjoy their time at home together. Even the family dog, Scarlet,
was considered during the planning and rewarded her own nook in the kitchen. The
polished granite and honed marble are in Verde Peacock and Colorado Gold Vein, both
from IGM and installed by Modlich Stoneworks. The stunning Candalara Glacier Mist
glass tile work adds beautiful texture and coolness to the space. The custom cabinets
from Village Woodworking feature pewter hardware finishes. Favret Heating & Cooling
performed the HVAC work.
Cooking is enjoyable and easy thanks to the appliance selections, which include a 48"
range, ventilation hood, 48'' refrigerator and freezer, and dishwasher, all by Thermador.
The kitchen also houses a second dishwasher by Bosch, GE built-in microwave, Kitchen
Aid icemaker, and Uline beverage fridge. All appliances were purchased from Ferguson.
The kitchen features unique lighting including an antiqued channel sconce at the wet
bar and indigo hued chandeliers by Cyan. Northern Lighting supplied the remaining
lighting, other than the antique chandeliers in the dining room and office
The Evans' paid great attention to detail in making sure that old blended well with new,
and that the renovation was done in keeping with the original charm and character
of the house. Since its completion, the Evans' have enjoyed entertaining and hosting
dinners, both large and intimate, for friends and family. They enjoy family friendly
cooking and also strive to push their culinary boundaries experimenting with new foods
and cultures. The superior design and features of their kitchen make all of this possible.
Make sure to stop and see this spectacular home!

Caring for Cancer Since 1987
Welcome to 1919 Cambridge Boulevard, one of the first houses to be built in Upper
Arlington in 1915. This Georgian Revival style house was the home of developer Ben
Thompson, brother and partner to King Thompson. The Thompson brothers set the
tone for the architecture they envisioned for Upper Arlington. From the bottom up this
home is filled with history and tradition. The basement joists were taken from the first
Deshler Hotel in Columbus and the original slate roof is still in place with three dormers
letting light into the third floor ballroom.
This beautiful home, noteworthy for its symmetry and classical features, is now owned
by Claire and Matt Hamilton and was newly renovated in 2006. They did a remarkable
job of maintaining the home’s symmetry by adding two gabled wings. Much care was
taken to match existing details on the interior and exterior of the home - all added
without disturbing the original portion of the home.
The grand entrance foyer contains the main carved birch staircase that leads to the
second and third floors. Birch was also used for the 2 fireplace mantels as well as the
door and window trim throughout. As you make your way through the Hamilton home,
you will notice their unique art collection and decor style of integrating old and new
pieces together, exemplifying their personalities and individual style. When framing the
art collection, Claire worked with several framing studios including Reed Art.
One of the main focuses of the home is the large welcoming kitchen that opens to their
family room, with built-in bookcases, massive limestone fireplace and French doors
leading to the landscaped courtyard. The couple wanted to maintain the character and
integrity of the home while also accommodating their lifestyle which includes casual
and formal entertaining for anywhere from 2 to 350 guests. This was achieved through
a new larger kitchen space that allows for more comfortable entertaining, which Claire
enjoys doing at least once a season.
Behal, Sampson, Deitz (BSD) and Interiorworks by Sally McDonald brought this new
"scullery" style kitchen to life. The plans emphasized keeping the casual functional feel
of the original maids' kitchen. The old kitchen now serves as their mudroom and still
has the original servant clock. One example of this family balancing fun and formal in
this historic home is through the hand written messages and memories all over the
back stair case walls and ceiling. Claire shared this tradition from her childhood with her
2 children, Bobby and Monnet.
The kitchen features poplar flush inset flat paneled cabinetry by DL Atkinson with
chrome hardware that was matched from the home’s original kitchen. Absolute black
granite countertops by Chester A. Smith Marble and Granite, Inc. run around the
perimeter of the kitchen with a backsplash of hand-molded subway tile provided by
Hamilton-Parker. Your eyes are drawn to the long mahogany butcher block island in the
center of the room with 2 unique pendant lights hanging above. Another unique piece
is the range hood designed specifically for this home by BSD. Finally, the kitchen was
painted in a faux finish.
You'll want to spend some time taking in all the details throughout this beautiful home
filled with history, tradition, whimsy and charm.

Caring for Cancer Since 1987
Welcome to 1795 Arlington Avenue, the beautiful home of The Lynch Family. Originally
built in the 1930s, Cindy and Neil purchased the home in 2008. The Cipriano Family built
this stately home during the depression and lived in the home for over 30 years. The
husband worked for the Italian Consulate and hired Italian workers to build the house.
The fireplace in the living room was brought over from Florence.
Cindy and Neil enjoy living in their home with their two children, Emily and Bobby, and
their two dogs Gracie and Teddy. They have continued to maintain the integrity of this
historic home while venturing into a few renovations including redesigning the kitchen
in 2013.
Cindy Lynch solely designed her new kitchen to accommodate both her and her
daughter’s love for cooking and entertaining. With the help of C. Roy Homes and Menno
Yoder of Village Woodworking, they have created a traditional kitchen design with a
contemporary flare. The kitchen is a beautiful grayish green color with white carrara
marble backsplash accented with crystal tiles provided by Classico Tile and Marble. The
wallpaper has a faint fleur de le print by Kenneth James wallpaper. Dark hardwood
floors help to showcase the full overlay maple cabinets with flat panel doors painted
grey and designed by Menno Yoder of Village Woodworking. Polished chrome knobs
and pulls bring all of the cabinetry together in splendid balance. Absolute black honed
granite, purchased at Marble and Granite Works, is used for the extra large island that
is often filled with many of the Lynch children’s friends. Appliances include a sub-zero
refrigerator, a KitchenAid dishwasher, microwave and vent hood, a Uline beverage
refrigerator and a Jenn-Air dual fuel range.
The Lynch Family kitchen is a dichotomy of elegancy and casual living. It is truly a
beautiful remodel that will be enjoyed by family and friends for years to come.

Caring for Cancer Since 1987
Welcome to 1920 Edgemont Road, the lovely home of Christy and David Zadnik and their
three sons. This home, originally built in 1929, has been the Zadnik’s home for 9 years. Aside
from the kitchen, they have remodeled several areas of the house including the master
bedroom, first floor powder room and basement.
In 2009, with the help of interior designer, Wendy Starr, and general contractor, Scott
Swanger, from Westwood Cabinetry and Millwork, the Zadniks set out to create the perfect
kitchen space. The interior renovation began with the removal of a wall to open the kitchen
up to a sitting area. The most eye-catching feature of this kitchen is the gorgeous custom
craftsmanship. The custom cabinetries were designed with unique and original details by
Scott and then handmade in the Westwood shop. The blue-gray finish with brown glaze over
top offers a timeless and eclectic style. The leather honed black granite counter top on the
center island compliments the Carrera marble on the perimeter cabinets.
The existing floors were stained a dark chocolate brown. In addition, an espresso finish was
added to the wood trim and this color scheme is carried throughout the house. An extra
space off of the kitchen includes matching espresso wooden lockers for extra storage. A dark
espresso wooden Sub Zero refrigerator and freezer is another beautiful piece of art designed
and built by Westwood. Other appliances include a Sharp drawer microwave and Wolf range.
Christy was raised in the restaurant business and grew up watching her parents entertain
family, friends and customers. Decades later she is still in the restaurant business and now
shares Carsonie’s (her maiden name) Pizza and Stromboli Kitchen on Lane Avenue with her
husband. Much like their bustling restaurant, the Zadnik’s dining room is more than capable
to seat and satisfy many hungry guests.
Please stop by and see this amazing home!

The Matrka Home
1923 Berkshire Road

Caring for Cancer Since 1987
Welcome to 1923 Berkshire Road, the contemporary home of Paul Matrka. Built in 1948,
the home was purchased by the Matrkas in 2010 at which time the home underwent an
extensive renovation inside and out.
Paul knew exactly who to turn to for help with this project, his brother, Michael Matrka.
Michael Matrka, Inc. not only helped with the construction but the design as well. They
fabulously blended traditional Upper Arlington character with contemporary styling to
create a magazine worthy home on the inside with fabulous curb appeal on the outside.
Before entering the home, you are greeted by a visually appealing landscape and
structure. Even though the homeowners added substantial square footage and
created a more contemporary design, the home blends nicely with the south of Lane
neighborhood. They moved the garage to the back of the lot and buried all of the utility
lines so the focus is on the home and landscape only. The home’s clean lines and large
and numerous windows greet visitors as they approach.
The inside of the home offers a contemporary and flowing layout with clean crisp lines
making it a welcome place for entertaining small and large groups. While the first
floor offers numerous indoor gathering spots as well as an outdoor screened porch, the
heart of the home is truly the kitchen. The kitchen serves a functional purpose daily but
offers as an entertainment venue when guests are present.
Paul turned to architect David Keyser with dkd studio and Susan Matrka Interiors for
design inspirations in his kitchen. The end result is contemporary delight. The flat front
custom Natural Finish Wenge cabinets from Cooley Custom Cabinetry are topped by
White Zeus Silestone tops and end panels fabricated and installed by Chester A. Smith
Marble and Granite, Inc. The clean lines of the home continue with the 2” x 4” running
glass backsplash, the Amerock Linear Pull cabinet hardware and the 2 ¼” select white
oak floors. The kitchen is truly designed for entertaining. Two separate Islands add
to the vast counter space topped only by top of the line appliances required for any
chef’s kitchen. The fabulous meals created would not be possible without their Wolf
48” duel fuel range and 54” hood and Sub Zero 36” Refrigerator and Freezer. Guests
can help themselves to cool beverages in their GE Monogram Beverage Refrigerator.
Other appliances and fittings includes Fisher Paykal Dishdrawer dishwasher, Sharpe
Microwave Drawer, Elkay Kitchen and Bar sinks and Blanco faucets. All of the appliances
were purchased at Ferguson.
The fabulous colors, lines and high end finishes of this contemporary home will leave
you wanting to sign up for personal cooking classes in this exquisite kitchen.

Caring for Cancer Since 1987
Welcome to 1173 Millcreek Lane, the beautiful home of Peter and Tiffany Gibson. This
custom, brick Georgian home with traditional French influences looks newly built, yet
it was actually built in 1977 by the President of Lazarus Department Store and his wife,
Mr. and Mrs. William and Viola Giovanello. The Giovanellos utilized only the finest
craftsman, evident in the unique architectural details throughout the home. In turn, the
Gibson’s, who moved into the home in June 2012, have renovated several areas of the
home augmenting its classic beauty with touches of glamour and lovely found objects
such as the intricately carved antique doors that separate the formal living room from
the kitchen and family room.
Upon entering the home you will find a two story open foyer with a lovely winding
staircase. Take notice of the custom trim and moldings throughout the first floor, which
are displayed beautifully against complementary paint colors on both the walls and
ceilings. Peter and Tiffany’s renovations include a newly constructed mudroom off of
their kitchen to accommodate the busy lives of their young son and daughter and the
muddy paws of their Hungarian Vizsla, Sanford. They also renovated a full bathroom
on their first floor. However, the kitchen was the main focus of the renovation. Tiffany
played an integral role in its design and chose Michael Bullock of Danzig Construction
for the renovations.
The kitchen features a color scheme of soft cream and shades of grey, accented by a
light turquoise blue. The tranquil colors, which are offset by dark walnut oak planked
floors, combine well with opulent tile and Art Deco lighting. Tiffany’s desire to invoke
a hint of 1920’s Paris without compromising comfort and function was clearly realized.
Indeed, having functional space was critical in their design plan. Peter has nine siblings
and numerous spouses, nieces, nephews whom they love to entertain. For them,
interior design is all about creating the spaces for together time: spaces that are
comfortable yet energizing, practical yet inspiring.
Upon entering the kitchen, the eye is immediately drawn to a stunning inlay mosaic of
Danse Lucido Glass and Stone Water Jet tile purchased from Classico Tile and Marble.
The surrounding field tile is Pavarotti Pearl Opera Glass, also purchased from Classico
Tile and Marble. The maple cabinetry is painted a soft cream with a pewter glaze and is
paired with knobs of zinc die cast in a brushed nickel finish. The quartzite countertops
are in white macubus. All of these elements are pulled together with coordinating
window treatments in the kitchen and adjoining family room.
The Gibson’s chose a Wolf range; Subzero refrigerator, freezer and beverage refrigerator;
Asko dishwarer and Frigidaire microwave. These will allow them to prepare their
favorite meals of fresh seafood and vegetables for family and friends for years to come.
