Essentially, the linear motion slide consists of two parts, a fixed base and a moving carriage. Rolling elements, balls or rollers provide the interface between base and carriage and perfectly rolls on four surfaces arranged at 90 degree, called guide ways. A built in algorithm counts the incoming pulses from the encoder and compares it with the commanded number of steps to verify the accuracy of movement. For ball crews, 2 mm and 4 mm are the standard pitch in our stages. For lead screws, pitch can be 0.5 mm, 1 mm, and 2 mm. For any standard stage with specified lead screw/ ball screw pitch, resolution can vary depending on the drive electronics. There are micro-step driver cards for the stepper motors having 1/8 to 1/256 micro steps. Brushless DC (BLDC) motors provide better speed and vibration characteristics compared to stepper motors. Feedback can either by rotary encoder fixed to the shaft of the motor or by linear encoder. In the case of linear encoder, absolute accuracy of the stage is independent of the accuracy of the leadscrew. Hence better accuracy of positioning can be expected from linear encoder based stages compared to stages fixed with rotary encoder. Holmarc manufactures LMS-ZZ series stages fixed with either rotary or linear encoders as standard products as described in the table below.
