Cover artwork is titled Lacordaire Landscape 2013, an acrylic on canvas installation made up of 248
individual six by six inch squares arranged together to create the larger work. Each student, faculty member and
administrator was asked to create one square depicting themselves. All of the individual faces come together in a
mountainous landscape that reflects the Academy’s incredibly talented and diverse population.
This work explores identity and portraiture through the metaphor of landscape. Each year the landscape at
the Academy changes. As a community, Lacordaire faces new challenges and reshapes old traditions; the
community says goodbye to students and staff as well as welcomes new students and staff. The Lacordaire
community is constantly in flux, yet also permanent in certain histories and traditions. Just like the landscape of
our world, our community is ever changing. This large installation reflects a snapshot of Lacordaire in 2013.

This year, although filled with major storms and tragedies, the Academy has continued to make
progress in virtually every program. The curriculum remains solid as evidenced by above average
standardized test scores and an impressive list of acceptances with numerous scholarships to eminent
secondary schools, colleges, and universities. Our technology infrastructure has grown and improved;
keeping current remains a challenge. In extracurricular activities, we have retained the traditions of the
past to include: Christmas Concerts, One Acts, Prom, Project Justice, Forensics, Mission Club, and we have
even added a Middle School tennis team this spring to our sports offerings. The Arts Program, both
performing and fine, continues to fill the Academy with actors, actresses, artists, melodic tunes and
treasured works.
Over the past year, the term used many times by former community members, who have been away
from Lacordaire for some time, is transformation. When on the campus, within minutes it is impossible
not to see, hear, and feel the burgeoning of excellence and the spirit of energetic and cheerful adolescence.
Furthermore, as you stroll through the hallways of the Lower, Middle, and Upper Schools, dodge hurried
students, or peer into classrooms, the sense of our faculty’s commitment to growth and development is
readily apparent. How we move about, share teachers, provide oversight of the Lower, Middle and Upper
Schools, and deliver our programs and curriculum is much different now; however, our ideals and
commitment to the Dominican vision remain unchanged!
As we end our 93rd year and begin our 94th year, our future remains bright. Next year we will add
additional sections of Kindergarten, third grade, and possibly seventh grade, and we will welcome 20 new
in-bound students to the Upper School. We are experiencing a good problem-space constraint. Moving
forward will dictate careful thought so as not to place any of our Academy students at a disadvantage due
to program space. Looking forward towards the Academy’s 100th anniversary, we will need to refurbish
much of the Academy’s external and internal physical plant to ensure and secure the Academy’s future.
Our goal is to replace current inefficient systems and structures with clean energy efficient replacements.
The campaign to refurbish a 50 year-old plus campus over the next six years is essential for the Academy’s
future. We will need all of your generosity and expertise where possible.
In this issue of LA Voices, you will read stories about several members of our distinguished faculty,
many of whom were here during your Lacordaire experience. We are grateful for their service and
humbled by their many years of dedication to educating tomorrow’s leaders and professionals.
In closing, at our recent LA Gala, Francesca (Frankie) Ronzitti ’11 spoke to us about her Lacordaire
Upper School experience she shared. “In the end, there is only one important thing I would want you
all to remember and know about this school. And that is…Lacordaire is truly a special place.
Lacordaire touches each and every one of us in a way that just can’t be captured by language. It’s a
feeling that you come to experience as soon as you walk though its doors that says, ‘you belong here;
this is your comfort zone.’ It comes up on you slowly and then engulfs you wrapping you in the
knowledge that Lacordaire is your home, that you will leave here better, smarter, happier, stronger,
and independent. These are the traits that Lacordaire instills in each and every young woman who
crosses its vestibule, traits that last a lifetime and can never be erased.” We deeply appreciate all of the
support we continue to receive from our alums, parents, and friends. Thank you for being part of a special
community, and I hope to see you at some of our upcoming events during our 94th year!
Regards,
Brian F. Morgan

Academy Highlights
by Patricia McGuire
Lacordaire remains an environment where students
grow, become inspired, learn about the world and
develop their dreams. The Academy continues to attract a
diverse and dynamic student body along with supportive
parents, alumni and friends. It is at this time, the end of
the academic year, that we are able to catalog the
Academy’s many accomplishments, recognize what the
Academy has brought to the lives of our students and
plan for the upcoming year. Overall, the Academy
continues to push toward improved curriculum,
enhanced use of technology and elevated faculty training
as prominent initiatives.
Curriculum
Enhancements
Students at Lacordaire Academy pursue excellence
through a challenging curriculum that develops critical
and creative thinking, problem solving, and effective
writing and communication skills. Classroom
instruction provides an opportunity for students to ask
questions, offer ideas and present opinions. Discussionbased learning in higher level courses also prepares
students for the competitive college classroom.
The Academy continues to seek curriculum
improvements which foster a seamless PreK-12 learning
experience and challenges the student. A formal review
process for Upper School testing and curriculum revision
has been initiated. Faculty have been given the results of
the ACT, PSAT and SAT and testing has developed an
academic improvement plan. Questions from recent
PSAT tests were downloaded and distributed to teachers to
target potential weak areas. These areas have been
identified and teaching strategies and lesson plans have
been implemented to launch improvement.
Technology
The Academy continues to integrate new and
advanced technologies into the classroom and the
campus for students, faculty and administrators.
Through nonpublic funding, the Academy received 10
iPad minis for Academy use. In addition, the Academy
has strategically transferred its email system to Google
Ed which will enable teachers, students and parents to
enhance the homework calendars, shared documents
and communication functions. The introduction of a
one-to-one iPad program for seventh through twelfth
grade is being discussed and evaluated.
Throughout the Academy’s curriculum students
utilize online resources including interactive tools, video
clips and Skype communications, allowing them to
interact globally with other students, individuals and
educators adding to the dynamic, inventive nature of
their educational experience.
Faculty Development
Faculty and administrators continue to attend and
participate in workshops to improve their knowledge and
teaching skills and to keep abreast of current
developments in teaching and technology. Workshops
attended have included numerous programs offered by
the Archdiocese of Newark, the New Jersey Association of
Independent Schools and college level courses at
Caldwell College.
Academic Initiatives
The Middle School participated in the National
Geography Bee, an entertaining and challenging test of
geographic knowledge, designed to ignite student interest
in the subject. The challenge is open to students in
grades four through eight and takes place throughout
thousands of schools across the United States and around
the world. Lacordaire students from the fifth through
eighth grades competed in the first round and 10 winners
emerged.
French III students explored the French language and
culture via a unique program developed at the University
of Texas (UT). Lacordaire students followed the exploits
of the UT students, who participated in a summer
program in Lyon, France. In addition, Lacordaire
students watched video-based materials that emphasized
the interaction of native French speakers, as well as,
scenes of day-to-day interactions.
Working with members of its community the Academy
augments the education of its Upper School students by
allowing them to shadow a professional in their business.
This intersession program greatly enhances their
knowledge and education as they move toward a career.
The program involves at least four hours a day
shadowing a professional from a field of endeavor the
student is interested in. The shadowing experience
consists of learning the day to day work of a given
profession, assisting in the office, observing appropriate
business dress and professional conduct, attending
meetings, if appropriate, or any other activities which
would shed light on the chosen career. The Academy has
arranged for shadowing experiences which included
professions such as teaching, law enforcement, fashion
retail ownership, law, marketing, restaurant
management, salon ownership and medicine among
others.
Academic Measures
The Academy prides itself on the accomplishments of
its student body in the area of standardized test and
college entrance exam scores; high school and college
acceptances; scholarships awards and admittance into
honors and scholars programs. These markers are
indicators of passionate learners, progressive teaching
methods and sound curriculum.
This year’s eighth grade students have been admitted
to their top high school choices, have been offered
various scholarships and admitted into honors and
scholars programs. The Upper School seniors have
completed their college applications and received
multiple admissions to numerous colleges and
universities. All the graduates will be attending college
and over 80% of the class was offered a total of
$1,297,200 in academic, athletic and community
scholarships to attend college.
Compared to the mean COOP score of all schools in
the Archdiocese of Newark, Lacordaire’s scores for the
eighth grade students in Reading was six percentile
points higher, Language was eight points higher and
Math was three points higher. According to the
Archdiocese’s review, 62.5% of the eighth grade class
scored in the “well above average” to “highest” range in
both the Math and Language sections of the test; in
Reading 50% of our students scored “well above average”
or higher.
The Terra Nova Writing Assessment test results were
excellent. The fourth grade attained a mean score of 5.0
which puts them in the top 98% of students who took the
test nationally and the seventh grade earned a mean of 4.8
which is in the top 91%. ACT scores stood in the 80% range.
Tutoring and Learning
Support Programs
The Academy offers a wealth of study and tutoring
assistance for students throughout the year. The peer
tutoring program, offered to students in the first through
eighth grade, consists of sixth through eighth grade
students serving as peer tutors. In addition, faculty are

available for extra help during tutorial period in the
Upper School and after school in both the Middle School
and Upper School. Tutorial services, provided by the state
and coordinated by the Essex Regional Services, are also
available. All tutoring is provided free of charge and is
offered in addition to the regular help received from
faculty during extended homeroom and lunch period.
Guidance
A new guidance course was introduced and offered to
the sophomores, juniors, and seniors and a study skills
course to the freshmen. The courses have helped the
juniors and seniors to focus on college prep and enabled
the sophomores to work through everyday challenges in
their lives and at school. The Academy’s academic
advisement program, which pairs faculty advisors with
students to meet one-on-one, allows faculty and advisors
to identify which students could benefit by attending
mandatory tutorial sessions.
Beyond the Classroom
To enhance the classroom learning experience,
throughout the year, the Academy offers field trips to
local area cultural, educational and environmental
resources. Lower, Middle and Upper School students
enjoyed field trips to local area plays at Montclair State
University and Drew University; visits to NYC art galleries,
museums, world-class attractions and relevant sites; a
bowling challenge and environmental sites.
Fine Arts Department
The fine arts department at Lacordaire consisting of
the visual arts, music and theater arts programs which
seek to encourage, develop and inspire both fine and
performing artists. Every student is encouraged to
participate and express themselves through creativity.
Each year student art is displayed in local area venues, as
well as, showcased at the Academy’s annual art museum
event, which teaches students how to curate and display
their own work. Fine art is offered in the Upper School as
a major course all four years, culminating in a senior
portfolio which students can use to apply to postsecondary art schools.
The Academy continues its tradition of excellence by
offering abundant musical and performance based
activities hoping to instill in each student a lifelong
appreciation for the arts. A number of full scale theater
productions and musical concerts are offered throughout
the year. And students are given opportunities to develop
musical skills, performance experience and even
participate in the creation and production of original
composition.
Athletics
The Academy’s athletic program allows all players, at
all levels, to develop individual and team building skills,
while participating in competitive county and
independent leagues. All students are encouraged to join
a team and each year, new recruits bring a renewed sense
of energy and fun to the courts and fields.
The Girl’s Varsity Tennis Team had a very successful
season posting a .500 record. They proved to be very
competitive playing in the State Tournament against an
aggressive Oak Knoll Academy. The Varsity Soccer Team
gained important wins ultimately qualifying for the State
Tournament, which unfortunately, due to Hurricane
Sandy, scheduling conflicts and field conditions were
unable to compete. The Varsity Volleyball Team posted a
winning record for the season. The Junior Varsity Team
was competitive and showed future promise.
The Boys Middle School Basketball Team, with the
help of their coach, got off to an excellent start and
remained competitive through their season building
character and exceptional skills.
The Girls Middle School Basketball Team recruited a
new team with very competitive players.
While the Varsity Basketball Team began the season
with a slow start, they finished the season with an
impressive win over Newark Eastside High School.
The Girl’s Varsity Softball Team, on the heels of last
years’ success, recorded a first win versus Palisades Park
High School. The team has plenty of games left this
season and is ready for another successful run. A Boys
Middle School Tennis Team has been formed for the first
time this year. They will play a six game season with
plenty of court time for practice and instruction. A Girls
Upper School Lacrosse Club has been formed and has
begun practice, skill instruction and repetitive drills.
competes in the North Jersey Junior Forensics League
public speaking competition. The competition, which is
made up of four competitive meets, held throughout the
year, and brings together nine private Catholic Schools in
the area, which make up the league. Overall the team
remains in first place winning all of their competitions to
date.
Safety Management
The ongoing safety and well being of the Academy’s
students, faculty and administrators is of paramount
importance. Proper training, equipment and facility
maintenance, equipment upgrades and the use of the
latest technology to bolster our safety efforts is a constant
focus. The Academy recently purchased eight additional
programmable walkie talkies to enhance our ability to
communicate and announce an emergency. The intent is
to provide one device per classroom and one for
playground coverage. Ensuring that there is controlled
access to the campus buildings is a constant initiative.
Academy Wide
To ensure the highest quality accreditation through
peer evaluation the Academy participates in The Middle
States Association of Colleges and Schools’ review
process. The Academy’s Middle States Planning
Committee has met to review and measure the
accomplishments toward reaching our proposed goals
and objectives. As part of the process, action teams will
continue to review, update and revise the strategic plan.
In addition, a survey will be sent to the Academy
community to gauge our progress and gain information
on areas that may need improvement.
TUITION RAFFLE
Club News
The Academy strongly believes that much of a
student’s learning continues outside the classroom. For
this reason the Academy offers a wide variety of club
activities intended to enhance the curriculum, encourage
students to try something new, develop their individual
talents, make friendships and build a closer community
of learners. Leadership opportunities are available in all
of the extra-curricular activities.
Recent notable highlights included the Mock Trial
team’s successful results in the state-wide Mock Trial
Competition. Competing against other Essex County
teams, the plaintiff and defendant teams both won at the
preliminary rounds. The defense went on to win at the
quarterfinal level, which meant that Lacordaire
advanced to the semi-final round for the first time since
the team was revived five years ago. The team lost in a
closely contested competition in the semi-final round.

Lumen Award Honorees
Maureen McEvoy
Maureen McEvoy, lovingly known as Senora,
among the students at the Academy, served as the
Spanish teacher from 1982 until 1995. During this
time, she has many unforgettable memories she still
happily recalls today. Maureen not only enjoyed her
role as a teacher, but also cherished working with
her fellow colleagues and her home room
moderators. She worked closely with them to
coordinate numerous activities including the
junior/senior prom and the ring ceremony.
Prior to joining Lacordaire Maureen earned her bachelor of arts degree from Regis
College in 1951 and her New Jersey teacher certification from Montclair State University
in 1982. Maureen and her husband of 60 years, Albert, have five children, two of whom
attended Lacordaire (Mary Carmel Giannetti ’72 and Jane McEvoy ’73), nine
grandchildren and one great grandchild with another grandchild on the way.
Along with her fellow foreign language teachers, while at Lacordaire, Maureen
participated as a moderator of the foreign language club and orchestrated the foreign
language banquet. Maureen also has fond memories of several educational trips with
the students to New York City museums to study Spanish and French artists through the
ages.
In 1995, following her teaching career at Lacordaire, Maureen moved to Maine,
where she now resides. She keeps busy with visits to her children and volunteer activities
at a local area food pantry, Meals on Wheels and various church committees.
Maureen fondly recalls her years at Lacordaire as joyful and fulfilling. She points to
her warm associations with the students and faculty, which provided her with thirteen
years of personal accomplishment and fun. Maureen is noted as saying “My memories
of Lacordaire have warmed me during the long Maine winters.”
The Sisters of St. Dominic
We are grateful to the Sisters of St. Dominic, who have served on the staff, faculty and
board of the Academy for their vision and valor in founding Lacordaire and to those who
have sustained the legacy since its inception. Lacordaire has a proud history and a
vibrant future, as we move into the 21st century, with persistent vigor and enthusiasm.
The Academy would not be the uniquely wonderful place it is today without the Sisters of
St. Dominic.
“My memories of Lacordaire have warmed me during the long
Maine winters.”
