Just One (more) Floyd
Hi,
Lots of good stuff happening in
the next few weeks, beer stuff that is.
See below.
I finally managed to get to Duclaw
Brewing for one of their new beer
tappings. A strong (14%) Belgian named
"Repent". 'Twas decent altho a little on
the spiced/herbed side. In fact the guy
next to me made a face and said he could
get this at CVS. His friend said what the
hell you talking about; he said
"Robitussin". It wasn't that bad but worth
a laugh (maybe you had to be there).
You've seen the note(s) about Lancaster's
Blues & Brews on 1,2 Oct, hope you can
make it.
The Hollman's and myself are
scheduled to help at the Kennett brewfest
on 8 Oct. Their last mailing indicated
they could use more help so if so inclined
go to: www.historickennettsquare.com
The following Sunday, 9th, is our
club picnic. Alex Barger is developing
details, let him know if you are coming.
Still thirsty? Stoudt's is the weekend
following that.
If you get to King Of Prussia
check out RockBottom's Rocktoberfest,
pretty decent. Part of Cindy's and my
symbyotic relation, she checks out
Nordstroms, etc. and .....well you guessed
it.
Was just at DogFish Head and
they had a glass cylinder full of hop
flowers plumbed to one of the taps,
always something different down there!
Seems they attach it to different styles
and change the hops in between, this time
it was with 60 minute, as if it needed a
hops boost, WOW!
'till wed., toast.

Bob and Lou’s Excellent Belgian Adventure
Lou ponders the meaning of life and also wonders how
long does it take to get to Antwerp ?
The resident cat at the Kulminator enjoys an Orval.
Finally we get there. But things quickly become fuzzy at
the “Kulminator” !
On the way back to Brussels we stop at the Het Anker
Brewery in Mechelen, the makers of Golden Carolus
beers.

CRAFT BREWERIES HIT BY HURRICANE KATRINA
Craft breweries in Louisiana and Mississippi felt the wrath of Hurricane
Katrina along with the residents and others businesses in those states. A few
of the breweries and brewpubs along the Gulf Coast have resumed operations,
but many have not even been heard from yet and it appears some were
destroyed. The largest producer in the region, Abita Brewing in Abita
Springs, La., reportedly was damaged and is without power - so 6,000 barrels
(more than 180,000 gallons) are spoiling. The Brewers Association and
ProBrewer.com continue to seek information and provide updates.

BREWERIES CONTRIBUTE WATER, CASH
America's two largest brewing companies, Anheuser-Busch and Miller Brewing,
both moved quickly to aid victims of Hurricane Katrina. Four A-B plants
devoted a portion of their capacity to canning drinking water and the company
has already contributed more than four million cans of water, with two
million cans per week still being produced. The Anheuser-Busch Foundation
also donated $1 million to the Red Cross to help ongoing relief efforts along
the Gulf Coast communities devastated by Katrina. In addition, the company is
matching contributions made by its employees to the Red Cross Hurricane
Katrina relief efforts and is matching up to an additional $1 million from
its independent wholesalers nationwide. Miller Brewing donated $500,000 to
the relief efforts and will match all contributions from its employees and
distributor partners up to an additional $500,000. Miller also continues to
provide drinking water from its Albany, Georgia, brewery to communities
throughout Louisiana and Mississippi. Information is just starting arrive
about contributions from smaller breweries. For instance, Deschutes Brewery
in Bend, Ore., contributed two dollars for every one dollar that employees
pledged to the American Red Cross, raising $24,000.
NORTH CAROLINA POPS THE CAP
North Carolina Gov. Mike Easley officially super-sized beer within the state
when he signed into effect the law that boosts the alcohol limit on beer from
6% to 15%. "It's done," said Julie Bradford, who helped lead a statewide
grass-roots campaign called Pop the Cap, which pushed for the change. "I
wasn't going to celebrate until it was definite." Beer distributors quickly
lined up shipments of stronger draft and bottled brews into the state. It
took more than two years of lobbying and the efforts of a grass roots
organization called Pop the Cap to get the law changed.

MONKS STILL HAVE BEER
Have the monks at the abbey of Saint Sixtus of Westvleteren in Belgium run
out of the beer that a popular Internet website ranked No. 1 in the world?
The story was too juicy for headline writers to ignore. One headline from
Reuters UK read: "Belgian monks run out of the world's best beer." The
Ananova news web site said, "More beer? Not a prayer!" And the Telegraph in
India is as dramatic: "Oh God! No beer!" In fact, there was beer. The three
beers brewed at the monastery remained for sale for in-house consumption at
In de Vrede, the cafe the monks own across the road from their West Flanders
monastery. However, cases were not for sale at the monastery gates and sales
of beer to go at the café were reduced and at times temporarily halted. As
demand slows for beer at In de Vrede more beer should be available for sale
at the gates, but the monks made it clear they have no plans to boost
production and sales at the brewery door will be limited.

OMMEGANG BEER BREWED IN BELGIUM
Brewery Ommegang in Cooperstown, N.Y., can't make enough beer, so has
turned to its "parent" - Duvel Moortgat in Belgium - for help. Moortgat recently
began brewing Ommegang's flagship Ommegang Ale for sale in 750ml bottles
in the United States, and will continue to do so until Ommegang's capacity
catches up with demand. The first shipments have reached Ommegang's East
Coast warehouse and bottles should be on the West Coast by Sept. 22. Brewery
Ommegang will continue to make Ommegang Ale to be sold in 12-ounce bottles
and occasionally in kegs as well as the range of beers it has added since
first brewing Ommegang Ale in 1997. Athough Ommegang expanded capacity
40% in 2005, rising demands means that production of the 750s of Ommegang
Ale in Belgium may continue through 2006.

BRITISH BREWERS ADD HEALTH WARNINGS
Alcohol companies in Great Britain have struck a deal with the Department of
Health to print health warnings on nearly all cans and bottles containing
beer and spirits. The industry hopes to avoid legislation to force it to
introduce stark health warnings similar to those on cigarette packets. By the
end of the year, 85% of beer sold in cans and bottles will have some kind of
warning or guidance about drinking responsibly. Many brands of spirits will
also carry the new messages. Observers have predicted that, like cigarette
health warnings, the messages on alcohol packaging will gradually become
more prominent. In 1971, cigarette makers first displayed small messages on
their packets on a voluntary basis. The messages are compulsory and now large
areas of cigarette packets are taken up with blunt warnings such as "Smoking
kills."

CARLTON'S 'BIG AD' INTERNET HIT
Carlton Draught's Big Ad tapped into modern technology to live up to its
"big" claim, with millions of copies of the ad being downloaded in August as
links appeared on thousands of Internet blogs. The ad features
computer-generated armies of men wearing robes running toward each other
while chanting the ad's message. A shot from the air shows a man lift a pint
of beer, with scores of yellow-robed men racing into his mouth and on into
his stomach. Foster's Australia first emailed the ad to 400 employees in July
before releasing the television commercial. It's since been downloaded about
2 million times, and the brewer has even scaled back the commercial's TV air
time.

WESTVLETEREN: A LITTLE PERSPECTIVE
Why - after their beer has been hailed as the best in the world and when
customers have waited in a line several kilometers long for a chance to buy
their beer - don't the monks at Westvleteren expand their brewing capacity? A
trip inside the monastery offers perspective.

THE PASSION OF MONDOVINO
"Mondovino" is a documentary about the wine business, but the parallels with
beer are obvious. Stephen Beaumont looks at the DVD and writes: "But when it
comes down to wine or beer, or for that matter, almost any food or drink,
there are those producers who will opt for the technical ideal and others who
will instead seek to craft with passion and skill an individualistic,
sometimes idiosyncratic absolute. And nine times out of ten, I will side with
the latter camp."

BIO BEER: KIND TO THE LIVER?
A beer launched in southern India claims to vitamin rich and protect the
liver from harmful effects of alcohol. Ladybird Bio Beer contains aloe-vera
extracts as well as the normal ingredients of barley malt and hops, said
inventor B. Srinivas Amarnath. Bio Beer is already being exported to Canada,
and inquiries have come from Malaysia and the United States, he said, adding
that a delegation from the United Kingdom had visited and had shown interest
in the product. Amarnath said research showed that it did not harm the liver
or cause ulcers and gastric illness. "The results of human clinical trials
have shown aloe vera increases the bioavailability of vitamins like B1, B6,
B12, C and E," said CB Jagannatha Rao, senior vice president of Khoday group
of industries.

A DRINKING SKIRT: THE LEDERHOSEN ALTERNATIVE
German designers are promoting a skirt for male drinkers to wear at Munich's
Oktoberfest. They say their Oktoberfest Frock is more comfortable than
traditional lederhosen. Doreen Anders and Andreas Landinger, from Munich,
say they were influenced by the Scottish kilt in creating the drinking-dress that
comes in short or calf length. There are no tartan designs but the kilt comes
in colors in-keeping with the blue-and-white Bavarian flag and other symbols
of the Oktoberfest beer festival.

A-B ROLLS OUT ANOTHER CAFFEINATED MALT DRINK
Anheuser-Busch Co. has rolled out another caffeinated malt beverage - this
one aimed to be even less beer-like than B-to-the-E, which debuted nine
months ago. Tilt, a raspberry-flavored drink, targets 21- to 27-year-old
males who want a beverage that helps them make the transition to play from
work, said Mic Zavarella, director of innovation at A-B's domestic brewing
subsidiary. "Tilt was designed with this transition in mind," he said. Tilt
is a blend of caffeine, ginseng and guarana - a paste derived from a
Brazilian fruit. However, Tilt has a taste and a color that's distinctive
from "BE," which took many of its cues from a beer, said Pat McGauley, vice
president of innovation and new products at A-B's domestic brewing unit.

WHILE MILLER DECIDES TO STICK WITH BEER
Just one week after Anheuser-Busch announced it would launch Tilt, Miller
Brewing dropped its test marketing of a fruit-flavored malt beverage to focus
on its core beer brands. Miller's drink, Brutal Fruit, didn't pan out with
consumers when it was tested this spring and summer in three cities:
Richmond, Va., Tampa, Fla., and Seattle, said Miller spokesman Peter Marino.
Brutal Fruit is basically fruit juice with 5% alcohol by volume, a level
similar to beer. Available in four flavors, it has does well in South Africa
with the main consumers are women between 24 and 35. Brutal Fruit and other
flavored malt beverages are aimed at consumers in their 20s who grew up
drinking juice and soda and favor sweeter beverages.

KIDSBEER
A Japanese company has turned a non-alcoholic brew called Kidsbeer into a
surprising success. The drink started out as Guarana, a cola beverage sold at
Yuichi Asaba's Shitamachi-ya restaurant in Fukuoka. Asaba renamed the sweet
carbonated drink Kidsbeer, a move that made it an instant hit. Asaba
outsourced its production to Tomomasu. Tomomasu tinkered with the drink by
decreasing its sweetness and increasing its frothiness, the company said. It
began shipping the new version in late 2003. Tomomasu originally shipped 200
bottles per month, and now produces 75,000. The drink, one of whose
ingredients is the Latin American plant guarana, sells for around 380 yen per
330ml bottle. The bottles themselves are colored brown to make the drink look
even more like beer.

BEER PONG BANNED
Forget beer pong on part of the Jersey Shore. The borough of Belmar banned
outdoor games involving alcohol. The so-called "Beer Pong" ordinance
prohibits alcohol-related games or contests on porches, decks, lawns, front
and side yards, or anywhere that can be viewed by the public and neighbors.
The regulation takes its name from a drinking game in which players bounce
ping pong balls into cups of beer - then drink the beer. Borough clerk
Margaret Plummer said residents near rental areas have complained about
people playing such games on their front lawns, getting progressively drunk
and noisy.

STAR BOCK, STARBUCKS COMPROMISE
A Texas bar owner can resume sales of his Star Bock beer but can't sell it
regionally or nationally after a federal judge ruled in his copyright dispute
with the Seattle-based Starbucks coffee chain. U.S. District Judge Sam Kent
ruled that Rex Bell's sale of Star Bock beer or promotional items sold from
the Acoustic Cafe near Houston "does not in any way infringe, unfairly
compete with, dilute or otherwise impugn Starbucks brands or trademarks."
However the judge said that he could not sell out outside his Old Quarter
Acoustic Cafe. Bell said he got the idea for his beer after a customer asked
for one Texas beer, Lone Star, and changed his order to another Texas beer,
Shiner Bock. He's said that when he joked he could serve a Star Bock beer,
the idea for the beer was born.

QUOTE OF THE MONTH
Charlie Bamforth, who since 1999 he has held the Anheuser-Busch endowed
professorship of malting and brewing at University of California-Davis, was
asked if he ever does any homebrewing. His answer:
"No. If I was a brain surgeon, I wouldn't go home and operate on my wife. I
leave my day job there."
