The Marketing Luncheon & Summit will be held from
12:00 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday, June 28. The interactive session will focus on a variety of marketing issues
and initiatives and will feature an Open Forum for attendees to discuss issues and share ideas and relevant experiences. Presenters from outside the high school
marketing space will also be present to provide their expertise and perspective.
This session will be an in-depth workshop regarding technology. This session is typically geared toward the staff
members directly involved in the development and
management of the technology infrastructure and Web
services within the organization. The final topic list, determined by state association and NFHS staff, will be distributed to the membership in April.

will include an update from NFHS staff and an open forum

their first Summer Meeting. This is intended to provide an
introduction to the meeting and to introduce you to each
NFHS administrator. NFHS staff members will share their

Established in 1859, Virginia City became the richest mining town in the world. San
Francisco was built from the mines of the Comstock and the Civil War was partially financed from the gold and silvers discovered beneath the city. Today’s Virginia City is
remarkably the same as it was during its heyday with wooden sidewalks, restored mansions, “Old West” saloons the Piper Opera House and mine tours. Mark Twain began
his illustrious writing career at Virginia City’s own “Territorial Enterprise.” Your guests
can visit his, as well as numerous other, museums, shops, mansions and churches in
this richly historic town during their free time.
A sandwich lunch area will be set up in Piper’s Opera House or park area.
Guests may want to meander down to Grandma’s Fudge for something to satisfy their
sweet tooth before enjoying free time for shopping, sight-seeing or just people-watching
before the return trip to Reno.

This tour begins when we head south on Highway 395 through Washoe Valley, Carson
City (Nevada’s state capital) and up Spooner Summit to the shores of beautiful Lake
Tahoe, one of Northern America’s largest Alpine Lakes.
Guests will arrive at Zephyr Cove where they will board the M.S. Dixie II. Guests will
experience a memorable evening as the boat cruises beneath a magnificent Lake Tahoe
sunset. Begin the cruise with dinner, followed by cocktails and dancing, and guests will
celebrate the Tahoe night, dancing to a live band and taking a stroll on the starlit deck.
Experience a delightful evening while enjoying panoramic views of Emerald Bay in the
sparkling late afternoon sunlight. The narrated tour complements the natural beauty of
Lake Tahoe as you take in dazzling vistas of the Sierras, the dramatic splendor of Emerald Bay, Fannette Island and the unique Vikingsholm Castle.
A guide will narrate and point out interesting historical and cultural sites along the way.
Upon docking, guests will board the bus and be transported back to the Peppermill, arriving at approximately 11:00 p.m.

BAGGO TOURNAMENT

The 2016 Summer Meeting BAGGO Tournament will kick off on June 28 at the Welcome Dinner. Each state association will be represented with one entry in the 51-team
BAGGO Tournament bracket. Many states conduct their own “State Games” before
arriving at the Summer Meeting; however, for those states that do not, the BAGGO
boards will be open for free play from 6:00 p.m. until 7:15 p.m. on June 28 to determine
the state representative in the BAGGO Tournament. States will have until 7:15 p.m. to
narrow down to one team to participate in the tournament that will begin promptly at
7:30 p.m.

Games will continue throughout the Welcome Dinner to determine the quarterfinals
participants – one state from each section. The quarterfinal games will be played at 4:00
p.m. Thursday, June 30. The BAGGO semifinals and finals will be played on Saturday,

Cheering sections and team shirts have made this a fun event and are welcome! State
association staff, spouses and board members are all encouraged to participate. The
tournament bracket will be disseminated to state associations with official start times

With the 2016 Summer Meeting, the NFHS will celebrate its 97th year since the states recognized the need
to work together on behalf of the young men and
women participating in interscholastic athletics and activities. In that same spirit of cooperation, the NFHS is
seeking your help in building the NFHS Foundation. The
mission of the Foundation is to promote the development of citizenship skills among young student-athletes
and participants, as well as to reduce the risks of injury
when participating in high school sports.

During the 2014-15 school year, grants provided to the
membership by the NFHS Foundation reached
$500,600 since its inception. The majority of these
grants came in the form of dollars to state associations
to promote student citizenship/leadership. The Foundation has also funded research and education-based information on risk minimization and sports medicine. All
of these grants are made possible through the active
support of our member state associations.

Opening in 1969, Lake Ridge has provided
great golf, excellent food and terrific service to visitors and locals. The layout offers
breathtaking views of Reno and the surrounding mountains. Its signature hole, No.
15, is a world-famous par 3 set high atop a
rocky ridge 140 feet above Lake Stanley to

It was another successful year for the annual NFHS Fun Run/Walk last year in New
Orleans as 184 people signed up for either
the run or walk. This year, our goal is 250
for the 21st Annual Fun Run/Walk in Reno.
If you haven’t participated in the Summer
Meeting Fun Run/Walk in the past, this is
your year! The 5K (3.1 miles) run/walk is
scheduled for beautiful Sparks Marina.
Transportation will be available.
The NFHS Foundation Fun Run/Walk is a
great way to get some exercise, socialize
with state association friends, view the
sights of Reno during your walk/run and receive some great prizes. Sign up your
spouse, family members and other guests.
Remember, all participants are winners in

competition. Join the fun this year and

TOP TEN THINGS TO DO IN RENO
1. Visit Lake Tahoe

By car, it takes about 45 minutes to get to North Lake
Tahoe from downtown Reno. Admittedly, the quiet side
of the lake, North Lake is convenient and has great
beaches and restaurants, such as the Lone Eagle Grille at
the Hyatt and the famous Gar Woods restaurant near
Tahoe City, Calif. For anyone who has never seen Lake
Tahoe, this is a must-do. The highest-elevation alpine lake
in the U.S., Lake Tahoe is known for its mystical clarity,
allowing visitors to see clear to the bottom at 70-plus-foot
depths. The casino-heavy strip of South Lake Tahoe is
usually what people are exposed to when they see images of Lake Tahoe. But the north side offers a more natural setting along the northern coast. Check out the Kings
Beach area if you want to get your toes in the sand later
in the morning. Sand Harbor, just south of the Hyatt Regency on Highway 28, is one of the most popular beaches
on the lake; you’ll want to get there before 9:00 a.m. on
most weekends, otherwise you’ll be looking at difficult
parking situations and a long walk to the beach.
Home of the Comstock Lode, this 19th century mining
town is partially responsible for shaping the west as we
know it. The first major discovery of silver ore in the U.S.
was found in this small mining town, about 40 minutes
southeast of Reno. The wooden sidewalks, along with the
businesses they line, are still maintained in an Old West
fashion, and (fake) gunfights still break out on occasion.
Virginia City offers stagecoach rides, mine tours, cemetery tours, and even ghost tours, as well as historical artifacts. The old Virginia Truckee railroad once carried silver
to be processed in Carson City. It has been restored and
regularly offers tours along the old rail line, where you can
get a glimpse into the past.

The Nevada Museum of Art is the state’s only nationally
accredited art museum. Located in downtown Reno,
NMA features three floors of modern, contemporary and
historical exhibits, including the Emancipation Proclamation, which was brought in from the National Archives to
celebrate Nevada’s 150th year of statehood. The museum
regularly rotates exhibits, so if even if you’ve been in the
past, there’s always something new to explore.

The 18th Annual Barracuda Championship runs June 30th
– July 3rd at Montrêux Golf & Country Club. This playerfavorite tournament features the Modified Stableford scoring format, encouraging PGA TOUR professionals to “go
for it!” Notable players such as Geoff Ogilvy, Padraig Harrington, John Daly, Retief Goosen and two-time winner
J.J. Henry have competed in the tournament, which is fun
for spectators of all ages.

July in Reno means one thing Artown! This arts and culture festival features more than 500 multi-disciplinary
events of live music, dance, theater, visual arts, workshops and art walks, the majority of which are free. The
National Endowment for the Arts has called Artown one
of the most comprehensive arts festivals in the country.

Come again? Yes: ALL. YOU. CAN. EAT. SUSHI. Six days
a week, fresh fish and seafood are trucked, and flown, in
to The Biggest Little City. Reno is a hub for shipping
throughout the west, including the Pacific Northwest. The
big casinos in Reno serve so much seafood, that other,
smaller restaurants around town started to get in on the
abundance of fresh seafood coming into the area. Now,
more than two dozen restaurants serve All-You-Can-Eat
Sushi, lunch and dinner. And it’s not going to kill your
bankroll! Lunch typically costs $15 to $24, and dinners can
run anywhere from $19 to $30 per person. Your host
hotel, Peppermill has great sushi at Oceano; there’s a
good one at a nearby hotel, and a handful of great sushi
spots within a short drive of the hotel as well. The only
thing you’ll regret, is that you ate too much.
6. Biggest Little Wing Fest
Wing lovers will gather in downtown Reno to sample outstanding sauces and top-notch wings, July 2nd – 4th.
Competitors from award-winning local and regional
restaurants will tantalize the palates of festival-goers. It
features free live entertainment, a street fair, crafts and
memorabilia vendors.

9. & 10. Take a Hike
Reno and Tahoe hiking trails incorporate some of the most
beautiful scenery in all of Northern Nevada with one of the
purest forms of exercise. Find a trail that gets you a view
of the entire city, or hike through the pines off of the eastern slopes of the Sierra and discover some hidden waterfalls. Whether you’re looking to take a short hike,
mountain bike, horseback ride, or trail run, you can do it
all in our beautiful mountain landscape that inspires so
many pictures and portraits of this area. Just remember
to lather on that sunscreen and bring plenty of water to
keep you hydrated.
