SUMMER OF SPORT
Your key dates this summer
Her Majesty
Queen Elizabeth II
Official Birthday
Will you be
participating in
Beer Day Britain?
This year, the
country will
get together to
celebrate the
Queens 90th
Birthday with a
three day party
beginning on
Friday 10th June,
with various events taking place
across the UK on Sunday 12th
June. Licensing hours have also
been extended to 1am on both
Friday 10th and Saturday 11th
June, which also coincides with
England and Wales’ first games in
the EURO 2016 tournament. This is
a weekend for smashing sales!
The idea of Beer Day Britain is
for people to drink beer, and
celebrate the national drink.
12th June
There will be a series of events over the
June weekend to mark the Queen’s 90th
birthday, including a street party in The
Mall, a service of thanksgiving at St Paul’s
Cathedral and the traditional Trooping
the Colour ceremony, also known as the
Queen’s Birthday Parade, at Horse Guards
Parade. How can you celebrate in your pub?
•Check out details of other local street
parties that are being organised and see
how you could get involved - maybe you
could bring the BBQ, or donate some
beer, or even give everyone a voucher
to come and have a drink with you
afterwards.
•If you can’t do a garden party or BBQ,
why not have a proper old fashioned tea
party? Make little sandwiches with the
crusts cut off and yummy cakes.
•Hold a British street food festival (hand
held food) and invite other local suppliers
(e.g. cheese shops, bakeries etc.) to visit
to sell and sample their wares.
•Face painters for the children.
•Punch & Judy show.
•Morris dancers and Folk Band.
•British/English themed quiz.
•A special Diamond Jubilee menu to be
served on the day or a great range of
British Puddings.
•Afternoon teas - that include sandwiches
and cakes.
•British bar snacks - if ever there was
a time to have a great range of old
fashioned British bar snacks - this will be
the time to do it.
•If you have some English wines in stock
this is a good time to put them on
chalkboards.
Don’t miss out on a
FREE PIMM’s kit, see page 22
15th June
• Encouraging people to drink beer
whether that is at the pub, a barbeque,
party, picnic, brewery tap room, on an
ale rail.
• To raise the profile of beer as Britain’s
national drink.
• To make people proud of Britain’s beer
and pubs today and of Britain’s heritage
as the world’s brewing powerhouse
and its role in spreading the love and
knowledge of beer to all of earth’s
hemispheres.
• To introduce a friend to beer and try and
convert them to become regular beer
drinkers.
• To have a fantastic time drinking and
enthusing about our favourite drink!
Things you can do;
• Encourage your customers to join
in the national cheers to beer at 7pm
on June 15th
• Hosting special events e.g. fancy dress
parties, hog roast, medieval pub
games tournament
• Offering special beer lunch/dinner
menus with beer
Host a mini-beer festival
Use your social media to build support for
Beer Day Britain?
A highlight of the day is the National
Cheers to Beer which happens at 7, when
people raise a glass and say Cheers To
Beer. You are encouraged to use social
media to Tweet or Instagram a message/
photo with the hashtag #CheersToBeer
Will you join us and participate in this
special day to mark our wonderful national
drink? Don’t forget to tell us what you are

Father’s Day
School Holidays
Summer Festivals
Bank Holiday
Today is the day when we honour
our dads for all their years of
hard work! Give your customers
the opportunity to make their
dad aware of his worth this
Father’s Day.
During the summer break,
parents are forever looking for
fun and engaging activities for
their little ones, if you’re family
friendly then make sure your pub
is the chosen place to be!
Bank holidays are a fantastic way
to drive Sunday evening trade
and August bank holiday marks
the end of summer, so why not
go out with a bang?
Here are a few great ideas to make
your pub the destination for Father’s
Day. Attracting new customers and
giving your existing customers a
reason to come back and celebrate
with you…
The summer holidays span from July
to September giving you nearly two
months of sales-driving opportunities.
Want to really give your
customers something to talk
about this summer? Then host
your very own Summer Festival.
Whether it’s beer, wine, cider or
all three, it’s sure to draw in new
customers and drive your sales!
19th June
• Pull your own pint Why not let every dad
with a booking of 4 or more pull their
own pint. Let their kiddies take photos
and even take one of your own. You
could create a dad hall of fame wall.
• Who’s the daddy Host a quiz night
or a while you wait competition
with photographs of celebrities with
famous dads and begin the game of
‘who’s the daddy’ guessing who the
celebrity’s famous father is. If they get
all the questions right, give them a 20%
discount off their food bill.
• Father’s Day Package Create a 3 course
set price menu with a choice of fine wine,
beer or whiskey to accompany the meal.
Try a ‘dine for less’ approach making it
appealing to your customers. Give each
menu a catchy name such as ‘the cod
father’ for a fish and chips special, and
‘dads steak your claim’ for the traditional
steak and chips option. Why not donate
50p of the meal price to a charity of your
choice such as Macmillan and raise some
money for a great cause!
• Dads get a free pint Offer dads a free
pint of Youngs London Stout when 3 or
more main meals are ordered. This is a
great way to attract the whole family to
come and celebrate their dads at your
pub.
Win a Young’s London Stout
taxi for a day, see page 21
June and July - August
Affordable dining is an easy and
successful way to draw in customers
with quick wins such as a children’s
menu or promotions such as kids
eat for £1 when an adult orders a full
price meal from the main menu, or a
free fruit shoot with any kid’s meal.
Make sure you have colouring sheets
or activity packs to keep the kids
busy whilst they wait for their meals,
check out www.pack-me.com for
downloadable value packs!
If you have a big enough garden you
could always hire a bouncy castle or
some giant board games from Peeks.
June - August
They can take a fair bit of organising
but the potential benefits are
enormous! They are hugely popular
amongst customers and great for
business – short and long term.
A well organised event, offering
a great range of drinks, food and
entertainment can really put your
pub on the map, showcase what you
have to offer, pull in new customers
and provide a massive profit boost to
your business.
Want to find out more about how
to host your own Summer Festival?

Festival’ guide from our Facebook

from other licensees. OR check out
‘How to run a beer festival’

‘Wine Fest’ kits to run your own wine
festival this Summer, see
page 14 for more details.
29th August
Put on special drinks offers such as
four pint pitchers, beer buckets and
discounted bottles of wine. If the
weather’s nice then why not have a
BBQ or hog roast in the garden, and
if not put on sharing platters with
samples from your up and coming
autumn menu.
Stock up on Estrella bottles or cans
with our special Summer bucket deal,
see page 18 for more details.
If you’re a family friendly pub then
make sure you have activities on to
keep the kids entertained while their
parents enjoy a nice, relaxing long
weekend with you!

Is your garden
Ready for the
summer?
Get paid to go
EAGLE EYES MYSTERY
CUSTOMER CHECKS
to the pub
We all have Eagle Eyes visit at some point,
as modern retailers we crave feedback to
allow our businesses to grow and prosper. I
have detailed some quick checks in line with
the mystery shopper checks. Let’s get these
right to increase our chance of receiving
£100 reward for a 100% Eagle Eyes mystery
Shopper Report.
8. Play equipment, is it safe, clean and fit for purpose?
9. Menus out, drink and food.
10.Smoking areas clearly marked? Provide clean
ashtrays or buckets.
11.Check external audio and visual equipment.
12.If you allow animals in the garden check for little
packages!
13.General visual checks in all areas to ensure the venue
is safe and welcoming.
14.All staff know how to service the external areas
Top Tips to consider?
We all know our summers are very unpredictable,
however, as retailers we must make the most of every
occasion to make that sale. If we are lucky and the big
shiny ball comes out then we need to make the most
of our trade space and provide a great external venue
for our customers, let’s make sure we are ready to
give them a reason to come to the pub!
Attention to detail is key, so here are some top tips
to consider from an Operational point of view and a
retail point of view.
Operational Standards
Make sure you brief all your staff that you will be
adding external checks prior to and as part of your
opening and closing procedures to ensure the garden
areas are well maintained and ready for business. A
simple external check list for opening and closing is
key to maintain your external standards. Within your
external checklists, make sure you detail and check –
Risk Assessments
Yes I know these can sometimes take a lot of our time,
but they are essential to show your due diligence within
your business operations and this could save you from
costly claims. Have a walk around and assess any trip
hazards, broken garden furniture, un-safe children’s play
equipment, even trees that have dangerous hanging
branches, make a note and take action to resolve any
issues, your external areas need to be safe for your
public!
Staff - Uniform standards
Put staff into a uniform, even if it is a clean pair of jeans
and a polo shirt. It gives identity to your brand and
makes it easier for customers to identify them when
they want another drink or a piece of cutlery is missing
for their al fresco meal.
1. Garden furniture is clean, safe and fit for use
Retail Operations
• Make sure you advertise externally if your
garden can’t be seen to highlight your
garden area, what’s special about it and
what’s going to pull the customer in?
• Garden Menu, both food and drink. You may
need to consider a reduced garden menu
that is easy for staff to deliver, along with
special pitchers for draft beer to promote
volume sales
• Garden Games – Are they in great condition,
do you need new? Giant connect 4 or Jenga
are a couple of favourites!
• Specials boards – just because its outside
does not mean we can’t use one!!
• Picnic Baskets - If you have a large pub
garden, make life easy for yourself by
offering picnic baskets full of menu favorites.
It’s fun for the punters, especially if they are
visiting in a family group or in couples, and
it will be great for your bank balance.
• Blankets are a great idea if you don’t have
a lot of tables!!, when customers order from
the garden menu, give them the option of a
picnic blanket instead of a table number.
• What’s On???, make sure you detail on
A-Boards and signs what
you will be doing on a
weekly and monthly basis,
Summer events, festivals
etc.…
2. The grass is cut, weeding complete
and free from litter
3. Umbrellas and bases present and in working order
4. Fences painted and well presented
1.Was all signage, including chalkboards
clean and well presented?
2.Was the car park (if applicable) and pub
entrance clearly signposted or obvious?
3.Were all exterior areas including car
parks patio and gardens clean and nicely
presented, i.e., no littler cigarette butts,
weeds or dirty glasses present?
4.Was planting (tubs or hanging baskets) in
place and well maintained?
5.Was it clear the pub served food? signage,
banners, A-boards?
6.Was the pub and pub entrance well lit?
7.From the exterior would the pub tempt you
to visit? if not please state why.
8.Are up and coming events being
advertised outside the pub?
9.Did any member of staff or the entire team
excel in customer service to the point that
they deserve a special mention
5. Decking is clean, and has a non-slippery surface
Hope this helps, just some tips and focus
areas that will help you drive your income
during our very short summer period. Good
luck all.
6. Hanging baskets well presented

How to...
Host Your Own
Beer Festival
Festivals are part and parcel of the British summer nowadays and running a Festival is a fantastic opportunity for you to raise
awareness of your pub in your local area, attract new customers,
encourage current customers to visit again and drive your sales
over the summer months.
If you’ve never taken the plunge, here are some key top tips from the people who know
Cask Marque, CAMRA, A-cask and the Morning Advertiser to name but a few.
Stage One - Beer Festival agreement
Before you start organising your Festival, you must seek
authorisation from your RDM and enter into a Beer Festival
agreement with Charles Wells Ltd. We will need to be
advised of the date of your beer festival at least one month
in advance of the event.
Stage Two - Preparation
Preparation is key to the success of your Festival. Make
sure you consider the following when planning your
Festival:
• Date – If possible, try and coincide your Festival with
a key event/date in the calendar. This could be a bank
holiday (when people have a bit more time on their
hands) or to celebrate a key calendar event. People will
be looking for events to go to and things to do at these
times. Check out what your competition have planned
to ensure they aren’t running a festival at the same time
and also check what is happening in the local area to
ensure you are not clashing with anything
else happening in the community.
• Costs and return on investment - carefully
plan the costs - include stock, staff, entertainment and
promotional materials. Always plan for worse-case
scenario and always ensure you get a return on your
investment. Not only recoup your costs but also ensure
you make a profit.
• If you are going to include an added value offer (i.e. a
collector card offering customers the chance to buy 5
pints and get the 6th free), ensure you factor those free
pints into your pricing.
-
Stage Three - The Detail
Legal considerations
• You will need to apply for a
Temporary Event Notice (or TEN).
Your application for a TEN must
be submitted to the licensing
authority, police and EHO no later
than 10 days before the event.
• Make sure the TEN is approved
before you advertise the event,
as the application could be
rejected and you may end up
disappointing your customers.
•
Just remember that, the environmental
health officer can object to a TEN as well as the
police, and conditions from your licence can
be added to the TEN. Nevertheless, you should
expect a bit of leeway from the authorities if
this is genuinely a one-off or annual event.
•
Remember to display a copy of the
approved TEN on site to comply with any
conditions attached to the notice.
• Consult with neighbours - bring them on board from the
beginning, win the PR battle.
Are you going to offer food?
• Food can help enhance your sales and profit margin
during your Festival.
• Why not pull together a menu which links each of your
beers, ciders and wines with a dish on your menu and do
some food matching.
• Take a look at your menu - can you use some of your
existing dishes and make them into a special ‘British’
menu for your Beer Festival i.e steak and ale pie, fish
and chips?
• Tell people about your beer
festival! Sounds simple but
often not enough time is left
for this important part.
• Alternatively, you could have a
3-tier system based on ABV i.e.
one price for below 4% products;
a second price for 4.1% - 4.9%
products; and a third price for
anything above 5%.
• Objective - what do you want to achieve from your
Festival? Obviously you will want to increase sales over
the period, introduce new customers to your pub, and
give something back to you current customers. In order
to do this, you need to ensure you create an experience
they won’t forget. Onto the detail of how you can do
that now!
• Key timings - give yourself
plenty of time to both plan
the event and promote the
event. Promotion should
start at least 4 weeks
before the festival itself to
ensure as many people as
possible are made aware.
You need to factor this into
your planning.
Stage Four Communication
Pricing
• If you decide to have one flat
price across all products, you
should give careful consideration
to the varying profit margins as
each drink will undoubtedly be
priced differently.
Location
• As we all know, the British weather is not always our
friend (!) so it may be a good idea to base most of your
festival inside.
• If you do decide to hold some of your
event outside, make sure you are
able to cover the area to ensure your
event can still go ahead if the weather
decides to be unkind!
• Internal communication
- make sure customers
are made aware of your
Festival at every stage
through their journey
in your pub: External
approach (banner); main
entrance (A board);
internal entrance (chalk
board); front of house
(tasting notes on tables); your bar
(tasting notes in holder); toilets (posters on
the back of doors).
• External communication - make sure your Festival is
communicated on your website, Facebook page and
Twitter page; are there community notice boards you
could place posters on? Would the local paper be
interested in running a feature on you?
• Talk to your existing customers about
it – get them to spread the word for you
- your passion will be more effective at
selling than any poster can be.
• You must ensure you have licensing
permission to hold this event
externally (please see the earlier legal
section for more information).
Equipment
• Obviously, you will need equipment for the beers
themselves i.e. racking, cooling equipment, jackets etc.
This equipment is available to hire from various suppliers
such as A-cask. Simply call 01308 426982 for more
information.
Entertainment
• Is your Festival going to be for the family? If yes - some
things to consider include: hiring face painters, balloon
modellers, a bouncy castle etc.
• If is more for the adults, what about running quizzes/
competitions throughout the day with the winners wining
a prize which can be redeemed in your pub at a future
date i.e. a free meal for 2.
• Ensure staff are fully trained and
confident about selling each of the
beers available and then get them to
spread the word too.
Stage Five - Evaluation
• Look at what you wanted to achieve
and measure if you achieved it. What
have your takings been? Measure
turnover against cost of activity.
• Review with your team - what did
they feel worked/didn’t work/their
ideas for the future.
• What did your customers say capture on comment cards along
with their contact details of
course!

Wine festivals have become an annual event in many major retailers calendars in the UK.
As wine sales continue to grow in pubs and consumers become more and more keen to expand their
knowledge of wines, why not take advantage of this growing trend and and run your own wine-tasting
event? This is a great way of creating an event to drive footfall to your pub and and potentially attract a
new set of consumers who may not have visited your pub before.

W.E. are Tom Warner and Sion Edwards, best friends, craft distillers and creators of
global award winning hand-crafted artisan gins.
From our 200 year old barn on Falls Farm in Harrington, Northamptonshire, we carefully and lovingly distil a range of fantastically smooth and
aromatic gins using our farm’s natural spring water, grain spirit and home-grown ingredients from our farms in both England and Wales. Each batch is
small, and every single bottle is carefully handcrafted by us, from the filling to the wax seal and label finishing.
