Hello Charter School Fanatics!
Wow – 15 years of charter school leaders, teachers, families, and board members coming together for conferences is something to celebrate! This is the biggest annual gathering in South Carolina for all things public charter school related. It is great
to see old friends connecting and new folks joining us for the first time. Next year marks the 20th Anniversary of the Charter Act. It marks a time to reflect on where we have come from, but more
importantly to DREAM BIG and PLAN STRATEGICALLY for the next 20 years of educating students in public charter schools. Mark
your calendars now - next year’s 20th Anniversary Leadership Summit is April 12th, 2016 at the Columbia Marriott.
This school year we have a lot to celebrate with an estimated 30,000 students in 68 public charter schools.
This may be your 15th time at the conference or your first, but I personally guarantee each of us have something new to learn
and someone new to meet. Because of YOU the charter landscape in South Carolina continues to change to meet the needs of
South Carolina’s students.
New School Development Resources:

• Charter committee training and startup technical assistance
• Free strategic site visits to high performing charter schools

mission.

US LATELY?
Communications, Policy Development, and Advocacy:
Studies have been clear that the quality of a state’s charter
school law is a critically important factor in the success of public
charter schools. High quality public charter schools cannot
flourish in a state without robust communications and advocacy
efforts focused on their unique needs as autonomous, innovative schools.
• Policy development with a focus on advancing and fostering
the unique needs of public charter schools
• Coordinated grass roots advocacy focused on parity in funding
and ensuring state laws promote high quality public charter
schools and protect their autonomy and flexibility.
• Ensuring there is public charter school representation on
policy committees and work groups at the state level
• Statewide communications about public charter schools
• Developing facilities solutions for public charter schools
through strategic partnerships
The Alliance website is
your one-stop resource for
all of your charter school
needs. It is filled with great
information about facilities, governance, finance,
start up charters, school
leader and teacher resources, and more! This site has
the most current charter
news, our job board, FAQs
and free webinars.

mastering crucial conversations to achieve alignment, agreement, and execution.

KEYNOTE ADDRESS: Mission Statements – Telling Your Nonprofit’s Story
We are natural born storytellers. But all too often, we in the nonprofit world aren’t good at telling our story. This session will equip
you and your board members to be master nonprofit storytellers and help you cast your vision and mission in ways people will remember! You will learn: The basic components of all compelling stories; How a trip to the supermarket can help you make your story
engaging; What an “elevator pitch” is and why it can quickly become stale; and A really easy way to keep all your communications
fresh and “on story”.

BREAKOUT SESSION I
TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 17th
9:00 – 9:50am
1.1 GreatBoards - Standards for Effective Governance, Part 1
PALMETTO BALLROOM
Kate Essex, Charter Board Partners, offers two back-to-back sessions
which dive deep into their 6 standards for Effective Charter School
Governance: Focus Relentlessly on Student Achievement, Ensure Exceptional School Leadership, Commit to Exemplary Governance, Act
Strategically, Raise and Use Resources Wisely, and Maintain Legal and
Regulatory Compliance. Boards will explore why it is important to review indicators of student success regularly to measure progress toward
school goals, build an effective partnership between the school leader
and board, and collaborate with the school leader each year to establish
his/her annual goals.
>>Kate Essex is the Chief Program Officer at Charter Board Partners.
1.2 Parent Power - Advocacy Workshop, Part 1
CAROLINA A
Parents and educational choice advocates will come together for a day
of training around grassroots advocacy. In the first hour we will discuss
national trends in school choice policy and big wins families have been
able to impact and benefit from.
>>Brendan Steinhauser is the co-founder and partner at Steinhauser
Strategies.
>>Shaunette Parker is the Director of Mission and Strategic Coaching for
the Public Charter School Alliance of SC.
Is “just right” text getting all of your students to grade level and beyond?
Time is too fleeting and too precious to rely on a collective hunch about
best practices in reading instruction! Learn how K-2 teachers can use
multiple text experiences during the “learning to read” years and boost
reading trajectories and share responsibility for ensuring all students
can read grade level text accurately, fluently, and with understanding.
In this session we will address what school leaders need to know to
help K-2 teachers share the responsibility for ensuring that ALL students
entering grade three can read with accuracy, fluency, and understanding. Special emphasis will be on use of multiple text experiences including
digital media to boost each student’s reading trajectory. >> Stacey Leitzel is the Professional Development Manager with Superkids by Zaner-Bloser.
1.4 What Everyone Ought to Know About the New South
Carolina Mathematics Standards, Part 1
CAROLINA D
Participants will gain an understanding of the expectations of the new
South Carolina College-and-Career-Ready Standards for Mathematics
and explore resources and support documents aligned to the expectations of those standards. Learn how to identify which mathematics
standards students in SC are expected to master across the K-12 spectrum, walk away with instructional tools aligned to the new mathematics standards, and access a variety of resources and support document
crucial for successful, seamless implementation of the new standards.
>> Lindsay Boozer is the Secondary Mathematics Education
Associate at the SC Department of Education.
1.5 Bullying, Cyber Bullying and Violence Prevention;
Emerging and Evolving Risks for Schools, Part 1
CAROLINA E
Bullying and cyber-bullying continue to be fast-growing forms of social
cruelty. Educators, administrators, and parents must take this form of
social cruelty serious and understand its implications toward furthering
threats of violence. This program will clearly define what bullying is and
how cyber-bullying and cyber-harassment are similar and in other ways
very different from “traditional” schoolyard bullying. The various ways
cyber-bullying occurs will be defined, and the impact on individuals, the
school community, and society will be examined.
1.7 The Importance of Well-Trained Teachers
CAROLINA G/H
There is consistent evidence showing that teachers are the most important school-based factor in determining learning outcomes, second only
to what children bring to school with them. Yet there remains a marked
deficit in both teacher numbers and teacher training worldwide, which
has an extreme impact on learning outcomes for children. Recognizing
that teacher effectiveness is the most important school-related factor
in a student’s academic success, the goal for administrators is to ensure
their educators have all the resources and opportunities they need to
be at their best in the classroom. GROWING ENROLLMENT?
We can help.
>> Kelly Haydt is an Account Executive with HMH.
1.8 Financing for Charter Schools
DIPLOMAT
SC Community Loan Fund staff will discuss its loan products available to
charter schools for facilities development and planning and implementation for new school development. The session will break down the two
loan types for charter schools: bridge loans and commercial loans. Participants will leave knowing the nuances of each and how to produce a
successful application.
Mobile Modular offers affordable,
relocatable classrooms and comfortable
learning space for your students. Our
classrooms offer a convenient, flexible
solution to better handle ever-changing
student populations.
>> Anna Hamilton Lewin and Patrick King are responsible for
creating strategic partnerships and deploying loans for SCCLF.

>> Cassandra Ingham is a Risk Management Staff Specialist with Utica
National Insurance Group.
1.6 EMO Contracts: Negotiation and Administration
CAROLINA F
The State of SC is the hidden third party in a charter school’s contract
with an EMO. Learn practical ways to avoid problems from the start.
For charter schools that contract for educational services with an EMO,
that contract can be critical. Sponsors are integrating more substantive
requirements relating to EMO provisions into the charter with a strong
basis in SC law to do so. These requirements can be a strength in the
negotiation of an EMO contract, and administration of a multi-year contract. The SCPCSD is taking a proactive approach by using the charter
school contract to require charter schools to meet certain guidelines if
an EMO contract is used.

NOTES
modular buildings
Modular buildings are well suited for school use because they have
flexible layout options and can quickly be installed.
Modular Buildings | Education
Schools worldwide continue to
increase their use of modular
buildings on their campuses
because modular provides
benefits that no other building
solution can offer.
Relocatable buildings supply
quick space that can be
removed as quickly as it was
installed when a project is
completed or space just is
no longer needed. Permanent
modular construction provides
high quality long-term space
with less expense and installed
in a shorter timeframe than
conventional construction.
SECURE.
DURABLE.
FLEXIBLE.

www.SCCharterSchools.org
(800) 691-7133
The fluctuating economy often
forces changes in demographic
factors requiring school systems
to make space adjustments
quickly when space is needed.
Modular construction is a
nimble method for educational
institutions to secure the space
they need.
Whether it’s helping companies grow and
prosper or helping a community do the same,
we are committed to making a powerful,
positive impact. Elliott Davis Decosimo is proud
to support Public Charter School Alliance of
South Carolina.
