REPUBLICAN TICKET!

CAROLYN S. COX, CHAIRMAN
CHAIRMAN’S MESSAGE
REPUBLICAN IDEAS BETTER FOR THE POOR
Star Parker, a former welfare mother, is the author of “Uncle Sam’s Plantation, How Big
Government Enslaves America’s Poor and What We Can Do About It.”
It is the story (and a fascinating read) of how she left the welfare rolls to become a writer
and later founded CURE, the Center for Urban Renewal & Education.
Parker says it was easy to be enslaved by welfare’s promises. Just agree “not to abort
your baby, don’t have a bank account, don’t find a job, and don’t get married” and you
can have welfare indefinitely.
In Parker’s experience, any discussion of personal responsibility was forbidden “because
of the connotation of sin.” She observed, “The tragedy is that when government safety
nets replace natural consequences, the careless poor are effectively chained to the sin that
will keep them in poverty.”
We have all been told that the vast majority of “youths in the criminal justice system come
from single-parent households. Since there is clear evidence that family breakdown
contributes to low academic and employment achievement, propensity for crime, drug
use, and sexual promiscuity, perhaps we should ask why the money spent to alleviate
poverty has discouraged traditional family formation.”
She believes, “If true solutions were ever explored and expanded, left-wing groups that
control all policy discussions surrounding poverty would be obsolete. Actually, if
conservative principles of traditional values and free markets ever took root in our poor
communities, ninety percent of the liberal campaign platform would evaporate.” Let’s
finally count success as fewer people on welfare.
Further, “The education provided by public schools in poor neighborhoods is inferior.” It
is unacceptable, as Condoleezza Rice says that: “I can predict your success by knowing
your Zip Code.”
As for the minimum wage issue, Ms Parker writes, “Mandates for a ‘livable wage’ make
great sound bites on the evening news, but most new laws passed to regulate the business
community to protect the economically challenged end up narrowing their opportunities to
advance.”
It remains morally wrong for the government to take money from some and transfer it to
others. What we forget sometimes is that the cost to the takers is enormous. Welfare
recipients face loss of pride and destruction of basic human values. It’s time for a new
battle strategy in the War on Poverty.
