Sanchez. The site is currently undergoing
the first phase of demolition and awaiting
various permit approvals. While some
remodeling will be done on the property,
it will be so extensive as to leave the
original buildings unrecognizable.
The Center will feature a variety of rental
spaces ranging from 1000 to 25000 square
feet and is approved for a drive-thru.
Plans also include extensive landscaping.
“We are in final negotiations with
restaurants, retail establishments, and
executive office tenants to provide a wellbalanced mix for the Skyway Center,” says
Sanchez. “We are tremendously excited
to be able to improve this excellent piece
of property.”
Bradley Vernon is the developer on the
project and his team is joined by architect
Paul Poirier & Associates and engineers
from the local office of Stantec.
“The main goal of the center is to
ultimately serve as a beautiful community
gateway both to the City of Santa Maria
and its neighbor to the south, Orcutt,”
says Sanchez. “In addition, visitors to the
Central Coast arriving via the Santa Maria
Airport will now have a welcoming and
beautiful center as they enter either town.”

Concert Raises Funds for Little Lorilei
Helping with Medical Expenses
When local drummer Max Triplett first
read an article about a little girl who was
suffering from pancreatitis and about to
undergo a rare surgery, he knew he had
to find a way to help. Why? Because
this little girl is Lorelei Batty, daughter of
Orcutt drum teacher Kyle Batty.
If you live in Orcutt and play the drums,
you probably recognize this name. You
may have even taken lessons from him
yourself. And if you did, you know that
Kyle isn’t just an average drum teacher,
he’s a dynamo. A whirlwind of energy
and positivity that makes his students feel
like they can be rock stars of life.
Max began taking lessons from Kyle
when he was 14 and credits him with
being a valuable mentor during his
teenage years. “He was a big influence on
me when I was younger,” he shares. “He
was just a cool guy to talk to.”
But Max wasn’t the only student of
Kyle’s that felt this way. People from
all over the community have come out
of the woodwork to support the Batty

family during Lorelei’s illness, including
17 year old Evan Hickerson who started
a Go Fund Me campaign for the family
after receiving only one lesson from him.
On September 8th, Lorelei underwent
a 10-hour surgery at UCSF Benioff
Children’s Hospital in San Francisco to
remove her pancreas and transplant islet
cells into her liver. The surgery was a
success and she is now recovering.
It has been a very long year for the
family, which included a lot of driving
back and forth to San Francisco and
other hospitals. Kyle has been unable to
continue lessons, though friends aren’t
surprised that he would put his family
first. Hickerson’s Go Fund Me as well
as Triplett’s October 11th Batty Family
Benefit Concert hope to alleviate some
of the financial stress.
Once he decided that a benefit concert
was the way to go, Triplett teamed up with
Ben Cabreana at O’Sullivan’s Pub. “Ben
and I worked hand in hand on this event
for a couple of months,” he says. “Ben
literally works three jobs and took what
time he had left to put this on with me.
He’s one of the best dudes I know.”
Cabreana, though he was never a
student of Kyle’s, was influenced by his
music and ready to help the cause. The
show filled up quickly with local bands,
including The Bearcats, Beach Technique,
The Dogons, The Ragged Jubilee, and
King Walrus & The Magicians.

of Kyle’s, was one of the first to contact
Triplett. “As soon as I heard about it,
I contacted Max immediately saying I
wanted in on the show. My band is fairly
new to the scene and this is actually our
first show, but there was no way I was
going to miss out on this opportunity
to give back to the guy who helped me
become the musician I am today.”
The Benefit included live performances,
a raffle, and a BBQ spearheaded by
O’Sullivan’s owner Josh Snow. Friends,
former students, and complete strangers
all came out to support the Batty Family,
raising $1300 in all.

Moxie Café
What do you get when you mix a health
conscious microbiologist with an industrial
warehouse? No, that’s not some kind of
weird science joke that no one would ever
get, but it is how the Moxie Café came into
existence. Of course, there was a bit more
to it than that.
Jay Hardy, CEO and Founder of Hardy
Diagnostics, was already running a successful
business with nearly 300 employees when
he got the idea to open a restaurant. As he
tells the story, his wife thought he was crazy.
Her main concern was that he already had
so much on his plate (so to speak).
While his initial idea was to have a
company cafeteria where his employees
could come and have lunch, his vision
soon grew into something for the whole
community. Hardy wanted to help solve the
problem of what he calls a “tragic” lack of
high quality, healthy dining options in the
area and hoped that his restaurant would
not only fill that gap, but become a place
that people could come again and again.
“I wanted it to be like Cheers,” says
Hardy. “A place where everybody knows
your name.”
Hardy found architects and landscapers
and chefs who could also see his vision.
Chef Ryan Gromfin came on board and
designed a menu and recipes that captured
the “healthy but delicious” theme.
“I said, ‘We’re going to do something
different’,” says Hardy. And by different
he meant that Moxie wouldn’t have a fryer
in the kitchen, and would stay away from
MSG and trans fats as well as keep sugars
to a minimum.
“I read every label in the kitchen,” says
Hardy. Because of their dedication to
healthy eating, their menu is full of things
like free range chicken, antibiotic and
hormone free meats, wild caught salmon,
and organic greens. For example, one of
his favorite items, the Harvest Chicken
sandwich, was designed by his wife and
stacks a chicken breast, cheddar cheese,
sliced apples, and a mouth-watering
cranberry aioli between slices of ciabatta or
multi-grain bread.
The manager of The Moxie Café, Ron
Lovell, had quit his job at the Olive
Garden after seventeen years and started
a web design company from home when
he was approached by Hardy to come and
manage his new restaurant. “Ron is very
extroverted,” explains Hardy. “I think he
was getting tired of sitting at home talking
to the dog!”
Hardy and Lovell were actually connected
before they began working together. Both
of their wives were members of the MOMs
Club when their children were toddlers.
Now those same kids are in their twenties
and Ron, after getting Moxie off to a good
start, is heading back to web design.
“Ron is so full of energy and life,” shares
Hardy. “He would greet every single person
that came through the door. We’re going to
miss him around here.”
The Moxie officially opened its doors in the
spring of last year and has quickly become
a popular spot not just for employees of
Hardy Diagnostics, but for people from
all over the area. They now offer catering
services, on-site conference rooms, and
host live music nights every Thursday and
Friday. The décor is exposed wood beams
and corrugated metal, with a nod to the
aviation history of the Santa Maria Valley,
and the atmosphere is welcoming and
lively. There is no table service, so patrons
aren’t obligated to tip and can still eat well
on a budget. And they, do in fact, remember
your name if you visit often enough.
Classified as Green Businesses, The
Moxie Café and Hardy Diagnostics are
also employee owned. 70% of the shares
were sold to an Employee Stock Ownership
Program (ESOP) three years ago and just
last month the remaining 30% were sold
to the employees.
“It’s like having two hundred and fifty
partners,” says Hardy. “I think you view
your job differently when you’re an owner.
Our employees are really engaged and
motivated because they have a future here.”
While this employee ownership was the
ultimate goal, business-wise, he still plans
to stick around for a while because, as he
says, “I really enjoy working with the people
here and this is my baby.”
And just how did Hardy name his
restaurant baby? “The definition of moxie
is perseverance or pluck. Years ago we
began giving out awards to our outstanding
employees. We called these the Moxie
Awards. So we wanted our restaurant
to denote that we go above and beyond
expectations,” he explains. “Plus I just like
the sound of the word!”

Boy Scouts Help Good
Samaritan Shelter

Orcutt Schools Update
iPad Academy Delivers 21st Century Learning to Orcutt Students

It isn’t every day
that you’re able to
implement a new
technology that directly transforms
learning for 1,000-plus students.
That’s what has happened this fall
with the Orcutt Union School District’s
iPad Academy. In association with the
Academy, we have trained 28 classroom
teachers and deployed 1,000 iPads
in classrooms. This is a momentous
initiative, and its story is worth telling.
We begin with the reason for the
Academy. As outlined in this column last
school year, our district’s new Strategic
Plan makes “21st Century Learning” one
of five central goals. The infusion of
current technology in classrooms aligns
perfectly.

Strategic Plan,” says Kirby Fell, the
district’s chief technology officer. “It’s
important for our teachers to have the
opportunity to engage students and
customize learning through the use of
technology like this.”
At the start of the school year, we invited
classroom teachers to apply for the iPad
Academy. We received 46 applications,
and 28 teachers representing all of our
school sites were accepted. The Academy
got under way with a full day of training
on Saturday, September 26. Participants
will have six additional two-hour sessions.
During the initial weekend, our
teachers learned about an assortment of
applications (“apps”) and programs that
they can use with students. These include
the following:
• Book Creator, on which students can
create and illustrate their own stories;
• Educreations, an interactive whiteboard
and screen-casting application on which
students can animate, annotate, and
narrate content, or create a tutorial on
how to solve a problem;
• GarageBand and iMovie, on which
students can develop digital content
for a wide range of class projects and
assignments; and
• Edmodo, which helps teachers manage
assignments and coursework, and interact
with students online in a safe, easy
manner.
“It was an honor to work with the Orcutt
teachers – they were so enthusiastic,” says
Sheila Monger, a classroom teacher from
the Cambrian School District who was
one of the Academy trainers. “It takes a
brave educator to take the initiative and
risk to learn so much so quickly. I have
confidence that each one will take back a
strategy, app idea, or work flow idea that
will immediately and positively impact
their students’ educational experience.”
Carts of iPads have been delivered to
classrooms, and participants now are
busily putting the tablets to use with their
students. Applications and projects vary
by grade level, and teachers are trying out
what they learned in September while also
experimenting with new applications.

Home improvements take the old out and bring in the new. For many do-it-yourself
projects, new wood is installed. Interior wood projects, involve kiln dried products
and can be coated right away. Exterior wood usually comes from a lumber yard or
a large home improvement store and will have moisture or sap. Eventually during
the drying process moisture evaporates and the sap comes out. With new
redwood, it can be up to 14 days before paint or stain. Use a latex stain killer
primer to block any knots from bleeding thru and it also gives the caulk/spackle a
surface to adhere to. Top coat with 2 coats of finish.

“The kids are excited about learning,”
she says. “I’m a little apprehensive
because I’m learning how to use iPads
along with them. But I know this is a
really good thing for the kids.”
Stacey Lovell, who teaches a 3/4/5
combination class at the Orcutt Academy’s
K-8 campus, looks forward to the way
iPads ultimately will change class routines.
“I keep saying that it’s like going from
0 miles per hour to 100 miles per hour in
terms of what we can do,” she says. “We’ll
have paperless days, days when we use the
camera, research days, project days, and
more. I can’t even begin to tell you all we
will do. These iPads are taking kids into
the 21st Century.”
At the end of the year, the iPad Academy
will hold a culminating event at which
teachers and students can share how
iPads have transformed their classrooms
and learning. I fully expect that our
teachers and students – imaginative and
industrious as they are – will have plenty
to talk about.
