our HiStory
The Alabama Kidney Foundation has a rich history of serving Alabama’s kidney patients
beginning in 1975. At that time life was extremely difficult for kidney patients. Few outpatient
treatment facilities were available and the costs of treating kidney disease were enormous. With the
demand for treatment far exceeding the medical community’s capacity, real life or death decisions
about who would receive dialysis and who wouldn’t were being made.
Dear Friends and Supporters:
What would you do if the person you were speaking to confided he was choosing to die rather than watch his
family come to financial ruin because of the costs of his dialysis treatments?
In the early 1970s a kidney patient named William E. Rowe listened as a fellow patient recited the above story
to him from a hospital room. I’m not sure how we would have responded but we know how Mr. Rowe did.
Faced with the knowledge that people were dying, not because of kidney disease, but because of the financial
hardships it places on a family, Mr. Rowe founded the Alabama Kidney Foundation to help Alabama’s kidney
patients.
It’s been 39 years since the Foundation was founded and ample time for an organization to change and evolve.
But, surprisingly, the Foundation has remained very true to Mr. Rowe’s original vision of an organization that
cares about the patients.
In its early years, a handful of generous people would gather in Birmingham to pool their monies to help as

many kidney patients as possible. In 2014, the Foundation’s financial assistance budget exceeded $885,000
and provided assistance to thousands of kidney patients living throughout Alabama. The 5 Kidney Walks hosted
each year help fund the AKF's Financial Assistance Program.
As the Alabama Kidney Foundation continues to expand its presence and services throughout our state, it owes
a great deal of appreciation and thanks to the thousands who chose to support its work. Join us in thanking
The Alabama Kidney Foundation embarked upon its journey to becoming Alabama’s premier
provider of assistance programs for kidney patients during this difficult period of time. It
all began with a conversation between two kidney patients where one made known his
decision to discontinue treating his disease because the costs were so high he feared it
would leave his family destitute. The hopelessness and despair expressed by that one
patient would have far reaching effects. William E. Rowe was the patient who listened
to this tragic revelation and he knew there were other patients facing similar
circumstances. His empathy and concern for other patients drove him to action.
Mr. Rowe gathered a group of volunteers and formed a mission-driven organization dedicated to helping and supporting patients. This compassionate group of
volunteers soon became known as the Alabama Kidney Foundation.

Incredible advancements in the world of kidney medicine have occurred since
those early days, but the despair and helplessness caused by kidney disease
continues to be clearly visible. Alabama has an unusually high occurrence of
kidney disease, ranking fifth in the nation. Today more than 8,000 Alabamians seek dialysis treatments three times a week simply to sustain life.
The Alabama Kidney Foundation, founded to assist kidney patients, has a
39 year history of serving Alabama’s kidney patient population. Today, the
Alabama Kidney Foundation stands alone as the only state-based organization dedicated to assisting kidney patients and each year touches the lives of
thousands of Alabamians.

Daily Living Needs
Funds raised throughout the year help provide financial assistance to meet daily living needs for kidney patients. Through the Daily
Living Needs (DLN) program, social workers submit applications for patients to receive up to $300 per year to help cover the
expenses of living such as electricity, gas, water bills and more.
Transportation Assistance
The need for transportation to and from a dialysis clinic three days a week, every week, can pose a challenge for kidney patients. Many
patients need to arrange for alternate transportation to get to treatment, and the expenses add up quickly. Transportation assistance
funds are offered to a broad range of patients in great need of help with the high cost of travel to their respective dialysis clinic.
Qualifying kidney patients may receive reimbursement for some of their travel expenses through two programs: CNTRTAP and
ATAP.
Critical Need Treatment Related Transportation Assistance Program (CNTRTAP)
Through CNTRTAP, the AKF provides transportation assistance funding to Alabama’s sickest and poorest kidney patients for
life-sustaining dialysis treatments. Guidelines for admittance to this program are very strict.
AL Transportation Assistance Program (ATAP)
This program provides transportation assistance to a broader range of patients who, while not qualifying for admittance to CNTRTAP,
are still living below the poverty level and are in great need of help with the high cost of travel to dialysis three times a week.
eduCation
The Education Program addresses three community needs: patient education, public education and organ donation awareness.
The Patient Education Program includes an array of printed resources and annual Patient Education Conferences held throughout
the state. In 2014, Patient Education Conferences were held in Birmingham, Huntsville, Mobile and Montgomery.
Support ServiCeS
The Support Services Programs strive to help patients cope with their life circumstances by reaching beyond traditional knowledgebased patient education and helping them develop problem-solving skills, improve self-sufficiency and apply their knowledge in
real-life situations. Support Services include pediatric kidney camps, dialysis center activities and stuffing holiday gift bags for the
holidays.
Stocking Stuffers
For many of Alabama’s kidney patients, the holiday season is not a joyous occasion like it is for most. Dialysis treatments are
required regardless of the time of year, or whether a patient wishes to simply enjoy the holidays with loved ones. The financial
strain of the year’s medical bills can seem cumulative during the holidays, when many patients and their families are unable to give
as they wish as a result of ongoing expenses. Each year, the AKF provides a gift to kidney patients in the state of Alabama to lift
spirits during this special time of the year. Volunteers gather at our annual “Stocking Stuffer” events in all four regions and assemble
special gifts for social workers to distribute to their patients. In 2014, the AKF provided over 6,800 blankets!

FinanCial aSSiStanCe
The AKF’s Financial Assistance Program provides help for low-income dialysis patients in the state when they experience financial
emergencies. This includes assistance with utility bills, prescription medications, and transportation to and from life-saving dialysis
treatments – to name a few. There are income guidelines for both the Daily Living Needs and Transportation Programs. The income for a
one-person household must be $1,000/month or less. For a family, the household income must be $1,200/month or less.

HuntSville reGional oFFiCe
The Huntsville Regional Office had an exciting year. In October of 2014, we hosted the third annual Huntsville Patient Education
Conference at the EarlyWorks Museum. Attendees became more knowledgeable on featured topics, which included: Home
Therapy Options; Transplant Waiting List; the Importance of Compliance; Access Care and Healthy Eating. In November, Stephanie
Lowe joined the team as the Regional Director for Huntsville and the surrounding counties. She has been working to get to know
all the incredible volunteers in the region and raise funds and awareness for the AKF in North Alabama. Both our walk leadership and walk day of committee growth has increased awareness and affinity for the AKF in the area, which is critical for future
financial growth. In December, the Huntsville Regional Office had our second annual Stocking Stuffer event at UAH, where 30+
volunteers worked to wrap over 1,000 blankets for dialysis patients in North Alabama. The Huntsville 2014 Kidney Walk raised
over $48,000 to help provide services to kidney patients and their families in the North Alabama area. Over 200 attendees, sponsors and numerous activities celebrated the success of the 2014 campaign at the Kidney Walk. Thank you to all of the AKF volunteers, including Walk Chair Gary Dobbs, in North Alabama for making 2014 a great year!

The Birmingham Regional Office enjoyed its second anniversary in 2014! The annual Patient Education Conference was held in
October at St. Vincent’s Bruno Conference Center. Attendees became more knowledgeable on featured topics, which included:
Motivation to Keep Fighting Kidney Disease; How Getting a Kidney is Changing; Nutrition and the Affordable Care Act and other
changes to healthcare legislation. In December, volunteers gathered for the annual Stocking Stuffer event. More than 2,000
dialysis patients were presented with blankets prepared by our volunteers. Mayor William Bell and his nephew, Michael Bell,
served as Birmingham’s 2014 Kidney Walk Co-Chairs and helped raise over $180,000 to help provide services to kidney patients
and their families in Central Alabama.
MontGoMery reGional oFFiCe
The Montgomery Regional Office hosted its third annual Patient Education Conference in the fall of 2014 at the Baptist Medical
Center South’s Montgomery Cardiovascular Institute. Attendees became more knowledgeable on featured topics, which included:
Compliance; Getting a Transplant; Understanding the Affordable Health Care Act and a Patient’s Panel. In December, volunteers
gathered for the annual Stocking Stuffer project. 1,200 dialysis patients were presented with blankets prepared by our volunteers.
The Montgomery Regional Office also held the second annual Dothan Kidney Walk. Connie Moore served as Dothan’s 2014 Walk
Patient Chair and helped raised $35,000. Ashley Thompson served as Montgomery’s 2014 Walk Chair and helped raise close to
$70,000 to help provide services to kidney patients and their families in the River Region.

Since 1923, the United Way of Central Alabama has helped to increase the organized capacity of people to care for one another
and to improve its community. The Alabama Kidney Foundation is proud to be one of the United Way of Central Alabama’s
partnering agencies.

United Way of Madison County serves those least able to help themselves by uniting volunteers and resources in the community,
and to solve community problems and address education, income, and health needs through our internal initiatives, programs,
and Collaborative Partners. The Alabama Kidney Foundation is proud to be one of the United Way of Madison County’s partnering
agencies.
alaBaMa orGan Center
The Alabama Organ Center is committed to increasing knowledge about organ and tissue donation and transplantation, while
eliminating common misconceptions regarding donation through public and professional education programs. The Alabama
Kidney Foundation and the Alabama Organ Center share the same commitment to organ donation and awareness.
MoBile reGional oFFiCe
STATE OF ALABAMA
The Mobile Regional Office, in collaboration with Mobile Infirmary Medical Center and the University of South Alabama
Medical Center, presented a CME accredited Physician's Education Symposium in September of 2014. The three-part event,
attended by over 100 physicians, featured Dr. Gerald Appel, Director of Clinical Nephrology at Columbia Presbyterian Medical
Center and Professor of Clinical Medicine with Tenure of Title at Columbia University. The symposium was made possible by a
grant from Mallinckrodt Pharmaceuticals, Inc. The Mobile Regional Office also hosted a Patient Education Conference in the fall
and presented topics on Home Therapy Options; Transplant Compliance; New Transplant Guidelines and Understanding Chronic
Kidney Disease. The Mobile Regional Office hosted Stocking Stuffer events in Mobile and Dothan, which provided over 2,000
blankets to dialysis patients in Lower Alabama. Mrs. Jean Stimpson served as Mobile’s 2014 Walk Chair and helped raise over
$100,000 to help provide services to kidney patients and their families in the Lower Alabama area. The Mobile Regional Office
partnered with Edith Mitchell Health Initiative and Mobile Infirmary Medical Center in planning the Get Fit program which aims
to help pre-transplant patients with a BMI over 30, making them ineligible for transplant. Dr. Craig Kleinmann and Dr. John
Nipper, Nephrology Associates of Mobile, will lead the patient oversight and program success data. The Mobile Regional Office
also named its first Board of Advisors. They are as follows, M. Craig Kleinmann, DO, President, Vivian Ballard, Errol D. Crook, MD,
Scott Delaney, Robert M. Huddle, MD, Laura E. Livaudais, R. Sellors Meador, MD, Barbara Nelson, Dawn Rencher, Russ Russum,

The Alabama Kidney Foundation is pleased to partner with the State of Alabama to provide treatment-related transportation
assistance to Alabama’s kidney patients. The State of Alabama reinstated an annual appropriation from the General Fund budget
in 2007 that assists hundreds of patients each year with the transportation costs associated with renal failure treatments.
CoMBined Federal CaMpaiGn and State eMployee CaMpaiGn
The Combined Federal Campaign and the State Employee Campaign provide an avenue where federal and/or state employees can
support the work of the Alabama Kidney Foundation through payroll deductions. The Alabama Kidney Foundation uses the
funds generated by these two campaigns to make a difference in the lives of those it serves.
