Eastern Beaches Council wins
for sale
Eastern Beaches Council has been chosen
Bondi Beach
as the winning name in Waverley and
Randwick Councils’ Name Your New
Council competition.
The Mayors of Waverley and Randwick chose
this name after assessing the results of 349
submissions from the community.
Of the 349 entries from the Waverley,
Randwick and Woollahra communities, 19 per
cent chose Eastern Beaches Council as their
preferred name for the merged council. This
was the most popular choice.
Waverley Mayor, Sally Betts said Eastern
Beaches was chosen due to the community
pride in the beautiful coastal lifestyle residents
in all three council areas enjoy every day.
"Residents rightly pointed out that this area
has the best beaches in Australia in Sydney’s
East," she said.
"It is exciting that the community will now have
a sense of ownership on the name of the
new entity."
Randwick Mayor, Noel D’Souza said the
competition shows that residents across
the eastern suburbs feel a strong sense of
connection with the beach.

roberto cavalli resort 2017
Creative Director Peter Dundas, of Roberto
Cavalli produced an opulent Resort 17
collection steeped in floral bohemia.
A tantalising, heady mix of florals entranced
free flowing garments perfect for an ethnic
sojourn abroad. The lookbook imagery was
shot on location at a picturesque, Milanese
palazzo with enchanted gardens offering plenty
of mystical elements throughout.
An amethyst, lace up, long sleeve, form fitting
maxi starred traditional, embroidered Mexican
florals in shades of lavender, sky and raspberry
which featured on the bodice and sleeves. A
matching, tasselled skinny scarf festooned
the neck. A gold trinket bracelet adorned the
wrist while a punchy, magenta saddle bag in
sumptuous suede concluded the look.
Exotic animal prints fused with bold florals
highlighted a slim tailored pantsuit of 7/8
length. Fuchsia, teal, sugilite and gold shades
were splashed across the free spirited
ensemble. Pewter and claret, platform, T-bar
sandals oozed of seventies style connotations.
Innocence prevailed on a diaphanous, broderie
anglaise, rouleau strap, triangle maxi dress.
Embroidered, undulating serpents in the hue of
sapphire graced the panels of the tiered, floor
sweeping dress. A single strand, gold necklace
was punctuated by various charms including
a sun.
A modern day rock goddess ignited the
secluded garden in an embellished, vanilla
waistcoat details including colourful
embroidery offering artisanal qualities. The
staple silk blouse was paired underneath,
worn plunging to the navel. A floral, dainty,
silk skinny scarf added a poetic edge. Narrow
trousers featured floral appliqué craftsmanship
in a kaleidoscope of colour.
A heavenly white, Chantilly lace mini dress
exuded sheer femininity. Bouffant sleeves,
collarless lace up neckline and flounce hem

brimmed with playfulness. A brightly hued,
braided waistcoat added a jolt of colour.
Terracotta, suede under the knee boots were
a boho luxe addition. A mocha, transparent,
floral maxi with lace up keyhole silhouette
offered the ultimate in festival chic. Chic,
breezy and worn with sheer insouciance this
summer staple will translate well into the
working resort wardrobe.
Cavalli Cat, rockstar glam came in the form
of a shrunken, cornflower blue pantsuit. A
ruffled placket frequented the blouse adding
tenderness to the statement making addition.
Release your inner gypsy in a halterneck, lace
up, crochet and chiffon maxi dress.
Mustard, eggplant, tomato and mauve panels
worked harmoniously together in geometric
shapes. An elasticised waist flowed seamlessly
into a psychedelic, billowy, maxi skirt, the
colour palette comprising of chocolate,
lavender, turquoise, cobalt, fairy floss and
peony pink.
Chiffon from Latin America was emblazoned
with embroidered harlequin motifs. Rippling
wave like motions were accented in shades of
emerald, chocolate, lemon, bubblegum
and watermelon.
A patchwork, oversized, fur chubby in vivid
shades of the rainbow complimented the
colourful maxi dress. A mahogany velvet, wide
band choker and tasselled gold thread skinny
scarf concluded the hippie inspired number,
tousled tresses a must have.
A round neck, long sleeve, evening, floor
grazing column dress in the shade of ivory
featured intricate hand beading including
pearl coloured sequins and a striking, plunging
centre floral motif in the shade of orchid.
For the summer globetrotter, an Ikat, sloping
shouldered cocoon coat worn slouched for
a relaxed fit. Denim shorts and a violet star
spangled shirt brimmed of nonchalance.

Under the knee, denim, platform boots were
bedecked with flowers aplenty.
Peter Dundas declared "Life is already so
difficult. There's no need for fashion to be too
difficult as well."
A captivating display for the luxurious, beatnik,
flower child.

New concept in dementia care in
the heart of the Eastern Suburbs
Do you know someone living with Dementia?
Are you looking for a different type of
care environment to the traditional
Dementia units?
Welcome to a new concept in aged care
and respite care; where the needs of a new
generation of older Australians are recognised
through an innovative and world-leading aged
care services model.
Group Homes Australia is a new concept in
aged care, dementia care - offering a social,
supportive and welcoming environment that
values independence and living life to the
fullest, and feels like home.
If you've explored traditional aged care or
dementia care accommodation options such as
nursing homes, you've no doubt seen firsthand
that many are big, impersonal and institutional.
If you've explored the option of live-in help,
you may have found that it can be expensive,
and not necessarily reliable.
Group Homes Australia’s philosophy is to
challenge traditional ideas of aged care and
provide a better choice for older Australians
living well with dementia.
Group Homes Australia has homes for
people living with dementia and high care
needs. located in Sydney’s Eastern Suburbs.
Each home is expertly designed to be safe
and welcoming, while providing a uniquely
supportive and social environment that
genuinely looks and feels like home.
Group Home’s Australia offers state of the art
care with a homemaker to resident ratio of 1:3
and offers opportunities for older Australians
Tamar Krebs, CEO and Founder of
Group Homes, Australia
to remain in their own familiar suburb, close to
friends and familiar shops and services.
Tamar Krebs, the CEO and Founder of Group
Homes Australia I worked in Aged care for
over 18 years managing nursing homes, and
dementia units. I started to ask myself why we
as a society feel the need to warehouse
our elderly?
If we live our entire life in a community
surrounded by friends and family then why at
a persons most vulnerable point in their life do
we lock them away from society, their familiar
suburb and why do we focus on
their disability?
All this lead to the search for people to be able
to age in a HOME that LOOKS, feels and smells
like a home in a person’s familiar suburb.
Group Homes Australia aims to empower
residents to be as independent as possible
within a safe environment.
The homemakers who are qualified carers
focus on the abilities of residents, rather than
the disabilities. The homemakers support
residents to engage in daily activities that
stimulate interest, personal satisfaction and
well being in a genuine home environment.
All homes utilise soft yet modern décor, a
sensible floor plan, warm and inviting spaces
for socialising and relaxing.
The Vaucluse home is set on a large, north
facing sun drenched block. It offers convenient
and spacious living areas and is a 5 minute
walk to local shops.
Our residences provide living environments
that are safe, pleasant, and enjoyable.
Qualified carers focus on the abilities of
residents, rather than their disabilities. We
support our residents to engage in daily
activities that stimulate interest, personal
satisfaction and well-being, in a genuine
home environment.

Australia second spot in
transparent real estate market
agenda".
In its latest JLL Transparency Index, compiled
every two years, foreign investors accounted
for a record 42 per cent of investment into
the Australian commercial property market in
2015, or about $31 billion. This percentage is
about double the 10-year annual average.
The global index measures transparency
by looking at factors including market data
availability, governance, transaction processes,
property rights and the regulatory and legal
environment across 109 countries.
One life.
Live it.
Cutting-edge design. Unsurpassed lifestyle.
V by Crown Group combines world class apartments, resort style facilities, boutique retail and
an exclusive hotel in Parramatta’s most sought after location. Positioned in the heart of the CBD,
these luxurious 1, 2 and 3 bedroom apartments take in views of Sydney’s CBD and beyond.

Dr Rees said that as capital allocations to
real estate grew, investors were demanding
further improvements in transparency. He
said Australia maintained its position as
the "gateway into Asia Pacific and the fast
growing south-east Asian economies", which is
attractive for non-Asian investors.
"Technology is allowing a more forensic
assessment of real estate market patterns,
allowing for greater analysis of transparency
levels across markets while the rapid growth of
cross-border investment means that investors

Property investor numbers ramp up
A looming election has led to an increase in
property investment as buyers race to beat
changes in negative gearing laws.
The ease of doing business in Australia, with
its stable and transparent regulatory and
legal system, strong ethical governance and
high professional standards, has led to a
significant rise in foreign capital inflows for the
residential and commercial sectors.
The world's 10 most transparent markets
account for 75 per cent of global direct
investment into commercial real estate and
are home to nearly half the world's 2000
largest public companies. Australia has moved
up one notch to second place.
The United Kingdom, Australia, Canada and
the United States hold the top positions, while
the low transparency and opaque categories
are dominated by parts of Africa, Asia and
South and Central America, which are deemed
"development" economies.
The desire for countries that offer good
business conduct was borne out by the recent
revelations of the Panama Papers, which,
property agents and investors say, have led
to mounting pressure for greater real estate
transparency.
Global uncertainty caused by the recent Brexit
vote is also drawing cash out of Britain to
other parts of the world, in the short term,
including Australia, despite the uncertainty
caused by the recent federal election, where
no party has yet claimed victory.
JLL head of Australasian research David Rees
said this had "put the fight against corruption
decisively on the international political
place a big premium on accurate and timely
information," he said.
As capital allocations to real estate
grow, investors are demanding further
improvements in transparency, even among
the world's most regulated real estate markets.
"Transparency is very high in Australia for a
numbers of reasons. In comparison with many
markets in the region, Australia also has a
strong legal framework to define and protect
property rights and an open and established
bidding process," Dr Rees said.

Ovolo Woolloomooloo
launches event space
BY SANDRA TILTMAN
Ovolo Woolloomooloo Hotel at 6 Cowper
Wharf Roadway, Woolloomooloo, just a
short distance from Sydney’s CBD, recently
launched their event space with signature
cocktails and showcased delicious items
from their unique food menu, along with a
fantastic
dessert buffet.
Taking inspiration from the surrounding
suburbs, the versatile event spaces had
names such as “Darlo”, “Paddo” and “The
Cross”. Some of the smaller spaces around
the hotel that offered plenty of character
were named “Glam-A-Rama”, “AC/DC” and
“INXS”.
A large double bed, complete with two
occupants, greeted guests as they arrived
for the launch, which was just the start of
the fun filled evening ahead that included
a ‘high rollers’ room and a few extra
surprises.
Founded in 2002, Ovolo Hotels has
become one of Hong Kong’s largest
independent owner, operator hospitality
firms, providing guests with award winning
interior designs, all inclusive service and
cutting edge technology. The family owned
business now runs five hotels in Hong
Kong and three hotels across Sydney and
Melbourne.

WEEKLY HOROSCOPE
ARIES
Your work-life-family balance is destabilised by someone's
intransigence, much to your frustration. It's up to you to
enforce your priorities, Aries, because nobody else will put
your and your family's needs first.
taurus
Study or training at work may become more of a chore
than an opportunity this week. Perhaps that's a wake up
call that you may want to look into changing your career
direction -- you deserve much more than boredom.
gemini
Debt and money worries could prove stressful, but there's
a chance this week to take a fresh look at your finances.
You're missing an opportunity to increase your income,
perhaps through an under-used creative talent.
cancer
The Cancer New Moon loads you up with optimism and a
sense of possibilities. It's a good week for making long term
plans and for looking ahead with confidence, but arguments
with your partner could mar the tone.

THE BFG
Rating: PG/Running time: 1hr 19mins/Dir: Stephen Spielberg/Cast: Rebecca Hall, Mark
Rylance, Jemaine Clement, Bill Hader, Penelope Wilton, Adam Godley, Ólafur Darri Ólafsson,
Ruby Barnhill/Genre: Adventure, Kids and Family, Fantasy, Blockbuster
Steven Spielberg and his screenwriter for E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial re-team
to adapt Roald Dahl's 1982 novel. Follows Sophie (newcomer Ruby Barnhill),
the Queen of England (Penelope Wilton) and The BFG (Mark Rylance) on an
adventure to capture the evil, man-eating giants who have invaded the
human world. The cast of giants includes Bill Hader and Jemaine Clement.
Not one of your more sociable weeks -- the New Moon
instead encourages you to seek solitude and to enjoy your
own company. Watch out for a situation where your lack of
organisation lands you in hot water.
virgo
Networking and teamwork bring you some good results
at work, but the powers that be will require answers from
you over a risk you took. Lateral thinking and inspired
leadership may not be welcomed.
libra
Good career news should boost your confidence this week,
courtesy of the New Moon. At home, however, tread gently
with a relative who feels short-changed by you and is
seeking more attention.
scorpio
Restlessness makes it difficult for you to concentrate or
focus; you'd much rather be breaking out of your rut and
doing something different. So what's stopping you, Scorpio?
Don't allow fear or new ideas to hold
you back.
sagittarius
Self help and self improvement efforts get a boost from
the New Moon, but don't look too hard for approval from
others. Be your own biggest fan, because criticism from
friends and family is likely to sting.
capricorn
The romantic New Moon casts a rosy glow over the
beginning of the week. Patience wears thin later, however,
and squabbles over who's in control of the relationship could
turn quite spiteful if left to get out of hand.
aquarius
It's a busy working week and you have a lot on your plate.
Fortunately, the New Moon boosts your energy levels and
helps you to get stuck in. Finding time to yourself may be a
struggle though, leaving you tired and a bit jaded.
pisces
Playfulness is a key vibe for you this week, Pisces, and
the more fun you can have the better. Watch out however
for a friend or acquaintance who calls you out for being
irresponsible, probably in order to make themselves
look good.

French social drama stars Vincent Lindon in a Cannes-winning performance
as Thierry Taugourdeau, stuck on the dole and still trying to care for
his family. As Taugourdeau battles the challenges of under- and overqualification for roles, and contends with the tedium of the job centre, he
wonders if there's a light at the end of the tunnel. Eventually landing a gig as
a supermarket store detective, Taugourdeau finds himself the clenched fist
of The Man - busting shoplifters who frequently can't afford their groceries.

TRAVEL CAMERA with John Pond
Choosing the right case
Pic: John Pond
CHOOSING THE RIGHT CASE
As I grow older it becomes harder to move my
luggage around, especially on overseas trips.
The purchase of the correct luggage becomes
all important.
Travelling with one case would be perfect,
but what if it is lost by shipping lines, airlines,
hotels or one of the many that handle it.
Thousands of pieces of luggage go missing
every day. One cannot afford to take the
chance of losing precious medication, battery
charges, cameras etc, so we really do need a
carry/wheel on, that should never leave our
side. Wheels on luggage were a great invention
(why did it take so long?), but now, as my
strength wains, I find that the 2 wheel suitcases
pose a weight and portability problem.
The newer style 4 wheel models glide
effortlessly through airports and take all the
worry away. Don’t buy “cheap” cases, they
have “cheap” wheels that usually don’t do the
job and break down sooner than later. Buy a
well known brand, for a few dollars more they
last a lot longer and do the job so much better.
Attached are photos of two new models from
Paklite that illustrate my idea of the close to
perfect case.
Available in black or turquoise and in three
sizes, the duffels are as lightweight and
stylish as they are practical. The Escape duffle
boasts large capacity with strong and durable
hardware, fabric and components including
a lockable external sleeve pocket, great for
passports and valuables.
The small and medium sizes may easily be
slipped over one’s main suitcase handle by
using the built in cloth handle. This makes
wheeling 2 bags at once a breeze without
weight as the bottom bags 4 wheels glide
effortlessly, especially on airport floors.
Whether old or young, these bags take the
strain out of travelling.
The art of travelling
well in Spain with
Cathay Pacific
Cathay Pacific recently introduced four direct
flights to Madrid and to help you travel well in
Spain here are four tips to get you on your way:
1. Slip into a new time zone – We don’t just
mean the time difference. Expect things to
Friday, July 8, 2016
open later in the morning and social activities
including dining to kick off much later and
carry on into the night. Don’t be surprised if
you find yourself eating dinner at 10pm.
2. Embrace the graze – Instead of a meal at
just one restaurant, enjoy a touring banquet of
tapas. Walk along the street hopping from one
tapas bar to the next, sampling different tapas
at different establishments. One place may be
known for one particular dish or another, so
look out for what the locals are eating.
3. Pucker up – In Spain, greetings are with
two kisses to the cheek, starting with the right
cheek. Generally it’s a light peck but if you are
uncomfortable, a cheek to cheek is acceptable.
With four direct flights a week to Madrid from
Hong Kong and over 70 flights a week from
Australia, you will be travelling well when you
choose to fly with Cathay Pacific. The great
connections mean that the total travel time
(including transfers) is less than 24 hours from
Sydney to Madrid.
Mystical Myanmar –
Reasons to Visit
From temple-dotted plains to golden stupas,
floating gardens to colonial gems, Myanmar
has so much to see and experience. Yet there
is no denying the country is changing. Here are
five of Myanmar’s myriad sights that should
not be missed:
Shwedagon Pagoda:
No journey to Myanmar is complete without
a visit to the magnificent Shwedagon Pagoda
in Yangon. Thought to have been built by the
Mon people during the 6th century, this is
one of the most impressive Buddhist sites in
Southeast Asia and a true religious wonder of
the world. Besides the beauty of the temple
itself, the Shwedagon Pagoda is a fantastic
spot for people-watching, with devotees
making offerings, worshiping and meditating
before the golden stupas.
Inle Lake:
Cruising the waters of this peaceful lake,
flanked by floating gardens and wooden
stilt-houses, is an unmissable experience. The
antics of its famous leg-rowing fisherman,
whose distinctive method can be observed
nowhere else in the world, is a major draw for
visitors to this tranquil oasis in the Shan Hills.
When compared to the bustle of Yangon, Inle
Lake is a place to relax, unwind, and observe
communities and customs little-changed for
thousands of years.
Colonial architecture:
As a result of British rule between 1824 and
1948, and its relative isolation in the years that
followed, Myanmar is home to some of the
finest colonial architecture in the world. As
the country has been opening up to tourists,
development has been inevitable; Yangon
is changing at a rapid pace so my advice to
travellers who want to see Yangon’s unique
heritage buildings is they should visit now.
The right suitcase?
The temples of Bagan:
Where else on earth can you watch the sun
set over more than two thousand temples?
The temples of Bagan are truly unique. For a
truly spectacular view, the temples should be
seen from above – in the luxury of a hot air
balloon. Due to demand, it’s really important
to book the hot air balloon before travelling to
Myanmar, at the same time as booking into a
small group journey or making private
travel arrangements.
Cathay Pacific
Ngapali Beach:
Having explored temples and colonial wonders
in Yangon, cruised Inle Lake and watched the
sun go down over Bagan’s mesmerising plains,
travellers deserve some time to unwind at
the beach.
Few people realise Myanmar shares the same
incredible stretch of coastline as its betterknown neighbour Thailand, with white sand
and the famed azure waters of the
Andaman Sea.
This tranquil coastline and its quaint
smattering of fishing villages is the perfect
way to end a visit to Myanmar.

TALKING
ARTS with Sandra T.
Cirque du Soleil
presents Kooza
MCA showcases
Korean Art
An exhibition that brings together artists
from Australia and Korea is now on display
at Sydney’s Museum of Contemporary Art
Australia, located at 140 George Street,
The Rocks.
“New Romance: art and the posthuman”
is a partnership between the Museum of
Contemporary Art Australia and the National
Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art,
Korea that brings together 18 artists from
Australia and Korea.
Drawing inspiration from science fiction,
consumer technologies, robotics, biology
and social media, the works in this exhibition
encourage us to ask what it means to be
human today, and what it might mean in
the future.
Artists include Rebecca Baumann, Ian
Burns, Hayden Fowler, Siyon Jin, Airan Kang,
Sanghyun Lee, Soyo Lee, Wade Marynowsky,
Cirque du Soleil will arrive in Australia
next month to present Kooza, a death
defying, colourful homage to the
traditions of circus. The national tour
will begin in Sydney on 25 August 2016,
where Kooza will be performed under
the famous blue and yellow Big Top
at The Showring in the Entertainment
Quarter, Moore Park.
Since its premiere in Montreal in 2007,
Kooza has been seen by over 7 million
people around the world and is currently
delighting audiences in Santiago, Chile,
where the season will wrap up on 31 July.
The tonnes of equipment and over 1,000
costume pieces will then be loaded onto
two 747s to make their way to Australia.
In this eighth Big Top show to tour
Australia, Cirque du Soleil rediscovers
its origins with a return to the intimate
and fundamental human elements of
circus, combining thrilling acrobatic
performances with the art of clowning.
We follow “The Innocent” as he takes
a journey of self-discovery through a
comic kingdom of eccentric characters,
electrifying thrills and out of the box
surprises. Presented in a colorful
mélange, Kooza springs open like a
bejeweled toy box to capture the
audience’s imagination.
Moon Kyungwon & Jeon Joonho, Patricia
Piccinini & Peter Hennessey, Kibong Rhee,
Justin Shoulder, Giselle Stanborough, Stelarc &
Nina Sellars, and Wonbin Yang.
“New Romance: art and the posthuman” runs
until 4 Sep 2016 and entry is free.
The international cast of 50 acrobats,
musicians, singers and actors will present
heart stopping feats and laugh out loud
antics to a live soundtrack fusion of jazz,
funk and Bollywood beats.
Kooza’s cast and crew represent twenty
nationalities: Australia, Belarus, Brazil,
Canada, China, Chile, Colombia, France,
Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Moldova,
Mongolia, Netherlands, Russia, Spain,
Trinidad & Tobago, United States of
America and United Kingdom.
From its beginnings in 1984 with a group of
20 street performers, Cirque du Soleil has
grown into a major organisation based in
Québec that provides high quality artistic
entertainment. The company has close to
4,000 employees, including 1,300 artists
from more than 50 different countries.
Kooza is a show the whole family will enjoy.

With light rail construction well underway,
you will have already noticed some
significant changes to our streets. The
four year project is bringing much needed
infrastructure to Randwick City, however,
loss of parking along Anzac Parade and
Alison Road is inevitable.
Randwick City Council is helping residents
and businesses affected by the parking
loss. In the past four months, we’ve created
151 new angled parking spots throughout
Kensington, Kingsford and Randwick, and
more are on the way.
In total we expect to create about 400
new parking spaces as part of the Parking

with light rail construction in the coming
months.
We welcome your feedback on all works

NAIDOC WEEK - SHARING OUR
JOURNEYS
salvos.org.au/hope
13 SALVOS (13 72 58)
NAIDOC Week is a time to celebrate the
contribution of Aboriginal people and
culture to our diverse society.
This year’s theme Songlines - the living
narrative of our nation celebrates the
cultural beginnings of the Dreamtime
that connects Aboriginal and Torres Strait
Islander people to country.
Songlines record the travels of ancestral
spirits who ‘sung’ the land into life and
have been kept alive through shared
sacred stories and ceremonies for tens of
thousands of years.
I encourage everyone to take the
opportunity to explore and celebrate
how, through Songlines, people remain
connected to Country.
The First Nations people used Songlines to
navigate vast distances and map oceans,
waterholes, rivers, birds, animals, plants
and hunting grounds, with the paths
recorded in traditional arts, crafts, dance,
songs and stories
The NSW Government has provided
funding to 200 Aboriginal Community
Organisations to run events this year,
almost double provided last year.
The NSW Government is committed to
partnering with communities to foster
pride in Aboriginal culture and heritage
and NAIDOC Week is an opportunity
for all Australians to come together to
celebrate Aboriginal and Torres Strait
Islander culture and what it brings to our
communities.

Applications for funding through the
2016 Community Building Partnership
program are now open. The NSW
Government is again committing funds to
new infrastructure-based projects that
meet a need in the local community.
These grants are open to local councils
and incorporated not-for-profits
such as charities, sporting, social and
environmental groups that are looking to
build or refurbish essential facilities for
their community.
In previous years, the program has
helped local government and charities
deliver new infrastructure for schools
and community groups, and helped pay
for much-needed improvements to local
sports facilities, parks and clubs. This is
grassroots funding which directly benefits
communities.
Grant applications must have a
minimum value of $2,500 to be eligible
for funding under the program. If your
organisation needs funding for the
building, refurbishment or enhancement
of facilities that deliver positive social,
recreational, inclusive and environmental
outcomes for the community, I encourage
you to apply.
Applications for funding will be open from
Monday 13 June to Friday 22 July 2016.
Projects I funded in 2015;
Clovelly Public School - $10,000

Randwick City adopts 2016-17
Budget and operational plan
for sale
The Budget and Operational Plan are the
key documents that outline Council’s plans,
budget, activities and fees and charges for the
next 12 months.
Key projects include:
• $7.1m for works at Heffron Park, including
remediation, building new amenities at Heffron
South, a netball amenities facility and planning
for the Heffron (Gymnastics) Centre.
• $4m for the Light Rail Support Plan,
including creating more on-street parking and
public plazas.
• $4.2m to upgrade local roads and footpaths.
• $1.4m to build a synthetic playing field at
Latham Park on the border of South Coogee
and Maroubra.
• $800K to extend the Coastal Walkway from
South Maroubra Beach to Malabar Beach.
• Funds to upgrade the boardwalk through
Fred Hollows Reserve, build a stormwater
harvesting system at Maroubra Beach, plant
more native trees and build new cycleways.
Mayor of Randwick, Noel D’Souza, says the
Budget will see major improvements right
across Randwick City as well as continuing to
deliver day-to-day services at a high level.
“Randwick City Council’s 2016-17 Budget will
ensure we maintain existing service levels
to the community as well as continuing to
develop and improve Randwick City through
various Capital Works projects. Best of all, the
Budget will ensure Randwick City remains
debt free.
“Over the past decade Randwick Council has
developed an enviable reputation for sound
and responsible financial management.
“The 2016-17 Budget has been prepared with a
view for ‘business as usual’ activities to ensure
we are able to continue our commitment to
the community now and into the future,” said
Mayor D’Souza.
The 2016-17 Operational Budget was on
exhibition throughout May and public feedback
has been taken into account, including
considerations around:
• Interpretive signs at Kokoda Park
• Funding for public amenities at La Perouse
and Little Bay
• Additional seating at Cromwell Park as part of
the proposed playground upgrades
• Increasing the heating capacity of outdoor
pools at the Des Renford Leisure Centre
• Footpath repairs on the corner of Bligh Place
and Clovelly Road, Randwick.

Construction on a walking track through the
western part of the newly declared Malabar
Headland National Park will commence
later this year after Randwick City Council
approved the $2m project at its Council
meeting.
Mayor of Randwick, Noel D’Souza, says
the Western Walking Track will extend
the popular Coastal Walkway from South
Maroubra Beach to Malabar Beach via a
1.15km boardwalk, complete with ample
seating and viewing areas.
"The Coastal Walkway is an international
attraction but also an important facility for
local residents to use, exercise and access our
beautiful beaches and ocean pools.
“Council’s long-term vision is to create a
continuous walkway along the coast and
the Malabar Headland Western Walkway
completes a critical missing link between
Maroubra and Malabar.
“Importantly, this walkway will also be the
first public formal access to the headland in
over 100 years.
“We’ve worked with the community and
a number of Government stakeholders to
refine the proposal to reduce the impact on
residents while protecting the sensitive and
endangered Eastern Suburbs Banksia Scrub
that exists on the headland. The Western
Walking Track will be a great new addition to
our Coastal Walkway,” said Mayor D’Souza.
The Council resolved on 28 June 2016 to make
a minor change to the proposal by removing
the access link from Ford Road following
feedback from residents.
Vision of coastal walkway - Malabar Headland
Council consulted with local residents earlier
in 2016 about the proposed track. About 500
people had their say through online surveys,
drop-in sessions and workshops with Council.
Of the respondents, 91% said they supported
the project and 85% said they would either
be likely or very likely to use the walkway.
People said they would mostly likely use the
new walkway for exercise (80%), followed by
recreation (77%), greater beach access (38%),
bird watching (29%) and jogging (25%).
Following on from the consultation on the
Western Walking Track, the National Parks &
Wildlife Service (NPWS) has this week released
plans for an eastern walking track around
Malabar Headland to be known as the Boora
MERRYLANDS
Point Track.
The proposed walking track would provide
formal public access to the eastern section of
Malabar Headland National Park and link with
the Western Walking Track giving people the
options of coastal walk as well as a walking
loop around Malabar Headland.
