FRIDAY 17th JUNE 2011
FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Dear Parents
The Mercy College Chapel of St Brigid looked resplendent last Friday
evening in celebration of the Sacrament of Confirmation for our fiftyone young Mercy students. The Chapel was filled to overflowing with
students, staff, families and friends to witness this wonderful
occasion. Everyone can be proud of their contribution to such a
special event. The annual Confirmation Mass is an important
celebration in the Mercy calendar and this year it was particularly
pleasing to see the participation of the JLC staff and students
performing in the choir, senior students receiving the sacrament and
ex-students performing acolyte duties. Also, there were many exstudents acting as sponsors for the Confirmation candidates making
this ceremony truly representative of the whole Mercy community.

HOUSE OF YEAR SIX
REPRESENTATIVES
This week, the two Year Six classes had a visit from Mr Luke
Simpkins, Federal Member for Cowan. We re-enacted a debate
about the Australian Youth Employment Bill for 16 – 21 year olds in
the Community Hall which was set-up to replicate the House of
Representatives in Canberra.
A huge ‗thank you‘ to all involved with the Confirmation ceremony – it
was, as usual, a wonderful celebration of all that our faith, our
College and our community have to offer.
SLC STUDENTS
It has been good to have our Year Ten, Year Eleven and Year
Twelve students back at school this week after their fortnight of
exams and assessments. Staff with SLC classes are currently
working very hard to ensure that the results are returned to the
students as soon as possible. If there have been poor exam results
or assessments which are not ‗up to scratch‘, parents may be
contacted by teaching staff in the next week or two.
A reminder that although there are formal teacher-parent meetings
planned early in Term Three, if parents have any queries and/or
would like to contact staff, they are encouraged to do so via email to:
[email protected]) or [email protected]
(and we will forward it to the appropriate teacher) or by telephone
(9247 9247).
Best Wishes
Dr Tony Curry
Principal

JUMP ROPE FOR HEART IN
THE JLC
Last Friday, students in the JLC participated in Jump Rope for Heart.
Ms Helen Cromie (State Coordinator) from the Heart Foundation
visited to speak to us about staying fit and healthy and what we can
do to support the Heart Foundation. ‗Hearty‘ the mascot also visited
giving lots of ‗high fives‘, hugs and waves. Students were asked to
wear red to show their support and it was fabulous to see so many
students and teachers getting involved.
Thanks go to Fr Sam, the staff, students, sponsors and parents who
were involved in the Confirmation Mass. Also, thanks go to Mrs
Janice Smith for helping with the organisation and to the JLC Choir
who sang beautifully at the Mass.
Mrs Wendy Watzek & Ms Allison Thomason: Year Six Teachers
Throughout the day students participated in skipping workshops and
had the chance to skip with friends in their year level. A group of Year
Six students formed a ―demo‖ team and spent lots of their lunchtimes
practising tricks. They showcased their skills on stage at our special
Jump Rope for Heart assembly. Individual, partner and group tricks
were performed and some of the favourites were ‗the pretzel‘, ‗double
unders‘ and ‗egg beater‘. Although they were very nervous they had
a fabulous time and really enjoyed having the crowd cheer for them
and sing along with the songs. Congratulations to all of the students
who formed the ‗demo‘ team – it was fantastic!
We raised over $500 from the free dress donations, skipping rope
sales and raffle. I will be very proud to present it to the Heart
Foundation on behalf of Mercy College Junior Learning Centre.

YEAR NINES – MAKING
GOOD LIFE CHOICES
SYNERGY EXCURSION TO
SCI-TECH
During the Pastoral Care period last Friday, the Year Nine and Year
Ten students had a guest speaker, Ms Jade Lewis speak to them
about making good life choices, with particular reference to illicit
drugs.
Jade is a motivational speaker who travels around Australia with her
husband Tristan, using their own personal testimonies and real life
lessons to teach young people about the dangers of drugs and the
value of making smart, educated life choices. Jade‘s journey is an
emotional and inspiring one, and she used her story of being a once
Need to solve a mystery? Well, with Mercy‘s Gifted and Talented
students you are on your way.
Last Wednesday, the Years Seven, Eight and Nine Synergy students
explored the wonders of Science and discovery at Sci-Tech
Discovery Centre. The day involved a mesmerising trip into the
galaxy in the Horizon Amphitheatre, an electrifying high voltage
demonstration that really made their hair stand on end and along with
some free time in the main exhibit, students also tried their hands at
detective work in the Whodunit Mystery where they hunted for clues
and evidence to solve a number of crimes.
Students had a fantastic day and learnt many new things that they
are eager to take back into the classroom. So watch out Mercy, there
are some eager Einstein‘s heading your way!
NET Ministries is a team of young men and women who are highly
dedicated and motivated to serve within the Catholic Church. The
team members come from a mixture of geographic areas, ethnic and
family backgrounds. They believe that this mix adds to the team‘s
effectiveness in relating to young people.
The Retreat theme focused on Leadership on the first day and
Healthy Sexuality on the second day. Students were involved in
warm-up activities, listened to talks and viewed various dramas and
skits. They then shared stories, opinions and prayed in their small
groups with their group leader. Thank you to the Year Eleven
Religion and Life Teachers, Year Eleven Form Teachers, Mrs Lee
Perks (Year Eleven Coordinator), Nurse Liesa Franchina (Care
Centre Nurse) and Ms Lucinda Nolan (Year Eleven Teacher) for
facilitating small groups and assisting with supervision over the two
days.
Our hope is for this year group to continue their faith sharing and we
will pray together as a Year group at Friday‘s Mass in the Chapel.
The way in which our Year Eleven students conducted themselves
over the two days was excellent and a credit to their parents.
Mrs Melissa Cartner: Director of Mission

YEAR ELEVEN RETREAT
This week, we invited the National Evangelisation Team (NET) from
Brisbane to conduct a two-day Retreat with all Year Eleven students.
NET Ministries encounter young people and share their faith in a
simple manner. This approach reaches young people and causes
them to think more deeply about their lives, the way they live out their
faith and the place that God has in their lives.
Edith Cowan University and the University of New South Wales are

communities across Australia.
You are invited to attend a community consultation where the

some initial ideas about issues related to social cohesion in your
community. In this consultation, you can also tell them how you
would like to be involved in the project.
