Our Youth Minister, Emily Brabham, has been with us since this past summer, in the thick of things like Youth Council, Kairos and After Kairos retreats, the Quest and Confirmation programs, SOUPer Bowl collections (another record!), food drives, a ski trip and planning sessions for the summer. Thanks for joining us, Emily, and for your commitment to our youth program! Kate DeVries has been with us since the beginning of December and I, for one, have given up trying to keep up with her! Gratefully she has agreed to share some reflections on our readings during the Lenten season on Sundays. She is also forming small prayer groups for Lent. If you’d like to be part of one or start your own, give her a call or send an email –[email protected]. Give yourselves a treat this coming Saturday, March 8 and come to hear the Irish music group with our parishioner, Mike Macken, during 5 pm mass on March 8. They shared their gift of Irish music with us last year and are returning to do the same. They are awesome. I hope you have heard about and read about our Capital Campaign events that have been taking place. These gatherings with fellow parishioners attempt to give exciting detail to our campaign and to hear and hopefully answer questions that you bring up. It is also a time to get some feedback from you about the project and beyond. Take a look at the remaining dates for the events and at some new Dates we have added. If none of these work, please let me know‐ we’ll look another date. I believe that the Campaign is an excellent project for us to respond to some of our main needs in the parish and for us to continue to be a Gospel people who reach out and offer strong support to others in need. I really hope that everyone will know what the Campaign is and that everyone will be able to be involved in it by sharing from his or her time and/or talent and/or treasure. As one of you put it, we have been given a great gift by those who have gone before us and we have this opportunity to grow that gift and pass in on to those who will come after us. We Gather In Faith…We Give With Love. Please continue to pray for our RCIA candidates and catechumen as they continue their journey to full membership in our Catholic Church. Remember also our students preparing to receive Reconciliation and First Communion. May they all know more deeply God’s unconditional love and unlimited grace. Here’s part of our church lessons, about Angels, as explained by children: “Everybody’s got it all wrong. Angels don’t wear halos
anymore. I forget why, but scientists are working on it.”

ASH WEDNESDAY REFLECTION
By Liturgy Team #1 Marge Branecki, Jude Dumfeh, Maureen Lang, Lisa Young and Sarah Zavala Probably each one of us desires to be good, to do what is right, to do God’s will. But the bottom line is, we are human beings who don’t always get it right. “Be merciful, O Lord, for we have sinned.” Even with good intentions, it can be easy to fall prey to the temptation of being fixated on outward appearances. We can do all the right things, even save the world, but for the wrong reasons. The pharisees were doing the right things for the wrong reasons, but God loves even the hypocrites for God knows the depths of our intentions and no sin is unforgivable. “Rend your hearts, and not your garments” means that we need to go deep within ourselves to examine our hearts and take an inventory. “Now is a very acceptable time” to acknowledge our offenses, and the God who is “slow to anger, rich in
kindness, and relenting in punishment” will hear us and be gracious and merciful. “A clean heart create for me, O God, and a
steadfast spirit renew within me.” Lent offers us the opportunity to be reconciled to God, to reflect on bettering ourselves, to truly examine our hearts and question why we do what we do. When our sincere desire is to please God, all our actions find their true worth and meaning. Make a date with God each day and spend time in conversation and prayer. Challenge yourself to be more like Jesus; reach out to others as an “ambassador for Christ.” LENT 2014
CATHOLIC LENTEN PRACTICES
FASTING AND ABSTINENCE
All Catholics 14 years of age and older follow the discipline of abstinence from all meat on Ash Wednesday and every Friday of Lent, including Good Friday. All Catholics 18 years of age, but not yet 59 years of age, follow the discipline of fasting on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. We eat only one full meal on a Fast Day and other smaller meals necessary to maintain strength and health. ALMSGIVING
This traditional Lenten practice is associated with Fast and Abstinence. Money saved as a result of eating less or from “giving up” is given as alms to others who are hungry. CRS Rice Bowl or the St. Vincent de Paul Society are suggested charities for Lenten alms. PRAYER
During Lent all are called to renewal of our relationship with God through personal prayer. The community has opportunities for Lenten prayer as well: Stations of the Cross
will be prayed at 8:20 a.m. on Fridays THE SACRAMENT OF RECONCILIATION
The Lenten Season of Repentance and Renewal is the most appropriate time for Catholics to confess sin and celebrate absolution. Rite of Reconciliation During Mass
Saturday, March 29 Lent Reconciliation at 9:00 a.m. Reconciliation Service
Monday, March 31 Lent Reconciliation at 7:00 p.m. Individual Private Confession
Saturday morning—9:30 a.m. Saturday evening—4:15‐4:45 p.m. Private Prayer in church each day. One of the goals we as a Parish put in our Prophetic Plan is “To provide spiritual growth opportunities for all adult parishioners.” The article written below is by Barbara Boyd, one of the Spiritual Directors of the parish. Spiritual Direction is a wonderful way to nurture spiritual growth. There is a time for everything…under heaven. Eccl. 3:3 Several years ago, I signed up for an At‐Home retreat here in our parish and I met with a spiritual director once a week for the six weeks of Lent. It was a blessing to have a spiritual companion reflect back to me how she saw God present and active in my life. Our primary relationship is meant to be with God. People who choose to meet with a spiritual director do so because they want to pay closer attention to their relationship with God and explore how it affects their other interactions. The desire to know God is foremost in their heart. The ministry of a spiritual director is to listen with the person, to hear how the Spirit of God is speaking. A spiritual director is not a therapist, but instead a fellow traveler along the journey of life. A question asked by a spiritual companion, as some choose to call themselves, might simply be, “Where do you see God in this difficult situation?” Another might be, “Can you think of a scripture you can pray with as you thank God for this present blessing?” Most people meet with a spiritual director once a month, more often if they desire. All spiritual directors have completed a program to learn how to minister in this capacity. Spiritual directors receive a monetary donation agreed upon by both parties.
I have continued meeting with a spiritual director since my Lenten retreat years ago. It is nice to know that she is a person who prays daily, holds what I share in confidence, and seeks the counsel of God in her life just as I do. Might it be time, during this Lent, to bless your life with spiritual direction? Barbara Boyd SFX has spiritual directors available. Contact Kate DeVries at [email protected] or 708‐352‐0168.

Join a Small Faith Group
You are cordially invited to join a Small Faith Group this Lent. Groups will meet weekly from March 9–April 12 (for a total of 5 sessions), at various times and places, including after some weekend masses. Conversations will be based upon the reflections presented in the Little Black Book (see below). Stop by the Courtyard Room for a 10 minute information session after any of the Masses on Ash Wednesday or next weekend. As groups form, details will be listed on the website: www.sfx‐lg.org. To register, for further information, or to facilitate a group, contact Kate DeVries at [email protected] or 708‐352‐0168. The Little Black Book
Beginning Ash Wednesday, copies of the Little Black book will be available in church. Based upon the writings of Bishop Ken Untener, it is a daily mediation on the passion narrative of Matthew, taken a few verses at a time, complete with explanations, reflections, and inspirational quotes. It asks for 6 minutes a day in reflection and prayer. Whether you are able to join a Small Faith Group or not, please consider praying through the Little Black Book, and adding thoughts and insights to the Lenten Blog, found at www.sfx‐lg.org. 158,068

Collections are running $39,000 behind last year
and almost $66,000 behind budget. We are mindful
that attendance at Mass has been down a bit, likely
due to the harsh weather. Perhaps a few more
parishioners than usual have made the escape to
warmer climates. And, personally, there has been
at least one weekend where I easily convinced
myself that it was just too cold to venture out.

ANNUAL CATHOLIC APPEAL 2014
Typically at this time of year we are invited to participate in the Cardinal’s Annual Catholic Appeal, either through a direct mail solicitation or through an invitation from Father John at a Sunday Mass. Please know that St. Francis Xavier is exempt from participating in the Annual Catholic Appeal in 2014 as we are undertaking our own Capital Campaign. You will be hearing a lot more about the Capital Campaign in the weeks to come. In addition to exciting projects and enhancements at our own Parish, this Campaign will include a component of outreach to St. Agatha and Ascension‐St. Susanna, two parishes which are amongst the many that benefit from the Annual Catholic Appeal each year. Of course, if you wish to respond to the direct mail solicitation for the Annual Catholic Appeal, please do so. Please know, however, that locally we will not be asking you to support the Annual Catholic Appeal in 2014. St. Francis Xavier School

The Word of the Lord has a message for children as well as adults. Children’s Liturgy of the Word offers the children an experience to hear the scripture in words that they can understand. Here at St. Francis we are fortunate and proud to have adult volunteers and Presiders of Liturgy who journey with our children so that they can experience the Word of the Lord with a message that is relevant and fitting for them. Our Saturday evening 5:00 p.m. Mass offers the opportunity for children in Grades Kindergarten—Fourth to experience hearing and reflecting on the Word of the Lord in a way that is an empowering experience. Children in these grades are invited to follow their Reflectors of the Word to a prayer space away from the gathered assembly to hear the Scriptures in words they can understand. WEDNESDAYS March 5

TO FAMILIES
Dear families,
With this letter, I wish, as it were, to come into your homes to speak about an event which will take place at the Vatican this coming October. It is the Extraordinary General Assembly of the Synod of Bishops, which is being convened to discuss the theme of “pastoral challenges to the family in the context of evangelization”. Indeed, in our day the Church is called to proclaim the Gospel by confronting the new and urgent pastoral needs facing the family. This important meeting will involve all the People of God—bishops, priests, consecrated men and women, and lay faithful of the particular Churches of the entire world—all of whom are actively participating in preparations for the meeting through practical suggestions and the crucial support of prayer. Such support on your part, dear families, is especially significant and more necessary than ever. This Synodal Assembly is dedicated in a special way to you, to your vocation and mission in the Church and in society; to the challenges of marriage, of family life, of the education of children; and the role of the family in the life of the Church. I ask you, therefore, to pray intensely to the Holy Spirit, so that the Spirit may illumine the Synodal Fathers and guide them in their important task. As you know, this Extraordinary Synodal Assembly will be followed a year later by the Ordinary Assembly, which will also have the family as its theme. In that context, there will also be the World Meeting of Families due to take place in Philadelphia in September 2015. May we all, then, pray together so that through these events the Church will undertake a true journey of discernment and adopt the necessary pastoral means to help families face their present challenges with the light and strength that comes from the Gospel. I am writing this letter to you on the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord in the Temple. The evangelist Luke tells us that the Blessed Mother and Saint Joseph, in keeping with the Law of Moses, took the Baby Jesus to the temple to offer him to the Lord, and that an elderly man and woman, Simeon and Anna, moved by the Holy Spirit, went to meet them and acknowledged Jesus as the Messiah (cf. Lk 2:22‐38). Simeon took him in his arms and thanked God that he had finally “seen” salvation. Anna, despite her advanced age, found new vigour and began to speak to everyone about the Baby. It is a beautiful image: two young parents and two elderly people, brought together by Jesus. He is the one who brings together and unites generations! He is the inexhaustible font of that love which overcomes every occasion of self‐absorption, solitude, and sadness. In your journey as a family, you share so many beautiful moments: meals, rest, housework, leisure, prayer, trips and pilgrimages, and times of mutual support...Nevertheless, if there is no love then there is no joy, and authentic love comes to us from Jesus. He offers us his word, which illuminates our path; he gives us the Bread of Life which sustains us on our journey. Dear families, your prayer for the Synod of Bishops will be a precious treasure which enriches the Church. I thank you, and I ask you to pray also for me, so that I may serve the People of God in truth and in love. May the protection of the Blessed Mother and Saint Joseph always accompany all of you and help you to walk united in love and in caring for one another. I willingly invoke on every family the blessing of the Lord. From the Vatican, 2 February 2014

FAIR TRADE COFFEE??
The coffee sold at St. Francis Xavier is purchased from Equal Exchange Fairly Traded. There is alot behind this coffee. “We work closely with our farmer partners, year after year, to better understand each other’s needs. The result is a trusting relationship‐and delicious coffee.” Beth Ann Caspersen, Quality Control Manager Fair Trade builds right relationships between buyers and sellers that are rooted in the principles of human dignity and solidarity. Fair Trade:  Respects human dignity  Promotes the common good  Advances economic justice  Empowers disadvantaged people  Connects us with the people who create the things we buy  Cultivates global solidarity The Catholic Relief Services Fair Trade Program creates opportunities for us to bring these core values of our faith to bear on the choices we make as consumers—choices that have the power to lift our brothers and sisters out of poverty. Effort is made to see that these coffee farmers are given a fair wage!!! ST. VINCENT
DE PAUL SOCIETY The St. Vincent de Paul Society’s meeting take place on the first Monday of the month at 7:00 p.m. in the Rectory Courtyard Room. “In a time of deceit telling the truth
is a revolutionary act.”
George Orwell In a recent issue of the New York Review of Books (July
11, 2013), Steve Coll, staff writer for The New Yorker,
author, and Dean of the Columbia University Graduate
School of Journalism, reviewed, The Dispensable Nation:
American Foreign Policy in Retreat, by Vali Nasr, who
was in the State Department as senior advisor to Ambassador William Holbrooke. In the article and the book it is
pointed out “how our foreign policy has been militarized”
and “how diplomacy has too often been assigned a subordinate role as the civilian arm of expeditionary armies.”
Far too many U.S. Ambassadors have been assigned to
“negotiate rights of way and logistics lines for the Pentagon during the past decade and not enough time to human
rights, voter enfranchisement, disease eradication and
economic growth in the Middle East and elsewhere.”
An example of this is General David Petraeus who was
overall commander of U.S. forces in the Middle East and
Central Asia, field commander in Afghanistan, and finally was director of the Central Intelligence Agency
when he resigned in disgrace after the discovery of an
affair with a journalist. “In Nasr’s experience, Petraeus
regarded diplomacy merely ‘as a useful tool for getting
governments around the world to contribute soldiers and
money to the Afghan war. It is not a solution to the war,
but its facilitator.’”
Such ideas are within the theories of Carl von Clausewitz,
the German soldier and military theorist, whose book, On
War, which was written after his experiences fighting
Napoleon in the early nineteenth century, is studied at
West Point. Clausewitz states, “War is the continuation
of politics (or policy) by other means.”
Unfortunately, it appears that this may be the view of our
government when it comes to diplomacy and what we
like to call our efforts to make peace. Or, in the words of
George Orwell and the “double speak” of the novel,
1984, “War is Peace”.

Please send a check with your name, number of guests and total amount to: Gigi Callaway, P.O. Box 525, LaGrange, IL 60525. Reservations and payment must be received before March 12. Taizé Prayer is contemplative and most importantly communal, combining simple repetitive melodies that are sung by all, prayerful silence, scripture reading and intercessory prayer. This prayer can promote a kind to inner unity of person, allowing the spirit to be more open and attentive to what is essential. It is our hope that you will join us, especially at this time when our world is much in need of prayer. A note from the Spirito! Singers Spirito! Singers Bravura ensemble is honored to be participating in your 9:00 a.m. service on March 9! Thank you so much for welcoming us into your church home. Spirito! Singers is an exceptional choral organization based in the Western Suburbs with rehearsals held in both LaGrange and Elm‐
hurst. Three ensembles include: Bravura, young women 9th ‐12th, Ragazze girls, 5th – 8th grade, grade of Elmhurst and of LaGrange, and the Men of Spirito!, men 18 years old and up. Auditions for our
2014-2015 season will be held from April 15 through June
15. Auditions will be held in LaGrange and Elmhurst. Please call
630-581-5440 to schedule an audition or for more information. Please mark your calendar for the Spirito! spring concerts, Lean on
Me, at 7:30 pm on Friday, May 16 and on Saturday, May 17 at the Elmhurst Christian Reformed Church in Elmhurst. For more information about our concerts, audition information and to listen to the inspirational music of Spirito! visit our website at www.spiritosingers.org or call 630‐581‐5440. BAPTISMS

THE RITE OF CHRISITAN
INITIATION OF ADULTS (RCIA)
Today at the noon Liturgy, the Catechumens and Candidates will sign their names into the Book of the Enrollment of the Elect. By signing this Book, the Catechumens and Candidates will publicly express their desire to receive the Sacraments of Initiation at the Easter Vigil. By witnessing this Rite of Election, our Parish community acknowledges their desire to make a faith commitment to Jesus in the Catholic Church. After the Liturgy, the Catechumens and Candidates will proceed to Holy Name Cathedral for the official enrollment of their names into the Book of the Elect for the Catholic Church of the Archdiocese of Chicago. Please keep our Catechumens and Candidates in your prayers as they continue to prepare for receiving the Sacraments of Initiation at the Easter Vigil.
FOR YOUR CONSIDERATION
We have many requests come to St. Francis for assistance. Below are some organizations that are in need as you consider making charitable donations, or consider volunteering your time: LOST AND FOUND
The Lost and Found cabinet located outside the church restroom is emptied each month. Please check it if you think that you have left something in church. In the upcoming week, items in lost and found will be brought to the Community Nurses’ Resale Shop. Misericordia Candy Days will take place Friday and Saturday, April 25‐26. Many volunteers are needed in the Greater LaGrange area to collect and raise awareness for this wonderful organization. This is a great service opportunity! Please consider donating your time.
