Britain’s favorite cake
What is Carrot Cake?
Carrot Cake has a soft texture and the carrots enhance the flavour, texture and appearance of the cake. There
are a number of different recipes, and while some include nuts such as almonds or walnuts, others add raisins
or fruit such as chopped apples or pieces of pineapple. Carrot Cake is most often topped with a cloud of cream.
Origin
Carrots have been used as a cake ingredient for centuries, and the
‘The Oxford Companion to Food’ confirms this. Indeed they’ve
been part of sweet cakes and puddings since the medieval period.
It is perhaps because the British have such a sweet tooth that
they’ve taken the Carrot Cake very much to heart.

versatility - Shape your Carrot Cake any way you want to – in loaves, cup cakes or pies.
In fact, the Carrot Cake really became widely popular there during
World War II, when the British were obliged to save costs and
ration staple ingredients like sugar. Over the years, it has become
part of the national fabric to the point where it was voted the
nation’s most popular cake in 2011.
Consumption habits
The Carrot Cake is the typical cake served at ‘tea time’, that
venerable British institution. The nation stops for their cup of tea
around 4 to 5 o’clock in the afternoon, and the Carrot Cake is the
perfect accompaniment to go with it. Of course you can eat it all
day round.
It is the quintessential ‘must have some in the home’ cake – just
perfect for that occasion when you feel like something sweet.
“The secret of my recipe for a delicious carrot cake is
to add orange zest in the batter and I use walnuts.”
