2014 NAPAT NATIONAL AWARD WINNERS
ANNOUNCED IN D.C.
The winners of NAPAT’s 2014 National Awards were announced at the Kennedy Center during the National Partner’s
11th Annual Conference and the KCACTF National Festival during the weekend of April 17 – 19 in
Washington D.C.
EXCELLENCE IN CLASSICAL ACTING: The Classical Acting Award was presented to Emily
Nash, an MFA Performance candidate from the University of Idaho. Given in cooperation with the renowned
Shaw Festival in Canada’s Niagara-On-The-Lake, Ontario, this award consists of an expense-paid summer
residency at the Festival and includes training in voice/dialect, Alexander technique and scene study, plus
attendance at rehearsals and Festival productions. Emily was selected at the Irene Ryan National Acting
Scholarship Auditions by Shaw Festival Executive Director Elaine Calder and Partners Joyce Cavarozzi
and James Hatfield. She portrayed Masha in a scene from Chekhov’s Three Sisters. Emily’s mentor at U.
Idaho is Kelly Quinnett.
The 2014 First Alternate for this Award is Jake Lozano, a BFA student from the University of Oklahoma. His mentors were
Rena Cook, Judith Pender and Tom Orr. (A First Alternate is selected for each National Award and, in the event the winner is unable to
attend the award residency or workshop the Alternate will be invited instead.)
EXCELLENCE IN THEATRE DESIGN: Ethan Hartman from the University of Oklahoma received the Design Excellence
award for his scene design for Coram Boy. This award is co-sponsored by the Korean National University of the Arts (KNUA) and
consists of an expense paid week at KNUA in Seoul, Korea attending theatre design and traditional arts classes, visiting design studios,
attending theatre performances and other cultural experiences in Seoul. He will be accompanied by Partner Lin Conaway who, along
with Dr. Andrew Gibbs selected the winning design. Ethan’s mentor at U. Oklahoma was Jon Young. (See separate article on KNUA in
this Newsletter.)
The Design Excellence First Alternate is Meg Hannah from the University of Hawaii, Manoa, selected for her scene design for
Thread Hell. Meg’s mentor was Joe Dodd.
PLAYWRITING EXCELLENCE: The Playwriting Excellence Award was presented to Edward
Precht a recent graduate of College of Charleston’s Theatre Department. His winning play Bread and
Circuses will be performed at College of Charleston in the fall. This award is co-sponsored by the
College of Fine Arts at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas and consists of an expense-paid trip to
SCRIPT: A Practical Workshop held at UNLV in early June. The workshop conducted by Sean Clark,
Randy Feldman and Julie Jensen is a week-long intensive creative environment in which writers meet to
generate original work as plays, screenplays, and other dramatic media. Edward’s mentor at College of
Charleston was Beth Lincks. KCACTF Artistic Director Gregg Henry graciously included Edward in the
playwriting activities at this year’s national KCACTF National Festival.
The First Alternate for Playwriting Excellence is Jordan Monille of Texas State U., San Marcos. He
was selected for his play Love Norman and his mentor was Jim Price.

2014 memberships in NAPAT.
NAPAT ANNUAL CONFERENCE
NAPAT’s annual Conference in Washington D.C. (April 17 – 19, 2014) was well attended with more than twodozen Partners registered and in attendance. Things kicked off on Thursday evening with an optional performance of
Arguendo at the Woolly Mammoth Theatre. Friday afternoon NAPAT hosted a reception at the River Inn for Partners,
the KCACTF National Committee, members of the Board of the College of Fellows and some special guests of the
Kennedy Center. NAPAT was especially pleased to have Shaw Festival Executive Director Elaine Calder as a guest.
Later that evening Elaine would join Partner’s Joyce Cavarozzi and James Hatfield at the Irene Ryan National Acting
Scholarship Auditions to select the winner of NAPAT’s Excellence in Classical Acting Award. (See article on page 1.)
All registered Partners had tickets for this event.
On Saturday morning NAPAT hosted its annual Honoree Brunch also at the River Inn. There was an excellent
turn-out which included a number of former honorees.

NAPAT was delighted to recognize three out-standing individuals for the significant contributions each has
bestowed on their community and the American Theatre at large:

Special Resolutions were read and presented to each honoree along with a glass sculpture and the ever-coveted diamondstudded NAPAT lapel pin. Julie Jensen and Robert Buseick and his wife Jan were at the brunch. Marty Bennison’s
widow Lin Conaway was present to accept the Resolution and gifts on his behalf. The full texts of the Resolutions will

THE KNUA CONNECTION
Beginning in 2007 NAPAT began offering its second National Award: Excellence in Theatre Design. Through
her connections with the Korean National University of the Arts (KNUA) Partner Lin Conaway has organized a visit to
Seoul, Korea where the winning student is able to attend design classes at KNUA and partake of other cultural delights
in Seoul. Lin and her daughter Gwyneth ConawayBennison accompany each year’s winner as guides and mentors.
No two trips are alike as each is uniquely tailored to the designer. (A report from the 2013 design winner follows this
article.)
Three years ago KCACTF Artistic Director Gregg Henry offered to include a KNUA student in the design
workshops and activities at the National KCACTF Festival in Washington D.C. This April student Hunzoe Jung came
to Washington for the Festival. In addition KNUA Professor Heesun Ko was also a guest at the KCACTF and Partner
activities.

WRITES OF HER EXPERIENCE AT KNUA
Last Fall Maureen Freedman- NAPAT’s 2013 Design Excellence winner - traveled to Korea with Lin Conaway
and Gwyn ConawayBennison for the KNUA experience. Following is her report:
Dear NAPAT Members - Thank you so much for thinking my work deserved your award at the KCACTF
National competition in April. The opportunity you afforded me to join Lin Conaway and Gwyn ConawayBennison
in Seoul was not attainable otherwise. I so appreciated their time, thought and personal investment in me. I was introduced to local foods, tradition, cultural sites, religious temples, traditional arts and crafts and theatre alongside futuristic
technology.
Most of all I appreciated meeting and talking with the Korean students and people on our adventures. Gwyn’s
personal experience was an added bonus. The exposure to the people and the culture was truly inspiring and a priceless
experience for me to cherish on my personal and professional journey as a designer and person in a fascinating world
of varied traditions.
Thank you hardly seems enough to truly express how grateful I am to you all – not only for the trip itself, but for
your generosity establishing NAPAT in the first instance and investing in me and others in our ever changing industry.

NAPAT BOARD
The NAPAT Board held its Spring meeting in Washington D.C. on Friday, April
16, 2014. Reports were received from Board officers and details will appear in
the minutes which will be posted on NAPAT.net.
In July NAPAT will sponsor two sessions at the ATHE Conference
in Scottsdale, Arizona: A general information session on Thursday, July 24th
and a panel – “LIGHT - The Ethereal Design Element” which is scheduled for
Friday July 25, at 4:00 pm. Co-chairs will be Partner Jeff Koep and John Wolf
of Wayne State. Panel members include Brackley Frayer, Andy Gibbs, James
Hatfield and Jim Wren.
The Board also discussed the venue for its October meeting. At this
time both New Orleans and San Diego are under consideration. Board members pay their own way to meetings. All NAPAT dues and donations go to the
student scholarship programs.
In Memoriam: Carole Brandt, Ph.D. - 1937—2014
Earlier this spring Partner Carole Brandt passed away. The following is an excerpt
from the Memoriam written by Kathryn Robinson which appeared in the Kennedy
Center April 2014 Playbill. The full text will appear on the NAPAT.net web-site.
Dr. Carole Brandt—artist, mentor, administrator, academic, role model,
irresistible force, inspiration and friend. With a career that spanned 58 outstanding
years, Carole’s record of accomplishments is vast. After nine years as a high school
drama teacher, she moved into higher education and made significant contributions in
her posts at University of Iowa, Illinois State University, Illinois Wesleyan University,
Idaho State University, University of Florida, The Pennsylvania State University and
Southern Methodist University.
In a world that had proffered few opportunities for women leaders, Carole
burst through the glass ceiling with a level of excellence that did not permit her
being ignored. She led programs and commissions, departments and organizations.
By the 1980’s she had risen to national prominence in her work with the Kennedy
Center American College Theater Festival. That organization gave her national visibility and the opportunity to improve educational theatre and its many facets: diversity, equality, academic rigor, creative excellence and professionalism. She accepted
the responsibility that journey demands. She fought the demons and flew with the
angels along the way. Those in the profession—especially the women--praise her pioneer spirit and continue to take advantage of her wide-reaching legacy as a purveyor
of excellence in the American theatre.
. . . Carole did it all! She made it look effortless, but it takes many personal
resources to have a curriculum vitae with the many and varied accomplishments included in hers. Highlights of her career include her service as national president or
chair of: The Kennedy Center/American College Theater Festival, the College of
Fellows of the American Theatre, the Association for Theatre in Higher Education, the
National Association of Schools of Theater, and the National Theatre Conference.
NOTE: Several Partners have sent donations to NAPAT in Carole’s name. Accordingly Treasurer Joyce Cavarozzi has created a Distinguished Alumni Memorial Fund
for those who might want to donate in memory of Carole and/or other Partners who
have left us. All donations will go to the NAPAT Scholarships and are fully taxdeductible.
