ABOUT THE KTC SCHOOL OF
PRACTICAL NURSING
JANUARY 2016
KTC’s School of Practical Nursing works diligently to prepare its
students for the health care workforce and for the national licensure
exam. As a District, KTC continues to strive and excel beyond the
state and national, first attempt, NCLEX-PN Candidate Pass Rate.
KTC’s NCLEX-PN Pass Rate as a District for the past five years (20112015 YTD) is 93.19%.
The KTC School of Practical Nursing operates within the philosophical
framework of Kiamichi Technology Center. The faculty of the KTC
School of Practical Nursing embraces the mission, values, and
philosophy of Kiamichi Technology Center. The school prepares an
individual to practice as a Licensed Practical Nurse. The purpose of
Kiamichi Technology Center’s School of Practical Nursing is to educate
men and women to function as competent nurses qualified to apply
to take the NCLEX-PN for licensure as a Licensed Practical Nurse
(LPN). Learning opportunities are provided for each student to
develop basic knowledge and skills as a practitioner of practical
nursing. The faculty of the School of Practical Nursing incorporates
the concepts of holistic health, nursing and education into their
philosophy.
Covering a 13 county area and approximately 11,200 square miles,
the KTC Practical Nursing Program is not only the largest program of
its kind in number of students but also in the number of square miles
the school district encompasses. (Refer to map inside front cover.)
The Full-Time and the Part-Time Programs are both post-secondary
programs designed to provide students with basic training in Practical
Nursing. An important phase of the training is the practical
experience provided throughout this program. Upon graduation,
students will be eligible to take the NCLEX-PN examination, which if
successfully passed, will provide excellent employment possibilities in
the healthcare field in which there is presently a shortage of trained
practical nurses.
The KTC School of Practical Nursing was initially established/
approved by the Oklahoma Board of Nursing (OBN) and the
Oklahoma Department of Vocational Technical Education, now known
as the Oklahoma Department of Career and Technology Education
(ODCTE/CareerTech), in 1970.
The Full-Time course is eleven-months or 1508 clock hours. The PartTime course is eighteen-months or 1508 clock hours. The Part-Time
course covers two school years with a summer break in June and July.
The curriculum includes class, laboratory practice and clinical
experience. There are 780 hours spent in class, laboratory practice
and group conferences. This enables the students to gain basic
information and skills needed in the hospital or other health
organizations and 728 hours are spent in the practice of nursing
patients of all age groups, under the direction of professional
instructors.
The first KTC campus to admit classes in 1970 was McAlester where
faculty and curriculum were transferred from the hospital-based St.
Mary’s School of Practical Nursing. Approval was granted by the OBN
and ODCTE for each Practical Nursing program as follows:
McAlester Campus --------------------------------------- 1970
Poteau Campus ------------------------------------------- 1970
Talihina Campus ------------------------------------------ 1971
Idabel Campus -------------------------------------------- 1975
Hugo Campus --------------------------------------------- 1978

Idabel Campus (part-time program) ---------- 2004-2010
Atoka Campus (2nd part-time program)------------- 2005
Antlers Campus (part-time evening) ---------------- 2008
The Kiamichi Technology Center Practical Nursing program is
designed to meet the needs of students who reflect a wide range of
academic abilities and socio-economic backgrounds.
KTC VISION:
KTC is recognized as a leader in CareerTech education and
business excellence.
KTC MISSION:

Currently 10 program sites operate as one program under the
direction of one Director of Practical Nursing and one Assistant
Director of Practical Nursing. Two faculty members are responsible
for instruction and supervision of 20 students at the McAlester,

responsible for instruction and supervision of 10 students at Antlers,
Atoka, Durant, Stigler and Talihina. The maximum faculty to student
ratio is 1:10. When combined, the 15 faculty members and 150
student nurses comprise one of the largest practical nursing programs
in Oklahoma. Thousands of Practical Nurses have graduated since the

EQUAL OPPORTUNITY /
NON-DISCRIMINATION
STATEMENT
The Kiamichi Technology Center Practical Nursing Program is
approved by the Oklahoma Board of Nursing (OBN). Graduates of
this state-approved program are eligible to apply to write the
National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX) for practical
nurses. Applicants for Oklahoma licensure must meet all state

Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation, and evidence of
citizenship or qualified alien status. To be granted a license, an
applicant must have the legal right to be in the United States
(United States Code Chapter 8, Section 1621). In addition,
Oklahoma law requires the Board of Nursing to issue a license
only to U.S. citizens, U.S. nationals, and legal permanent resident
aliens. Other qualified aliens may be issued a temporary license
that is valid until the expiration of their visa status, or if there
is no expiration date, for one year. (updated December 2015)
Kiamichi Technology Center does not discriminate on the basis of
race, color, sex, pregnancy, gender, gender expression or identity,
national origin, religion, disability, veteran status, sexual
orientation, age, or genetic information with respect to the terms,

programs and services, employment practices, treatment of
individuals, or any aspect of its operations. The district also
provides equal access to the Boy Scouts of America and other
designated youth groups. This notice is provided in compliance

shall impose a disciplinary action against the person who is
attempting to procure a license as a LPN and is guilty of deceit or

individual basis at the time application for licensure is made, with
the exception of felony convictions. An individual with a felony
conviction cannot apply for licensure for at least five years after

EVENING PART-TIME PN PROGRAMS
KTC Practical Nursing has two Part-Time Evening Programs that start
in August and end in May. The program consists of eighteen months
total classroom and clinical experience with a summer break in June
and July. Evening program students attend class three evenings per
week and clinical rotations are three evenings per week. Days and
times may change during the course of the program to accommodate
various learning experiences.
If applicable, submission of signed and dated handwritten letter
describing the date, location, and circumstances of any disciplinary
action or investigation taken against any health-related license or
certification or registration. Certified copies of the Charges/Complaints,
Findings of Fact, and Orders must be sent by the licensing agency to: KTC
School of Practical Nursing, PO Box 70, Antlers, OK 74523.
Locations for the Part-Time Evening PN Programs are:
• ANTLERS
• ATOKA – not accepting applications until January 2017
WHEN SHOULD I APPLY?
If applicable, applicants who have ever been judicially declared
incompetent are required to submit certified copy of Court Order and a
signed and dated handwritten letter describing the date, location and
circumstances of the incident(s), and, if applicable, the resulting action(s)
taken by the court.
Applications for the KTC Practical Nursing Programs are only accepted
from January 1st through April 15th each year for the classes that
begin in June and August of that year.
NOTE: Meeting the stated requirements does not guarantee admission to the
PN program. Qualified applicants will be contacted for an interview. Selection
for entrance into the Practical Nursing Program is based upon a point system.
Applicants are evaluated on a number of variables including: evidence of
motivation, academic ability, personal understanding of and propensity for
practical nursing, references, interview, and potential for continued
constructive use of professional education. Following the interview process
with the Admissions Committee, qualified applicants with the highest
interview scores will be admitted into the program.
The PN Application is available beginning January 1 each year. An
application packet and PN Program Catalog containing frequently
asked questions can be obtained at your local KTC campus or on the
KTC website: www.ktc.edu.
The deadline for submitting your application which includes: the PN
application form, required and related documents, and a
nonrefundable application fee is April 15th, 5:00 PM at your KTC
campus. If the deadline falls on a Saturday or Sunday the applications
will be accepted through the following Monday until 5:00 PM.
An interview with the Admission Committee is granted if the above
requirements are met. Following the interview process applicants with the
highest interview scores will be admitted into the program.
The KTC Practical Nursing program is governed by the Oklahoma Board of
Nursing (OBN). Each instructor cannot supervise more than 10 students in the
clinical area. Therefore, our programs are limited to a 1:10 ratio which is 10
students in each part-time program and 20 students in each full-time program.
Your application must be submitted in person to the campus you wish
to attend. DO NOT submit applications or related documents to the
KTC PN Director’s Office.

and continually interacting with a multi-cultural society while
progressing through stages of growth and development. As
they evolve, their needs are identifiable and arranged
according to Maslow’s Hierarchy of needs.
The curriculum plan is based upon the mission, philosophy and
objectives of the Practical Nursing Program and is supported
by a logical rationale for organizing and sequencing the
content. The curriculum prepares the graduate for licensure
and the full scope of practice as a Licensed Practical Nurse as
defined in Oklahoma state law.
We believe that Nursing is an art and science that assists
individuals and their support systems to achieve their optimal
well-being. It involves intuition, creativity, caring
compassionate interpersonal processes, application of nursing
therapeutic communication skills and the Nursing Process,
using nursing diagnoses. Nursing advocates the promotion and
maintenance of health and facilitates the prevention and
management of illness. It is integral to the progress of an
individual’s movement through the continuum of care in an
environment of respect, compassion and empathy from birth
through death. With this in mind, an attempt is made to
develop in the student a clinical competence and a profound
respect for the patient as a person with rights and privileges.

EDUCATION
We believe Education requires the active participation of the
adult learner in an organized program of study utilizing critical
thinking, acquired knowledge, skills and attitudes. Learning is a
shared process between student and faculty. The students
maintain an individual accountability for assimilating
knowledge and skills for their own personal satisfaction, as
well as to benefit society. The faculty provides a learning
environment in which the curriculum is developed to proceed
from the simple to the complex and provides close correlation
between theory and practice through concurrent and/or
sequential instruction. Integration of their knowledge is a
challenging educational undertaking and remains a lifelong
process for any individual.

The KTC Practical Nursing Faculty incorporates the concepts of
holistic health, nursing and education into their philosophy.
Nursing Education requires the active participation of the
adult learner and emphasizes the technical skills necessary to
recognize and meet the health care individual’s basic physical,
emotional, spiritual, and socio-cultural needs. We believe
nursing education should assist the student in acquiring the
knowledge, skills and attitudes necessary to function as a
member of the health team meeting the basic human needs of
clients of all ages where nursing takes place, or wherever the
community dictates. Nursing Education should motivate and
improve communication skills to allow for continued growth,
leadership development, and community involvement.
HOLISTIC HEALTH
We believe in Holistic Health care, a system of comprehensive
or total patient care that considers the physical, emotional,
social, economic, and spiritual needs of the person; his or her
response to illness; and the effect of the illness on the ability
to meet self-care needs. We believe that individuals are
dynamic
Nursing as an academic subject can be developed at differing
levels of knowledge and skills. One necessary level is that of
Practical Nursing which forms the basic foundation for nursing
practice. We believe that Practical Nursing Curriculum is based
on sound education principles, the natural and social sciences;
and is related to the level of nursing for which the student is
being prepared for at KTC School of Practical Nursing.

Many of these clinical facilities are located over 45 miles away.
KTC does not guarantee you will attend clinical at the health care
facility closest to your home. Also, some PN programs may travel
to Arkansas or Texas clinical facilities to receive the necessary
clinical training. STUDENTS MUST HAVE DEPENDABLE
TRANSPORTATION AND BE PREPARED TO MEET THE EXPENSES
OF COMMUTING. Many students carpool if the clinical site is very
far from their campus.
The 18-month program, as

ARREST RECORD
Kiamichi Technology Center and the School of Practical Nursing
consider student conduct and discipline to be very serious matters.
Kiamichi Technology Center School of Practical Nursing (“KTC”) only
serves adult students. KTC has established this Policy on Nursing
Student Conduct and Discipline (“Policy”), which is applicable to all
nursing students, full-time and part-time. This Policy explains the
standards of conduct and civility expected of nursing students and
also explains the disciplinary actions that may be taken when a
student’s conduct violates those standards. Educational opportunities
available to students may be cut-short or terminated in instances
where a student’s conduct violates the approved standards outlined
in this Policy or when a student, for other reasons, cannot fulfill
program requirements essential to successful course completion.
If you have ever been summoned, arrested, taken into custody,
indicted, convicted or tried for, or charged with, or pleaded guilty to,
the violation of any law or ordinance, or the commission of any
misdemeanor or felony, or have been requested to appear before any
prosecuting attorney or investigative agency, in any matter, with the
exception of minor traffic violations, then you are considered to have
an arrest record. (Please note that charges including, but not limited
to DUI or DWI are not considered minor traffic violations and must be
reported.)
In instances involving a student’s dismissal from a course or program,
KTC will utilize procedures that are fair and reasonable. Each student
is encouraged to cooperate and comply with the standards of conduct
set out in the Policy. This Policy is designed to ensure that all students
have an opportunity to benefit from educational opportunities
available at KTC. Conduct or behavior that violates any of KTC’s
policies, rules, regulations or practices, or which interferes with or
disrupts the educational process, must be and will be addressed by
KTC administration. This Policy explains KTC’s standards of conduct,
the disciplinary actions that may occur as a result of violations of the
standards, and the procedure that will be used when it is necessary to
dismiss a student from a course or program.
The Oklahoma Board of Nursing may or may not allow you to apply
for licensure with such a record. Clinical facilities may refuse to allow
you to perform clinicals at their facility which could hinder or prevent
your ability to complete the program. It depends on the severity of
your arrest record. An arrest will not necessarily keep you out of the
KTC PN Program.
KTC School of Practical Nursing complies with the Oklahoma Board
of Nursing relative to felony convictions and application for
licensure. Based upon a history of arrest and/or convictions,
students may be unable to perform clinicals at certain facilities.
If you have an arrest record (misdemeanor or felony) you are
required to submit, with your PN Application, “certified” copies of the
court documents and a statement of explanation regarding the arrest.
Refer to Questions 25 & 26 in the FAQ section of this catalog, for
additional detailed information regarding arrest records.

DRUG TESTING
Students of the Kiamichi Technology Center School of Practical
Nursing will be required to submit to routine, random and reasonable
suspicion drug testing throughout the program.
Effective January 1, 2013, state law (59 O.S. §567.18.B) requires each
applicant for licensure as a LPN to have a fingerprint-based background
check completed not more than ninety (90) days old at the time of
submission of the application for licensure. The background check
consists of fingerprint-based searches of the Oklahoma State Bureau of
Investigation (OSBI) and Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) Criminal
History Record Information databases and name index searches of
computerized databases containing criminal history records.
All students will be tested for drugs and alcohol prior to their
participation in clinical rotations. Additionally, students may be tested
for drugs and/or alcohol at any time on a random selection basis
while enrolled in the Practical Nursing Program. Finally, reasonable
suspicion testing will be performed as needed, per the judgment of
the Director of Practical Nursing. All drug and alcohol testing will be
conducted in compliance with applicable law.
HISTORY OF CRIMINAL CHARGE(S)
In addition to the background check, applicants for licensure in
Oklahoma who have ever been:
Testing positive for drugs or alcohol, or refusing or failing to
participate in or cooperate with any part of the drug testing process is
a direct violation of Kiamichi Technology Center’s Policy on Nursing
Student Conduct and Discipline. This violation is taken very seriously.
Any student who tests positive for drugs or alcohol or refuses or fails
to participate in or cooperate with any part of the drug testing
procedure will be immediately dismissed from the KTC Practical
Nursing Program.

NATIONAL
CRIMINAL HISTORY
RECORDS SEARCH
(CHRS)
19. How important is my Criminal
History Records Search
(CHRS/background check)?
It is mandatory that it be completed
legibly and accurately and submitted
with your application. You must use
your full legal name (no initials).
Your application is considered
incomplete and you do not quality
for an interview with the Admissions
Committee if: (1) you fail to comply
with the request for a CHRS, which is
a national background search
including a sex offender registry
check, or (2) you fail to pay the
application fee when submitting your
application, or (3) you fail to sign and
date the CHRS form, or (4) you fail to
submit
certified/official
court
documents and a written letter of
explanation pertaining to any arrest
records you have. (See page 13 of
this catalog for further information
regarding arrest records.)
KTC SCHOOL OF PRACTICAL NURSING
20. Where do I obtain a Criminal History
Records Search?
It is included in your PN Application
for Admission. Complete and sign the
CHRS form and submit with your PN
Application for Admission to the
campus. The cost is included in your
application
fee.
KTC
PN
Administration will perform the
background search.
BACKGROUND SEARCHES (CHRS)
PERFORMED BY ENTITIES OTHER
THAN KTC PN ADMINISTRATION WILL
NOT BE ACCEPTED.
Please note that you must report all
arrests and/or charges that have
been brought against you in any
state.
21. What if my driver’s license and/or
state of residence is not Oklahoma?
Your driver’s license and/or state of
residence do not have to be from
Oklahoma to apply to the KTC
Practical Nursing Program. The
Criminal History Records Search is a
national search that will verify your
criminal history, including any sex
offenses, occurring in the United
States.
22. Why do I have to have a Criminal
History Records Search?
As of 2004 all hospitals and some
other clinical facilities require that
Criminal History Records Searches
(CHRS / background check) be
performed on all students before
they begin their clinical rotations.
The Department of Health and
Human Services requires nursing
facilities to make background
investigations on all of their
employees, and that now extends to
students. This is to safeguard the
wellbeing of all residents receiving
Medicaid or Medicare, and is a
Federal Statute. This means if you
PROGRAM CATALOG & FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
have an arrest record, you may not
be admitted to the clinical facility as
a student. Your conviction would be
evaluated by the facility prior to their
acceptance of you in their facility. If
you are deemed to be a risk to the
welfare of residents, you will be
denied the ability to perform your
clinical rotation at the facility. The
clinical rotation is a required part of
your training.
Any sex offender as established by
state law cannot be in close
proximity of any minor. As this is a
public school with high school
students in regular attendance, and
as health facilities have children in
them routinely, no sex offender is
allowed to be enrolled in the KTC PN
Program.
A student that has a history of an
arrest(s) and/or convictions may be
prohibited from training in health
care facilities that KTC contracts with
for clinical rotations. If your criminal
history is positive, the facility may
request to review your personal
criminal history background. Each
facility has the right to accept or
reject any student based on
information shown in the criminal
history background check. KTC
cannot overrule the decision of a
clinical site.
The inability to attend clinical
rotations will result in an unexcused
absence for each day that you are
denied access to the clinical facility.
Two unexcused absences and you
will be dismissed from the KTC PN
Program.
23. Is my CHRS shared with anyone
other than KTC?
Your CHRS may be shared with
hospitals and/or clinical facilities
where you may be performing
clinical rotations. These clinical
rotations are a required part of your
training. (Refer to Question 22.)
22
JANUARY 2016
24. Who pays for my Criminal History
Records Search?
You do. The fee is included in the
application fee that you submit to
the local campus when you submit
your application.
If you fail to include the fee, fail to
sign and date the CHRS form, fail to
submit
certified/official
court
documents and a written letter of
explanation pertaining to any arrest
records you have, your application is
considered incomplete and you do
not qualify for an interview with the
Admissions Committee and therefore
cannot qualify for a position in the
class.
The application fee is payable to
Kiamichi Technology Center.
25. What if my Criminal History Records
Search shows a record?
KTC School of Practical Nursing
complies with the Oklahoma Board
of Nursing relative to felony
convictions and application for
licensure. Based upon a history of
arrest and/or convictions, students
may be unable to perform clinicals
at certain facilities.
If you have an arrest record
(misdemeanor or felony) you are
required
to
submit
“certified/official” copies regarding
the arrest WITH your PN Application.
The Oklahoma Board of Nursing may
or may not allow you to apply for
licensure with such a record. Clinical
facilities may refuse to allow you to
perform clinicals at their facility. It
may depend on the severity of your
arrest record. An arrest will not
necessarily keep you out of the KTC
PN Program.

county/city or the federal court of the district
in which the action occurred. These
documents are dated and signed by the court
clerk, and affixed with the court seal.
Expunged Record – If the offense has been
expunged, you must submit a certified copy of
the Order of Expungement. You obtain these
documents from the courthouse in the
county/city or in the federal court of the
district in which the court action occurred.
Internet court documents (such as OCIS case
reports) and faxed records will not be accepted.
23
JANUARY 2016
YOU ARE
REQUIRED
TO SUBMIT
ARREST RELATED
DOCUMENTS WITH
YOUR PRACTICAL
NURSING
APPLICATION TO
KTC BY THE APRIL
15TH DEADLINE.
Felony Record - A candidate for a license to
practice as a licensed practical nurse shall
submit to the Oklahoma Board of Nursing
“certified written evidence that the applicant
has never been convicted in this state, the
United States or another state of any felony,
unless five (5) years have elapsed since the
date of the criminal conviction or the
termination of any probation or other
requirements imposed on the applicant by the
sentencing court, whichever shall last occur,
or a presidential or gubernatorial pardon for
the criminal offense has been received” [59
O.S. §567.6].
Therefore, applicants for licensure in
Oklahoma with one or more felony
convictions cannot apply for LPN licensure in
Oklahoma for at least five years after
completion of all sentencing terms, including
probation and suspended sentences, unless a
presidential or gubernatorial pardon is
received.
PLEASE NOTE THAT YOU MUST REPORT ALL
ARRESTS AND/OR CHARGES THAT HAVE
BEEN BROUGHT AGAINST YOU.
IF YOU ARE FOUND TO HAVE BEEN DISHONEST
CONCERNING ANY OF THE ABOVE, YOU MAY
BE DISMISSED FROM THE KTC PN PROGRAM.
Failure to submit the above information in a
timely manner may result in a delay in
processing the OBN application. After the OBN
staff reviews this information, the applicant
will be notified of any additional action that
must be taken. The applicant may be required
to appear before the OBN. Additional
documentation that may be requested prior
to this appearance, includes, but is not limited
to, letters of reference from a clinical faculty
member, the director/dean of program, a
probation officer, employer or other. Please
be aware that the applicant may not be
eligible for licensure or endorsement to
surrounding states due to individual states’
restrictions, even if the applicant is able to be
licensed in Oklahoma. Individuals who plan to
apply for licensure in other states must check
with that state’s board of nursing to obtain
information on requirements.
KTC SCHOOL OF PRACTICAL NURSING
26. What if my court record is sealed or
expunged?
If you have a sealed record, you will
need to submit an “official” letter
from the court stating the reason
your record cannot be found or
obtained. Again, this letter must be
from the court with the court’s
official stamp or seal. This letter
must be submitted with your PN
Application.
If you have an expunged court
record, you must submit a certified
copy of the “Order of Expungement”
with your PN Application. You may
obtain these documents from the
courthouse in the county or in the
federal court of the district in which
the court action occurred.
Internet court documents (such as
OCIS case reports) and faxed records
will not be accepted. Please note
that you must report all arrests
and/or charges that have been
brought against you.
27. What if I get arrested during the PN
Program?
If a student is arrested and charged
with a misdemeanor and/or a felony
during the PN Program, the student
must report this immediately to the
PN Instructor(s) and the PN Director,
and submit a copy of all documents
regarding the arrest, as listed on
page 23, to the PN Director. Should
the student be convicted of a felony
while enrolled in the PN Program the
student will be dismissed.
PROGRAM CATALOG & FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
REFERENCE
LETTERS
28. What do I do with the three (3)
“Reference Letters” included in the
application?
You are to sign and date these letters
at the top and return all three (3)
with your application. That is all that
you do with the letters. KTC will mail
these letters to the references you
list on your PN Application. DO NOT
MAIL THESE LETTERS YOURSELF OR
HAND CARRY THEM to the
individuals you use as references. It is
very important that you supply
complete, accurate and legible
information
regarding
these
references. Your three reference
letters will only be mailed out once
by KTC. The school will not mail
reference forms to an incomplete
address. The school will not re-send
reference letters. For that reason, it
is important that you check with the
individuals you are using as
references to be certain you have
their correct mailing address. KTC is
not responsible for lost or stolen
mail.
29. What if the individuals I use as
references do not return my
reference letters?
You may still be competitive;
however, the lack of any reference
letter will cost you points in the
overall selection process.
KTC will only send your reference
letters once. For this reason we
suggest you contact the individuals
you are using as references prior to
listing them on your application to
JANUARY 2016
make sure they understand the
importance of the reference letter
and to make sure they will return it
promptly to KTC. Make certain that
you list their correct and complete
mailing address as KTC will not mail
reference forms to an incomplete
address. KTC is not responsible for
lost or stolen mail.
30. Why can’t I obtain my three (3)
reference letters myself?
The references will not be considered
valid and you will receive no points
for the letter(s).
31. What happens if I do hand deliver a
completed reference letter to the
school from my reference?
You may still be competitive, but the
reference letter will be disqualified
and you will receive no points for the
reference letter.
32. What if one or more of my
references are not returned to KTC
by the deadline?
You may still be competitive;
however, the lack of any reference
will cost you points in the overall
selection process.
33. Who should I use for a reference?
Appropriate references are an
employer,
previous
employer,
counselor, teacher, anyone who
knows your work ethics, sense of
responsibility, judgment, etc.
DO NOT USE FAMILY OR FRIENDS.
If your reference is from a family
member or friend it will disqualify
the reference letter and you will
receive no points for the reference.
It is a good idea to contact the individuals you are using as references prior to
listing them on your application to make certain they understand the importance
of the reference letter and to make sure they will return it promptly to KTC.

PRE-ADMISSION
EXAMINATION
47. What is the pre-admission
examination?
The Evolve Reach (HESI) Admission
Assessment Exam (A2) is a
computerized nursing entrance exam
required for applying to the Practical
Nursing program at Kiamichi
Technology Centers.
This is an entrance exam that
measures aptitude, basic knowledge
and learning potential. Various
nursing schools use an entrance
examination as they help ascertain
the applicant’s readiness for the
Practical Nursing program.
The exam will test in four areas:
• English Language - Reading
Comprehension – Provides reading
scenarios in order to measure
reading comprehension, including:
identifying the main idea, finding
meaning of words in context, passage
comprehension,
making
logical
inferences, vocabulary & general
knowledge, and grammar, etc.
• Math – Basic addition, subtraction,
multiplication, division, fractions,
decimals, ratio and proportion,
household
measures.
Personal
calculators are not permitted, but a
basic calculator is available within the
software. Scratch paper will be
provided.
• Learner Profile – assessment of
preferred learning style. (Not
included
in
minimum
score
requirements). These scores are for
use in understanding yourself better
and if admitted to the program, will
be a tool for nursing instructors to
more fully understand how to assist
you in your learning experience.
27
• Personality Profile – Provides you
with a printout of study tips based on
your learning style and personality
profile. (Not included in minimum
score requirements).
The exam provides an objective
measurement of your critical reading
ability and compares your ability
against the level of mastery required
for success in the nursing program.
Secondly, the exam evaluates your
level of success with basic
mathematics, the math necessary for
you to function, not only in your
academic courses, but also in your
clinical practice following graduation.
The pre-admission exam is not
designed to keep you out of school.
It is designed to help you identify
which of your academic processing
skills (if any) must be sharpened
before you begin this advanced
education.
The exam will take approximately
three (3) hours. If you are late in
arriving, you will not be allowed to
test and will forfeit your exam fee.
No late comers will be admitted once
the testing process starts. Also,
calculators or any device that can be
used to calculate will not be
permitted for the test. Cell phones,
Bluetooth technology/earpieces, etc.
will not be permitted. They must be
turned off completely (no tone or
vibrating, etc.). You will be dismissed
from the test and forfeit your exam
fee if you have any of these items on
or on vibrate, etc. while testing. Food
and drinks are not permitted in the
testing area.
Refer to the “HESI
A 2 OVERVIEW” on
page 29 for more
information about
the pr e-admissi on
exam.
KTC SCHOOL OF PRACTICAL NURSING
48. When is the pre-admission exam
offered at KTC?
The testing is only offered for a short
time in April of each year. Call your
local campus for testing dates. The
class size is limited so sign up early.
KTC strives to accommodate as many
individuals as possible, for the
examination, by offering testing at
different times of the day and
evenings.
49. Where can I get a Study/Review
Guide?
There may be many online sources
that can assist you in preparing for
the pre-admission examination.
KTC does not have study materials
available, however, many online
sources offer a review or study guide
for the HESI A2. Search for “HESI
Admission
Assessment
Exam
Review”.
50. Do I have to make a certain score on
the pre-admission exam?
Yes, the minimum criteria on the
HESI A2 is a score of 75% in Reading
Comprehension and a score of 75% in
Math.
However,
meeting
this
one
requirement does not guarantee
admission to the KTC PN Program nor
does it guarantee an interview. This
score is just one step of the
application process.
51. What if my score falls below the
required percentage?
If your score falls below the required
percentage, you will not be eligible
for an interview with the Admissions
Committee. We suggest you take a
remediation course in math or
reading and re-test the following
year.
The pre-admission exam is not
designed to keep you out of the
program. It is designed to help
you identify which of your
academic processing skills (if
any) must be sharpened before
you
begin
this
advanced
education.
PROGRAM CATALOG & FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

You are allowed to test at only one
campus once per school year.
53. What does the pre-admission
examination consist of?
The exam will test in four areas:
English
Language
Reading
Comprehension and Math. The final
two sections: Learner Profile and
Personality Profile are not included in
the minimum score requirements.
(Refer to Question 47.)
Your score is based on the number of
correct
answers
you
mark.
Therefore, you should attempt to
answer all questions even when you
are not perfectly sure of the answer.
If you leave an answer blank it will be
counted as incorrect.
54. I am more comfortable with a paper
test. Can I take the pre-admission
exam on paper instead of on the
computer?
No, the exam is available only on
computer.
55. Can I use a calculator while taking
the examination?
Outside calculators or any device that
can be used to calculate will not be
permitted for the test, however, a
basic calculator is available within the

technology/earpieces, etc. will not be
permitted. They must be turned off
completely (no tone or vibrating,
etc.). It is highly recommended that
you take care of any personal
matters with your family, etc. prior to
the examination so you are not
expecting a phone call during the
examination. You will be dismissed
from the test and forfeit your exam
fee if you have any of these items on
or on vibrate, etc. while testing.
Food and drinks are not permitted in
the testing area. (Refer to Question
47.)
56. How long does the examination
take?
The test session takes approximately

permitted to receive messages or
phone calls or have persons wait for
you in the examination room. Once
the testing process has started you
are not allowed to leave the room
and re-enter unless given a break by
the test proctor. No late comers will
be admitted once the testing process
starts. (Refer to Question 47.)
57. Is there a testing fee for the preadmission examination?
Yes, it is included in your Application
Fee. The Application Fee must be
paid prior to scheduling a test date. If
you fail to appear at your scheduled
date/time, you will forfeit your test
fee and will be required to pay an
additional fee to reschedule another
testing time, if one is available.
58. What if I have a special testing
need?
If a physical handicap, or learning
disability, prevents you from taking
the pre-admission examination under
standard conditions, you may
request special accommodations.
You must inform Kiamichi Technology
Center (KTC) of this request at least
four weeks prior to the test date and
have documentation from your
physician related to your special
needs. Please adhere to the four
weeks prior to the test date, as final
approval and special arrangements
must be made through the test
provider as well as KTC. We cannot
guarantee approval of special
accommodations requested if less
than four weeks notification.
Call your local campus to make these
arrangements. A statement from
your medical doctor, as appropriate,
attesting to the special need and a
letter, specifying the desired testing
conditions will be required at least
four weeks prior to the test date.
ANY VARIATION IN ARRANGEMENTS

KTC SCHOOL OF PRACTICAL NURSING
PROGRAM CATALOG & FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
59. What if I am late the day of my preadmission examination?
Once the test proctor has closed the door,
no one will be allowed in the testing room.
The exam is a timed test and a limited
number of individuals are scheduled to test
at one time. The test will start promptly at
the time you have been given. For that
reason, do not be late. Arrive early enough
to find the testing room and get yourself
settled in. The Test Proctor will not delay
starting the test for anyone and no one is
allowed to enter the room once the door
has closed, as this will disrupt the other
individuals testing.
You will not be admitted to the exam if you
are late and your application fee will not be
refunded. You will be required to pay an
additional test fee to reschedule another
testing time, if one is available. (Refer to
Question 57.)
60. What do I bring to the pre-admission
examination?
•
•
•
•
•
61. When is the pre-admission examination
given?
Your PN Application Fee receipt from
KTC
Photo Identification – a valid
government-issued photo ID (e.g.,
driver’s license or passport)
Wear comfortable clothing – you may
want to bring a sweater

institution other than KTC?
No, you must take the pre-admission
examination at one of our KTC campuses
when the testing is offered.
66. When will I know my pre-admission
exam scores?
Your results of the pre-admission exam are
available on-line upon completion of the
exam. KTC will be unable to provide copies
of the printout of the results of the exam.
However, you may print the results and any
remediation tools once you leave the exam
room by accessing your Evolve/Elsevier
account.
The examination is offered for a short time
in April of each year. Contact your local
campus for test dates. (Refer to Question
48.)
62. Can I take the pre-admission
examination at a campus other than the
campus I want to attend?
It is recommended that you not test
anywhere except the campus you wish to
attend. This will eliminate the chance of
your scores being sent to the wrong
campus, thereby delaying your application
process and possibly missing the deadline.
63. Can I test more than once within a
school year?
You will be required to show:
•
Calculators or any device that can be used
to calculate will not be permitted for the
test.
Cell
phones,

permitted. They must be turned off
completely (no tone or vibrating, etc.).
Food and drinks are not permitted in the
testing area.
JANUARY 2016
No, you are only allowed to take the preadmission examination once each school
year and at only one campus.
67. Can I call the campus and get my preadmission exam scores?
No, your scores are confidential; do not call
for your test scores. KTC will not be able to
provide copies of your test score.
Your exam score will be available to you by
logging into your Evolve/Elsevier account.
68. When will I set up my online account for
the exam?
64. Can I use my pre-admission exam scores
from a previous year?
No. The exam is a “snapshot” reflecting the
applicant’s ability in a variety of content
areas at only one point in time. Since
previous scores are more than a year old, it
is important to review a more recent
assessment.
You will set up your online account to take
the pre-admission exam the day you are
scheduled to test. You will be given
instructions, by KTC, prior to beginning the
exam.
You
need
to
remember
your
Evolve/Elsevier sign-on and password as
you will need them if accepted into the
program.

KTC SCHOOL OF PRACTICAL NURSING
THE INTERVIEW
PROCESS
69. Why do I have to interview with the
Admissions Committee?
KTC has hundreds of applicants each
year. We are only allowed a certain
number of students per instructor, so
class size is limited.
70. What does the interview consist of?
During the interview, an applicant is
evaluated and selected on a point
system.
The applicant is interviewed by a
committee consisting of faculty and
administrators. Each member rates the
applicant separately and the scores are
averaged. The applicants with the highest
point average will be selected for the
class.
At this interview, you will be given points
for: High School GPA or GED Scores,
qualifying pre-admission exam scores,
employment back-ground, educational
background, your references, and
information in your completed file, as
well as interview information and
questionnaire response. Applicants must
have physical and emotional health to
meet the demands expected in nursing,
and a sincere interest in helping people.
The Practical Nursing Program seeks
students who are mature and highly
motivated.
71. When will I find out my interview date,
if I qualify?
Approximately 2-3 weeks after the
final test date you will receive a letter
from KTC informing you of your interview
date and time.
PROGRAM CATALOG & FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
72. When will I know if I am selected for the
class?
Approximately one week after the
completion of interviews at your campus
you will receive a letter from KTC
informing you of your status for the class;
i.e. accepted as a regular student,
accepted as an alternate student, or not
accepted.
If you are selected for the class, the letter
will give you further instructions
regarding a CPR class. A CPR certificate
good for the entire length of the
program is a requirement. KTC will offer
the CPR class before the PN class begins.
It is your responsibility to contact your
KTC Campus to sign up for this class.
If you obtain your CPR Certification from
another source, make certain that the
CPR is a “Healthcare
Provider
certification for Infant, Child & Adult”.
This CPR certification must include infant,
child and adult.
We prefer the American Heart
Association BLS for Health Care Providers
Program (CPR/AED).
73. What is an “alternate student“?
An ‘alternate student’ is treated the
same as a ‘regular student’ for
approximately two weeks of both the
full-time program and the part-time
program. Alternate students are required
to attend class beginning with the first
day of class which will include the PN
Orientation. All policies apply to the
alternates and they are required to
attend class the same as a regular
student until a decision is made as to
their standing. Alternates compete for
openings (if any) that become available.
The selection criterion of the alternate to
become a regular student, includes, but
is not limited to: GPA, attendance and
student conduct/professional behavior. If
no opening is available, the alternate
student is dropped after the two week
period.
JANUARY 2016
However, openings often arise and
alternates may be selected for a ‘regular
student’ position. If you are accepted
with ‘alternate student’ status, we
encourage you to complete your financial
aid process as soon as possible.
Approximately 75% of the alternates are
accepted as regular students by or before
the end of the two week period. By
completing the process you will be
prepared to accept the ‘regular student’
position without any delay.
An ‘alternate student’ is not required to
pay tuition until accepted as a ‘regular
student’. However, once selected as a
‘regular student’ your tuition is
immediately due if you wish to remain
in the program.
If you are not accepted for the class, we
encourage you to apply the following
year.
74. How do I finalize my enrollment for the
Practical Nursing program, if selected?
Once you receive your
acceptance” you must
tuition before the first day
make arrangements if you
financial aid.
“letter of
pay your
of class, or
qualify for
CPR Certification is a prerequisite.
Students must be certified for the entire
program. KTC will offer a class to obtain
this certificate prior to the first day of
your PN class. It is your responsibility to
register for the CPR class when it is
offered. (Refer to question 11.)
Submit Proof of Immunizations by the
first day of class for regular students or
by, or prior to, the first day of clinical
rotations for alternate students who are
promoted to regular student status.
Failure to provide this evidence of
immunity, by this deadline, may result in
disciplinary action. (Refer to Page 9 & 10
and to Question 78.)

daytime programs and day clinical times
may be required for evening part-time
programs.
83. Is transportation available to the clinical
sites?
You are responsible for your own
transportation. Many clinical sites are
located over 45 miles away. KTC does not
guarantee you will attend clinical at the
health care facility closest to your home.
Also, some PN programs may travel to
Arkansas or Texas clinical facilities to
receive the necessary clinical training.
Students must have dependable
transportation and be prepared to meet
the expenses of commuting. Many
students carpool if the clinical site is very
far from their campus.

KTC SCHOOL OF PRACTICAL NURSING
PROGRAM CATALOG & FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
87. What if I have an arrest record?
KTC School of Practical Nursing complies
with the Oklahoma Board of Nursing
relative to felony convictions and
application for licensure. Based upon a
history of arrest and/or convictions,
students may be unable to perform
clinicals at certain facilities.
If you have an arrest record
(misdemeanor or felony) you are
required to submit official/certified
copies of the following documents WITH
YOUR APPLICATION:
• Affidavit of Probable Cause,
• Information Sheet (a brief summary of
the incident prepared by the court),
• Charges (a listing of the charges
brought against you),
• Judgment and Sentence (findings of
the court and sentence imposed), and
• Verification
that
sentencing
requirements are complete,
• Signed and dated handwritten letter
describing the date, location and
circumstances of the incident(s), and,
if applicable, the resulting action(s)
taken by the court or agency. If you
have more than one incident you are
reporting, you must describe every
case/charge separately that has been
filed.
These documents may be obtained from
the courthouse in the county/city or in
the federal court of the district in which
the court action occurred.
Internet court documents (such as OCIS
case reports) and faxed records will not
be accepted.
Felony Record - A candidate for a license
to practice as a licensed practical nurse
shall submit to the Oklahoma Board of
Nursing “certified written evidence that
the applicant has never been convicted in
this state, the United States or another
state of any felony, unless five (5) years
have elapsed since the date of the
criminal conviction or the termination of
any probation or other requirements
imposed on the applicant by the
sentencing court, whichever shall last
occur, or a presidential or gubernatorial
pardon for the criminal offense has been
received” [59 O.S. §567.6].
Therefore, applicants for licensure in
Oklahoma with one or more felony
convictions cannot apply for LPN
licensure in Oklahoma for at least five
years after completion of all sentencing
terms,
including
probation
and
suspended
sentences,
unless
a
presidential or gubernatorial pardon is
received.
PLEASE NOTE THAT YOU MUST REPORT
ALL ARRESTS AND/OR CHARGES THAT
HAVE BEEN BROUGHT AGAINST YOU.
IF YOU ARE FOUND TO HAVE BEEN
DISHONEST CONCERNING ANY OF THE
ABOVE, YOU MAY BE DISMISSED FROM
THE KTC PN PROGRAM.
JANUARY 2016
COURSE
DESCRIPTION
88. Can you tell me about the Practical
Nursing Course at KTC?
The Full-Time and the Part-Time Program
are post-secondary programs designed to
provide students basic training in
Practical Nursing. An important phase of
the training will be the practical
experience provided throughout this
program. Upon graduation, students will
be eligible to take the NCLEX-PN
examination, which if successfully
passed,
will
provide
excellent
employment possibilities in hospitals,
nursing homes, clinics and many other
areas in which there is presently a
shortage of trained practical nurses.
The Full-Time course is eleven-months or
1508 hours.
The Part-Time course is eighteen-months
or 1508 hours (two school years with a
summer break in June and July).
The curriculum includes class, laboratory
practice and clinical experience. There
are 780 hours spent in class, laboratory
practice and group conferences. This
enables the students to gain basic
information and skills needed in the
hospital or other health organizations
and 728 hours are spent in the practice
of nursing patients of all age groups,
under the direction of professional
instructors.
If no records are found, have the agency
provide a certified letter stating no
records were found in a search from the
date of offense through current date.
Certified copies are copies of court
records obtained directly from the
courthouse in the county/city or the
federal court of the district in which the
action occurred. These documents are
dated and signed by the court clerk, and
affixed with the court seal.
Expunged Record – If the offense has
been expunged, you must submit a
certified copy of the Order of
Expungement.
You
obtain
these
documents from the courthouse in the
county/city or in the federal court of the
district in which the court action
occurred.
The Oklahoma Board of Nursing may or may not
allow you to apply for licensure with an arrest
record. Clinical facilities may refuse to allow you to
perform clinicals at their facility. It depends on the
severity of your arrest record. An arrest will not
necessarily keep you out of the KTC PN Program.
(Refer to “from the OBN regarding arrest records” on page 13 & 14
for more information.)

and on file by the first day of class for
regular students or the first day of, or prior
to, clinical rotation for alternates selected
to fill vacant seats. (Refer to page 10 for
further clarification.)
Failure by a “regular student” to provide
this evidence of immunity by the first day
of class may result in disciplinary action.
Failure of compliance by an “alternate
student” to provide this evidence of
immunity by or before first day of clinical
rotation will result in inability to attend
