Fiscal Year
2013-2014
Annual Report
Our mission: To break the
cycle of homelessness by
helping people achieve
— and maintain —
permanent housing and
stability in their lives.
Inspirica Annual Report
2013-2014
EXECUTIVE LETTER: JASON T. SHAPLEN, CEO
The fiscal year that ended June 30, 2014 was a year of remarkable achievement for
Inspirica, Inc. Once again, we moved a record number of homeless men, women
and children from the streets to health, jobs, homes – and dignity. We achieved
record results in every area of our work, including job placements, housing placements,
average starting salary, job/housing retention rates and much more.
I want to thank you – our donors and volunteers – for making this possible. None of
what we achieved would have been possible without you. Together, we have
radically changed the lives of hundreds of people for the better. In many cases, we
have quite literally saved them.
While we are pleased with our success, we cannot yet celebrate, however. Indeed, the
task before us remains great. Demand for our services continues to soar, fueled by the
high cost of living and dearth of truly affordable housing in lower Fairfield County.
Today, 1 out of every 3 people in the United States lives in poverty or “near poverty”
(within 50% of the poverty line). From there, they are cascading into homelessness. In the past two years alone the number
of homeless people in Stamford/Greenwich increased a staggering 43%. Over the past five years the number of
chronically homeless people in our community has risen 72%. This is not surprising given the Stamford-Norwalk region is the
third most expensive housing jurisdiction in the nation.
Inspirica is uniquely positioned to answer the call that this challenge presents. We are one of only a few organizations
nationally that is able to address both the physical component of homelessness (residential services) and its underlying root
causes (support services) in a “one-stop-shop” setting. Our ability to provide comprehensive, holistic and integrated
services on a single, end-to-end platform exponentially increases our success rate.
•
Over the past year we made a record 191 job placements. The average starting salary of our clients was a
record 28% above the minimum wage. Thanks to our new Job & Housing Retention Program a full 81% of the
people we placed in jobs remain employed after six months.
•
Success in making job placements had a direct impact on the number of people we moved into permanent housing.
Over the past year, we moved a record 154 men, women and children into permanent homes of their own
where they are living safe, stable lives. As with employment, the people we placed in housing stayed housed.
Indeed, at six months a record 94% of the people we moved into permanent housing remained there.
•
Over the past four years, we have made a record 680 job placements and moved a record 537 people into
permanent housing.
In addition to our strong results, Inspirica also completed major capital improvements over the past year – all of which has
helped ensure the safety, security, and dignity, of the people we serve. These include the expansion of our Woodland
Campus by purchasing and completely renovating a new building that provides deeply affordable housing for families.
This building joins another building we bought last year for the same purpose.
On behalf of all of us at Inspirica and the clients we serve thank you for your support.
Together, we make a difference.
Sincerely,
Inspirica Annual Report
