Floriano heeft lange tijd voor zijn moeder gezorgd, die twee jaar geleden is gestorven.
Hij heeft enige tijd in de Golf staten gewerkt totdat zijn ziekte hem dwong naar huis te
komen. Op latere leeftijd trouwde hij met Floriano en na enige tijd werd hun zoon
Byron geboren. Floriano speelde ook als muzikant in een bandje. Lange tijd konden zij
rondkomen van het spaargeld en hetgeen Floriano verdiende met zijn werk als TVreparateur, totdat bleek dat Floriano een tumor in zijn hoofd had en geopereerd moest
worden. Helaas bleef Floriano gedeeltelijk verlamd, zijn rechterhand is totaal verlamd
en zijn rechter been sleept, waardoor hij geen werk meer kan doen. Bevinda verdient
als babysitter en naaister een klein maandinkomen. Het beetje spaargeld en de
verdiensten van Bevinda zijn onvoldoende om de school van hun zoontje Byron te
betalen. Byron is een goede leerling en een fijne zoon, maar zijn schoolresultaten
lijden onder de situatie thuis. Bevinda heeft ons een brief geschreven waarin ze de
situatie uitlegt en hulp vraagt.
Dear Madam Lydia,
I am the mother of Byron whom you know very well. My husband Floriano suffered a set back after his
operation of brain tumor ten months back and with physiotherapy and other medical treatments he has
started to move about the house. We were a middle class family and with the earnings of my husband we
had a moderately good life. If you come to our house you will see for your self but we need to earn to
live and take care of our son and see that at least he has is a good education for his future. This is not
possible as I cannot leave my husband and go to work outside the house. I baby sit three children and
also do some tailoring.
Things have changed now and it has become difficult to make ends meet as the medical bills and post
therapy treatment for my husband to walk again has drained our savings. As you know my son Byron is
a good student and does well in school but he needs extra coaching in Konkani and mathematics. He is
now 11 years old and in the 6th grade in school. The cost of his tuitions is Rs 350/- for a month and
for 10 months he will need Rs. 3500/- .
School fees, term fees and extra curricular activities, Computer class fees, school uniforms and sports
kit cost a lot. I am also grateful for the help you gave me for the education of my son last year but he
will go to a higher class where the fees are high and we cannot afford them. His monthly educational
expenses amount to Rs. 800 a month.
I appeal to you and your kind group to help me in this my time of need as I am unable to pay his school
and tuition fees for this coming academic year. We also thank you for the generous hamper you sent to
us and for that we are grateful.
I am sure and hope that we will be able to resolve this situation next year but until then I am looking
towards you to help me. I am aware of the good work done by the PAS group and hope to have a
favourable reply from you. I am also grateful for the help you gave me for the education of my son but
he will go to a higher class where the fees are high and we cannot afford them. This is my second appeal
to you.

De PAS organisatie kent deze familie goed en Byron komt vaak naar het PAShouse,
waar we hem bijlessen geven. De grote verandering in het gezin door de ziekte van
zijn vader heeft een grote impact op hem. We bezoeken dit gezin vaak om te zien hoe
het met ze gaat en we zien dat ze in grote nood zijn en in aanmerking komen voor
sponsoring.
