INDIANAPOLIS - The television in Pierre
Garcon's apartment is always on these
days, not with game tape but with pictures
from the devastation in his parents'
homeland of Haiti.
"Tell you the truth I sleep with CNN on," the
Colts' second-year wide receiver said this
week as he prepared for today's AFC
Championship Game. "I've been watching it
since last Tuesday. Anderson Cooper, Larry
King ... every time there's breaking news,
I'm trying to find out."
It hasn't been easy for Garcon to
concentrate on football but he says he is
using the earthquake in Haiti as
"motivation," so that his friends and family
back on the island can watch him excel as
he represents them. After sparking the
Colts' 20-3 victory over the Ravens last
week, Garcon displayed the Haitian flag, a
reminder of his passionate quest to raise
funds for food and medical supplies.
Most, but not all, of Garcon's family has
been accounted for. Many were saved in a
twist of fate, according to his oldest sister,
Michele.
"I was raised by my aunt," Michele
explained. "She and my uncle happened to
be at a funeral at the time when the quake
hit. The funeral was 20 minutes away from
their home. When they returned home,
everything was blown away by the quake.
Thank God, they all went to a funeral and
nothing happened."

Not everyone was that lucky. The family of
Michele's husband, Rameau Estime, was
hard hit. Estime's sister's husband perished
along with three of their five children.
Estime's sister is in critical condition along
with one of the surviving kids. The other child was miraculously uninjured and helped pull
his mother out of the rubble.
On Garcon's father's side of the family, they are still looking for the 21-year-old son of

Garcon says Haiti will come through this. "Haiti is a tough country, they are tough people,"
he said. And he should know. His path to the NFL is a story of survival and dedication.

Garcon's father died when he was 6 years old, leaving Pierre's mother, Marie Nicolas, to
raise him and his three older sisters. He was born in Carmel, N.Y., where his parents were
temporarily employed as farm workers. At the time, his sisters were being cared for back in
Haiti. Eventually, they rejoined his mother and Garcon in Florida, where his mother worked
the sugar cane fields and later, overnight in the post office.

Only 16 when her father died, Michele also had to take a job at a shoe store, working eight
hours a day after school.
Buddy Ryan has spent most of a
lifetime setting NFL records for
bluster and brashness.
"We were never poor," said Garcon's other sister, Maquissia. "My mother made sure we
always had something to eat and clean clothes. Was it easy? No, not at all. I would cry
because my mom was working so hard. That's why I'd go to school saying I don't want to
work in the fields. I don't want to work as hard as she had to work."
