JANA QUARTER HORSE FARM
1963-2015
Our program is soon coming to an end. For over 50 years
we have worked hard to preserve the original quarter horse
and its foundation genes. During these 50 years we strove to
improve the conformational and functional qualities of these
foundation horses. Each year we expected an improvement in
our foal crop. We did this by selectively breeding and removing
any mare that gave us two unsatisfactory foals and removing
any stallion that gave us two unsatisfactory foal crops. While
our foal crops display a variety of eye-catching colors, color was
the least important characteristic to us. To quote my horseman
father, “The best color on a horse is good”. Over these years
we elected not to breed the modern event-specific quarter horse
simply because we, along with equine geneticists, believe eventspecific breeding reduces the overall quality of the horse. Our
concept of a good, versatile horse was formulated by years
of showing, training, judging and breeding the American
Quarter Horse. We hope you, along with our hundreds of
customers over the past half century, get as much enjoyment
from a Jana horse, as we have producing these wonderful
animals.
Jack & Nancy Ashman
Jana Quarter Horse Farm is located halfway between Pittsburgh and
Harrisburg, approximately 40 miles North of Breezewood and 40 miles
southwest of State College. Lunch is available on grounds.

Reference Sire:
Jana Can Bee Blue
1994 Blue Roan Stallion
Jana Can Bee Blue was our premier stallion for nearly two decades. He
possesses an excellent disposition, a
willingness to please and a striking
color and conformation. We trained
him to the highest performance level
of all the horses we have owned.
We showed him and won many performance classes. Many spectators never realized he was a stallion. We
demonstrated his abilities at training
clinics. His abilities are now found in
his grandchildren sired by Jana Whiskey Blues. Unfortunately, we have lost
or sold all but one of his remaining
daughters. Due to his age, he is now
retired.

Jana Whiskey Blues is now our

have to earn your title”. Whiskey has
earned his. He consistently produces
foals with excellent disposition and
conformation. And so important to us,
they move with natural soft, collected
stride of their sire. They also possess
his head-turning good looks. He is so
genetically powerful, each year he
produces stallion prospects, a standard we use to judge our breeding
stallions. Our stallions must breed
up, and he does.

We searched a long time to find a blue roan
stallion that would continue our program’s
quality. We found Hitch in the high plains

bone and foot. His pedigree is also eye
catching. For speed, he is line-bred Three
Bars, Leo and Joe Hancock. For cow sense,

substance and color, he is line-bred Blue
Valentine. He embodies ranch versatility.
His foals have disposition, size, substance
and color. Their pedigrees contain eight of
the ten most influential sires in the history
of the breed – Blue Valentine, Joe Hancock,

He’s a cute little fellow who probably
will mature around 15 hands. He may shed out to be a dun

sire Dos Plenty Blue, stands approximately 15 hands. Dos’s
sire has earned over 720 performance points. Dos is also a linebred Blue Valentine. Plenty Sharp’s dam is a full sister to Jana

If I were a barrel racer, I would
pick this mare. She combines a
long, front-leg stride with the powerful driving stride of her back
legs. She clearly outdistances anything in the pasture. She
combines that speed with athleticism. All this comes naturally.
Her sire, Red Mesa Half Hitch, contains the genes of the six of
the ten most influential ranch/versatility sires and her dam
carries the blood of the supreme champion and supreme
champion sire, Goldseeker Bars, plus numerous AAA horses. .

Her sire was a loud-colored leopard Appaloosa, owned by Bert
Cooper. She is unstarted due to Elaine’s lack of time to devote
to her horses. She’s at the right age to start and do extensive
riding. If you lack the time or skills to ride her, talk to Lawayne

Beauty, beauty, beauty —
both inside and out. Although
we are more concerned about
quality and ability, this filly
has the rarest color of the breed— grullo roan. With her physical
characteristics, she would be attractive in any color. Her physical
beauty is matched by her disposition and athleticism. All this
quality comes from her pedigree which contains generations of
our program which is regarded as one of the most successful
ranch/versatility in the east. A quick look at her and her pedigree
proves that point. Started under saddle.

Sister Sue is a broke riding mare and

when I rode her I decided to put her in the broodmare band.
She is very athletic, light in the mouth and very soft strided.
Despite producing 3 quality foals, we did not rebreed her. She

bonus of both her sire and dam being blue roans, so she will be

This colt is conformed to be a
powerful competitor. Look at his
stout muscling, strong foot and bone
and very attractive head. His dam
carries the blood of some of the top
cutters and reiners of the breed. Her
sire and dam are money winners and producers in NRHA. This
colts sire, Jana Whiskey Blues, adds even more athleticism to
him. Maggie is one of our best, if not the best, consistent
producer of high-quality athletes. No gamble in this colt.

Maggie has never failed
us, regardless of the stallion
she was bred to, the mark
of a great broodmare. Her pedigree contains the greats of the
cutting and reining horse world. This pedigree when combined
with Whiskey Blues has consistently produced very attractive
athletes. Maggie normally passes her stout body onto her foals
(see Lot 34), but this one has the athletic build of her sire, Jana
Whiskey Blues. This filly’s beautiful color is accented by her
black points.
