Out of God’s Way and
Into His will
Matthew 16:23 “But He turned and said to
Peter, “Get behind Me, Satan! You are an
offense to Me, for you are not mindful of the
things of God, but the things of men.” NKJV
When I was pastor at FBC Carrizozo in the mid
1980’s, my wife Trudy and I became volunteer
EMT’s and worked with Lincoln County
Ambulance. It opened many doors for us to
connect with the community and gave us access
to all the medical facilities we worked with. In
one of the emergency rooms there was a sign that
read “Either lead, follow or get out of the way.”
Too often some who were in the ER would get in
the way of others who were trying to provide
necessary lifesaving care.
It is not uncommon for us to think we are doing
something right for our Lord when, in fact, we
are in the way of what He wants to do. In the
context of this passage God had just spoken
through Peter after Jesus asked “Who do people
say the Son of Man is?” After the others
indicated that some believed Him to be John the
Baptist, Elijah, Jeremiah or another prophet
Peter said “’You are the Messiah, the Son of the
living God.’”
Jesus acknowledged that what Peter said was of
the Holy Spirit and then began to explain that He
must go to Jerusalem, suffer, die and be raised
the third day. Peter immediately rebuked Jesus
saying, “‘Far be it from You, Lord; this shall not
happen to You.’” Jesus’ response to Peter is
stinging, “Get behind Me, Satan! You are an
offense to Me, for you are not mindful of the
things of God, but the things of men.”
Peter was seeking to protect Jesus which would
have kept Him from accomplishing what He
came to do through his death, burial and
resurrection. Peter’s heart was right but his
focus was on the wrong thing. Peter had to get
out of Jesus’ way and, by doing so, would be
stepping into His will. God’s will rarely makes
sense to us but it always leads to the fulfillment of
his purpose and His glory. Have you ever found
yourself in that situation? I pray that I will be
mindful of the things of God and not the things of
men. I would never want to hear “Get behind me
Satan.” I do want to hear “Well done, good and
faithful servant.”

Vista Grande Church in Sandia Park, NM has been
joyfully serving the foster care community for several
months now. We partner with The Forgotten Initiative,
a Christian foster care advocacy group that enables us
to effectively serve in tangible ways. Right now we
serve a Christian Foster Care agency in Albuquerque,
The BAIR Foundation. In February, we will be putting
together bags of goodies that point the children to the
Lord’s love and also encourages the foster care
workers that churches in our community care deeply
about them and the children/families they serve. The
bags will have special gifts and cards that share Bible
verses with the children. We want them to know on
Valentine’s day that they are cherished and loved. We
have also been doing service projects for foster
families so that they are encouraged and strengthened.
On our last project, we painted and cleaned a foster
mom’s living area before she had surgery. Soon we
will be doing another service project for another foster
mom who is having surgery. We can provide meals,
cleaning, and yard work when those things become
difficult for the foster families.
Together we can make a tangible difference to families
who feel forgotten and alone. We can bring joy and
purpose to the foster care community through the
Church. The advocate for The Forgotten Initiative for
our area is a member of our church and is happy to
reach out to other churches to help enable them to also
meet the needs of this vulnerable community (the
foster care community).
If you would like your church to be involved or would
like to learn more about projects you can partner with,
please contact Jen at 405-385-6341 or
[email protected].
