Welcome
Dear Friend,
On behalf of the over 790 members of the Terre Haute Chamber of Commerce, we are pleased to
provide you with information about Terre Haute. As the heart of the Wabash Valley, Terre Haute
serves over a quarter-of-a-million residents throughout 16 counties as a major regional
shopping, healthcare, manufacturing, and service hub in West Central Indiana.
Terre Haute is a modern Midwest city with a proud heritage. Located along the beautiful Wabash
River in Vigo County, Indiana, we are a progressive and vibrant community with a bright vision
for the future. We are also home to a wide array of small, medium and Fortune 500 industries,
four colleges, a state university, state-of-the-art public schools, wonderful parks, great shopping,
a variety of restaurants and an experienced and educated workforce.
Throughout this booklet, you will find a variety of information, providing valuable details on
many aspects of our community, including education, industry and recreation. If you feel this
information does not adequately answer your questions about our fine city, please feel free to
contact us and we will be happy to provide additional details.
Sincerely,
David D. Haynes

On the Banks of the Wabash...
Terre Haute comes from the French phrase terre haute,
which means “Highland.” It was likely named by French
explorers in the early 18th century to describe the
distinct location above the Wabash River.
The recent community-wide initiative, 2013 Year of the
River, provided arts, cultural, environmental and
educational events focused on the river that gave Terre
Haute its name.
Through this initiative, Wabashiki was introduced. A
2,600 acre Fish and Wildlife Area along the Wabash
River, Wabashiki offers patrons a location perfect for
hunting, fishing, trapping, bird viewing and many other
outdoor activities.
The Wabash River is the reason settlements first
occurred in this region, so it is important to enhance
and protect this natural resource. The Wabash River is
home to 150 species of fish, provides drinking water to
72 percent of Indiana counties and offers many
outdoor recreation opportunities.
Arts
Initiated in 2003 through the efforts of
dedicated volunteers from all areas of the
community, Art Spaces is focused on
uniting business and the arts to positively
impact the economy of the area. It is the
only not-for-profit organization in the
Wabash Valley establishing a highly visible
collection of site-specific outdoor
sculpture. Be sure to check out Art Space’s
outdoor sculptures located throughout the
Wabash Valley, including A Chorus of
Trumpets, Renewal, Max Ehrmann at the
Crossroads, Emanating Connections and
many more.
Arts Illiana is a local, membership-based,
non-profit organization that promotes,
supports and enhances the arts and
cultural activities of the Wabash Valley. Arts
Illiana works closely with the Rivers and
Roads Artisan Trail, Max Ehrmann Poetry
Competition, Tablescapes and continues to
be heavily involved in the 2013 Year of the
River initiative.

A Great Community
School Days K-12
Quality is a multi-faceted characteristic of Vigo County’s schools. For example, the Indiana
Department of Education (DOE), Sigma Xi and the Engineering and Technology Educators of
Indiana have recognized our teachers for excellence in the classroom. The Vigo County School
Corporation is partnering with Indiana State University on a $360,000 Indiana DOE Innovation
Grant. Student teams in MATHCOUNTS and JETS (Junior Engineering Technical Society) have
won numerous national and state competitions. In addition, the Vigo County School
Corporation leads the state in high school graduation rate. Vigo County students also have
captured the prestigious statewide Mr. Math and Miss Math awards. It all goes to show we take
our children’s education seriously.
The Vigo County School Corporation includes 18 elementary schools, five middle schools,
three comprehensive high schools, and two alternative schools.
The local educational community also features the Terre Haute Christian School, St. Patrick
School, Terre Haute Montessori School and John Paul II Catholic High School.
