ROSARY CORNER “These persons, when they [receive Holy Communion], strive with all their might for sensible sweetness, instead of worshipping in humility and praising God within themselves. So much are they given to this, that they think when they derive no sensible sweetness, they have done nothing, so meanly do they think of God; neither do they understand that the least of the blessings of the Most Holy Sacrament is that which touches the senses, and that the invisible grace it confers is far greater; for God frequently withholds these sensible favors from men, that they may fix the eyes of faith upon Himself . . . All this is a very great imperfection, being against the purity of Faith, and directly at variance with the nature of God.” – St. John of the Cross, p. 28, Dark Night of the Soul “He will provide the way and the means, such as you could never have imagined. Leave it all to Him, let go of yourself, lose yourself on the Cross, and you will find yourself entirely.” – St. Catherine of Siena SCRIPTURAL ROSARY - Wednesday, December 2, 2015, 6:15 p.m., St. Columbkille. All are invited. Questions? Please contact Susan Baker at 289-2449 or email [email protected]. NINE MONTHS WITH CHRIST IN THE WOMB Week 36: Jesus is developing increased coordination this week. He has begun holding things in his little hands, things like his ears, his knees, and even his umbilical cord once or twice. Jesus of the womb, Hear our prayers! Please pray this prayer every day from now until December 25th, 2015: Dear Jesus of the Womb, Most fragile child of Mary’s protection, we look to You as the youngest image of perfect innocence. We lift up our prayers to you who will save each of our souls. Just as You entered humanity through this most gentle and helpless state, now help us to find Your presence in the faces of all the gentle and helpless persons of the earth. Bless us with eyes that see You and ears that hear You: in the presence of the poor and the outcast, the hungry and the homeless, the condemned and the war-torn, the elderly and the unborn. May we discover You every day as at Christmas and offer You our gifts every day as at Epiphany. This we ask of You and the Father, with Your Holy Spirit, and in union with Mary Your tender home, Amen. STC SOCIAL SENOIRS Tuesday, December 1, 2015, 12:00 p.m. StC Parish Center Basement. Thank you for continuing the tradition of great generosity for those most vulnerable and poor. ST. COLUMBKILLE The Church’s Dove June 9, 1866~June 9, 2016 150 Years of Handing on the Faith “In the light of the long and varied history of the Church, one hundred years’ existence of a parish may seem of little significance. On the other hand, the manifold graces which have come to the people of Wilmington through this Parish during the century just closed are overwhelming in retrospect. They move us to express profound thanks to Almighty God. For a century the Holy Sacrifice of Calvary has been reenacted in your very midst. The Eucharistic Lord in the tabernacle has been dwelling with you longer than any citizen of your community. For one hundred years men have received at your baptismal font the ineffable privilege of becoming members of Christ’s Mystical Body, and of having the gates of heaven thrown open to them. They have had the consolation of the confessional, and have knelt to receive the Bread of Angels at your Communion rail. By the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick they have been carried to burial, to the Chant of ‘May the Angels lead you to Paradise’. How great should be our gratitude to God on an occasion such as this! We pause, then to render our profound thanks to Almighty God for all His blessings. May the members of this Parish continue to be enriched by abundant graces and by a deep knowledge and warm love of God, for the sanctification of their own souls and for His everlasting glory. Faithfully yours in Christ, +Karl J. Alter, Archbishop of Cincinnati From: Excerpt from Archbishop Alter to the St. Columbkille Parish on the occasion of the centenary of the Parish in 1966. Try YDisciple—the program that brings together the most powerful influences in adolescent development: parents, peers, and mentors. FEASTS CELEBRATED THIS WEEK November 29 – First Sunday of Advent Gospel Reading: Luke 21:25-28,34-36 Jesus teaches his disciples to be vigilant so that they will be ready when the Son of Man comes in glory. Family Connection: In today’s Gospel, Jesus warns his disciples against the fatigue that can emerge if one becomes consumed by the anxieties of daily life. Many families are too familiar with the kind of fatigue Jesus refers to here. We may be concerned about a family member’s health, our job security, our children’s education, or any number of other concerns. All these are important matters. Jesus does not promise an end to daily worries and fears, but he does teach his disciples that they will have the strength to withstand anxiety if they stay focused on him, remaining vigilant for his return and praying for strength to endure all tribulations. Through prayer, God helps us stay focused on that which is most important in our lives. November 30 – St. Andrew, Apostle St. Andrew was a native of Bethsaida in Galilee, a fisherman by trade, and a former disciple of John the Baptist. He was the one who introduced his brother Peter to Jesus, saying, “We have found the Messiah.” Overshadowed henceforth by his brother, Andrew nevertheless appears again in the Gospels as introducing souls to Christ. After Pentecost, Andrew took up the apostolate on a much wider scale, and is said to have been martyred at Patras in southern Greece on a cross which was in the form of an “X”. This type of cross has long been known as “St. Andrew’s cross.” December 3 – St. Francis Xavier, Priest (1506 - 1552) St. Francis Xavier was born in the castle of Xavier in Navarre, Spain. In 1525, he went to Paris where he met St. Ignatius Loyola and with whom he received Holy Orders in Venice in 1537. In 1540, he was sent to evangelize India. He labored in western India, the island of Ceylon, Malacca, Molucca Islands, island of Mindanao (Philippines), and Japan. In 1552, he started on a voyage to China but died on Sancian Island. December 4 – St. John Damascene, Priest & Doctor of the Church (657-749) St. John Damascene was a learned theologian who carefully gathered together and transmitted to us the teaching of the Greek Fathers, and is thus one of the most trustworthy witnesses to oriental tradition. He also wrote many liturgical hymns still in use today. St. John Damascene died in 749. Leo XIII proclaimed him a Doctor of the universal Church. We are collaborating with the Wilmington Friends Meeting to sponsor the following local charity: CLINTON COUNTY COUNCIL ACADEMIC SUCCESS PROGRAM The Clinton County Youth Council (CCYC) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization whose mission is to “help youth make healthy choices” by providing free after-school academic support, educational programming, and positive youth outreach events. The CCYC was established in 1997 with initial funding from the Family and Children First Council and the United Way of Clinton County. At the time, the CCYC activities consisted of organizing student leaders and hosting monthly FUN NIGHTS, positive teen outreach events. In 2000, with support from the City of Wilmington, the CCYC opened doors to Clinton County’s only free after-school youth center, located on Sugartree Street. The CCYC Youth Center allowed the organization to increase educational programming, outdoor recreation, and free after-school snacks. Today, the signature after-school program of the CCYC is the ACADEMIC SUPPORT PROGRAM (ASP). The ASP is a comprehensive tutoring program that engages students with their parents and teachers to bridge the technological gap and meet the individualized needs of the students. In its first year, the ASP provided more than 200 students with over 2,000 hours of academic support. Since 1997, the CCYC has registered over 2,000 unique student members to the organization and has provided countless hours of after-school support. A donation envelope can be found on the back of the radiators at StC, and at the front of HNC. Any support for this charity is welcome until December 30, 2015. If paying by check, please make out to St. Columbkill. Any questions or concerns, please call 937-382-2236 or email: [email protected]. Please take a few minutes to look at the 2015 edition of the sponsor page of this bulletin. It is through the generosity of our area sponsors that we get our bulletin printed free of charge to the parish. We ask you, our parish family and guests, to consider these advertisers as a source of future business. Please mention you saw their ads on our bulletin! We would like to thank our local advertisers for their support and encourage everyone to shop local to support our local economy.
