EXECUTIVE
COMMITTEE
A Whole Lot of Workin’ Goin’ On!
Long before the 2012 – 2013 Tallahassee Symphony Orchestra (TSO)
Concert Season began, new officers of the Tallahassee Symphony Society (TSS)
Executive Committee were inducted and then met at the Lake Iamonia home of
then Co-President, Bobbie Frye-MacDonald.

The air was charged like an allegro movement at that
first meeting of the Exective Committee, as Bobbie and
Anna began plans for fundraising and fun activities
that would take hundreds of volunteers and hours to
accomplish.
Glenn Hosken, who plans our pre-concert luncheons,
detailed the “Lunch with the Maestros Series” at the
Governors Club. Each luncheon during this season
features one of the five candidates for TSO’s Conductor
and Music Director position with the Symphony.
The luncheon allows the conductor-candidate to
introduce himself and interpret his style of conducting.
It enables Society members and other attendees to greet
the Maestro and to ask him any unanswered questions
they may have.
Tallahassee Symphony Society members and guests meet
Robert Trevino, the first conductor of the 2012 – 2013
Tallahassee Symphony Orchestra season.
The Tour of Homes plans, headed by Co-Chairs Mary Cordero and Thelma Nolan, were already underway and
raised excitement at the meeting, months before the December 7 and 8 Tour weekend.
Every activity involving the TSO and TSS requires months of planning and operations by the Executive Committee.
Members are encouraged to assist the Executive Committee when called upon so we may fulfill the mission of TSS.
Joanne Taylor, Donna O’Meara Volunteer of the Year
Joanne Taylor was presented the Donna O’Meara
Volunteer of the Year Award. You know her, because
she is always there, meeting and greeting you before
the Tallahassee Symphony Orchestra performances and
during intermissions.
What she does behind the scenes is even more
magnificent. Joanne’s tireless and endless work for the
benefit of the Orchestra puts to shame the 10-hour
request that each member of TSS volunteer each year as
a part of their membership.

The Gift That Keeps on Giving!
Who woulda’ thunk it? A reason, an idea, a
conversation, logistics, a plan, a presentation, an
ingathering, a task, a product. All of these measures
and more, are what it takes to put on an event in our
great City of Tallahassee. The “ingathering” is the
gift that keeps on giving.
The Tallahassee Symphony Society (TSS) has a
“reason” for putting on the Tour of Homes every
December. The “reason” is to support our wonderful
Tallahassee Symphony Orchestra.
This support, by the way, extends to the
Tallahassee Symphony Youth Orchestra. If you
attended our “Holiday Magic” Concert with Guest
Conductor, Kenneth Kiesler, you would have
been so proud of and impressed with our Youth
Orchestra. They played alongside our TSO musicians
for a portion of our Concert. Alexander Jimenez,
Music Director for our Youth Orchestra is to be
commended.
The “ingathering” includes each and every
person who organized the Tour of Homes, who
worked countless hours before, during, and after
the Tour. It includes our generous community. It
especially includes the homeowners who so
generously opened their homes for the Tour:
Tom and Sandy DeLopez
Sandy Kerr and Jessie Lovano-Kerr
Glenn Hosken
Alan and Marilyn Marshall
Without the homeowners, we would not have
the Tour of Homes. Between all the workers, the
homeowners, and our supporters who purchased
tickets, their gift enabled TSS to exceed its goal for
this fundraiser. It in fact enabled the fulfillment of
TSS’s total annual goal.
As if any of our homeowners need any more
beautiful artwork for their homes, TSS was doubly
blessed with the donations of 4 artworks by Water
Colorist Bill Thompson, who so graciously painted a
watercolor of each of our home-owners’ homes. The
watercolors were presented to each homeowner
Friday morning at the opening of each home.

Alan (Marilyn) Marshall a water color of the
Marshall home, contributed by Bill
Thompson, Water Colorist, in appreciation for
opening their home for the Tallahassee Symphony
Society Tour of Homes.

The TSS is grateful to all the merchants who
sold tickets for the Tour, including: Beethoven &
Company, Esposito Garden Center, Killearn
Antiques, My Favorite Things, Native Nurseries,
Tallahassee Nurseries, the Tallahassee Symphony
Orchestra Office, Gordo’s Cuban Cuisine, and
Tallahassee Symphony Society members.
Gordo’s Cuban Cuisine and Genghis Grill
generously donated a portion of their lunch proceeds
on the two days of the holiday Tour of Homes.
The two days of the tour required even more
volunteers, serving as Docents and House
Captains, who ushered guests through the homes; who
informed guests about the priceless objects of
art, other features of the homes, and some very
interesting stories about the families’ possessions or
works of art by family members, past and present;
and who protected the families’ possessions from
damage. Two shifts for each home, for each of the
two days, required upwards of 64 volunteers.
Page 3
The theme for the Tour was “sights and sounds
of the season”. The “sounds” were provided by
musicians who graced the homes with their
titillating music of various styles. The task of
organizing our musicians was capably handled by
Ms. Olivia Ahyoung. The gift by the musicians
creates the perfect ambiance for the Tour of Homes.
Hopefully, the beautiful music makes the hours spent
in the homes by the Docents and House Captains
more pleasurable. We just cannot thank them enough.
And the Publicity! What would the Society have
done without the generosity of the Tallahassee
Democrat for publishing week after week our
stories for The Chronicle and our postings in The
Limelight? Our special thanks to Kate Schofield
and Mark Hinson for all their efforts with these
publications.
We also were given publicity on WCTV and on
websites by the Tallahassee Capital City Villager and
the Tallahassee Grapevine. These are two new and
wonderful websites to keep Tallahassee OUT and
ABOUT. Many thanks to these additions to the
Tallahassee scene.
And what would publicity be without graphics
designers and photographers who donated their time,
talent and products? Our brochures and posters and
tickets and publicity photographs were the best!
So what is this gift that never stops giving? It is
when people gather for a cause and everything they
do emanates to others.
All the volunteers who gave of their time, their
talent, whatever their resources, not only gave...they
received...in joy, in new friendships, in peace, in
harmony with the Season. All the volunteers gave the
gift that keeps on giving. Thank you each and every
one of you.
Especially thank you, Co-Chairs, Mary Cordero
and Thelma Nolan for an incredible job well done.
What do YOU See in our Future?
“Politics as usual”, “Same ol’, same ol’”, “Here we go
again”, “Status quo” – these cliches are SO inappropriate
for the Tallahassee Symphony Society. One thing the
Tallahassee Symphony Society does NOT do, is allow
the “grass to grow under its feet”!
TSS, having just finished its fundraiser with the Tour
of Homes and having surpassed its goal in revenues,
already has hit the ground running” in preparation for
the 2013 – 2014 season of the Tallahassee Symphony
Orchestra.
Some “unfinished business” is that of introducing the
TSO Conductor candidates to our membership and to
those charged with selecting one of the five candidates as
the TSO Conductor and Music Director.
When I think of Boston (MA), the birthplace of
Bobbie Frye MacDonald, our TSS President, the very
first image in my mind is the Boston Pops -- with
fireworks “ablaze” in the background. What do people
think of when they think of Tallahassee, the capital city
of Florida, the seat of our government?
Do they envision our stately Capitol Building atop one
of our seven hills? Do they envision the Chambers of
the Legislature where our laws that keep us a society are
adopted?
Do they envision the gate and fountain at the
entrance to Florida State University through which
we all pass to attend Tallahassee Symphony Orchestra
concerts? Or, do they envision Doak S. Campbell
Stadium, home of our national champion football
team?
What TSS should want people to think about is
the TALLAHASSEE SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA,
much like the Boston Pops!
Our Capital City should be a cultural mecca for
Florida. We, as members of TSS should do all in our
power to help make and retain this as a reality.
When you think about the Tallahassee Symphony
Orchestra, ask yourself:
Page 4
What do I want from it?
How do I help assure it?
What am I willing to do to attain it?
What would enhance everyone’s
experience to ensure their support?
What makes my experience pleasurable?
What makes my experience unpleasant?
recently undocked from the Space Station, were
flying TOGETHER over our sky.
These are not rhetorical questions. Please send
your Executive Committee comments so we may “get
to work” at making our Orchestra a “blazing success”
that will draw attendees and supporters from all over
Florida.
When I think of Tallahassee Symphony Orchestra, I think of the night on top of the hill at Tom
Brown Park in Tallahassee, with the Tallahassee Symphony Orchestra playing “God Bless America” and
fireworks ablaze in the sky.........AND, above ALL that
MAGNIFICENT SOUND and the beauty of the
fireworks, our United States of America “spaceship” and the Russian spaceship, both of which had
THAT is the “PICTURES PERFECT” scene
stamped in my mind’s eye when I think of the
Tallahassee Symphony Orchestra. What is yours?
The Tallahassee Symphony Society needs members and the participation of members to ensure that
the Tallahassee Symphony Orchestra is STAMPED
in people’s minds so that traveling to Tallahassee or
attending the Tallahassee Symphony Orchestra
Concerts is a premier event in their lives.

Who’s Who in TSS
Bobbie Frye-MacDonald, a founding Member and
second president of Tallahassee Symphony Society, is
serving another term as President of the Executive
Committee. As President, she also represents TSS on
the Tallahassee Symphony Orchestra Board where she
is no stranger.
Bobbie has served many terms on the TSO Board
and held numerous positions on that Board. This
comes as no surprise because she has always been
active in our community and has chaired many
community events.
She serves on the Big Bend Hospice Ethics Committee and other of its committees. Her
expertise derives from her degree from the
Kennedy School of Ethics in Washington, D.C., and
her experience as a Clinical Ethicist on the Medical
Staff at TMH. A loyal Seminole, she holds a PhD
from FSU, from which she is a retired Professor in
the School of Nursing.
Page 5
It’s a wonder she had time to raise 3 sons and 2
daughters, to spend time with her 5 granddaughters,
as well has her husband, Jack MacDonald, Chief of
Medical Staff at TMH, retired. And, she loves flower
arranging and makes “people” her hobby, to boot.
In an interview, she expressed that she is excited
about the 2013-2014 orchestral season, for which she
is already planning TSS involvement. She wants TSS
membership to grow and for each and every member
to take part in TSS activities -- “The more you take
part in it, the more fun it will be.”
Tallahassee is lucky to have this very accomplished
and generous person in Bobbie Frye-MacDonald,
particularly since she moved here from Boston,
Massachusetts.
It’s good she likes it here with us, as she
traveled extensively and lived in Switzerland for
many years, where she learned to snow ski, and
without explanation, has never skied since. So we
don’t need to worry about her moving back to the
snow.
Bobbie’s contact information is in the TSS
Directory. If you need her attention, she will take
as much time as you need, away from enjoying her
beautiful wildlife lake where she says she is
“blessed to awaken every morning.”
