This year’s Home Show will be
judged on Sunday 25 July, so you
should be putting those finishing
touches to your entry now. Please
notify the Secretary that you want
to be in it as soon as possible.

IT all started a few months ago, when
I was bullied into trying African
Cichlids again. Actually I made the
decision to get back into Africans and
the bullying was about what I was
going to have.
See if you recognise the people in
this little part of the saga:
A. I would like some leleupis - the
bright-yellow ones. Perhaps halfa-dozen little ones.
B. No worries, I can get you some on
Tuesday. I’ll ring you.
A. Did you get those leleupis for me?
B. Yes. I couldn’t get little ones, so
I’ve got magnificent large ones.
The bloke owed me a favor.
A. Sounds expensive.
B. They are great value. For you, I
can do them at $X per pair.
A. Sounds all right. (Big mistake!)
Later, on arrival at B’s place:
B. What price did I quote you on the
leleupis? I can’t do them for less
than $2X.
A. Bother!(?) OK, let’s have a look at
them.
B. They’re not Neolamprologus leleupi leleupi, they’re N. leleupi
melas. `Melas’ means `honey’, so
they’ve got that beautiful honeycolored body (read a dull fawn)
with the bright-yellow fins. You
really need two pairs, just in case
you lose one of them!
A. Oh, OK. (I’m glad this guy’s my

Why was she bouncing off him like
that? The action was similar to fish
that have an irritation on their scales
and flick off the side of a leaf or a
rock.
Then I had a closer look. The male
flared his fins and intensified his color

from underneath and behind, he
clamped his fin and I noticed a small
stream of white fluid come out of his
vent. When the female swam right up
to him, some of this milt went into her
mouth. Why she actually swam right
up to him about half way between the
pectoral and anal fins was not clear.
I did not see her lay any eggs, but a
week or two later, when she was not
eating at all, I caught her up and she
spat out two fry that were still almost
all egg. I could not get any more out.
It’s a nerve-racking experience firstoff (for a long time) for a person with
big clumsy hands.
A week later they are nearly freeswimming, but the female still has
some in her mouth. (While I was writing this I thought it is ridiculous to
leave the remaining fry in her mouth,
so I got out another two. They do not
seem to be any different in size from
the two that have been out for a
week, and still have a bit of the egg
sac to go.)
I am really looking forward to them
taking the next step.
As a returnee to the Cichlidiot
Group, how about some of you
experts putting pen to paper and suggesting fish for the ideal Malawi tank
and for the ideal Tanganyikan tank?
The issue of fish compatibility
is important, as is size, diet, temperature, biotype, color, availability,
cost, etc.
