Husky Awards
Seniors Ria Nigam, Liana Gaspar, Kristen Berling, Cynthia
Chang, Ellie Orr, and Htet Wint were awarded
the Husky Award during Se Awards
Night. The Husky Award showed
that they best embodied what
it means to be a true husky.
For example, Ria Nigam,
Liana Gaspar, Ellie Orr,
and Htet Wint were
involved in Leadership
throughout their
entire high school
career. In addition,
Cynthia Chang
held officer
positions in
numberous clubs. Recipients of the Husky Awards were
selected on the basis of leadership in activities
and commitment to the school. They were
given certificates and graduation
cords in honor of what they have
accomplished for Washington.
“Washington’s environment
has definitely made me
mature as a person.
I’m glad I could
give back to the
students through
my involvement
in activities on
campus,” Chang
said.
Senior Emilio
Mackie was
honored with
the $180,000
Naval Reseve
Officer Training
Corps Scholarship
program. Through
NROTC, Emilio will
enter the Navy while he
is still in college, while
living a normal college life
with the exception of weekly
drills and community service
opportunities to prepare him for his
future career and learship position as an
American Navy Officer.
In order to
qualify for this
scholarship,
applying students
must meet the
Navy height,
weight, and physcial
requirements along
with graduation credit
requirements. The
NROTC not only will
provide up to five years of
Mackie’s college education,
but will also provide leadership
training from the Navy while he
is still in school along with four to six
weeks of summer intensive training.

Anaya and Gimeno say their goodbyes to WHS
David Anaya

Staff Reporter
P.E. teacher David Anaya
has decided to retire. He
has been working for
the district for a total of
23 years, seven of which
were at WHS and 12 of
which were at Maloney
Elementary School.
He is very happy to be able
to see his past elementary
school students as
high schoolers. He was
especially excited to teach
Mary Gimeno
this year because he was
able to see his grandson,
who is a freshman, every
day.
After graduation, he
plans on working on his
side antique business.
Anaya says that his time
here at WHS has been
amazing and is very proud
of all of his students. He
greatly enjoyed seeing his
students grow into fine
adults. He says that his
job was very unique and
rewarding.

After almost 40 years of
teaching Spanish, Mary
Gimeno feels that this year is
the right time to retire. When
June starts, she will have a tap
dance recital and her services
will be needed in Ohio to grade
AP Spanish Exams.
In July she can be found
performing in a musical theater
called “Ray Time” for Ohlone’s
Summerfest. will become a
support provider, which is a
part-time supervisor for upand-coming language teachers
when the new school year
begins.
The time that she spends
outside of the classroom will
be spent gardening, cooking,
and hiking. She plans to keep
her mind and body in shape
through exercising regularly,
pleaying piano and guitar, and
visting her family in Spain.
“Teaching isn’t about the
income. It’s about the outcome.
And how we touch our
student’s lives,” Gimeno said.

It is almost unbelievable how a
newspaper can drive students to
hysterics once a month. The last week
of every production cycle is a mix of
frustration, chaos, and suspense, ending
in a sigh of relief every last Thursday of
the month — that is, until we start the
next issue.
We know our storytelling isn’t
perfect. But within our mistakes
are the stories of our success. With
each issue we produce, we learn and
grow, building upon the knowledge
previous staff members have left us.
Each mistake, from a stray pica box to
a misplaced soccer ball, pushes us to
better ourselves.
The Hatchet giveth, and The Hatchet
taketh away. As much as we have
poured our blood, sweat, and tears into
this paper, we have received something
irreplaceable in return — a family.
The Hatchet family is one that is dear
to all our hearts. It is a family that has
endured multiple struggles together,
including late drafts, unresponsive
sources, crashing InDesign pages, and
more. But we have persevered through
these challenges to breathe life into our
newspaper. For many of us, The Hatchet
has become a part of us, and so we have
channeled our own personalities into it.
What you see is merely a small sample
of the diversity of WHS.
But most of all, our inspiration
comes from you, our reader. We hope
you have drawn inspiration from
our passion towards The Hatchet and
have applied it to your own activities,
interests, and everyday life.
