GROUP TOURS
The Fredericksburg Region
is composed of three distinct entities –Spotsylvania, Stafford and
Fredericksburg, Virginia–each with a vital role in the region’s
history. The town and surrounding counties were all born from
a single auspicious event– Captain John Smith’s 1608 journey up
the Rappahannock River, to what is now present-day Fredericksburg. Since that time, the Rappahannock River has played many
roles in the area’s lively and sometimes tragic history, a history
that has engaged and entertained visitors for over three centuries.
At the Fredericksburg Area Museum, the Spotsylvania County
Museum and other historic sites, visitors learn about the richness and simplicity of life in Virginia’s towns and countryside
before and after the Revolution. Stop by a colonial tavern where a
“wench” provides a lively look at 18th-century tavern life, or drop
into the apothecary’s shop where his helper may be mixing a
potion that will “cheer a man with a bad wife.” You can even share
the tastes of those times — or sip the vintage from a local winery.
Just 50 miles south of Washington, D. C., the region was witness
to many national events, such as the Revolutionary and Civil
Wars. Some of our nation’s most beloved figures, such as George
Washington, James Monroe, Thomas Jefferson, Robert E. Lee and
Ulysses S. Grant, lived in or spent time in the area.
Just a stone’s throw across the river lies Ferry Farm, George
Washington’s boyhood home in Stafford. In town, the James
Monroe law office provides an intriguing look into the long and
illustrious career of our nation’s fifth president. And it was here in
Set foot into some of the most interesting periods in America’s
past with a stroll among more than 350 original 18th- and 19thcentury buildings in Fredericksburg’s 40-block National Historic
District. While here, visitors can also step into over 100 shops
and boutiques, concentrated in the downtown area and along a
four-block “antique row” near the river. A dinner theater offers
professional performances and top-notch meals served at your
table by the cast of the show. Recreational opportunities abound.
The area boasts six championship golf courses and Lake Anna,
a 13,000 acre lake with boating, sailing, fishing and outdoor fun.
1777 that Thomas Jefferson, a frequent visitor, wrote the Statute
for Religious Freedom, one of his proudest accomplishments.
The Fredericksburg region is happy to share its heritage and
present-day pleasures. We invite you to share it with us.
Great armies under Generals Lee, Burnside, Jackson and Grant
clashed at Spotsylvania Court House, the Wilderness, Chancellorsville and Fredericksburg during the Civil War, while Walt
Whitman and Clara Barton nursed the wounded.

meticulous renovation. Shown is the elaborate plasterwork from
Colonial America. Left: One of the many cannons in the region’s Civil War

ATTRACTIONS
Chatham
later residents; African-American experiences during the civil
rights era–all stories that link our past to our present, stories of
transition and growth in a small community.
On the heights overlooking Fredericksburg,
this Georgian-style
mansion was completed in 1771 but is best
known for the role it
played during the Civil
War. Known as the
Lacy House, the mansion served as a Union
headquarters during the
Battle of Fredericksburg,
despite the sympathies
of its colorful war-time
owner, J. Horace Lacy.
At Chatham, Clara
Barton and Walt Whitman joined in the treatment of hundreds
of wounded soldiers.
Today, Chatham contains exhibits about its long and varied
history. The grounds have been restored to a colonial revival
style designed in the 1920’s.
Fredericksburg/Spotsylvania
National Military Park
Chancellorsville Battlefield Visitor Center
Located 13 miles west of Fredericksburg, the area around this
visitor center was the scene of the accidental wounding of
Confederate General “Stonewall” Jackson in the May 1863 battle
known as Robert E. Lee’s greatest victory of the Civil War. Audiovisual program, dioramas, and exhibits provide orientation to the
battlegrounds and the war’s impact on civilians and soldiers.
Information is also provided for touring the nearby Wilderness
and Spotsylvania Court House Battlefields.
Fredericksburg Battlefield Visitor Center
This visitor center introduces the extensive action that took place
in the Fredericksburg area during the Civil War. Located on
Sunken Road, a focal point during the Battle of Fredericksburg, the
center serves as a starting point for a tour of the FredericksburgSpotsylvania National Military Park.
Fredericksburg Area Museum and
Cultural Center*
An audio-visual presentation describes the events surrounding the
area’s four major battles, and museum exhibits lend insight into
the experience of soldiers and civilians during this tumultuous
period in American history.
Historic 1816 Town Hall/Market House
and 1927 Bank Building
Spotsylvania Court House Battlefield
Housed in two buildings at the intersection of Princess Anne and William
Streets, the Museum shares the
region’s rich and varied past
from the perspective of local
residents. Exhibits are
designed with a multimedia approach that
encourages engagement and hands-on
learning for all ages.
At Spotsylvania Court House, Union and Confederate troops fought one another for two weeks, incurring
nearly 30,000 casualties. The fighting reached its
peak at the infamous “Bloody Angle,” where soldiers
engaged in 20 hours of fierce, often hand-to-hand
combat.
“Stonewall” Jackson Shrine
The Shrine is the site of Thomas J. Jackson’s death on May 10,
1863, after he was wounded accidentally by his own men at the
Battle of Chancellorsville.
The historic 1816
Town Hall/Market
House long served as
the city’s center of social, commercial and
legal activity. Today,
visitors can view the
original City Council
chamber and three permanent exhibits. British

Region illuminates the fine craftsmanship of local cabinetmakers, silversmiths and artists. Also on display are a collection of
rare Masonic artifacts from George Washington’s era and an
exhibit outlining the preservation and adaptive reuse of the
Museum’s two historic buildings and adjacent Market Square.
The Wilderness Battlefield
The Battle of The Wilderness first pitted General Robert E. Lee
against Union General Ulysses S. Grant and turned the tide of the
war as Grant continued his march, “On to Richmond.”
Fredericksburg Visitor Center
Many groups start their tour at this center with a 15-minute
orientation video which provides an overview to the area’s history
and attractions.
Operated by the City of Fredericksburg Department of Economic Development and Tourism, comprehensive group services are
available through Lura Hill, Manager, Tourism Sales at
1-866-405-3046.
Gari Melchers Home and Studio
at Belmont*
Belmont is the former residence of the American figure
painter, Gari Melchers (1860-1932). The museum consists of
the artist’s home, gardens, the studio and galleries, which
house the largest collection of Melchers’ works anywhere.
The Catherine W. Jones McKann Center, housed in the recently
renovated 1927 Planters National Bank building, features six
permanent exhibits and two changing exhibits. Audio, video
and other multi-media elements enliven local stories reflecting
the nation’s history–the effects of the Revolutionary War, Civil
War and World Wars I and II on civilians; the role of the Rappahannock River in the lives and livelihoods of Virginia tribes and

Journey through the social context of African-American education in Spotsylvania, its transformation through successful
integration, and the closure of the historic John J. Wright Middle
School in 2006, with over 100 exhibits and specialty gift store.
The museum is located inside the original school library of what
is known today as John J. Wright Educational & Cultural Center.
George Washington’s Ferry Farm
On the banks of the Rappahannock River opposite Fredericksburg
is the site of George Washington’s boyhood home. Ferry Farm
(called so for the ferries that crossed the river) is best known as the
setting for the story of young George and the cherry tree. Today,
visitors walk in the steps of Washington and enjoy
18th-century gardens. Ferry Farm is an active
archaeological site where experts in their labs are
available to interact with the visiting public.
During the Civil War, Union soldiers camped at
Ferry Farm, and from those same fields, Union
artillery bombarded the city in 1862. The old
ferry landing was the site of a pontoon bridge
used by the Army of the Potomac on its
way to a crushing defeat in the first Battle of
Fredericksburg.
Lake Anna State Park
Located on Lake Anna in Spotsylvania County, group activities
include nature programs, canoe tours, gold mine tours, and
panning for gold and fishing. Advance
reservations are required for group bookings.
Liberty Town ArtsWorkshop
Liberty Town is home to more than 60
eclectic artists and craftspeople who work,
sell and teach in the 30 private studios spread
throughout the building. Visit with the artists,
watch them work, ask questions and shop
for original one-of-a-kind works of art.
Mary Washington House
Historic Kenmore
In 1772, George Washington purchased a house
from Michael Robinson in Fredericksburg,
Virginia for his mother. Mary Ball Washington
spent her last seventeen years in this comfortable home. The white frame house sits on the
corner of Charles and Lewis Streets and was in
walking distance to Kenmore, home of Mary’s
daughter Betty Washington Lewis. Visitors can
tour the house and see Mary Washington’s “best dressing glass.”
They can explore the garden and visit the original kitchen (a rare
surving 18th-century outbuilding).
Mary Ball Washington was said to be an excellent gardener.
When Preservation Virginia acquired the house in 1891, Mrs.
Washington’s gardens were no longer visible. In 1969, the Garden
Club of Virginia recreated the 18th-century garden as we had no
documentation about Mrs. Washington’s gardens. Today it is a
beautiful setting for a wedding, party or just an afternoon stroll.
Kenmore, one of the most elegant colonial mansions in America, lies in the heart of historic Fredericksburg. Built by patriot Fielding Lewis and his
wife, Betty (the sister of George Washington), the
house contains some of the most elaborate plasterwork from colonial America. It was crafted by
an unknown artist who also completed plasterwork at Mount Vernon.
The house has recently undergone a major restoration, and the
refurnishing is underway. Part of the Kenmore collection of
fine, Virginia-made furniture is on display in the museum
gallery. The house and grounds are open to the public with
tours daily.
Hugh Mercer Apothecary Shop
This 18th-century building restored as the Hugh Mercer Apothecary Shop presents a vivid living history interpretation of colonial medical practices. Visitors can hear about the popular treatment of the day for a lady’s hysteria or a medicine so potent that
it would, according to one wealthy plantation owner, “cheer a
man with a bad wife.”
The National Museum of the
Marine Corps
A monument to honor, courage and commitment, the Museum is
a lasting tribute to U.S. Marines—past, present and future. Situated
on a 135-acre site adjacent to the Marine Corps Base in Quantico,
VA, the Museum’s soaring design evokes the image of the flag
raisers of Iwo Jima and beckons visitors to its 120,000 square foot
structure. World-class interactive exhibits, using the most innovative technology, surround visitors with irreplaceable artifacts and
immerse them in the sights and sounds of Marines in action and
American history.
www.usmcmuseum.org, 877-653-1775. 9am-5pm, 364 days
per year, closed Christmas. No admission charge,
free parking.
James Monroe Museum and
Memorial Library
In the eighteenth century, our nation’s fifth president, James
Monroe, began his illustrious career practicing law in
Fredericksburg. Today, the remarkable collection at the James
Monroe Museum and Memorial Library includes the personal
possessions, furnishings and papers of Monroe and his wife,
Elizabeth. Many of the pieces were purchased while Monroe
served as emissary to France. Learn of Monroe’s amazing
service, through objects from the Revolution to the
White House, and of the family that saved it
for us all.

Spotsylvania Court House
Historic District
The Court House District is rich with history. Battered during
the Civil War, the Spotsylvania Court House itself is restored
today with the original columns.
Another site in the district, The Spotsylvania County Museum,
holds a collection of local artifacts and genealogical records.
Nearby, the restored Spotswood Inn (ca. 1820), has been a
school, post office, tavern, as well as an inn. The Inn was also
military headquarters for General Jubal Early and an observation point for General Robert E. Lee during the war. Christ
Episcopal Church served as a Civil War hospital. The Confederate Cemetery provides a final repose for nearly 600 Confederate
soldiers. Finally, see the old Jail, built in 1781 and moved to its
present site in 1839.
Blue & Gray Brewing Co.
The local brewery offers Fred Red Ale, Blue & Gray Classic
Lager, Falmouth American Pale Ale and Stonewall Stout yearround. There’s always at least one seasonal brew on tap too. The
on-site brewpub, Lee’s Retreat, creatively cooks with the beers
and will host your special event. The brewpub overlooks the
brewhouse so you can watch your beer being made! Free tours
and tastings on designated days or by appointment for groups

This small Revolutionary-era house is built on land once owned
by George Washington. The gambrel roof house contains a fine
collection of 18th-century porcelains, furniture and artwork.
Open Garden Week, the first week in October, and by

Hartwood Winery
The winery offers tours and tastings and special events throughout
the year, such as barrel tastings, mini festivals with guest wineries,
and Spring/Fall celebrations. The winery’s tasting room is available after hours for rent for small groups of no more than 50
people. Hartwood Winery does not do catering, but caterers are
welcome to use the winery’s full service kitchen.
Stafford Civil War Park
Opening in the spring of 2013, this park is dedicated to the story
of the encampments of 135,000+ Union soldies in Stafford
during 1863, a period described by many soldiers then, and
scholars since, as the “Union Army’s Valley Forge”. Here they
recovered from devastating defeats at Fredericksburg and
Chancellorsville and from the debacle of the Mud March.
Despite these setbacks, that Army departed Stafford in June
1863 to win Gettysburg and beyond.
Visitors will see three large earthen artillery batteries built by
the Union Army; the very visible remains of a large Union
winter encampment, an 1830’s bridge remains once used by
soldiers; a late 1700’s quarry and multiple sections of soldier
built corduroy roads.
Sites are easily accessible from nearby parking areas, but does
require short walks through woods. To visit all the unique features of this hallowed ground please allow two hours. There is
no fee to visit the park. The park is located at 400 Mount Hope
Road, Stafford, VA 22554.

Frederisburg
Region
All About the
Nestled at the falls of the Rappahannock River, Fredericksburg and the surrounding region began settlement in the early
1700’s in colonial Virginia’s frontier as a trading
center and inland port. Alexander Spotswood, an
early colonial governor for whom Spotsylvania
County is named, played a large role in the development of the region. In 1730, the Virginia General
Assembly established Fredericksburg as a tobacco
trading station, insuring the economic importance
and well-being of the entire area for years to come.
The busy port soon welcomed a young boy
destined to become a favorite son. George
Washington came with his family in 1738 to live at
Ferry Farm in Stafford County, just across the river
from Fredericksburg. As visitors to the region
discover, much of the Fredericksburg area’s early
history relates to his presence.
The young town was named for Crown Prince
Frederick, son of George II, who did not live to be
king. Instead, Frederick’s son, George III, became
the next king of England, also the last king of the
colonies, thanks in large part to Washington’s
leadership in the American Revolution.
The town and surrounding countryside grew steadily
until the Revolution and then seemed to settle into a
quiet prosperity that was shattered by the Civil War.
Fredericksburg became the most fought over land in
the western hemisphere, and the city changed hands
seven times during the long conflict. Scars from the
war are still visible on buildings and streets.
Yet much of the historic Fredericksburg area withstood war’s ravages. The National Park Service
maintains over 7,000 acres of hallowed land. Over
350 18th- and early 19th-century buildings line
the streets of the city’s 40-block National Historic
District. Many of the Federal-style rowhouses in
the city’s commercial district were built in the early
1800’s after several calamitous fires.
On residential streets, visitors find a charming mix
of 18th-century, Federal, and Victorian homes. The
pride of Fredericksburg citizens in their historic town
is evident in the handsome gardens found also
along city streets. The city’s temperate climate is
punctuated by warm, humid summers and moderate winters with snowfall averaging less than 12
inches a year.
The city population today is 24,000 people. The
population of the neighboring Spotsylvania and
Stafford Counties brings the total area residents to
about 265,000.
The city still serves as a regional center of trade,
though the Rappahannock River no longer plays the
vital economic role it held in colonial days. Many
residents commute daily to jobs in metropolitan
Washington, D.C. Locally, the University of Mary
Washington and Mary Washington Hospital are also
major local employers, as well as reminders of the
continuing Washington family influence.
The Washington Family Tour
(Allow seven hours)
George Washington influenced not only Fredericksburg’s history but also the
new nation he helped form. This tour emphasizes the Washington family and
Fredericksburg’s colonial history. Visit as many as six sites with strong Washington connections.
Guided tours will also note the site of Rocky Lane, on which young Washington
traveled on his way to school; the last of 13 chestnut trees commemorating the
original 13 colonies, planted according to legend, by Washington; and the Mary
Washington Monument.
STOP 1– Your first stop is the Fredericksburg Visitor Center for a free orientation
film. Meet your pre-arranged guide and collect touring literature.
Allow 30 minutes.
STOP 2– George Washington’s Ferry Farm, on the banks of the Rappahannock
River, is the site of Washington’s boyhood home where he, his sister, Betty, and
his brothers Samuel, John and Charles grew up. At the age of 11, George inherited
the farm upon his father’s death and his mother, Mary Ball Washington, lived here
until 1772, when George bought a house in Fredericksburg for her.
At Ferry Farm today, archaeologists have unearthed the remains of the Washington house as well as Indian artifacts dating back 10,000 years, early 18th-century
home sites and Civil War artifacts. There is also a garden featuring plants that
would have been grown during the Washingtons’ residence. Allow 60 minutes.
STOP 3– Rising Sun Tavern, built as a home for Charles Washington about 1760,
was leased as a “proper tavern” in 1792. It remains a lively and entertaining historic site with costumed tavern wenches and male indentured servants adding
to the spirit of cheer and fun. Allow 30 minutes.
STOP 4– Mary Washington House, purchased by Washington for his mother in
1772, is a simple frame house where she spent her last 17 years. Her English-style
garden has been restored and the house contains some of
her prized personal possessions as well as many fine
period pieces. Allow 45 minutes.
STOP 5– Kenmore is the elegant plantation home of
George Washington’s sister, Betty, and her patriot
husband, Colonel Fielding Lewis. The mansion is
known for its ornate plasterwork ceilings and the
Aesop’s fable theme in the dining room overmantel. Washington often visited his family in this
Georgian house. Allow 60 minutes.
STOP 6– Hugh Mercer Apothecary Shop
recreates the medical office of physician and Revolutionary War General, Hugh Mercer. George
Washington befriended
Mercer, an expatriate Scotsman, during the French
and Indian War. When he
began his medical practice
in Fredericksburg, Mercer’s
patients included the Washington family,
until he joined the Continental Army in 1776.
He died heroically at the Battle of Princeton.
Allow 45 minutes.
STOP 7– The Fredericksburg Area Museum offers a glimpse into one important part of George
Washington’s life — his life as a Mason. George
Washington took his Masonic oath at the
Fredericksburg Masonic Lodge No. 4, and the
Fredericksburg Area Museum is proud to display an extraordinary collection of the lodge’s
finest Masonic items, many of which have a
direct link to our nation’s first president and
Fredericksburg’s most famous citizen. Allow
30 minutes.

Discovering Antiques and Art
(Allow seven hours)
Among the numerous fine collections of art and antiques in
Fredericksburg, the furnishings of Kenmore, Gari Melchers
Home and Studio at Belmont, Mary Washington House, James
Monroe Museum and Memorial Library, and St. James House
are among the most outstanding. Combine this six hour tour
with an afternoon of browsing in more than 70 antique shops in
Old Town Fredericksburg. It’s an antiquer’s delight.
STOP 6– The Fredericksburg Area Museum (1816 Town Hall/
Market House & 1927 Bank Building) houses the works of local,
talented artists and artisans who worked in 18th- and 19th-century
Fredericksburg. These cabinetmakers, silversmiths and painters
produced fine goods such as tall clock cases, exquisitely carved
chairs, portraits and silver. The Museum’s newest permanent
exhibition, “British Heritage–American Style: The Decorative
Arts of the Rappahannock River Region 1730-1860” celebrates
their craftsmanship and personal stories. Allow 45 minutes.
STOP 1– Begin at the Fredericksburg Visitor Center for an
orientation film, pre-arranged guide service, and touring literature. Allow 30 minutes.
STOP 7– Gari Melchers Home and Studio at Belmont was the
home of the American Impressionist artist, Gari Melchers. The
18th-century house contains an outstanding collection of European and American antiques; English, Chinese, French and Bavarian
china; Oriental and Savonnerie rugs; and paintings by Frans Snyders, Berthe Morisot and many others. The stone studio displays
the works from Melchers’ prolific career. The formal gardens contain large period rose collections and walking paths. Allow at least
90 minutes.
STOP 2– St. James’ House is furnished with fine 17th- and 18thcentury items, especially appropriate to this diminutive house.
Chinese and Japanese export porcelains, English chests and
tables, and a portrait of George III are featured here. Allow 30
minutes.
STOP 3– Mary Washington House, purchased and improved by
George Washington for his mother in 1772, contains many fine
17th- and 18th-century pieces. Particularly notable are the Virginia-made Ferneyhough chair with doghead arms, a tallcase
clock made by Henry White of Fredericksburg, the Washington
family Wedgewood wheat-patterned china, and Mrs. Washington’s “best dressing glass,” willed to George
at her death. Allow 45 minutes.
STOP 8– Liberty Town Arts Workshop
is a colorful haven for 50 local artists
occupying 30 studios, where you can
visit with artists, watch them work, ask
questions and shop for original, oneof-a-kind works of art.
Option: Paint your own pottery minilesson at Pots & Palettes. You’ll be
given the decorating tools to make
your special piece your very own. After
you paint your pottery, it will be glazed
and fired, making it not only beautiful,
but functional. Allow 60 minutes.
STOP 4– The James Monroe Museum and Memorial Library
displays many of the personal possessions and papers belonging to our nation’s fifth president. Passed through generations
of his family, the items were used by Monroe and his wife in
some of the major events of his long public career and include
fine jewelry, paintings, miniatures, and the Louis XVI furniture
purchased when Monroe was emissary to France.
Allow 30 minutes.
Top: Melchers Home and Studio at Belmont. The 18th-century house
holds many treasured collections. His studio, is located on the beautifully landscaped formal gardens, and displays many of the works of the
artist. A pavilion features group dining, weddings and meetings.
Below right: At Liberty Town Arts Workshop, visitors can peruse the
handiwork of local artists and artisans.
STOP 5– Kenmore was built for Fielding Lewis and his wife Betty,
the sister of George Washington. The elaborate plasterwork ceilings and overmantels are especially notable. Kenmore’s collection
of fine Virginia-made furniture is on view in the museum gallery.
Allow 60 minutes.

Fredericksburg Battlefield Tour
(Allow eight hours)
Strategically located midway between the capital of the Confederacy in Richmond and the U.S. capital in Washington, D.C., Fredericksburg was the scene of four of the most devastating battles
of the Civil War. Nearly 110,000 casualties occurred in the Battles
of Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Wilderness and Spotsylvania Court House. During the war, possession of the city changed
hands seven times.
the city to cover the engineers building the pontoon bridges.
Allow 45 minutes.
STOP 4– The White Oak Museum houses an extensive collection of artifacts from actual battle sites and encampments of
the Civil War. The many items displayed were discarded or lost
while troops were camped or fighting in the Fredericksburg
and Stafford County area. See replicas of soldier huts like those
used as temporary housing during winter encampments. Allow
45 minutes.
STOP 1– The Fredericksburg Area Museum offers visitors exhibits on Civil War history from the viewpoint of the civilian—
a much neglected story of the devastating effects of the war’s
impact on Fredericksburg. The exhibit contains photographs,
weapons, and many family treasures, each with a story. Visitors
can hardly help feeling the sense of misery and despair which
became a part of life in the country’s most fought over city.
Allow 45 minutes.
STOP 5– George Washington’s Ferry Farm is the parcel of land
where the Father of Our Country grew up. Union soldiers
encamped on the fields above the Rappahannock River in view
0f residents of Fredericksburg. Here, at the old ferry landing,
they built pontoon bridges to transport troops across the river
when they attacked the city in 1862. Archaeologists have
uncovered many Civil War artifacts in extensive digs at the site,
as well as trenches dug for protection from the Confederate
artillery. Allow 60 minutes.
STOP 2– Fredericksburg Battlefield Visitor Center presents
a film depicting the actions that took place in and around Fredericksburg. Museum exhibits portray a soldier’s life during the
war, including camp life, religious life, food, medicine, amusements, uniforms and equipment, transportation, communications, and the impact of war on civilians.
STOP 6– Kenmore, in what is now a residential area of Fredericksburg, was originally built in 1775 by Washington’s sister,
Betty, and her husband, Fielding Lewis. It was the scene of much
fighting as the Battle of Fredericksburg raged. First held by Confederate troops, it was fired upon from the east by the attacking
Union Army. Later, the Army of the Potomac captured the house
and it was then fired upon from the west by the Confederates.
Many Civil War artifacts have been uncovered in archaeology
digs on the property, and while used as a hospital during the
Battle of the Wilderness, many an unlucky soldier found a
temporary burial place on the grounds of this great plantation.
Allow 60 minutes.
Also as park staff is available, opt for a short guided walk along
Sunken Road. Here Confederate troops, securely positioned behind the famous stone wall, dispatched more than 8,000 Union
soldiers during the Battle of Fredericksburg. The walk includes
dwellings standing during the battle, a monument to the humanitarian acts of a Confederate soldier, and the National Cemetery
where 15,000 Union soldiers are buried. Allow 90 minutes.
STOP 3– Chatham was an important Federal headquarters and
communication center during the Battle of Fredericksburg. It
was also a hospital where Walt Whitman and Clara Barton assisted the surgeons. Union artillery from this vicinity blasted

Enroute to Spotsylvania
Court House Battlefield, see
Todd’s Tavern, scene of a
May, 1864 cavalry battle
during the Union
advance to the Court House. Allow 15 minutes.
(Allow eight hours)
In this area, on the direct route between Washington and Richmond, were fought four major battles of the Civil War. Two of
the battles—Fredericksburg and Chancellorsville—are considered to be among Confederate General Robert E. Lee’s most
brilliant victories. Yet after the battles of Spotsylvania and the
Wilderness, Union General U.S. Grant destroyed the offensive
power of the Confederates in the relentless push, “On to
Richmond!”
STOP 5– The Spotsylvania Court House Battlefield was scene
to some of the most intense hand-to-hand fighting of the Civil
War. The warring armies struggled for more than 20 hours
over land forever after called “Bloody Angle.” Displays and
exhibits illustrate repeated Federal attempts to break the
Confederate fortifications around Spotsylvania Courthouse.
Allow 45 minutes.
Visit the Court House Historic District, which sits at an intersection controlling the most direct route to Richmond. Allow

Time allowing, see Zion Methodist Church, a Spotsylvania
landmark, and Massaponax Church, where Federal commanders Grant and Meade met to coordinate the army’s move
and where soldiers left still-preserved graffiti on church walls.
Allow 20 minutes.
STOP 1– Chatham, a Georgian plantation home, served as
a vital Federal headquarters, communications center and
hospital during the Battle of Fredericksburg. From its elevated
vantage point in Stafford, Union artillery at Chatham bombarded the town before Union troops advanced over the
Rappahannock River into the streets of Fredericksburg. Allow
45 minutes.
STOP 2– Fredericksburg Battlefield Visitor Center features
museum exhibits and a film that vividly portrays the life of the
citizens and soldiers who lived and fought in the Fredericksburg
area during four major Civil War battles. Allow 30 minutes.
Also as National Park Service staff is available, opt for a short
guided walk along Sunken Road, where Confederate troops
securely positioned behind the famous “Stone Wall” dispatched more than 8,000 Union soldiers during the Battle of
Fredericksburg, and through the National Cemetery, where
15,000 Union troops are buried. Allow 30 minutes.
STOP 6– The “Stonewall” Jackson Shrine, also known as
“Fairfield,” is the location where Jackson was brought after
his fateful wounding at Chancellorsville. He lingered eight
days before he died. The scene became a curiosity for Union
soldiers who camped nearby a year later. Enroute to Jackson
Shrine, see the antebellum homes that line the route of the
Army of the Potomac’s march. Allow 40 minutes.
Optional Driving Tour
STOP 3– The Chancellorsville Battlefield Visitor Center is
located 13 miles west of Fredericksburg and is the site where
Confederate General Thomas “Stonewall” Jackson was mistakenly and mortally wounded here by his own troops in May,
1863. The battle is known as Robert E. Lee’s greatest victory.
Museum exhibits, dioramas, and a film provide an orientation
to the battlegrounds. Allow 30 minutes.
A five mile driving tour connects Marye’s Heights with Prospect Hill, the two areas fought over during the Battle of Fredericksburg. Along the way visitors have the opportunity to see remains
of original Confederate earthworks, examine Civil War period
cannon and learn how General Robert E. Lee had a close brush
with death. At Lee’s command post atop Lee Hill, visitors can
view the city and look at battle exhibits.

A Different Story: An AfricanAmerican Heritage Driving Tour
(Allow two hours)
The African-American heritage tour begins at the Fredericksburg Visitor Center. Starting with a narrative about the first
slaves arriving at what is now called “City Dock,” the tour
encompasses the colonial and Revolutionary period when the
population of slaves and free blacks was about the same as the
white population.
The driving tour travels past Kenmore where George Washington’s brother-in-law, Fielding Lewis, lived. For a while, Lewis ran
a school for slaves because he wanted them to be able to read
the prayer book at church. The tour also passes the Shiloh Old
Site and Shiloh New Site Churches, the Auction Block (where
property, including slaves, was sold), the area where the John
DeBaptiste family lived (early Fredericksburg gentry and businessmen) and the Moncure Conway House in Falmouth (childhood home of the renowned abolitionist, writer and lecturer).
The tour ends with Civil War history and a drive near Sunken
Road, past the National Cemetery where the grave of Urbane Bass
is located. Bass, the first black doctor who volunteered to serve
in the Army, was killed in France in World War I. He was the first
black officer buried in the cemetery.
Trail to Freedom–Following the route of over 10,000
African-American Freedom Seekers. This driving tour
commemorates and interprets the experiences of more
African-American Heritage Trail–Spotsylvania, VA.
Why are black churches so important in this county? How
and when was a high school for black children developed?
Were there black Civil War soldiers and heroes from the
county? These are just a few of the questions answered in
this driving tour of African-American history in Spotsylvania County. An important stop on the tour is the John J.
Wright Education and Cultural Center and Museum, housed
in the renovated building of the only high school that
served African-American children in the county from 1909
to integration beginning in 1968. Along the way, you’ll also
hear about the first known fight on Virginia soil of a full U.S.
Colored regiment within the Army of the Potomac during
the Civil War. A local guide will bring to life the stories of
courage and perseverance that helped shape the history of
the county.
Gardens of Fredericksburg
(Allow 8 hours)
The gardens of the Fredericksburg area offer something for everyone–from the casual observer to the most avid of gardeners.
Formal gardens, herb gardens, a rose garden and a children’s garden all await your discovery.
STOP 1– Gari Melchers Home and Studio at Belmont, situated
across the Rappahannock River from Fredericksburg, was the
home of the American Impressionist artist, Gari Melchers. The
27-acre estate includes woodlands,
fields and several outbuildings, as
well as formal gardens with boxwood edged beds and walks. A path
network takes visitors through a
restored woodland walk and around
two native grassland wildlife habitats.
The gardens are colorful year ‘round,
starting with thousands of bulbs in
the spring. In late May and early
June more than 30 historic roses
bloom in beds, on arbors and trellises. Old-fashioned annuals and perennials continue the show through
the summer and fall. Old fields have
been seeded in native grasses and
wildflowers, providing habitat for
birds, butterflies and small mammals. Garden tours can be tailored to
special interests, such as landscape
history, roses, bulbs, wildlife habitats,
etc. Allow 90 minutes for house and
garden tour.
than 10,000 slaves who passed through this region between
April and September 1862. Many of the slaves who passed
through took steamships from Aquia Landing in Stafford
County, arriving in Alexandria, VA or Washington, D.C.
When the Union troops arrived in Stafford County and the
town of Falmouth in April 1862, there was a great deal of
activity on the south side of the Rappahanock River in the
City of Fredericksburg. Docked steamboats and bridges
across the river were set fire by Confederates, as they settled
into a defensive position. As recalled by slave John Washinton, “No one could be seen on the streets but the colord
people, and every one of them seemed to be in the best of
humors...” Slaves throughout the region seemed unafraid of
the Union army, instead rejoicing in anticipation of the
opportunity for freedom.
Aquia Landing, a pivotal transportation point between the
southern states and northern ports, initially served as a
domestic slave trade portal. However this site was later
transformed into a gateway to freedom through which
thousands of fugitive slaves passed enroute to liberty.
Background: The scenic Rappahannock River flows through Spotsyvania,
Stafford and the City of Fredericksburg offering many recreational
opportunities.

STOP 2– Chatham Manor’s gardens reflect not antebellum
prosperity, but rather post-war recovery. Initially designed in
the 1920’s by America’s foremost female landscape architect,
Ellen Biddle Shipman, the gardens were the ultimate symbol
of Chatham’s transformation from working farm to elegant
residence. The basic design and structures from the 1920’s
remain. The pattern of beds and plantings reflect changes
made over the next sixty years. Allow 60 minutes.
STOP 3– Kenmore, a plantation house built in the 1770s by
George Washington’s sister, Betty, and her husband, patriot
Fielding Lewis, became a museum in 1922. The gardens were
the first restoration by the Garden Club of Virginia in 1924,
garden tour.
STOP 5– The Hugh Mercer Apothecary Shop, an 18th-century
physician’s office, is naturally a place where period, medicinal
plants and herbs are cultivated. Plantings in small beds are
bordered by boxwood and brick paths laid out in an English
geometric style. Signage at the garden’s entrance provides
information for the visitor, listing the location of each plant
and its 18th-century medicinal use. Allow 45 minutes.
STOP 6– George Washington’s Ferry Farm was our first
president’s boyhood home. Here, his love for fishing in the
Rappahannock River, for horseback riding and learning to
farm and survey nurtured the character of the Father of our
Country. Today, children and adults can imagine the Washingtons’ life on the farm through educational programs, archaeology and the garden with its 18th-century plants. Corn, cotton, tobacco, peanuts, and herbs would have been staples in
the farm garden of the 1700s. Ferry Farm is an environmental
classroom with native vegetation, wildlife, wilderness trails and
educational gardens. Allow 60 minutes.
OPTIONAL STOP– Bradford Square Roses at the Fredericksburg
Area Museum’s Frejus Place garden features hybrid teas, floribundas and grandiflores. These roses were planted and are
maintained by the Rappahannock Rose Society.
OPTIONAL STOP– The Rising Sun Tavern garden features a charming dove-cote and the lush, pleasant shade of a grape arbor.
The Ghosts of Fredericksburg
beginning Historic Garden Week in Virginia. Visitors can
stroll through the Wilderness Walk, designed in an 18th-century style with native plants, or rest on the open lawn, imagining a bustling 1700’s plantation yard. The terrace, with trees
and perennial flower beds, offers an atmosphere of relaxation
and a chance to escape into the past. Allow 90 minutes for
house tour and self-guided tours of the Bissell gallery and
the gardens.
STOP 4– The Mary Washington House is an integral part of the
Gardens of Fredericksburg tour. Virginians love their gardens,
and Mary Washington, mother of
George Washington, was no exception. She delighted in her garden
and spent time working in it whenever possible. As was typical of the
18th century, Mary Washington had
a kitchen garden where vegetables,
greens and herbs were produced for
the household. She also had a pleasure garden lined with boxwood in
the preferred style of the period. The
Garden Club of Virginia undertook
the restoration in 1967. Under the
direction of Mr. Ralph E. Griswold,
an 18th-century English-style garden
was created, featuring a rectangular
grass lawn bordered with beds of
appropriate flowers and greenery.

Ghost legends are part of our American heritage and Fredericksburg certainly has its share of legends. Famous voices and spirits from Fredericksburg’s past remain. For the believer or the
skeptic, this tour will show a haunting dimension to our history.
STOP 1– The Fredericksburg Visitor Center’s free orientation
film, tour materials and pre-arranged guide service are at your
disposal. This building was used in 1863 by Federal occupation
troops as a detention site for men too young or old to serve in
the Confederate Army. Two apparitions have been reported at
the center in recent years. Allow 30 minutes.
STOP 2– The Rising Sun Tavern, built by Charles Washington, George’s youngest brother, was once the center of colonial life in Fredericksburg. Today it remains a lively and entertaining historic site with ghostly inhabitants who maintain
the spirit of cheer and mischief at the tavern. Ghostly pranks
are attested to by the costumed tavern wenches. Allow 45
minutes.
STOP 3– Chatham, the 18th-century Stafford manor home of
William Fitzhugh, overlooks the Rappahannock River and the
old port city of Fredericksburg. Even though it was the scene of
death and suffering during the Civil War, Chatham’s spirit is a
more romantic figure. The legend involves a wealthy English
girl, her suitor, a drysalter, and her father’s good friend, General
George Washington. Although she eventually married a man
according to her family’s wishes, she promised on her deathbed
to return to walk at Chatham every seven years in memory of

ROCK HILL PLANTATION HOUSE
Welcome to Rock Hill Plantation House. Nestled in the gentle folds
of northwestern Stafford’s undulating countryside, the house and
grounds have all the advantages of a rural, pastoral setting yet remain
easily accessible to Interstate 95 and Route 17.
Inside the main house there is an antique furnished elegant master
suite set aside just for the bride to prepare herself for her special
day. Located within the grounds are three ponds and a 20 x 28 foot
gazebo, plus a tastefully appointed hall with a 20 x 60 foot veranda
overlooking a pool with fountain.
As we only book one event for any given day, you will never have to
share the property with other guests. In the true sense of Southern
hospitality, we want you to relax and feel free to sit on the porches
and watch the sun set over the pasture, or walk around the front under the shade of the large maple trees, or stroll down to the ponds to
be greeted by the ducks and geese. Our sincere goal is to make your
event something very special to remember.

TEAM BUILDING
TEAM BUILDING
Here’s how it works:
Your group will enjoy a customized tour with licensed
battlefield guides, experiencing one of America’s famous
battlefield/historical landmarks from the ground level in
Fredericksburg, VA, just as the officers and soldiers did.
Following the tour, your group will convene in a workshop
session to dissect and discuss the various aspects of the battle
or event – What went right, what went wrong, what could have
been done differently – all related back in terms of the business
application to your organization – helping to move your team
forward. This is the ultimate in interactive learning!
Contact Training for Winners or the Fredericksburg Regional
Tourism Partnership today to learn more from the lessons of
history. As the saying goes, “We should learn from the mistakes
of history, lest we are doomed to repeat them.”

PARAGON VILLAGE 12/SPLITSVILLE–The team building event
consists of a bowling game called Crazy Bowl designed by Splitsville.
Crazy Bowl has up to 8 people per team and offers a variety of
different bowling challenges.
GARY HERNBROTH BATTLEFIELDS TO BUSINESS
America’s battlefields and historic landmarks–hallowed ground
where destinies were created and great struggles took place–are
more than just vacant fields, marble statues, and preserved military
artifacts. They all contain important lessons for today’s generation
to learn from. This unique program allows your organization to pull
those lessons from the battlefield and apply them to your business or
organization.
Surprisingly, many aspects of America’s historic battles bear
similarities to the challenges facing businesses today: The role
of leadership & command, communication, planning, execution,
supply, responsibilities, teamwork, support, working through crises,
dealing with “shift happens,” overcoming obstacles and adversity,
proper use of resources, etc.
“Battlefields-to-Business,” developed by Gary Hernbroth, Chief
Motivating Officer of Training for Winners in conjunction with Scott
Walker of Hallowed Ground Tours, affords your group a hands-on,
interactive experience like no other, combining the benefits of a
“you-are-there” feeling of history with the urgency of today’s
business challenges.
