MARKETING PROGRAM
Comprehensive Marketing Seminar
Stephen Walls, McCombs School of Business, University of Texas, Austin
The revolution that has transformed marketing is driven by a number of factors: increased consumer
resistance to traditional marketing methods, the proliferation of communication channels and everchanging legal constraints. In response, leading consumer-oriented companies are dramatically adjusting
their marketing mix to take better advantage of less traditional, but ultimately more effective, consumer
interaction channels. To be effective, your marketing plan has to be formalized. The essence of the process is that it
moves from the general to the specific; from the overall objectives of the organization down to the individual action
plan for a part of one marketing program. This seminar will address the foundations, characteristics, process models and
performance analysis of comprehensive marketing planning.

POS Revolution
Jerry Sheldon, Analyst, IHL Group
In contemporary retailing, the winds of change are picking up strength in POS technology. Major shifts are taking place
in software and hardware as we know it. Many changes seemed unthinkable just a few years ago. Often referred to as
Point of Service, the new dynamics include cloud computing and mobility in what has been termed a digital arms race
between retailers and tech-savvy shoppers. Technology advancements and shifts in shopper preferences do not occur in
convenient five to seven year cycles. As a result, POS upgrade plans can become sharply out of synch with marketplace
realities. With the move to mobile devices, omnichannel experiences and a focus on customer loyalty, more is being
demanded of POS systems.

“If your store was for sale, would you be able to sell it?” Your store’s future is driven through
tangibles and intangibles. Explore removing the “ticky-tacky” presence by incorporating intangible
ideas that manifest into tangible opportunities, and vice versa. Regardless of your store’s situation,
through best marketing practices, operational situations, failures and successes, you must lead your business forward.
Refocus your every-day approach to “sell” your store. Mold your store to fit the occasion and explore relevant scenarios.
Recognize the difference between VAT (Valued Added Tangibles) and VAI (Value Added Intangibles). Learn to look past the
static brick and mortar approach (VAT) to integrate the kinetic nuance of subtleties (VAI) into your store’s strategic plan

Permission Email Marketing Peer-to-Peer Best Practices
Kari Erpenbach, Marketing Manager, University of Minnesota; Store-to-store sharing
The Direct Marketing Association puts email marketing’s ROI for 2011 at $40.56 for every $1 invested. Email marketing
is the single most widely used form of marketing for major retailers. Permission email marketing is the most highly
valued of all email marketing and it works for a variety of reasons: it allows targeting, is data driven, drives direct sales,
builds relationships, loyalty and trust, and it supports sales in other channels.Yet a survey of ICBA stores found that 70%
are not using permission email in their marketing. It’s time to get real, share some best permission email practices and
make permission email marketing happen at your store.

“Over the next five years the secret to retail success will come from knowing the impact of decisions before they take effect.”
~ Ronojoy Guha, General Manager Retail Consulting,Wipro Technologies
Leading retailers have found that analytically driven strategies deliver strong, measurable results. Unfortunately, many
retailers view management of this resource as a challenge instead of an asset. The result is that data and analytics are
underused and underappreciated. The truth is that simply adding technology solutions on top of existing processes
and culture will not produce the best results. Retailers need to cultivate a culture that understands and promotes the
capabilities of analytics in order to shape favorable outcomes. The end game is the creation of a retail organization
where analytics help drive revenue growth, profitability, customer loyalty and innovation.

STRATEGIC DIRECTION & ACADEMIC RESOURCES
Disruptive Technology & Textbook Rental
Sergio Monsalve, Principal, Norwest Venture Partners; Mehdi Maghsoodnia, CEO, BookRenter
Disruptive Technology: Since the financial crisis began, education is the only area of the economy in
which consumer debt has continued to rise. Disruption flourishes where those who are underserved can
be better served through innovative technology. To counter skyrocketing educational costs, e-learning and
distance learning emerged to “scale the teacher,” and textbooks were sold online for a fraction of the price.
Universities and colleges need to leverage social, gaming and other technologies to remain relevant. Disruptive online,
mobile and in-store commerce tools lower the cost of education, revive campus commerce, and deliver the course
materials of today and tomorrow. Textbook Rental: The rapid growth of rental caught everyone off guard—everyone
except the new competitors whose business model is based on rental. According to OnCampus Research, in 2009,
three-hundred college stores offer textbook rentals. For fall 2011 it was estimated that 3,000 college stores would offer
rental. Rental is the most rapidly adopted business process in the history of the college store industry.

Campus eBookstore – An Industry Solution for Digital Course Materials & College Stores
Marty Duncan, Program Manager, ICBA
Textbooks have become a commodity product in a highly competitive market. College stores are losing
market share with our legacy business of hard copy textbooks. In terms of disciplines, courses and titles, a
relatively small group of subjects deliver a large share of the market. Competitors are aimed at that small
subject target. Digital is aimed at that small subject target. As students are migrating more and more
of their purchases to online sales, digital by its very nature is evolving to be sold online, accessed online, delivered online
and used online. Distribution of digital content is already bypassing college stores. Campus eBookstore, a centralized
marketplace where digital content can be bought and sold, delivers an industry-wide solution.

If your school is forming or executing a course material strategy and your store is not part of that process, committee
or task force, then you must become part of it. If your school does not yet have such a process, then your store should
initiate it. Whatever the case may be (school or system level) building relationships with the person you report to,
school IT, library, academic provost (or similar positions), etc., is essential. Learn from stores that are succeeding with
this initiative, the challenges they face and methods they are working at to succeed. How do you position your store in
this process? Who are the relevant players? What are their primary interests in terms of course materials? What are the
key issues?
