Dear Friend,
When most of us think about superheroes, we picture the stuff of fantasy: the ability to fly, shape-shift, or leap tall buildings with a single bound.
But what if we changed the definition of a superhero to include someone who can shoot hoops for hours, cook up a killer pot of spaghetti, or learn how to
photograph in bright midday sun? What if we thought less about invisible planes and Kryptonite, and more about expertise around checkers and throwing a
tight spiral? And what if the single most important superpower was simply showing up?
All of you—our valuable partners, generous donors, and dedicated volunteers—embrace this idea that consistent and caring adults make a tangible difference in
the lives of young people. You know that whether a kid is trying out for the soccer team, starting a new school, or dealing with important family or academic
issues, they need a trusted adult to just be there.
We are pleased to present to you our 2014 Annual Report, which highlights the successes we’ve achieved. Together, we’ve supported the everyday heroics of Bigs
and Littles. Together, we’ve:
• Raised Awareness: You acted as our tireless ambassadors, sharing the research-based fact that having a Big Brother or Big Sister can help kids
stay engaged in school, reduce or avoid drug use, participate in leadership and/or volunteer positions, and strengthen relationships with teachers,
friends and family.
• Walked the Talk: Every Big Brother and Big Sister in the Greater Twin Cities rolled up his or her sleeves and did the work. Last year alone, thousands of
volunteers donated more than 62,088 hours to support and mentoring youth, and while you can’t put a price tag on caring, that time alone
has a value of $1.54 million. And generous partners—Fortune 500 companies, cultural nonprofits, sports teams, small businesses, community
foundations and philanthropists—leveraged that time with additional support in donated time and resources.
• Supported Positive Outcomes: With your help, our Littles have navigated the transitions to adulthood—touring college campuses, taking their
college boards, landing awesome internships, and finding meaningful summer jobs. And they’ve had amazing life experiences along the way—
attending plays and concerts, cheering sports teams, and creating powerful art.
Communication and connection are indeed superpowers, and Bigs are truly superheroes. Research shows again and again that one additional caring adult can
make a real difference in the life of a child facing adversity. And when kids win, we all win. Please accept our sincere gratitude for your sustained efforts, and join

HAYYUU & KYLE
If it’s Tuesday, you’ll find Kyle Kauma heading out for a few hours of laughing and learning with his good friend Hayyuu. Kyle, a
University of Minnesota sophomore, catches the bus on even the chilliest of mornings to connect with his third-grade Little at the
Sullivan Community School. Their lunchtime meeting time means that Kyle has to juggle his busy class schedule, but it’s all worth it
when Hayyuu bounces into the room, ready for action. The Big and Little dive into homework, chat about school stuff, and take the
occasional break to play a game or just crack each other up. Sometimes they get serious, talking about goals, dreams and the future.
They brainstorm ways to help Hayyuu focus in class and stay on a positive path. Hayyuu’s second-grade teacher Cindy Liu spotted
how special Kyle and Hayyuu’s friendship was right from the start. “Kyle’s time and effort made a huge difference in Hayyuu’s life.
Hayyuu became more positive and started enjoying school and learning.” Hayuu’s mom echoed Ms. Liu’s observations, excitedly telling
the teacher that “Hayyuu changed! Hayyuu changed!” But the best spokesperson for this Big/Little match is Hayyuu himself. “We
laugh a lot,” says Hayyuu. “I like that Kyle helps me catch up on homework. I know he goes to college and I want to go to college just
like him. Kyle tells me I can do anything.”

BRIAN & LUKE
Who knew that milkshakes could lead to friendship? Six years ago, nine-year-old Brian was
matched with his Big, Luke Walford. The pair were introduced at Brian’s house, then headed
to Fuddrucker’s for some burgers and bonding, and the rest is history. Luke quickly adopted
the title of Brian’s Number One Fan, and cheered him on at karate tournaments, on the
football field and on the basketball court. The Big spent hours on the golf course with his
Little, teaching him the finer points of the game. And then Luke introduced Brian to
photography, sparking such an interest that Brian now calls the hours he spends with his
camera “his passion.” But the duo’s friendship transcends sports and hobbies, tapping into
the very things that make us human. “Luke has included me in the most important days
of his life. I knew he was going to propose and I was in his wedding.” said Brian. The two
are so close that when Luke and his wife learned they were expecting, they trusted Brian
with the news, even sharing that their baby would be born close to Brian’s birthday! In the
meantime, the two continue their Sunday time together, rarely missing a week. They’ve been
in the stands at a St. Paul Saints game, they’ve pounded the pavement capturing the metro’s
personality in their street photography, they’ve discussed Brian’s paid internship as a
photographer with Robbinsdale Public Schools, and they’ve dreamed about the adventure
life holds after Brian’s high school graduation. To Luke, the time spent with his Little is a
given: “Brian is family, and I will be there for him.” Brian echoes this connection, simply
stating, “I know that if I wouldn’t have met Luke my life would not be the same. He has
never let me down.”

NA’EEMA & AIMEE
Middle school is a time of change. Navigating an unfamiliar and large building, not to
mention the tricky social scene, can be challenging. So Aimee’s match with Na’eema came
at just the right moment. The twelve-year-old Little looked up to her young adult Big, and
came to count on the stability, friendship and fun of their weekly outings. Every Monday,
Aimee and Na’eema met to study or shoot the breeze. Even when Na’eema’s family moved
multiple times, Aimee always followed, providing consistency and connection in each
new place. When Na’eema’s father unexpectedly passed away, Aimee provided an extra
helping of comfort and companionship, seeking out additional resources to help guide
Na’eema through her grief. Aimee’s support, combined with Na’eema’s tenacity, has paid
off. Na’eema is currently involved in Upward Bound, an academic and college preparatory
program. Through her participation in various BBBS Education & Enrichment (E&E)
programs, Na’eema attends career events, and even hit the road for an E & E college tour
to Chicago and Madison, opening her eyes to a myriad of post-secondary possibilities.
Next up for Ne’eema? Pursuing a nursing degree. Aimee is thrilled with her Little’s
can-do attitude, and has no doubt her Little will achieve her dreams. And even though
their official BBBS relationship soon ends, their bond knows no boundaries. The time
Aimee and Na’ eema have shared has made them more than a match; they are sisters.

relationship.
Often they happen one-onone. But sometimes Bigs and
Littles gather together to learn.
Sometimes they work toward
a greater goal. Sometimes one
individual or organization has a
big impact. And sometimes it’s
just about a fun event. We think
you’ll see on their faces that
every time it happens there’s
cause for celebration.
A COP WHO CARES: CHIEF
OF POLICE SCOTT NADEAU
SKOL, VIKINGS!
Talk about a touchdown! Thanks to a ticket donation
by a group of very generous gridiron fans and
friends of BBBS, 44 lucky matches enjoyed a day
of Minnesota Vikings football and fun at the TCF
Stadium. The Bigs and Littles cheered on the Vikes
to victory against the North Carolina Panthers,
and also visited the Hall of Fame room for nachos,
hot dogs and a few surprises. Team mascot Victor
the Viking, complete with his mighty helmet and
flowing blonde braids, greeted the matches with
fist-bumps, and the Vikings Cheerleaders dialed up
the enthusiasm. The Littles received cool souvenir
caps, and everyone even got to hit the field to watch
the players warm up! The outing was part of the
“Sports Buddies” program, which leverages sports
and fitness to sustain successful matches, particularly
for boys and men. Go, team!
Scott Nadeau’s first job as a beat cop brought him
face-to-face with residents, where he learned that
most people share a need for community. To foster
this connection in his own life, he volunteered as a
Big Brother, and was matched with Marcus. After
years of meaningful fun and friendship with his
Little, he stepped into his new role as Columbia
Heights Police Chief and brought BBBS along with
him. The community’s classrooms are now dotted
with matches; over half of Scott’s current staff
participate as Bigs. “It’s gratifying to see the great
relationships the officers have with kids through
BBBS,” said Scott. Never one to rest on his laurels,
he plans to extend the program to the Fire
Department next. His best advice to mentors is to
“Just be there. Just care. Kids don’t need advice as
much as they need presence. Just show up.” And the
best news? Showing up works. Columbia Heights’
crime rates are plummeting, and arrests
of juveniles are down by 50%.

HIGH SCHOOL MENTORING
CHARTING A COURSE
FOR COLLEGE
Between the SAT, ACT, applications, college visits
and tough decisions, post-secondary exploration can
make anyone’s head spin. This is particularly true for
first-generation college hopefuls, whose families may
lack experience with the dizzying journey toward
higher education. That’s why Big Brothers Big Sisters
established the BBBS College Club. This initiative
invites high school-age Littles, their Bigs and their
parents/caretakers to participate in college tours,
supportive workshops, and more. Monica Billy,
BBBS Education and College Access Coordinator,
says the Club also helps Littles “decide what they
want from the college experience, and learn which
schools provide it.” In partnership with their
parents/caretakers, Bigs, teachers and other
important adults, Littles can tap into the College
Club to feel confident about their school search, and
turn their post-secondary dreams into reality.
BBBS HITS THE RED CARPET
It was anything but a hard-knock life for the lucky
Bigs and Littles who attended an exclusive preview
of the new major motion picture “Annie” prior to
its holiday release. Over 100 matches were among
the first in the nation to see the much-anticipated
film at the Mall of America. The Littles received
cool custom t-shirts, nibbled on snacks and laughed
with their Bigs. But before the opening credits, the
audience got the surprise of their lives: Annie’s lead
actors Jamie Foxx and Quvenzhané Wallis, as well
director Will Gluck, showed up to say hello, hang out
and share some positive energy! The Oscar-winning
Foxx, who is also a national spokesperson for Big
Brothers Big Sisters, strolled the aisles, high-fiving
and grabbing a few handfuls of popcorn along
the way. When the film’s theme song “Tomorrow”
swelled on the soundtrack, the entire audience was
happy for today: a night of movie stars, magic and
magnificent matches.
What’s cooler to a little kid than a teenager? BBBS
High School Mentoring Program leverages this idol
worship to everybody’s advantage, pairing elementary
school children with students in grades ten through
twelve. Once a week, these teen Bigs hop on a bus or
just walk over to a local grade school to hang out and
help out their Littles. These magnificent matches
talk about everything from fractions to Frozen,
homonyms to Halloween costumes. And when
these “near-peers” meet, everybody wins. Elementary
school kids who usually could not participate in
a mentoring program due to frequent household
moves, scheduling conflicts or language barriers are
served right within their school walls. High school
students’ confidence, maturity and empathy grows as
they model solid academic and social skills to their
Littles, and the teens are also eligible to take part in
cool BBBS Education & Enrichment programming.
There are no costs to any of the participants, yet
everyone walks away from the experience infinitely
richer. In the wise words of one BBBS High
School mentor: “I’m very proud that I’m with this
organization. It’s nice to be thought of as a person
who is valuable to someone else who needs you.”

Together, we sustained and strengthened the impact of
our Community-Based, School-Based and Education &
Enrichment initiatives. We welcomed new team members,
supporters, ambassadors, and most importantly, Bigs. And
we laid the groundwork for an exciting future filled with
purpose and leadership.
This progress is reflected in the preceding financial overview.
Although there is always room for growth and innovation,
we feel proud of our year’s work, and look forward to an
expansive and ambitious 2015 and beyond.
