THE TRIBUTES
IN OPENING OF THE FESTIVAL:
TRIBUTE TO IM KWONKWON-TAEK
“1999, first Asian Film Festival of Deauville, Shin Sang Ok retrospective. 2008, tenth
anniversary edition, Im Kwon-taek retrospective.
Shin Sang-ok and Im Kwon-taek, the two greatest classic filmmakers of Korea, who
symbolize the ancestral culture of the Land of the Clear Morning - a more precise
translation than « of the morning calm ».
Both were born during the Japanese occupation, have experienced World War II, the
influence of America and its collaborators, the Korean War and the two great
dictatorships. No doubt all this influenced the bond to their nation, their country, the
burning passion for the Korean civilisation at the very core of their works.
Heartbreaking works - whether tragedies, historical or contemporary films. Confucianism
is deeply rooted also in several of their films, and it is no hazard that Im Kwon-taek’s first
great picture is “Mandala” in 1981, without mentioning “Come, Come Upward” or
“Festival”.
A major political film by Im Kwon-taek, “Gilsodom”, following his most personal films in
the first part of his career, “The man without a flag”, “Broken nose”, “Alaska”, “The
Genealogy”. The success of Shin Sang Ok’s retrospective lead to a second one two years
later, and we are pretty sure the success of this first Im Kwon-taek retrospective will lead
to a second one, which will enable to discover as well, among other films, “Diary of King
Yonsan”, “Fly High Run Far” and “The Taebeck Mountain”.
This retrospective will confirm as being masterpieces several already established works
such as “Surrogate Mother”, “Adada”, “The Mill on the hill”, “Sopyonje”, “Chunhyang”,
“Strokes of Fire” and the unfairly unknown “Low Life”.
Some exciting days ahead then for those who haven’t seen these films, upheld by the
same faith in their country, its roots, and the magnificent plants and trees still there. Im
Kwon-taek could himself be compared to one of these oak trees.
And his 101st film is expected very, very soon, just as fiery, passionate, lyrical.
See you tomorrow,”
Pierre Rissient

To celebrate its 10th edition, the Festival will pay a Tribute to the emblematic Korean
filmmaker IM KWONKWON-TAEK with the screening
screening of his 100th film untitled « CHUN NYUN
HACK » (BEYOND THE YEARS) on the opening night.

Im Kwon-taek was born in Jangseong, Jeollanam-do (a southern province of Korea) on
May 2, 1936. He grew up in the city of Gwanju where he graduated from senior high
school. During the Korean War, his family suffered considerable hardships and losses,
and he moved in search of work, first to Pusan, and then to Seoul in 1955. Here he met
director CHUNG Chang-wha and started to work as a production assistant on his film
“The Story of Janghwa & Hongryun” (1956). With the director’s support, he completed his
first feature “Farewell to the Duman River” in 1962.
He worked prolifically as a director in various popular genres until the slump experienced
by Korean cinema in the late 1970s. During this period, which followed two decades of
rapid growth, Im Kwon-taek’s career blossomed with the success of his first dramatic
feature films, poignant and humanistic social dramas that would become the source of
his international reputation. Films such as “Genealogy” (1978), “The Hidden Hero” (1979),
“Pursuit of Death” (1980) and “Mandala” (1981) were widely championed by critics both at
home and internationally. True international fame came with 1986’s “Surrogate Woman”,
“Come, Come Upward” (1989) and “Sopyonje” (1993), movies that consolidated Im Kwontaek’s position as Korea’s most widely recognized and acclaimed director. His
“Chunhyang” (2000) was the first Korean film in competition at the Cannes Film Festival.
Im Kwon-taek has won numerous international awards, including Best Director at the
2002 Cannes Film Festival for “Strokes of Fire” (aka “Chihwaseon”). In 2004, his film “Low
Life” was selected in competition at the Venice Film Festival and one year later he was the
recipient of an honorary Golden Bear Award at the Berlin Film Festival.

minimal music and starts his career as a composer and begins to make, play, and

“Information” to the world as a solo artist. Since then, he has released “Piano Stories”, “My
Lost City”, “Chijo No Rakuen”, “Works I”, “Shoot the Violist” and many other albums and

Hayao Miyazaki (1984), he composes over forty film soundtracks, including “Princess
Mononoke” and “My Neighbor Totoro” by Hayao Miyazaki, “Hana-Bi,” “Kikujiro” and other
films by Takeshi Kitano. He wins many awards, including five Japanese Academy Awards
for Best Music for Film.
In addition to his recent works for films such as “Brother” by Takeshi Kitano, “Spirited

An actor, a scriptscript-writer and a Chinese director together
in one noble servant of the art of Cinema

Born January 5th, 1963 in Tangshan, China into an army family, Jiang Wen shifted to
Beijing at the age of six. In 1980, he entered China's foremost acting school, the Central
Academy of Drama, graduating in 1984. That same year he started acting both on stage,
with the China Youth Theater, and in film with “The Last Empress”, directed by Chan
Jialin.
He starred in “Hibiscus Town” (1984, directed by Xie Jin), “Le palanquin des larmes”
(1987, directed by French director Jacques Dorfmann), “Black Snow” (1990, directed by
Xie Fei) or “The Last Eunuch” (1990, directed by Tian Zhuang-zhuang). Other than “Red
Sorghum” in 1987 co-starring Gong Li, Jiang also collaborated with Zhang Yimou for his
1996 film “Keep Cool”.
Jiang Wen became renowned in China for his starring role in the 1992 TV series “A Native
of Beijing in New York”, which made him one of the well-loved actors of his generation.
Two years later, he wrote and directed his first film, “In the Heat of the Sun”, adapted
from a novel by Wang Shuo, a tale set in the Cultural Revolution. Its young lead actor Xia
Yu won the Best Actor prize at the Venice Film Festival and the film garnered six Golden
Horse Awards in Taiwan. His second feature, “Devils on the Doorstep”, set during the
Japanese occupation of China in the early 1940s, earned him the Grand Prix in the 2000
Cannes Film Festival together with an international success but also some protests from
the Chinese and Japanese authorities. In 2003, Jiang Wen was a member of the jury of the
Cannes Film Festival, presided by French movie and stage director Patrice Chéreau. His
third feature film, “The Sun Also Rises” was presented in competition at the last Venice

“For numerous years, the revival of cinema, the renewed faith one can put in it, the will to
make movies and many answers to the questions we ask ourselves everyday come from
Asia. Japan, Taiwan, China, Korea - there our trust in cinema is back, and so is the faith
one can have in its powers. This is why I come to Deauville: to watch films, love them and
stand up for them.”

420 pupils from the schools of Deauville will enjoy a « Special School Day » at the Asian
Film Festival on March 13th.
This total immersion in the Asian world will enable the children to discover the many

Arts and culture education: a shared responsibility
Each year, the city develops an arts and culture education programme for schools, in
concert with the teachers.
The transmission of values and knowledge, the flowering of every child, the desire to give
a sense of taste are the common goals for both the education and city teams.
Permanent features appear every year in the education programme:
enabling to discover the arts,
valuing and providing access to books – a key access to culture
informing and educating about the challenges of our planet
initiating children to chest playing
providing access to live performances.
In addition the children are invited to every cultural event suitable for their age and
organized by the City, such as the Asian Film Festival.
___________________________________________________________________________
Last February 4th, the Minister of Culture Christine Albanel and the Minister of Education
Xavier Darcos launched together a governmental programme for developing
developing arts and
culture education.
In order to bring this programme to fruition, both the ministers talked during the meeting
about the role local authorities are to play: “Arts and culture education means equal
partnerships, a totally shared responsibility as far as the three major actors are
concerned: Ministry of National Education, Ministry of Culture and Communication, local
authorities.”
Such an education is no longer only to be provided at school and by school; culture
educating means educating with culture and with the help of anything from the cultural
44
institutions of the State to the local authorities, non-profit organizations as well as
creation industries such as the publishing or the moving picture industry. The city of
Deauville is happy to note it has developed such a partnerships policy on education for
several years.

PRESENTATION OF THE “ASIAN VILLAGE”
The Deauville International Centre is preparing to fly the colours of Asia for the 9th Asian Film
Festival, 2007.
The “Asia Village”, a space of over 3000m² is organised along four main themes: “Arts and
Culture”, Asian Gastronomy”, “Economy and Training”, and “Health and Well-being”.
The different cultures and the riches of Asia are represented via countries such as Japan, Malaysia,
Cambodia, Vietnam, Burma/Myanmar, China, India, South Korea, Indonesia, Nepal, & Thailand.
Arts and culture
Our modern tradition has led us to refer to cinema as the “7th” or “Cinematographic Art”. The Asia
Village will present the other arts reflecting the differences of sensitivity and aestheticism that
make up Asian culture.
This area will emphasise the different artistic sensibilities in Asia, between tradition and
modernity.
Alain Kremski will grace the Asian Film Festival with his presence, offering his recitals entitled “The
mountain of great purity - 30 minutes of serenity…” A journey through the steppes and to the
secret monasteries of Asia by this musician, invited to the most highly renowned international
festivals. Alain Kremski will perform recitals for sacred Buddhist bowls on a collection of rare
instruments from the 18th and 19th Centuries. He draws his inspiration from the musical traditions
of India, Bali and Japan. Inner strength is awakened by the depth and mystery of the resonance of
the gongs. The Buddhist bowls, of Japanese, Tibetan and Chinese origin, enhance meditation and
promote healing. Tranquillity… Immensity… Well-being… A moment of Pleasure…
The Centre for Cultural Cooperation EURASIAT will present an exhibition-sale of pictures (paintings
and drawings in Indian ink) made by contemporary Mongolian artists on the theme of the horse
and nomadic life, and examples of the traditional garb of Mongolian nomads. The display is
flanked by the suits of armour of two mediaeval warriors from the time of Genghis Khan, one
authentic, the other recreated. Change of scenery and flights of imagination guaranteed!
Béatrice Brézal will present her work in the Asia Village. Béatrice Ayrolles-Frezal, a teacher of fine
art in the Collège JB de la Salle in Lyon, in January 1999, lived for 4 years in Toronto in Canada and
3 years in Thailand. Her painting, which is inspired by the colours, the light and the culture of
Thailand and the Buddhist religion, situated mid-way between realism and abstraction, witnesses
to her artistic sensibilities. Using acrylics, thick wax and gold leaf, her paintings, most of them
large format, afford a glimpse of Thailand. Béartice Brézal now lives in Rouen.
Maurice Douard will also enlighten this Arts and Culture area with his work. When looking at his
work, one has the impression of observing movement, whereas everything is in fact immobile, but
deceptively immobile, representing an instant of life’s dynamism. His work seizes this fleeting
48
instant, depicting daily life through the prism of his vision. The incomprehensible paradox of our
existence, our doubts, the anxiety of waiting… all are born of elementary particles, in the hope of
a response, we dress them in colours, strip them and clothe them anew… the hours pass and this
alternation helps us to bear our suffering.
France
France Orient Export,
Export bringing the rich variety of Asian craftsmanship within reach: Chinese
dresses, Vietnamese costumes for women and men, porcelain dolls, Maneki Neko, terracotta army,
classic sabres, collectible katanas, kimonos, nunchaku etc.
Style du Japon
Japon will present craft objects straight from different regions of Japan: table arts, goldleaf lacquered objects and ceramics from Arita, various accessories, jewellery, ideas for gifts etc.
Young and old alike are invited to demonstrations of origami and colouring. Editions Ecce will
present an entire collection of works dealing with the traditional art of Ikebana and health and
well-being.
Also on the programme:
-
The Manga Café,
Café a concept unique in Europe, combining relaxation and discovery of the
manga (Japanese comic strips).
-
The Japanese Embassy echoing the N.A.C. (Nihonjinkai Artists Club), which is celebrating its
25th anniversary with an exhibition of Japanese art.
-
La Maison du Mekong and a whole range of craft objects from South East Asia.
-
BollywoodBollywood-In:
In a community organisation working for the promotion of Indian culture.
-
Eurachance and its decorative craftwork of Chinese origin, jewellery and demonstrations of
calligraphy.
-
Truffaut and its bonsais, orchids, and Japanese fish
Economy & training
The economy and training area will host a space entirely given over to Asian students studying in
Normandy, whether they come from Caen, Rouen, or Le Havre. The students will thus have an
opportunity not only to meet each other, but also economic actors, training organizations,
businesses, tourist information centres etc. They will also come to present their training, talk
about their expectations, and explain why they chose to come to France.
Three hundred Asian students will be present at the festival. They will have the opportunity of
discovering the Asia Village, and will participate in intercultural Franco-Asian meetings. The PUN Le Pôle Universitaire Normand (Normandy Universities Centre) and the Centre d’Enseignement du
Français pour Etrangers or CEFE (Centre for Learning French as a Foreign Language) will present
the different training courses tending to promote Western/Asian exchange.
49
Catering “The Sushi bar”
The whole Sushi Bar team is delighted to welcome you to the Deauville International Centre during
the Asian Film Festival and will be presenting dishes representative of different Asian countries:
Japanese sushi, miso soup, steamed ravioli, chicken curry and perfumed rice and also typical sweet
dainties such as dorayaki, sesame seed nougat, and the essential coconut pearls. The brothers
Alex and Roland SIV, scions of a big Asian catering family, created the Sushi Bar in 2000. With
support from the judicious advice and experience of Joëlle QUENTIN, former head of production
for a major Parisian Asian caterer, they have been offering an events organisation service, KAITEN,
since January 2006. The restaurant and Asia Lounge will be open throughout the Festival.
Health and WellWell-being
This space is divided into two areas:
- A “Zen attitude” area dedicated to relaxation, reflexology, massage and traditional Asian
medicine.
On the programme: the Centre Tuina offers traditional Chinese Tuina massages, Chinese plantar
reflexology and Asieco will present a complete range of teas and ginseng.
- “Asian Sports”: the practise of martial arts has long been considered an excellent form of
physical activity, a source of good health, leading to genuine philosophical fulfilment. It is become
increasingly popular in France where there are now 580,000 members of judo clubs, 200,000
karate club members, 60,000 Aikido club members and 50,000 Tae Kwon Do practitioners, to
name but a few. Over the four days of the festival, parallel to screenings, martial arts clubs from
the region will be laying on displays and demonstrations.
Aikido in PONTPONT-L’ÉVÊQUE
Presented by Aïkido de Pont l’Évêque. Aikido is a martial art developing a technique of defence
using one’s bare hands against one or several enemies, armed or otherwise. This combat technique
has a singular characteristic in comparison with the other, purely physical, traditional martial arts.
The practice of aikido involves not opposing one’s adversary, but absorbing his energy to which
one adds one’s own energy. Aikido requires no particular physical aptitudes and can be practised
by everyone.

The Bushi or Samurai, Japanese warriors, had noticed that, during unexpected attacks, it was the
rapidity with which one drew one’s sabre and launched a counter-attack that made it possible to
gain a fundamental advantage in combat. This observation led to the development iai-do.
Iaido is a combination of techniques, from fencing to Japanese sabre, consisting of drawing one’s
sword and cutting one’s adversary in the same continuous movement.
Judo Jujitsu represented by the Club de Judo de Pont-l’Évêque. Judo or the “gentle way” is a martial
art and a combat sport originating in Japan, essentially composed of throwing, self-control,
strangle-holds and locking techniques.
Table Tennis and Karate
Table tennis, a sport symbolic of Asia, and above all of China, will be represented by the Union
Sportive de Pont-l’Évêque. Demonstrations and mini-tournaments in the Asia Village, along with
numerous Karate demonstrations organised by Mr. Vaneste.
