Heloise Brown Canter, beloved by
all who knew her, peacefully departed
this life Tuesday, February 9, 1999,
after surviving a stroke in 1993.
She was born April 26, 1918, in
Houston and grew up in Eagle Lake.
Heloise was agracious and genteel
lady, who was ever mindful of the
needs of others. She always found
things to be thankful for and was so
very good to her family.
She was honored as having
achieved distinction in Business Administration at Mary-Hardin-Baylor's 100th year celebration in 1945,
soon after completing her studies in
the field.
Her achievements included being
was the First woman, in Houston and
the entire Gulf Coast area, to become
a CPA, passing the Texas CPA Examination in May of 1942; 1947,
named national president of the
American Women's Society of Certified Public Accountants (AWSCPA),
being a member since 1942; in 1948
became the first woman CPA in Arkansas; appointed an official delegate
of the American Institute of CPAs to
the first Inter-American Accounting
Conference in Puerto Rico in 1949;
second conference held in Mexico
City in 1951; and the third, which was
held on Sao Paulo in 1954; official
delegate of AWSCPA to the second
Inter-American Accounting Conference in Mexico City, represented by
20 nations; the only female member of
the advisory board of the International
Accountants Society; first president
of the Texas Chapter of the American
Society of Women Accountants
(AS W A) and first presiding officer of
the Houston chapter twice; convention chairman for the 1952 annual
meeting for AWSCPA/ASWA and
the co-chairman of the publicity committee for the American Institute of
Accountants Convention.
Other accomplishments include
from 1949 to 1983, she served as Financial Counsel for the American Society of Medical Technologists, with
accounting practice spanning over 30
years and her loyal clients were also
her friends; many of them with her
from the beginning; featured both on
annual televised "call-in" tax programs and in professional publications; a member of the Altrusa Club,^
charitable organization, serving as
treasurer and director and providing
income tax service free of charge to
veteran patients at the VA Hospital;
recognized by the Texas Society of
CPAs for 50 years of membership
from 1942 to 1992; honored by the
ASWA for 40 years of distinguished
service to the accounting profession
and again 10 years later; the only life
member of the Houston Chapter;
being honored by the Texas State
Briggs of Lake Jackson and Randy
and Kay Briggs of La Grange; sisters,
Joann Cone of Angieton, Frances
Stevens of Yoakum, and Catherine
Dunn of Fort Worth; brothers, Horace
Weaver of Alvin and Wilson Weaver
of Santee, California; grandchildren,
Wendy Baty of Brazoria, Scott Briggs
of Lake Jackson, Susan Briggs of
Austin, Kitti Ebner of Bryan and
Melinda Ditta and Stacy Tyree of La
Grange; 10 great-grandchildren; a
host of nieces; nephews; and other
relatives and loved ones.
Funeral services were held Friday,
February 12, at 2 p.m. from the Chapel
of Dulany Funeral Home in Eagle
Lake with Chris Benjamin and Curt
Gunz from Lake Jackson Church of
Christ officiating.
Interment followed at the Lissie
Cemetery.
Dulany Funeral Home in Eagle
Lake was in charge of arrangements.
Pallbearers were Scott Briggs, Pat
Cone, Sherman, Joe and Lance Weaver and Chuck Baty.

Josephine Inez Briggs, 83, of Lake
Jackson, passed away Tuesday, February 9, 1999, at Lake Jackson Health
Care Center.
She was born August 30, 1915, in
San Felipe, to Joseph Edward and
Emily Catherine (Armstrong)
Weaver.
Josephine was a resident of Austin
and Colorado Counties, particularly
Eagle Lake, most of her life, moving
to Brazoria County in 1985.
She and Leroy Benjamin Briggs
were married June 27,1936, in Lissie.
Josephine led a distinguished career in Practical Nursing, serving Drs.
J.R. and J.C. Laughlin and the former
Laughlin Hospital in Eagle Lake.
She was raised in the Church of
Christ and involved in establishing a
Church of Christ in Eagle Lake, and
later attended church in Columbus.
Josephine was preceded in death
by her parents; husband (August 8,
1984); sisters, Lottie Roe, EffieTasker, Alice Adkins and Lorena Halbritter; and a brother, Sherman Weaver.
Survivors include her sons and
daughters-in-law, Gary and Carolyn

passed away Monday, February 8,
1999, at Oak Bluff Village in Columbus.
He was born February 24,1921, in
Ellingerto JohnL. and Minnie Koenig
Muesse.
Leroy was a member of St. Paul
Lutheran Church of Columbus, life
member of Veterans of Foreign Wars
Post 6113 (serving eight terms as
commander), life member of American Legion Post 383 (serving two
terms as commander), All State Commander of the Veterans of Foreign
Wars 1985, life member of D.A.V.
Post 229 La Grange, and a member of
the 70th Infantry Division Association, Woodman of the World Lodge
#007 Columbus, Texas Sportsman
Association, AARP and the Texas
German Society.
While in the service from Jan.
1940 to August 1944, he was decorated with the following medals:
American Defense Service Medal,
Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal with
Overseas Device, Good Conduct
Medal (Army), World War Two Victory Medal, Expert Infantryman's
Badge, Expert and Sharpshooter
Badge on Infantry Weapons.
He was instrumental in forming
the South Central Texas Baseball
League after World War II and served
as its first president, becoming a
member of the "Old Timers Baseball
Hall of Fame" of Halletts ville.
He was preceded in death by his
parents; and a brother, Alfred Muesse.
Survivors include his daughters
and sons-in-law, Glenda and Robert
Mica of Flatonia and Marsha and

outstanding example of personal and
professional integrity.
Also, the Houston Chapter of the
Texas Society of CPAs recognized her
for 40 continuous years of dedication
and support and named her an honorary lifetime member; named an honorary 50-year member of American
Institute of CPAs; named Houston's
Outstanding Business Woman for
1947 and honored by the Houston
Business and Professional Women's
Club of Houston, of which she was a
member; cited by the American Society of Medical Technologist in 1972
in recognition of her dedication,
which was "above and beyond expectations"; in 1984, recognized as a
"^Voman of Excellence" by the Federation of Houston Professional
Women; in 1992 the Education Foundation of AWSCPA/ASWA established a "Heloise Brown Canter Laurels Scholarship Fund."
April 18, 1954, she married Dr.
Joseph Canter and suffered through
his loss on December 19, 1954. Following his death, she helped raise his
son, Ron Canter, putting him through
Rice University. Ron was killed during the Vietnam Conflict
She was preceded in death by her
sisters, Virginia "Sugar" Welch and
husband, Donald G. Welch, and is
survived by their daughters, Sharon S.
Welch of Bellaire and Donni WelchRawls and husband, Rob, and their
sons, Mark and Justin of Jacksonville,
Florida; preceded in death by her sister, Juanita"Sis"Towell and husband,
Roy Towell, and is survived by their
daughters, Cindy Sheen and husband,
Mike, and their sons, Brian and Danny
Sheen of Houston; Sandra Higel and
husband, Tom, of Colorado Springs,
Colorado; sons, Ron Canter and wife
Joan, Douglas Futch and wife, Janelle,
and their daughters, Brianna and Shaina of Atlanta, Georgia, Jeff Futch and
wife Jeanne; preceded in death by a
brother, Phil C. Brown, and survived
by his wife, Charlene, and their children, Penny Alexander and husband,
Ron; their son, Ryan, and daughter,
Kelsey, Susan Clayton and husband,
Neal; and Tonya and Scott Brown of
California.
She was loved and respected by all
who knew her and will be deeply
missed.
Funeral services were held Monday, February 15, at 10 a.m. from the
Second Baptist Church of Houston.
Interment followed in Forest Park
Lawndale Cemetery.

Jimmy M. Sanchez Sr., 70, of San Angelodied Monday, February 8,1999,
in a local hospital.
He was bom November 27, 1928, in Eagle Lake.
Sanchez was a heavy equipment operator in the construction business and
a member of Tree of Life Church.
Survivors include his wife, Ermelinda Sanchez; two sons, Jimmy Sanchez
Jr. and Jesse Sanchez; two daughters Rose and Nora Samarripa, all of San
Angelo; nine grandchildren; three brothers, Modesto Sanchez of Flatonia and
Ricky Sanchez and Joe Henry Sanchez of Foreman, Arkansas; step-mother,
Margie Sanchez of Foreman; and sister, Bonnie Serrano of Houston.
Prayer services were held Wednesday, February 10, and Thursday, February 11, at Johnson's Funeral Home Chapel.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Friday, February 12, at 2 p.m. at the
Tree of Life Church with Rev. Walt Landers officiating.
Burial followed in Fairmount Cemetery.
Johnson's Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

accepted for persons interested in becoming certified to teach the Texas
Youth Tobacco Awareness Program
to youth who have been cited and
found guilty of tobacco possession, a
Class C misdemeanor.
Once trained, instructors will be
able to offer the curricu lum as an alternative to community service, fines
and the possible loss of a teen's drivers
license. The two-day training will be
held in various locations through July.

Joshua Ryan weighed seven
pounds, 14 ounces and measured 20
inches at birth.
He was welcomed home by Aubree Raylyn, three years old; and Seth
Nathaniel, one and one-half.

and Daryll C. Jacobs Sr. of El Campo.
Paternal grandparents are Raymond
and Martha Navarro Sr. of Bay City.
