February 2012
ATHLETE OF THE MONTH:
JAKE ALLEGRINI
NTC VICE PRESIDENT
Lets start at the beginning- how did the NTC come to be?
I think the four of us all had a common goal of formalizing the group that had already begun to train together. Having
Danielle around, who had experience in a club previously, really gave us the confidence to give it a go. I would say the
club was officially formed over breakfast one morning at the Fog Island Cafe. Since then it's been a humbling
experience seeing all the excitement and happiness we have created.
You are the VP of the club; where do you see the Club headed this year?
I think the club will certainly continue to grow in membership as well as sponsorship. I envision the club using the
valuable experience gained from our first year to hone our offerings to the members and the community. My
philosophy is to try not to overextend ourselves or grow too fast, too soon. This way we can really dedicate the proper
attention required to make the events we put on a quality experience for the athletes and their supporters.
How has the club helped you in your training? I think it's important to remember why we really are into this sport.
I think for most of us, it's because it's fun. The club makes it fun. We ride together, we run together, and we meet at the
brewery together. I talk to the "old timers" (Jim and Ed :-) ) and they tell of the days of solo long days. No thanks.
You are an Ironman! What has that meant to you? Until Ben was born, finishing Ironman Lake Placid was right up
there with one of the most amazing days of my life. I still think some days,"did I really do that?". It also proved to me
that if you put your mind to it, you really can do anything. It also reinforced to me what
a great group of athletes and supporters we have on Nantucket
Congratulations on the birth of your son Ben!! How are you doing balancing everything?
It's been different from last year. Because my time is somewhat limited, I find that while the quantity of training may
have decreased, my quality of training has improved tremendously. I have a new-found love for my bike trainer. Alisa
and I try our best to avoid the "tag, your-it" trap. Unfortunately, Ben will not be a triathlete.
The swimming and cycling would simply get in the way of his true ambition as an NFL placekicker.
What advice can you give to someone who has signed up for the Nantucket Triathlon as their first race?
Don't cross the yellow line
