“When I was diagnosed with lung cancer, my goal was
to find the best surgeon and a hospital with the most advanced
technology to cure my condition. I also wanted to get back
to an active lifestyle as quickly as possible.

Aria Health
all has brought brisker weather and brilliant
foliage. The days are getting shorter, the air
is getting colder, and we may be spending more time
indoors. But as autumn shades into winter, it’s especially
important to stay active and get plenty of fresh air and
sunshine to keep our bodies healthy and our spirits lifted.
For tips on exercising in the cooler weather, and some
recipes that take advantage of fall’s bountiful harvest, go
to YourAriaHealth.org and check out some of our many
new social media channel features and promotions as
described on page 32.
Also in this issue, we’re bringing you a comprehensive
overview of Aria Health’s cardiovascular services across
our system and at the Torresdale Campus Heart Center.
Beginning on page 4, you will learn more about Aria’s
skilled providers and team-based approach to general
cardiology, interventional cardiology, electrophysiology
services, and cardiothoracic surgery, as well as
cardiopulmonary rehabilitation.
We’re also very excited to announce the launch of our
low-dose CT scan lung cancer screening program. For the
first time ever, people who are at high risk for developing
the disease can undergo screening to identify cancers at
a very early stage, when they’re much more likely to be
cured. Aria is among the first hospitals in the region—and
the country—to offer this screening to our patients. To
read about the new program, which we’re offering in
tandem with smoking cessation support, go to page 26.
In this issue, you’ll also meet many of the surgeons,
physicians, nurses, and staff who make Aria such a special
place. Like Michelle Rubeo, the Environmental Services
Manager at Aria Health-Torresdale, whose brave struggle
with breast cancer was one story that has helped inspire
her colleagues to don pink gloves (and pink glasses, pink
fall 2012
I was also relieved to know that Aria had a
minimally invasive, robotic surgery center that
eliminated an extensive stay in the hospital.
And once I arrived at Aria and met Dr. Chang, I
knew I made the right decision. He made me
relax and feel comfortable, and took his
time explaining everything.
If you’re interested in finding out a bit more about why
Aria is a leader in minimally invasive and robotic-assisted
surgery, go to page 15. You’ll learn how an exceptional
surgical team and system-wide technology advances
have extended our surgical services to an even wider
range of patients.
Thanks to Dr. Chang and Aria Health,
I am cancer-free – back to my life
and back on my bike.”
You may have heard that it’s getting more difficult to find
a primary care doctor these days. But that’s not a problem
at Aria. Turn to page 18 to read about how we have
expanded our primary care network, and how to make an
appointment if you’re looking for a new physician.
— Genny, Cherry Hill, NJ
Getting plenty of sleep is another cornerstone of good
health. And if that’s a problem for you, you’re in luck,
because you have access to Aria’s well-regarded, longestablished sleep medicine program. Go to page 28 to
read more.
Thank you for your continued interest and for being an
integral part of the many communities we serve. We hope
you enjoy this issue of Aria magazine. And don’t forget
to fill out our survey, which you’ll find in the middle of the
publication.
Yours in good health,
Recently named a Philadelphia magazine ‘Top Doc’
for the second consecutive year, Dr. Richard Chang
specializes in the surgical treatment of diseases of the
lung and chest. He is also a member of Aria’s skilled
surgical team, which performs the broadest number
of robotic-assisted surgical procedures in the region,
yielding better results and fewer side effects than
conventional surgeries.

Aria Health’s Cardiovascular Team
Provides Leading-Edge and Personal Care
So he drove to Pennsylvania from Ohio, met with Dr. Marinchak,
one of Dr. Spielman’s associates, and decided to go ahead with
the procedure. Four weeks after treatment, Rabold has not
experienced any more episodes of atrial fibrillation. “It’s given
me peace of mind and I sleep much more restfully at night and
into the morning hours,” he says. “I would highly recommend
anyone who’s suffering from atrial fibrillation to have it done.”
Says Dr. Marinchak: “He had a great result so far, and so far he’s
been free of atrial fibrillation.”
From the outset, Rabold adds, his experience with Aria Health
reassured him, and once he’d made his decision, he felt good
about it. “I was very pleased and impressed with my team
at Aria.” Rabold was also touched by the competence and
compassion of the nurse who took care of him pre- and postoperatively. “He stopped in to see me in my room, just to see
how I was doing, and wished me good luck. That was a gesture
that wasn’t necessary, and really demonstrates the kind of
people who are at Aria. I can tell that they take great pride in
what they’re doing, and I was very comforted in that.”
Because of Dr. Zama’s unique expertise, over the years patients
have traveled from Europe, Africa, South America, and Asia to
be treated by him. And one of his visions for Aria, he says, is for
the hospital to become a destination for patients from around
the world seeking excellent care.
“We’re living in a world that is increasingly global, and medical
tourism is really going to play a strong part in global health
care,” he says. “I would consider Aria at the forefront of that.”
Aria’s team has been able to bring patients to Pennsylvania from
overseas and have them ready for surgery in less than a week.
Dr. Zama will speak with the patient and his or her family by
phone, and the rest of the team manages administrative issues
like obtaining the patient’s medical records. “All of this can really
be done within a 24- to 48-hour period, so there’s no lag time
and the patients love this,” he says. “We even have someone
who is waiting for them at the airport.”
Traveling for Treatment
Aria electrophysiologist Roger A. Marinchak, MD, FACC, (right) discusses the inner workings of the heart with C. Steven Rabold.
Through Aria's International Medicine Program, Steven traveled from his home in Fort Myers, FL, to Northeast Philadelphia to
undergo a robotic-driven catheter ablation procedure performed by Dr. Marinchak to treat his cardiac arrhythmia.
S
teven Rabold had been living with atrial fibrillation
since 2003. Known as “A-Fib”, this is the most common
type of irregular heartbeat, and occurs when the heart’s upper
chambers and beat rapidly and irregularly, allowing blood to
pool and as a result, sharply increasing stroke risk.
Rabold, an attorney practicing in Illyria, Ohio, who spends
half the year in Fort Myers, Florida, had been managing the
condition with blood-thinning medication. But his episodes of
arrhythmia had become more frequent and more troublesome.
“I led a normal life except when I had these bouts of atrial
fibrillation, which would wake me in the early morning hours,”
he explains.
4
fall 2012
He decided to get in touch with an old friend, Nche Zama, MD,
PhD, who recently joined Aria Health as Chief of Cardiothoracic
Surgery, to learn about his options. Dr. Zama told him about
Aria’s electrophysiology program and the work Scott Spielman,
MD, Director of the Electrophysiology Laboratory at Aria HealthTorresdale, and his colleagues Roger Marinchak, MD, FACC, and
Bradley Bacik, DO, FACC, are doing to treat heart arrhythmias.
Using the Stereotaxis Epoch System, Dr. Spielman and his team
are able to locate the source of an abnormal heart rhythm and
ablate, or destroy, the tissue that’s responsible. “They were
getting excellent outcomes, and he said I ought to consider it,”
Rabold recalls.
Rabold is just one of a growing number of patients who have
traveled hundreds—or even thousands—of miles to be treated
at the Heart Center at Aria Health-Torresdale. Dr. Zama, who
specializes in high-risk cardiothoracic surgery, has operated on
several patients referred by the Heart Institute of the Caribbean
in Kingston, Jamaica. One patient, Robert Terrelonge, a man in his
80s who required complex valve surgery plus a coronary bypass,
was out of the hospital and back home in Jamaica within four days
of being treated. “We’ve had nothing but tremendous feedback
from his doctors and his family members,” Dr. Zama says.
Dr. Zama is an expert in reoperative surgery, which is necessary
when a patient has already had surgery for a particular problem,
and that problem has recurred. “This actually ratchets up the
severity of the operation to a much higher level,” he says. “The risk
of complications goes way up.” He is also one of few surgeons
in the world performing the Dor procedure, which employs
special surgical techniques to treat heart failure by restoring the
geometry of the ventricles. Dr. Zama learned the procedure from
its originator, cardiothoracic surgeon Dr. Vincent Dor.
Aria Health Heart Center nurse Kara O'Brien (left) poses for

Medicine Program, Robert traveled from his home in Jamaica,
to Northeast Philadelphia to undergo a surgical procedure
performed by cardiothoracic surgeon, Dr. Nche Zama.

doing the procedure in the United States. Fewer than
5 percent of coronary bypass operations performed
in the US are done using the procedure he pioneered,
according to Dr. Pym, although surgeons in Europe and
Japan have been faster to adopt the all-artery approach.
Dr. Pym performs about half of his bypass procedures
“off-pump,” meaning he operates on the heart while it is
still beating, eliminating the need to divert the blood to a
heart-lung machine. This reduces the risk of many types
of complications, including stroke.
Patients recovering from any type of heart surgery, as
well as those who have heart failure or a heart attack
or have undergone angioplasty, are eligible for Aria’s
Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation Program. Many patients
are referred to the program from outside facilities.
(From left to right): Aria Health's Cardiothoracic Surgeons,
John Pym, MD, Nche Zama, MD, PhD, and Chirag Badami, MD.
“We have all the data that we need on them before they arrive,”
he adds. “Within 12 to 24 hours, they have the operation.”
Patients who come to Aria for coronary bypass surgery also
have the option of having all of their grafts made from arteries,
rather than veins. This procedure results in significantly better
outcomes than the older approach of using vein grafts as well as
arterial grafts, notes Aria Health cardiothoracic surgeon
John Pym, MD.
In the 1980s, Dr. Pym was the first surgeon to perform an allartery bypass surgery, and he remains one of the few surgeons

Rehab staff members begin working with patients in
the hospital, and then follow up with them for six to 12
weeks after hospital discharge. The program consists of
an hour of exercise and a half-hour of education, three
times a week.
“It used to be that cardiac rehabilitation was thought of
as just an exercise program, but now it’s much more than
that,” says Susan Stahl, Manager of Cardiopulmonary
Rehabilitation at Aria.
It’s important to address heart patients’ mental as well as
physical health, Stahl explains. “There’s a high incidence
of depression after a cardiac event, and we help patients
through that difficult time.”
Often, she adds, just interacting with other heart patients
at Aria’s Wellness Center can make a big difference.
“They can communicate with fellow patients who are
going through the same thing, there is a kind of bond
they form from that common experience,” she adds.
Aria Health Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation Manager,
Susan Stahl (right), and Andrea Donahue, RN,
monitor and supervise exercise and education
programs for patients with heart disease and
chronic respiratory disease.
After cardiac rehabilitation, patients can continue to be active
by taking part in a maintenance exercise program at the
fitness center, and many of them do, Stahl adds. “Our cardiac
rehab patients really inspire each other to continue a healthy
lifestyle and they have inspired many of us by their dedication
and resilience.”
Patients who are at risk of heart disease have a better shot at
prevention than ever before, notes Robert Schlesinger, MD,
Chief of the Section of Cardiovascular Disease at Aria Health.
The same goes for individuals who have had heart attacks, he
adds, and Aria Health’s cardiology team is a powerful partner in
prevention. “We stress smoking cessation and emphasize careful
management of cholesterol and diabetes, as well as eating a
healthy diet, exercising, and maintaining a healthy weight,”
Dr. Schlesinger says. “All of these things will cut down on the
recurrence of heart disease.”
Excellence in Electrophysiology
Aria Health’s electrophysiology program, which provided Rabold’s
care, is increasingly being recognized as one of the nation’s best,
with extraordinary outcomes thanks both to the hospital’s leadingedge robotic equipment and its highly experienced, innovative
team of clinicians. “This program is truly state-of-the-art, and
unsurpassed anywhere else in the area,” says Dr. Schlesinger.

Cardiovascular Disease at Aria Health and the Medical
Director of Aria's Cardiac Rehabilitation Program.

Dr. Uricchio says, patients clearly appreciate both the expertise of
Aria’s cath lab staff and the attractive, comfortable setting. “The patient
satisfaction has always been spectacular because they are really pleased
with their experience.”
Says Jane Slaterbeck, the Nursing Director of the Catheterization
Laboratory, “I’ve worked in a lot of academic medical centers, and I
think the service we provide here feels very much like that, very highquality, and progressive.”
Bradley Bacik, DO, FACC, and the team of electrophysiologists at Aria Health recently performed their 50th robotic
catheter ablation procedure using the Stereotaxis Epoch system. Aria was the first health system on the east coast
to utilize this state-of-the-art platform.
The Stereotaxis Magnetic Navigation System allows
Aria’s interventional cardiologists to diagnose and treat
arrhythmias with unprecedented safety and precision.
“You can tackle much more difficult arrhythmias with the
Stereotaxis,” says Dr. Spielman.
The system “allows one to get a catheter tip to sites inside the
complex internal anatomy with less force, more precision and less risk
of causing perforation injury to structures that one doesn’t want to
ablate or hurt, and achieve a better outcome with less procedure time
and less radiation exposure,” Dr. Marinchak explains.
“I’m really excited that
we’ve had the ability to
get the robotic system
up and running,” he
adds. “We’ve taken more
complex ablation cases
than we ever dreamed
we’d be doing two or
three years ago.”
Scott Spielman, MD, FACC,
Director of Aria Health
Electrophysiology Labratory

fall 2012
“That is a great advantage
of coming to Aria’s Heart
Center as compared to
somewhere else,” says
Dr. Bacik. “The robot
allows us to get to places
in the heart that we’ve
not been able to get to
easily before. We are able to do complex ablations, including atrial
fibrillation ablation and ventricular tachycardia ablation, and repeat
or redo procedures for previous failed ablations elsewhere.”
In fact, according to Dr. Bacik, 20 percent of the ablation
procedures done at Aria Health are “redos.”
Dr. Marinchak has more than 20 years of experience in another
specialized area of electrophysiology: removing implanted
devices from the heart using laser lead extraction, a complex
and potentially risky procedure.
“We have a full cardiothoracic team involved in getting complex
device systems out of the body safely and efficiently,” Dr. Bacik says.
Experience and Personal Care
Cardiac catheterization, in which a tube is passed into the heart
via a vein in the arm or leg, usually to diagnose and treat blood
vessel blockages within the organ, is another area where Aria
Health’s cardiologists have unique, specialized experience.
Few interventional cardiologists solely specialize in performing
catheterizations, notes Chip Uricchio, MD, Director of Aria’s
Catheterization Lab. But for Dr. Uricchio, it’s all catheterizations,
all the time. He estimates he’s performed upwards of 11,000.
“All I’ve done is catheterization work, and I’ve done somewhere
between 450 and 600 cases per year for 23 years.”
“The cath lab here is really beautiful,” he adds. “This is by
far the nicest facility I’ve had the opportunity to work in.” And,
At the same time, Slaterbeck adds, the dedication and warmth of Aria
Health’s physicians, nurses and other staff mean patients enjoy the
benefits of community-based care.
“We’re a little more hands on than an academic institution, where you’d
have fellows and physician assistants taking care of you,” says Chirag
Badami, MD, a cardiothoracic surgeon at Aria Health who recently
completed his training at the University of California-Los Angeles. “Our
patients can reach us without jumping through any hoops. We’re willing to
be available for everybody. You have world-class care, with a home-town
feel to it.”
“It’s really the best of both worlds,” agrees Andrew C. Friedman, DO, a
cardiologist who has been on staff at Aria for 30 years. “It’s that blend
of the smallness and the comfort of a community hospital, with all the
leading-edge technology as well.”
Interventional Cardiologist Francis J. (Chip) Uricchio, MD,
performs a cardiac catheterization at the Heart Center at
Aria Health-Torresdale.
Dr. Friedman’s approach is to assist
in the coordination of care for his
patients, beyond their cardiac needs.
“My partner and I are more of the
old school ‘I want to take care of my
patients’ mentality” he says.
“I don’t want to be just a consultant.
I want to be the attending physician
where I take care of my patient from
beginning to end.”
Dr. Friedman also directs Aria Health’s
internal medicine residency program.
“We’ve trained all these physicians
who’ve now stayed in the area and
practice and live here,” he adds.

Cardiovascular Care in the Community
Aria’s cardiologists also serve the Northeast Philadelphia
community at The Professional Court Outpatient Center,
located at 10160 Bustleton Avenue, as well as at its hospital’s
Frankford Campus.
The office has also won national certification from the
Intersocietal Accreditation Commission (IAC), an accreditation
agency that evaluates the quality of medical testing facilities,
for its echocardiography and nuclear/PET diagnostic services.
“There is a high incidence of heart disease in our community,
so it’s been satisfying to be able to offer this service, and we
do it in a way that’s very comfortable to the patient,” says Aria
cardiologist Jonathan Cox, MD. “It’s a very congenial office, a lot
of the patients have been coming here for many years, and it’s
like a family.”
And if a patient requires more specialized testing or treatment,
Dr. Cox adds, he can refer them to Aria’s world-class network of
cardiovascular specialists. “With one phone call, I can mobilize all
of the more sophisticated techniques that patients might need.”
He and his fellow cardiologists have excellent communication
with other Aria Health physicians, including patients’ primary
care physicians as well as cardiologists providing more
specialized care, Dr. Cox says. “We involve the primary care
physicians every step of the way.”
When patients do need additional testing, much of it is available
just a few steps away, he adds. “MRIs are across the hall,
blood drawing is just two doors down, and CAT scanning is
available next door,” Dr. Cox says. “For the patients, that’s very
convenient…all of these services are available right here in one
office, so you don’t have to transport patients, which is good
for them and for me, because I get immediate feedback and I’m
reading the studies myself.”
Agrees Aria cardiologist Jeffrey Kegel, MD, who directs the
Outpatient Cardiovascular Clinic at the Frankford Campus, “It’s an
extremely cooperative, collaborative program that we have here.”
Dr. Kegel has developed a program for caring for heart failure
patients that serves as a model throughout the Aria Health
system, and is developing similar programs to help patients
with diabetes and those with chronic obstructive pulmonary
disease. The goal of these programs, he explains, is to give
patients the tools they need to manage their own care and
stay as healthy as possible. The clinic also provides nearly
every type of test and service heart disease patients might
need right on site. “It makes life easier for patients,” he said.
And Aria Health has also taken steps to reach out to the
communities it serves with its annual Heart Walk. “We know
that hypertension and diabetes are two chronic conditions
that are problematic for our hospital service area residents,”
explains Christine Winn, Executive Director of Aria HealthTorresdale. “The heart walk is a terrific time for our health
system to come together to increase awareness about heart
disease as well as the various programs we have across the
system in order to address the most complex and routine
aspects of the disease.”
Aria has several different activities leading up to the
Heart Walk, which draws about 100 participants every
year. For the first time, the hospital has partnered with
the Northeast Philadelphia YMCA to have children draw
pictures for the Heart Walk T-shirts. “We got some terrific
entries from the kids and will have a reception with them
and our physicians to reveal the winners,” Winn adds.
“We also are creating a healthy cookbook and will feature
heart healthy menus in the cafeteria.”
From community outreach projects like the Heart Walk,
to highly sophisticated surgical treatment, Aria Health’s
services cover the entire spectrum of the community’s
cardiac care needs.
“That’s a tremendous value proposition that an institution like
Aria can bring to patients,” Dr. Zama says. “Patients living in
our neighborhoods as well as countries around the world can
be confident that we can provide or coordinate every level of
cardiac care.”

Aria’s Medical team
Saved My Life.
“When I suffered a stroke a few years ago, I was taken to
the Emergency Department at Aria Health’s Frankford Campus
and the physicians and nurses there saved my life.
I’m very grateful for the care they provided, and the ongoing support
I have received since that time from my personal medical team
including my cardiologist, Dr. Jeffrey Kegel. They have taken
the time to get to know me by asking the right questions
and helping me keep my health on track.
I now go to Aria frequently for check-ups and outpatient
testing so I can do the things I love – like spending quality
time with my wife, son, and five grandchildren.

Thoracic Surgeon Richard Chang, MD, discusses an upcoming surgical case in the newly refurbished operating room that
features a fully integrated robotic system with video monitoring. Since the system is completely mounted on booms,
there is no need to wheel equipment in and out of the operating room.
Dr. Jeffrey Kegel provides a full range of general
and diagnostic cardiology services to patients at
Aria’s Health’s Frankford Campus. He and a team of
physicians, nurses, and other health professionals
provide preventive health services along with chronic

ria Health’s robotic-assisted and minimally
invasive surgery program has grown rapidly
since its launch in July 2010, and is now increasingly
recognized as a leader in the region, and among the
best programs in the nation.
“We get referrals routinely, not just from the Delaware
Valley, but from all over, specifically for this service,” says
Milton Coll, MD, Chief of the Division of Urology and Senior
Attending Surgeon at Aria. “It’s a huge benefit for our
patients to have this unparalleled facility right here in our
community.”
While the hospital has long been a leader in minimally
invasive surgery, Dr. Coll explains, robotic-assisted surgery
represents a leap forward over traditional laparoscopic
techniques. When surgeons use the robot, they can
remotely operate instruments with the same mobility and
flexibility as their hands, but with much greater precision.
“Robotic surgery done by masterful people is really
head and shoulders better than open surgery,” Dr. Coll
says. "At Aria, we are performing the most complex and
sophisticated surgery done anywhere.”
In the first year of the robotic-assisted surgery program,
Aria's surgeons performed 170 robotic surgeries. In the
second year, they completed just over 300. And in the
program’s third year, says Lillian Carson, Vice President of
Procedural Services, surgeons are on track to perform more
than 350 robotic-assisted procedures.

Aria’s surgeons agree that advanced laparoscopic and robotic
techniques represent the future of surgery, and offer a huge
advantage to patients by speeding up recovery time and
reducing pain, bleeding and scarring. “I’ve been incredibly
impressed with the capabilities,” says Jeffrey T. Brodsky, MD,
the Director of Surgical Oncology at Aria Health. “I think
robotic laparoscopic surgery is going to replace standard
laparoscopic surgery. With the robotic approach you have better
instrumentation, visualization and magnification. There’s just no
way you’re not going to do a better operation robotically.”
“The goal now across medicine and across specialties is to do as
much of your surgery as you can minimally invasively, and what
that translates to is doing things that are less disruptive to the
body,” says Gregory Bolton, Sr., MD, Chairman of the Department
of Gynecology and Women’s Health at Aria. “All of these things
lend themselves to an improvement with recovery, because
there’s less pain, less chance of infection and much less need for
blood transfusions because you’re bleeding less, so your overall
recovery time is vastly improved and much shorter.”

no incision performed on the neck,” he adds. “From a cosmetic
standpoint, this is a huge advantage.” Aria Health is a pioneer in
robotic-assisted thyroid surgery, he adds, with patients coming
from as far away as Barbados and Hawaii to be treated.

Aria Health’s surgeons are offering an ever-growing range of
procedures using this method. For example, thoracic surgeon
Richard Chang, MD, can perform the full range of procedures
needed to diagnose and treat lung cancer, as well as other types
of chest surgery. Lung cancer surgery used to require cutting the
sternum and spreading the ribs apart, resulting in a very long and
painful recovery. With robotic surgery, however, even the most
extensive lung cancers can be removed via a few tiny incisions,
Dr. Chang explains. “We don’t interrupt the stability of the chest
with the robotic approach as opposed to the standard approach,
where you actually disrupt the mechanics of the chest wall,” he
says. “The recovery is a lot shorter in terms of healing.”

Aria Health-Torresdale recently unveiled a refurbished
operating room that features a fully integrated robotic
system with video monitoring, completely mounted on
booms so there is no need to wheel equipment in and out of
the OR. “This allows the surgeons and staff to have the best
high definition visibility that they can possibly get,” Dr. Coll
explains. “It’s the absolute latest technology for that.”
Aria is the only hospital in the area with this type of system,
Dr. Coll added. “We now have the capability to conduct
live remote streaming of cases so if a surgeon wants to
teach at a conference remotely, the live imaging can be
streamed.” The technology can also be used to send a live
streaming video of the surgical procedure to the physician
who referred the patient for a procedure, he says, and for
teaching surgeons how to perform robotic surgeries.
“We can actually interact in real time while doing these very
complex procedures,” Dr. Coll explains. “It’s very exciting as a
teaching tool. It’s great because the work that’s being done
is well above that at a community hospital, or even at most
universities.”
Dr. Milton Coll
Advanced Laparoscopic
Surgery Now Available
at Frankford Campus
Says Carson: “It’s really important to us that we offer our
patients, or potential patients, in the community the most
advanced technology right here in our neighborhoods andin
our community. They don’t have to go downtown for this.
We actually have the most advanced models of equipment
and multiple specialties that are available in our area.”
For Aria Health’s patients, Carson adds, access to the
most sophisticated techniques and the most highly skilled
surgeons means they can not only receive the best available
treatment, they can also be confident that they will be able
to return to their normal lives as quickly as possible. ”When
our patients are facing potential surgery, they want it to be
the least disruptive to them so they can get back to their
daily life. As we stay at the leading edge of technology, we’ll
be able to offer that to them. I think that’s very important.”
Elizabeth Renza-Stingone, MD, FACS, and other
Aria surgeons now provide advanced laparoscopic
surgery procedures at Aria Health-Frankford.
Aria Health recently expanded leading-edge minimally
invasive surgery services to its Frankford Campus.
Patients living in the area now have access to several
advanced laparoscopic surgery procedures previously
only available at Aria’s Torresdale and Bucks County
Campuses.
“There are many benefits of minimally invasive surgeries:
faster recovery time, shorter hospital stays, less infection,
smaller scars, and less blood loss,” says minimally invasive
surgeon Dr. Elizabeth Renza-Stingone. “Those are all
reasons why we try to perform surgery in a minimally
invasive fashion, versus traditional open surgery.”
“A minimally invasive approach is definitely at this point
the forefront of surgery,” says Dr. Luca Giordano, Director
of Minimally Invasive Surgery at Aria.
Aria has upgraded all the laparoscopy operating rooms
and equipment at the Frankford Campus. “With advanced
laparoscopy you need some high-definition screens and
the equipment is a little bit different and more advanced,”
explains Alfred Bogucki, MD, Senior Attending Surgeon at
Aria Health and President of the Medical Staff.
“They’re geared up and ready to go with everything they
need in place,” says Mark LiBassi, MD, Chairman of Aria’s
Department of Surgery. “Aria takes pride in the continued
expansion of minimally invasive surgical services across
our health system.”

Aria Expands Primary Care
Physician Network
To schedule an appointment with one of Aria Health’s primary care physicians,
please refer to the map and directory or call 1-888-276-1770.
From Juniata to Newtown, Aria’s Primary Care
Physicians Provide Multigenerational Care
P
rimary care is the cornerstone of good health.
And despite a looming nationwide shortage of
primary care providers, Aria Health has been able to
significantly expand its network of primary care physicians
in recent years, serving communities as far south as
Juniata in Lower Northeast Philadelphia to as far north as
Newtown in Bucks County.
Aria Health Physician Services' expanding network of primary
care providers, including family practice and internal medicine
practitioners, give patients more options, increasing their
chances of finding a doctor who is right for them and their
family members.
"Finding a primary care physician, and building a good
relationship with him or her, is one of the most important
things you can do for your health," according to Abraham.
Check-ups and well visits aren’t just for kids, agrees Leonard
Malamud, DO, Director of Aria Health’s Division of Family
Practice. Adults need to stay on track with regular physical
exams, screening tests, and required immunizations, he adds.
“Keeping up with annual physicals and routine testing is really
important in order to maintain good health later in life.”
This is especially crucial if you have a chronic illness such
as diabetes, asthma, or chronic obstructive pulmonary
disease (COPD). By working closely with your doctor, you
can keep your symptoms under control, and avoid serious
complications. “If you are being followed by your primary
care physician and staying healthy, you can avoid that whole
domino effect,” Abraham says.

Aria Health’s
“Pink Glove” Dance Team
Marks breast cancer Awareness
month with creativity and flair
I
n October, Aria Health’s employees and team members
recognized Breast Cancer Awareness Month by pulling on
pink gloves and showing off their dance moves.
About 40 employees of the hospital, some of whom are breast
cancer survivors, made a dance video and entered it in the second
annual national Pink Glove Dance video competition held by
Medline Industries, Inc. They’re competing with organizations
across the United States and Canada to win thousands of dollars
for the charity of their choice. For Aria, that charity is the American
Cancer Society, and now that the voting recently closed, Aria is
awaiting the announcement of the winner in November.
Aria's Pink Glove dancers take a break from their performance on the helipad at Aria Health-Torresdale. This team of Aria
employees practiced and performed a choreographed dance to raise awareness for breast cancer and for the chance to donate
$10,000 to the breast cancer research organization of their choice.
“I had seen the video on YouTube,” says Dominic Webster,
the Director of Pharmacy at Aria and one of four men who
participated in Aria’s Pink Glove Dance. “When I saw we were
doing it here, I was very excited to be a part of the team.” This
summer, Webster said, his mother was diagnosed with breast
cancer, and his sister is a 26-year breast cancer survivor. Another
reason why Webster joined up: he wanted to support his friend
Rubeo. “I went a little crazy,” he adds. “I wore a pink mohawk.”
“It was a lot of fun,” says Michelle Rubeo, who is the Environmental
Services Manager at Aria’s Torresdale Campus and a breast cancer
survivor. “Everyone was all dressed up in their pink beads and their
pink shirts and pink scarves,” describes Rubeo. “I had my pink wig
and pink sunglasses.” Rubeo was diagnosed with breast cancer in
2008, and remains in treatment.
The Aria dancers rehearsed their routine twice, and then
performed in three separate areas of the hospital, including the
helicopter pad. “We dance to ‘You Won’t Dance Alone,’” says
Debbie Sinclair, Director of Radiation Oncology at Aria Health
and a Pink Glove Dance participant. “We thought that was very
appropriate.”
Medline, a medical supply company, produced the first Pink
Glove Dance video three years ago to help raise breast cancer
awareness. Over 200 employees of Providence St. Vincent
Medical Center in Portland, Oregon, teamed up to dance to Jay
Sean’s “Down” in the original video, which now has more than 13
million hits on YouTube.
The following year Medline produced a sequel featuring more
than 4,000 healthcare workers and breast cancer survivors from
across the country. And in 2011, the company launched an online
nationwide competition featuring 139 entries from organizations
throughout the US and Canada.

Michelle Rubeo, Environmental Services Manager, Aria HealthTorresdale (left) and Dominic Webster, Administrative Director
of Pharmacy Services at Aria Health, pose for a photo following
a Pink Glove Dance performance on September 15.
“The reason we’re doing this is that we want to let our cancer
patients know that we support them, we admire them, that
we’re there for them,” says Rosemarie Rahill, Aria’s Women’s
Health Coordinator. “We know that sometimes when patients are
undergoing treatment they feel very much alone,” says Rahill.
“We’re aware that they’re going through this pain. Our display
of support through participation in the Pink Glove Dance project
is one way to let them know that they are not in the fight alone
and Aria is there to support them.”
During her battle with the disease, Rubeo said, Aria Health has
been extremely supportive. “They go above and beyond here. I
would say Aria is a big part of what has kept me going for the
four years I’ve been sick.”
Public judging of the Pink Glove Dance videos began October
12 and a winner will be announced in November. First prize is
$10,000, second is $5,000, and third is $2,500. Winners donate
the prize money to the breast cancer charity of their choice.

Aria Launches Life-Saving
Comprehensive Lung
Cancer Screening Program
/ Lung screening /
A
major research study has demonstrated that
screening smokers for lung cancer can sharply
reduce their risk of death from the disease, and Aria Health
is among the first hospitals to offer this low-dose CT
scanning to its patients.
“A review of health behaviors in our patient population
consistently reveals a high rate of smoking, which directly
correlates to a very high incidence of lung cancer,” says Allen
E. Lord Terzian, MD, Director of the Division of Hematology
and Medical Oncology, and Medical Director of Aria's Cancer
Center. “The most cancer deaths that we see, by far, are from
lung cancer.”
Because lung cancer typically does not cause symptoms until
the disease is advanced, 90 percent of people diagnosed with
lung cancer will die from it, Dr. Terzian added. But now, there’s
a way to screen at-risk individuals for lung cancer, catch it early,
and treat it—when the disease is far more curable.
The screening test involves minimal radiation exposure and
provides a detailed view of the lungs and chest. “By performing
low-dose CT scans you can find very small nodules,” explains
radiation oncologist Eric Gressen, MD. “If these nodules are
identified when just becoming cancerous, there are ways of
treating them that are fairly effective.”
The test, which Aria began offering this summer, is part of a
comprehensive program that includes smoking cessation and
minimally invasive methods for detecting, staging, and treating
cancer. Before the introduction of these methods, surgeons
would need to cut open a patient’s chest to treat—and in some
cases even diagnose—lung cancer. But with modern treatments
like endobronchial ultrasound, a thoracic surgeon passes a
long thin tube carrying a camera and an ultrasound device
into the patient’s windpipe while the patient is anesthetized.
The tube can also be used to biopsy lymph nodes. Aria offers
another test, navigation bronchscopy, that allows the surgeon
to examine even smaller lesions located more peripherally in
the lung.
The comprehensive lung cancer screening team at Aria (from left to right): Eli Dweck, MD, Chairman, Department of Radiology;
Allen E. Lord Terzian, MD, Director, Division of Hematology and Medical Oncology, Medical Director, Aria Health Cancer Center;
Eric L. Gressen, MD, Radiation Oncology; Gary A. Aaronson, DO, FCCP, Director, Division of Pulmonary Medicine; Richard S. Chang,
MD, Thoracic Surgery; Steven M. Geller, DO, Pulmonary Medicine; Barbara M. Leighton, MD, Pulmonary Medicine; Frederick G. Dold,
MD, Medical Oncology; Jacqueline B. Sutter, DO, Pulmonology; Sean B. Reiter, MD, Radiology
26
fall 2012
And if testing does determine that a patient has cancer, Aria
offers leading-edge treatment including minimally invasive
robotic-assisted surgery. This is an extremely precise technique
that involves performing the operation via a few small incisions
in the chest. Patients lose much less blood, experience less
pain, and recover more quickly than they would after traditional
lung surgery, which requires large incisions into the chest wall.
“We have a complete comprehensive spectrum of minimally
invasive, early detection, and treatment methods for lung
cancer,” says thoracic surgeon Richard Chang, MD, a leading
expert in using these methods. “Our expectation is to reduce
lung cancer mortality at Aria Health through our advanced
methods and programs.”
The screening is currently recommended for patients who have
smoked at least one pack of cigarettes a day for at least 30
years and are between 55 and 74 years old. Patients can speak
to their primary care doctor about getting the test, which takes
about 10 minutes.
The results of the screening test are sent to a patient’s primary
care doctor, who lets the patient know if he or she needs to
see a lung specialist. For patients who do not need additional
diagnosis or treatment, Aria’s team will recommend yearly
screenings, or, in some cases, screening every six months.
Patients who are current smokers will also be enrolled in
a smoking cessation program. “We have to make smoking
cessation counseling a priority, because that’s really what’s
causing the majority of these tumors,” says Gary Aaronson,
DO, FCCP, Director of the Division of Pulmonary Medicine at
Aria. Helping smokers kick the habit, he adds, is by far the most
important thing that physicians can do for their patients. “We
can have a bigger impact doing this than just about anything.”

Introducing...
Sleep Diagnostic Centers
Offer Latest Care and Comfort
If You’re Having Restless Nights, You’re Not Alone
T
he Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)
estimates that up to 70 million US adults have sleep
or wakefulness disorders. And the consequences go far
beyond daytime grogginess. Evidence is mounting that lack of
sleep can lead to mental and physical health problems, from
depression to heart disease to obesity.
Luckily, most sleep problems are treatable. But they must be
diagnosed first, and that’s where Aria Health’s Sleep Diagnostic
Centers can help. If your doctor suspects that you have a sleep
disorder, he or she may order a sleep study. Basically, this means
you spend a night in a sleep lab where your body functions and
movements are monitored.
While this may sound like an uncomfortable proposition, Aria’s
clinical staff do their best to make the experience as easy as
possible. “Our staff is very sensitive to these patients and are
very good at explaining what’s going to happen during the night
to put them at ease,” says Carolyn McCain, Manager of Sleep
Diagnostics/EEG at Aria Health.
Both Aria’s four-bed free-standing Sleep Center at The
Professional Court located at Bustleton Avenue and Verree Road
in Northeast Philadelphia, and its two-bed Sleep Center at Aria
Health’s Bucks County Campus in Langhorne, Bucks County, are
fully accredited by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine
(AASM). The Centers’ nine technicians and six physicians are all
certified in sleep medicine or related specialties.
Here’s how a sleep study works: before the patient goes to
sleep, monitoring devices are attached to his or her body to
track brain waves, oxygen saturation, heart rate, movement and
other vital signs. During the night, technicians watch the patient
from an observation area. If a person repeatedly gasps for
breath during the night, he or she is likely to have sleep apnea;
constant leg motion signals restless leg syndrome.
“Patients come to us to identify what their particular sleep problem
is, and to determine if they need to be referred to a medical
specialist for further evaluation and treatment,” McCain says.
For example, someone with obstructive sleep apnea might be
referred to an ear, nose and throat specialist, while, if doctors
believe a patient’s sleep difficulties are related to depression, he
or she may be referred to a psychologist.
Aria’s sleep specialists also provide sleep testing during the day
for patients who work at night. “We see a lot of sleep disorders
in people who do shift work,” McCain says. “We accommodate
their schedule.”
Kevin Collins, Lead Sleep
Technician at Aria's Sleep
Center at The Professional
Court, applies monitoring
devices designed to track
his patient's brain waves,
oxygen saturation, heart
rate, movement and other
vital signs while they sleep.
Sleep technicians like Collins monitor
patients to identify their particular
problem and determine if they need to
be referred to a medical specialist for
further evaluation and treatment.
For patients who may need extra attention, McCain adds, Aria
provides one-on-one care. “It’s a hospital-based sleep program,
which means you are going to receive an advanced level of care,”
says Marc Schlessinger, Administrative Director of Cardiorespiratory
and Rehabilitation Services at Aria. “As a result, we have the
ability to offer a full range of services to the patient who may need
treatment for conditions beyond sleep disorders.”

F
or the 33rd year in a row, runners and walkers showed
their support for Aria Health at the hospital’s annual
Wellness Run, held September 9, 2012. There wasn’t a
rain cloud in sight on race day, to the delight of the adults and
children that once again enjoyed this longstanding Aria tradition.
The event, which features a 5K Run, 5K Walk and ½ Mile Children’s
Run, was once again held outside the Flyers Skate Zone located at
Comly and Decatur Roads in Northeast Philadelphia.
The race was initially launched as a fundraiser to help provide
patients with transportation to and from their cancer treatment
at Aria Health’s Cancer Center. Now, explains Chris Winchester,
Manager of Preventive Health and Wellness at Aria Health, the
race raises funds to help patients pay for ancillary wellness
services that are not covered by their health insurance.
This year’s event winners did not disappoint, with the top male
finisher, Adam Hyman, crossing the finish line with a time of 19
minutes 55 seconds, while Kathy Levitt—who manages Aria’s
Nutrition Center—was the top female finisher, with a time of
22:21. Jake King was first among the 11- to 13-year-old boys
in the children’s half-mile run, with a time of 3:43. Other top
finishers included Giovanni Moretti (boys age 7 and under, 4:13);
Nicolette Schikel (girls age 7 and under, 4:31); Rocky Moretti
(boys age 8-10, 3:22); and Keri Gontz (girls age 8-10, 3:43).

Construction roundup
Emergency Department Projects at

Lori’s Gifts Comes to Torresdale
State Senators Robert Tomlinson (second from left) and
Mike Stack (second from right) present a $3 million RACP
check to Robert Truitt (left), Chairman of Aria Health’s
Board of Directors, and Kathleen Kinslow, Aria Health’s
President and CEO.
Following significant renovations, the gift shop at Aria
Health-Torresdale re-opened in July 2012. Operated
by Lori's Gifts, which manages gift shops at more than
250 hospitals throughout the country, the gift shop
now offers a wider selection of merchandise, flowers,
balloons, greeting cards, and personal care products.
Aria Health-Torresdale construction updates
Aria Health was recently granted $3 million in
Redevelopment Assistance Capital Program (RACP) funds to
help construct a new emergency department and to expand
the parking garage at the Torresdale Campus.
The recently opened entrance at Aria Health-Frankford's new Emergency Department.
Aria Health-Frankford Emergency Department Renovation
At Aria’s Frankford Campus, construction of the new Emergency Department is now in its second phase with completion
set for spring 2013. The project will have four phases in all.
Since June, patients have been able to use the new entrance, waiting, and treatment areas. The $12.1 million project
will double capacity in Lower Northeast Philadelphia's only Emergency Department, from 17 to 34 beds,
while adding 8,000 square feet of space.
When complete, the new Emergency Department will be able to serve 60,000 patients annually.
Pennsylvania State Senators Mike Stack and Robert Tomlinson
presented the funds to Aria Health in July. “We are proud
to serve our neighbors in Northeast Philadelphia and Bucks
County,” said Kathleen Kinslow, CRNA, EdD, MBA, Aria’s
President and Chief Executive Officer (CEO). “And thanks to
Senators Stack and Tomlinson, who are true advocates for our
neighborhoods and for Aria Health, we can better meet the
needs of our patients for many years to come.”
The $37 million project is expected to be complete by
March 2014. It will expand capacity from 30 to 42 beds,
while streamlining patient evaluation and treatment to
meet both minor and major emergency care needs
effectively and efficiently.
The $9 million parking garage expansion project, completed
in July 2011, increased parking capacity at Aria-Torresdale 25
percent by adding nearly 400 spaces.
In addition, the Torresdale Campus also welcomes a new
gift shop run by Lori’s Gifts, which is exclusively devoted to
providing world class hospital gift shops that make patients,
guests, employees and volunteers feel welcome.
“Everyone is gearing up to see what they have for the holidays,”
says Christine Winn, Executive Director of Aria HealthTorresdale. “Lori’s Gifts was a great opportunity for us because
they offer such a nice array of items, not just for our patients
and visitors, but also for our employees,” she adds.
Lori’s Gifts also plans to open a gift shop kiosk at Aria’s
Bucks County Campus in the near future.
