News From The QRC Grounds Committee
Some of our members have asked, what is going on
along Route 72?
The big pipes and the construction thats going
on along Route 72 is part of the project to widen the
intersection, it is designed to help with the water
run from heavy rains because QRC property is the
lowest point of the four corners of the Route 72 and
Route 419 intersection.
The grounds crew have worked hard this year at
making more improvement on the property. Some
of the work that was done through out the year was:
that they fixed a number of major water leaks on the
property which resulted in very high water bills.
Other improvements were, a speaker was installed
in the indoor arena (Barn 5) for the Winter Shows,
corrected electric problem outside, Trimmed trees
and removed ugly bushes in the employees parking
area. They also replaced gutters and down spouts
on club house and 2 barns. 11 broken barn windows
and window frames were completely redone and
ready to be replaced and a big expense was the lease
on our sound system, we now own it!

New Year's Snack Recipe
Crab & cream cheese snacks
Tasty appetizer to treat your friends!
1-8 oz. tube crescent roll dough
3 oz. cream cheese, softened
1/4 cup mayonnaise
3/4 cup cooked crabmeat, chopped
2 green onions, chopped
1/8- 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper
salt and pepper, to taste
Heat oven to 375°F. Spray cookie sheet with cooking spray. Unroll dough
on work surface. Pinch seams to seal and roll with a rolling pin to create
an even rectangle. Cut into 6 rows by 4 rows to make 24 squares.
In small bowl, mix cream cheese, mayo, crabmeat, onion, and red
pepper. Salt and pepper to taste. Divide crab mixture evenly among the
squares, dropping it by spoonfulls that are 1/2 inch from 1 corner of each
square. Starting with same corner, fold dough over filling, and tuck end
tightly underneath filling; continue rolling to within 1/2 inch of opposite
corner. Roll opposite corner of dough over roll; press to seal. Place on
cookie sheet. Brush with egg white, if desired.
Bake 10 to 15 minutes or until golden brown. Remove from cookie sheet.
Serve warm.

Here is a picture of Quentin Riding Club 's Clubhouse and Bit-N-Spur
back in 1962. This picture was before the bathrooms
were on the south side of the clubhouse, it had a big beautiful pouch.
Also the Bit-N-Spur Pub was not attached to the clubhouse it
was a separate building. Dennis, our Office Manager, found this picture
in the office and thought the members would enjoy it..Thank You
Dennis!

Sorry! it looks like I forgot to put the history in December's Newsletter
So this is continued from November's Newsletter- Monthly Piece of QRC History
Each month there is a small piece of Quentin Riding Club's History in that month's newsletter. Hopefully everyone enjoys reading
about how the Quentin Riding Club began. For anyone who missed any of the history, go on our website
www.quentinridingclub.com, click on newsletter link, go to the past newsletters at the bottom of the page. We started our monthly
history in the August newsletter just page through to you find it . It was titled Maplewood & Quentin Riding Club a monthly piece of
QRC History.....
The Orginal Maplewood purchase was about 150 ares in three tracts. About 10 acres were south of US 322, 30-40
acres lay east of Maple Lane and is now residential and the balance was in one tract which ran from Quentin to Maple
Lane. The northern boundary was the end of Fairview's driving range. It was fine, profitable land which was
sharecropped to provide orn and hay for our own use.
Until 1941 Pa. 72 snaked its way from Lebanon to Quentin via part of Zinn's Mill Rd. but 72 was then relocated to
its present configuration. Elevations were altered and the continuity of land was shedded to the point where no farmer
wanted to work the land. The church bought a corner for a pittance, a motel developer got another useless corner and to
enourage xtension of Quentin's water lines, the fourth corner was sold to a gas station company at which point proeeds
were applied to a new, second-source water supply and a fire hydrant.
What remains is roughly half the orginal acquisition.

With colder, winter weather on its way, a few changes in horse care may be necessary depending on
how much work you and your horse do in the winter.
Clipping: During cold weather, horses/ponies grow a heavy winter coat with extra scurf and grease to
protect them against cold and wet. When a long-haired horse/pony works hard, his coat becomes wet
with sweat. This heavy coat makes it hard for him to cool down ant takes a long time to dry. It is
uncomfortable, and he can get chilled if he stands around in a wet coat in cold weather. Body clipping
may help him. Body clipping may help as it shortens the coat to a length a little shorter than a summer
coat, making the horse/pony easier to groom and cool out and more comfortable during hard work.
However, he must wear a blanket to make up for the loss of his winter coat.
Body clipping is often necessary when a horse’s coat is too long and thick.

A thick coat takes a long time to dry and prevents a horse from cooling down.
A heavy, wet coat can chill a horse.
A body clipped horse requires blankets to help keep him warm, even when simply
standing in cross ties.

Strip Clip – Minimum clip – like unzipping your jacket. A strip is clipped along the underside of
the neck and the front of the chest, and underneath the belly.
Trace Clip – A partial clip. The sides of the neck, shoulders, and belly are clipped about halfway
up. This clips the parts that sweat the most, leaving long hair on the legs and body. A traceclipped horse may or may not need a blanket, depending on how much hair has been clipped
and how cold the weather is.
Hunter Clip – Often used on field hunters, includes the body, neck, and head. Long hair is left to
protect the legs (called stockings) and in a “saddle patch” (shaped like a saddle). Blanketing is
necessary.
Full Clip – Used on show horses, includes the body, head, and legs. Warm blankets and
sometimes a hood are necessary,
