10 Baby Boomer
trends
& how
to profit
from
them
Contrary to popular belief, there are a great
many baby boomers that are not retired. Even
better, many baby boomers are at the peak of
their earning years and have comparatively
large discretionary incomes to spend.
Read on to learn about trends in baby boomer
behavior, and, more importantly, how you can
profit from them with these small business ideas
for products and/or services that appeal to the
baby boomer market.
I have to see it or do it before it's gone. One of the big
baby boomer trends is the compulsion to see it/do it before it
can't be seen or done anymore. The Great Wall, the Great Barrier Reef, Venice - boomers feel a need to visit places, species and
lifestyles that are vanishing and experience them for themselves.
Environmental concerns, such as global warming, seem to have
exacerbated these feelings. Seeing polar or spirit bears in their
natural environment or visiting Antarctica, for example, are high
on the “must-see” list.
Our kids are smaller and furrier than they used to be. I
think you have to have been living abroad to have missed this
baby boomer trend. Dogs and cats aren't just pets any more;
they're treasured members of the family. Remember the old days
when dogs slept in dog houses? Not in boomer households.
Baby boomer pets eat, sleep and do things with their people.
They watch TV, they get dressed up, they have their own friends
and their own doctors. They are a multi-million dollar industry!
Small Business
Canada
The baby boomer market is an extremely
desirable market because of its sheer size. While
niche marketing is almost a rule for small business
success, it makes sense, too, to try and target a
niche as large and moneyed as possible - and
the huge baby boomer market is full of niche
opportunities that can be extremely profitable.
6
We need help with our aged parents. Remember that the
baby boomer generation is so large that it encompasses a whole
range of life events. One of the larger subsets of the boomer demographic is those who are currently dealing with aged parents
or soon to be about to. Many baby boomers feel incapable of
dealing with their parents' problems themselves. They want to
know what the options are or are looking to hire people to help
with specific problems such as home care or moving an elderly
parent from his or her home to new quarters.
Look how fit I am! Boomers care about their health, probably
because they see health and fitness as a way of staving off age.
Boomers are age-obsessed. We all are now but almost none of us
will admit to being middle-aged or, God forbid, seniors! Those
are titles for old people and we're not. One of the ways we let
the population at large know that is by dressing in fitness gear as
much as possible. The man stepping off the elevator in his spandex bike gear? A baby boomer. The woman on the street wearing
the yoga outfit? Another one.
2015 Calgary Senior • Products & Services
I've got that loving feeling... For the world. For whales. For
victims of the latest hurricane. Baby boomers love to feel good
and contributing to a cause is one quick way to do that. Especially if it's a popular cause. In some circles, there almost seems
to be a cause-upmanship operating; the more causes one visibly
supports, the better. The best thing to do, though, is to espouse
your own cause and host/sponsor your own events.
I'm a strange animal, just like you are. A lot of baby boomers spend a lot of time expressing Greta Garbo-like sentiments.
They need space, they have to be alone, they need to find themselves etc. etc. However, curiously, boomers will flock to a lot of
the same places and do a lot of the same things together to do
that. It's no coincidence that all-inclusive resorts and trips have
become so popular.
Wait! I haven't told you about or shown you... Boomers
don't just do things; they have experiences. And for better or
worse, they want to share those experiences with everyone else.
Baby boomers are certain that their personal stories are worth
telling - and videoing, and taping, and blogging about, and even
hiring other people to write about. Baby boomers were the original audience and content of talk shows and now the 'Net has
given them even more scope for their "get it all out there and
share it with the world" tendencies.
Let the professional do it; he knows best. Previous generations put a much higher premium on self-reliance than boomers
do. Baby boomers have a strong tendency to let experts take care
of them, whether it's a personal trainer or a broker. If you're a
baby boomer yourself, try to imagine your Dad consulting a financial planner or hiring a decorator. You'll get the picture.
Inconspicuous consumption. The container of Haagen
Dazs ice cream in the freezer with the spoon stuck in it is perhaps the perfect baby boomer symbol. Of course it's expensive.
Of course it's superior. Of course I have to have it! Baby boomers
want the best and the best of the best is even better. To indulge
in luxuries conspicuously, however, is frowned upon. Perhaps in
self-defense, boomers have turned cocooning into an art form.
Behind the door are a whole lot of high-end fabrics, furnishings
and products.

Of course I'm not too old for that! This is another baby
boomer trend that you have to have been living abroad for the
last decade to have missed. No matter how grueling an experience may be, to even suggest that someone of a certain age may
be too old to participate is to risk having your head verbally
snapped off. Where I live, 80 year-olds drag themselves onto the
tennis courts and 60-somethings enthusiastically kayak and hike
mountainsides. Baby boomers refuse to be or act old until it's
absolutely unavoidable.

1. Place the steamer basket in a large saucepan and add water to about 1 inch below the bottom of the basket. Place the
pumpkin halves in the basket, cover the pan and turn heat to
medium-high. When the water boils, reduce heat to medium
and cook until the pumpkins are tender, 10 to 15 minutes,
adding hot water if necessary. Let cool. When cool enough
to handle, scoop pulp from skins. Transfer to a food processor, add salt and pepper and puree until almost smooth. Set
aside.

Natural health
trends for 2015
(NC) A new year brings new beginnings, a
time when many of us make resolutions to be
healthier. To help you get there, the Canadian
Health Food Association (CHFA) surveyed
industry experts to identify the top five natural
health trends for this year:
www.newscanada.com
1. Pumpkin: Primed to be the kale of 2015, we are going to
see an increase in the use of pumpkin across the country. From
oils to seeds, this unique squash has many health benefits and
has been linked to heightened prostate and urinary tract health.
Pumpkin seeds are also rich in B vitamins, vitamin E, zinc and
essential fatty acids.
2. The Gut: Digestive health is poised to reign supreme
amongst natural health trends in 2015. Increasingly, natural
health products that support digestion, including a diversifying
probiotic category, are being linked to benefits beyond digestive
health, such as mental health, skin health, and weight maintenance, among others.
3. Fermentation: The trend of supporting digestion also extends to fermented foods, which are no longer limited to kimchi, tempeh and sauerkraut. Fermentation can liberate nutrients
in foods which helps our body better absorb them. For 2015,
natural health lovers are taking fermentation outside of the mason jar. Canadians will see a plethora of new fermented foods in
different forms including bars and powders popping up in stores
across the country.
14
4. GMO labeling: In more than 60 countries around the world,
including Australia, Japan, and all of the countries in the European Union, there are significant restrictions or outright bans
on the production and sale of GMOs. Food labeling activism is
on the rise in Canada. We are seeing an increase in consumers
demanding to know where their food comes from and whether
it has been genetically2015
modified.

age, can be an opportunity for travel,
recreation and further education, and
even a new career. Plan for the next stage

housing, computers and more.
5. Fancy Fats: In 2014 coconut oil was all the rage, and while
it has many health benefits, we are seeing more and more people
using new oils, each offering their own unique health advantages. Some of those that will be trending this year include:•
Avocado Oil - Rich in monounsaturated fats and vitamin E and
with a high smoke point which makes it better for use in cooking
than olive oil. • Camelina Oil - Rich in mono- and poly-unsaturated fats with a high proportion of omega-3s for cardiovascular
health.• Flax Seed Oil - Rich in alpha-linolenic omega-3 fats.

Hearing loss questions answered by Calgary’s leading specialist in Audiology and Hearing Aids
Dr. Carrie Scarff is a hearing loss specialist, lecturer and has been
involved in the hearing loss research industry over the past 20 years
across Canada. She is a board member with the non-profit agency
Deaf and Hear Alberta.
We asked her to answer some of the most frequently asked questions
about hearing loss and here are her answers:
I am 65 years old. Should I have my hearing tested? Seniors should
Where should I go to get hearing aids if I need them? Proper Audiology
training and care is required to provide accurate and useful hearing aids. Although hearing aids are available at big box type stores,
there is a significantly lower rate of people who wear their hearing
aids that were provided from these locations. We often see patients
who have purchased hearing aids at these types of locations and
have never used them. This can be due to the less experienced staff,
lack of instruction provided, and minimal follow up care given. Make
sure you get the best care you can by choosing an Audiology clinic
with experienced and caring clinicians where their only focus is on
helping you with improving your hearing; not stocking tires and
food products.
Why am I still having some difficulty hearing now that I have hearing
aids? It is important to understand that it can take up to 18 months
to fully adapt to new hearing aids. The brain is powerful but it does
take time to effectively listen through hearing aids, especially in
challenging environments such as at a noisy gathering or in a group.
Keep wearing your hearing aids all the time in order to give the brain
as much practice at listening as possible. Some good ways to practice your listening skills are to listen to music, watch TV or movies
with closed captioning to use your eyes to help your ears relearn
sounds and listening to books on cd or on your iPod.
have a hearing exam every two years. Approximately 25% of Canadian adults over 65 years suffer significant hearing loss. It’s best to
find out sooner rather than later so that proper care and management can be taken to help.
My hearing test results show that I have hearing loss. What should I do
now? Research shows that treating a hearing loss early is critical. An
untreated hearing loss has a number of negative effects on our brain
(John Hopkins Medical Centre, 2014 research), reducing how well
we understand what we hear, our memory and our other cognitive
skills. It is important to get proper treatment of your hearing loss as
soon as possible to reduce these negative effects on the brain. However, don’t forget about how important communication with your
family and friends is as well. Keeping your hearing working properly
helps enable you to enjoy conversations, music and taking part in
your favourite activities.

6 Ideas for
Elder-Friendly
Design
Easy on the Hands. You probably don’t think much about
turning a doorknob, but it can actually be quite a chore, even
painful, for someone with arthritis or other conditions. Simply
replacing doorknobs with lever-style hardware can make
life easier for residents. Levers are also best on faucets, and
illuminated rocker switches are better than the standard toggle
light switches.
Friendly Floors. Slippery surfaces are not the only danger

underfoot, although they’re the most obvious. All floors should
be made slip-resistant, such as by adding nonskid mats under
area rugs (or getting rid of the area rugs completely). Trips are
as dangerous as slips, so eliminate trip points like thresholds
wherever possible, or reduce their height. For those who use
walkers, adds Cratsley, low-pile carpeting is safest so the walker
doesn’t catch on deep pile and cause a fall.
Safe Stairs. For older people living on more than one level,
stairs can be especially dangerous. Handrails are a must, on both
sides of the staircase if possible. Lighting is also critical, says
Cratsley, so make sure the entire stairway is well lit from top to
bottom. Clearly defined steps that show where the edge of the
tread is can help prevent falls.
A Well-Lighted Place. The staircase isn’t the only part of a
home that needs good lighting. A dark room is an invitation to
a bump or a fall, so make sure there’s adequate lighting in every
room, hallway, and doorway. Entryways are especially dangerous
if not well lit.

Universal design is not, as some would think, strictly for the elderly or disabled.
The concept of universal design is to make living and work spaces equally
comfortable, safe, and accessible for all, regardless of height or physical
ability. These ideas might help make a home safer for an older resident, but
they’re pretty smart for homeowners of all ages.
Landing Places. Fumbling with keys, packages, the mail
— all can distract and unbalance someone entering or exiting
a home. In addition to providing lighting at entryways be sure
to have a table, bench, or other surface nearby for putting things
down.
Better Baths. Most people think of shower grab bars as the
way to make bathing safer. There are other ways to help ensure
safety in the bath, says Cratsley. Think about adding grab bars
by the toilet, too, or other places in the room where someone
may need a helping hand. A step-in shower is safer than a tub,
but if that’s not possible add grab bars that help someone getting
in and out. A single-handled faucet control reduces the chances
of scalding at the sink, and a pressure-balanced control does the
same in the shower. A hand-held showerhead is often easier to
use for someone with limited mobility than a fixed showerhead.

You can find our more about the principles of universal design from the Center for Universal Design.

Travel Tips For the Over 50 Jet Set
Metro Creative
For many people, the allure of travel never wears off. Be it a young person’s first trip to a foreign land or an older couple’s return to the place they spent their honeymoon, recreational travel remains a favorite hobby of people of all ages.
Though travel appeals to people of all ages, it differs for people of all ages as well. The carefree “pack a bag and
go” attitude shared by many a young traveler is not prudent for older travelers, who must take several safety precautions when traveling to ensure the trip will be safe as well as enjoyable. The American Geriatric Society’s Foundation for
Health in Aging offers the following travel tips to older adults who still love the adventure of travel.
Talk to your doctor in advance. If you have already made
travel plans, consult your physician, who may suggest a full
checkup, before your trip begins. Explain any travel plans, particularly which cities or countries you plan to visit and what your
travel itinerary is. Different locales call for different precautionary measures, and your doctor can discuss with you specific measures to take depending on where you will be going. The Centers
for Disease Control and Prevention lists various required and
recommended vaccines based on certain travel destinations. For
more information, visit www.cdc.gov/travel.
When speaking with your doctor, it’s also best to ask when
to take medications. While this is less of a concern for travelers
who are staying within their own time zones, it’s important for
travelers changing time zones to learn if they should stick to their
home-time-zone schedule or adapt it to the time zone they’ll be
visiting. Even travelers who are staying within their time zone
should ask their physician if it’s best to take certain medications
before or after a flight.
Pack all necessary medications in your carry-on bag. Most
travelers have their own horror stories about losing checked baggage. For older men and women on medication, this can be especially troubling if their medications are packed in bags that were
checked. When traveling, make sure all medications are in your
carry-on bag to avoid losing medication while away from home.
Make a list. Before leaving home, make a list with your phy26
sician’s help and carry it with you at all times. This list should
include:
• any existing medical conditions
• current treatment for those medical conditions, including the
names of any medications you are on, the doses and how these
medications are administered
• the amount of the drug you need to take on the trip (this will
be important should any medications be lost or damaged while
traveling)
Take steps to avoid deep-vein thrombosis. Deep-vein
thrombosis, or DVT, occurs when blood clots form in the veins.
This typically takes place in the legs because of a lack of blood
flow. Older adults are at risk of DVT when traveling because
traveling often requires sitting in one place, such as on an airplane or train, for long periods of time. Research has indicated
that compression stockings are effective at preventing DVT, and
older travelers might want to consider such stockings, particularly if their travels require a long flight, drive or train ride.
Don’t transfer pills to new containers. Veteran travelers know getting through Customs is no joy ride. It’s even less
enjoyable for men and women who must take prescription
medications with them. To make your trip through Customs as
stress-free as possible, keep all medications in their original containers.

Things to consider
before buying
a recreational
vehicle
Metro Creative
Opportunity for adventure abounds
for recreational vehicle owners. With a
motor home parked in the driveway, a
road trip or instant family getaway is
only a few steps away.
While RVs can be rented, serious road-trippers often prefer
purchasing one so that it can be customized with the features
desired and always be at the ready. RVs vary in price depending
on the vehicle, and there are a few thing prospective RV owners
should know before they begin shopping.
First and foremost, drivers who have not previous owned an
RV or even stepped inside of one you may have an inaccurate perception of these vehicles. Today’s recreational vehicles are much
more than meets the eye, and it pays to attend an RV show to
become acquainted with the various types of motor homes. This
way you will be familiar with the jargon and have a reasonable
idea of what you want before going to a dealership.
There are various classes of RVs, but the largest ones tend to
be the most expensive. Some RVs have an engine and are driven
like a bus, while other models hitch to the back of a truck or van.
If you will be towing an RV, you must be certain the car or truck
doing the towing is equipped to tow a vehicle the weight and size
of your particular RV.
How you plan to use the RV should also be considered prior
28
to purchasing one. Will you be spending time cooking meals and
sleeping inside, or will it mainly be used as a storage unit for your
camping gear? Do you plan on taking extended vacations and
desire all the comforts of home? Defining these goals will help
you find the right RV for you.
Another thing to consider is renting an RV for a day or two to
get a feel for driving it and what it is like to spend a night inside.
You may be able to determine if you need more or less of a mobile
home when you ultimately decide to purchase.
Make sure everything works before you drive the RV off of
the lot. Repairs can be expensive, and you do not want to be
stuck with a lemon when you’re on the road. Find out if there
are any roadside assistance packages that can be negotiated to
offer you peace of mind with your first RV.
The decision of whether or not to purchase an RV requires
ample forethought. Comparing a number of different models
and designs and weighing personal needs can give buyers a good
idea of which RV is right for them.

Kalispell Regional Healthcare makes a difference for Canadians
Judy Hiebert was on a Christmas cruise in the Caribbean
with her family when she first started experiencing the
tiredness, numbness, and tingling in her arm. Soon after, it
was followed by slurred speech and blurry vision. She could
tell something wasn’t right, but she assumed it was just a
side effect of her migraine, or the heat and humidity. As the
weeks passed following her return home to Creston, British
Columbia, the symptoms increased in frequency and duration.
sure she worked directly for the neurologist’s office,” says Judy.
“We later discovered that she is in charge of all of the international medical services. She just makes you feel so cared for.”
During her time at KRH, Judy was diagnosed with relapsing
remitting multiple sclerosis. It was a scary diagnosis for both
Judy and her family. However, with medication and a careful
She saw her local doctor in late December, and got a referral for
a neurologist. The initial appointment, however, wasn’t until
April. With an additional appointment for an MRI needed
after that, Judy and her husband, Jacob, both felt that it could
be as long as a year or later before a diagnosis could be made.
The timeframe for scheduling treatment was an even bigger
unknown. In the meantime, the symptoms were getting worse,
with Judy frequently losing feeling in one or both of her arms.
Jacob and Judy decided that if she waited until April to be diagnosed, she might not be able to walk without the use of a cane
— or worse, she could permanently lose feeling in her arms.
“When my daughter, Heidi, heard that, she started doing research on where I could see someone now, not five months
from now,” Judy says. “Heidi lives in Kalispell, Montana, and
started asking around about neurologists there at Kalispell Regional Healthcare.”
Heidi was able to connect her mom with Mary Strauss, RN,
the international medical services coordinator for Kalispell
Regional Healthcare (KRH). Mary provides a unique service
at KRH in that she works directly with international patients,
making sure that their concerns are addressed. Mary works out
the patient schedule, arranges for accommodations, and even
arranges for transportation to and from appointments.
Mary provided peace of mind for the Hieberts and was able to
get Judy in to see a neurologist within two weeks.
“Mary was so professional and caring and really made everything seem so doable. She dealt with us so personally that I was
