PRESIDENT’S COLUMN
It was amazing that the weather cooperated long
enough so that we could get in our ice fishing contest.
The winners of the contest were: Marty Zaremba with
an 11 ¼ inch Crappie; and Paula Philippart with a 7
½ inch
Blue Gill. Both of them
received $35 each and donated
it back to the club for the fish
stocking fund.
I hope you made it out to
our Super Bowl party, and the
Wild Game Dinner. I would
like to give out a special thank
you to Superior Game Ranch
who graciously donated the
Wild Boar, the Water Buffalo, and also some Bear for
the Wild Game Dinner.
We had a lot of nice Bucks at our Big Buck Night.
Congratulations to all the lucky hunters: Carey
Sevenson , Adam Rott, Fred Koby, Joe Costa, Rick
Kovach, Carey Stevenson, Chris Curtis, Don Bishop,
Tom Hesch, Page Meyers and all the others.
Coming up March 10th, will be the Multi-Lakes
Pheasant Hunt. The cost is $85 per hunter, with sign
up at the bar - or contact Marshall Maybrier or Terry
Smart.
The spring swap day will be held March 18th,
9AM to 2PM in the main clubhouse. Come on out
and buy, sell or trade of your sporting gear. Cost per
table is five dollars per member and the second table
is free.
If you don't have a CPL license, there are two
classes currently scheduled: March 24th and May 12th.
With the weather warming up we will be doing a
lot more shooting around the club. So, the Range
Officer’s classes are scheduled for March 18th, March
28th, and another April 1st. If you're interested,
please contact Andy Lynch.
See you around the club, ~ Sam

~ Ice Is Nice 2012 ~
T
he ice King (Ron DuBois) stood on the shore of ancient Lake
Reed in the present day Kingdom of Multi-Lakes. King Ron
contemplated the dire situation: the weather gods were ruining his
yearly tournament. Had he not made the necessary sacrifices to
the ice god Budweiser?
Participants from a hundred leagues
away would be a arriving in ten days and
the sacred tournament grounds were still
an angry swirling liquid mass where there should have been glass-smooth ice.
King Ron did what any good King would do. After consulting with his advisors
and his fair Queen Piper he decided to double his sacrifices to Budweiser and the
lesser
god
Miller.
The temperatures soon plummeted
and King Ron decreed from the
podium: “There Will Be Ice”
And ice there was. A white castle
with twin smoke stacks was erected on
the shore by Lords Kendra, Zavits,
Cohurst, Carlson, Zogta, Wilkerson, and
Franklin. On the day of the tournament
all were admitted wherein Queen Piper
bestowed food and warmth upon the
masses.
Following further sacrifices King
Ron decreed: “There will Be Fish” And
there were fish.
Newly knighted (new member) Lord
Andy Russel stood guard all day. His
lordship Mike Mermen donated new
fishing rods for tournament victors:
Urchins Shelly LaFave , Will Paige,
Evan and Brady Carlson, and Stephen
Gendelman all received new ice rods.
Princess Paula Phillipart and his Hindness Marty Zaremba donated their booty
back to the Kings’ fish fund.
All had such a good time, that subjects
were throwing cash at King and Queen
DuBois. The King’s treasury amassed $325
for this year’s fish fund. All the Kings men
and their carts made it home safely.
Save the Queen and princess Lynn. (They

As the winter club activities are coming
to a close, we enter into hopefully the last few
weeks of winter.
Soon we will be gearing up for all the fun
spring and summer events. Skip with the car shows, Jeff
with the fly fishing group, Lynn busy planning the first
flea market, hopefully walleye fishing, and the possible
return of bike week.
Thank you to those that run these events and
contribute to making our club what it is, as well as those
that may show up and participate.
If you are considering using our facility for your
event please hurry to reserve your date , the spots are
filling up fast!!
Hope to see you soon,
MTB
~ Membership Secretary ~
I had an interesting discussion with another
member after the February Chairman’s
Meeting. We were discussing the membership
count and how the many applications were
on hand for the March New Member Meeting. I told
him that we were on track for about another 30
applications and that we usually get about 80% follow
through. I told him the count of Regular, Working and
Probationary members is 643, which is 357 below the
by-law limit of 1000.
He mentioned that the 1000 would seem to be an
easy target to hit if every one of the 643 Regular,
Working and Probationary members just brought in
one new member especially if they brought a family
member or friend in. I said it would be even easier to
hit if the other 364 other members were to help also.
I can’t stress enough to the membership that we all
should make an effort to show off our club and stress
the attributes and benefits that we have to offer.
See you around the Club!
Don’t forget to sponsor at least one new member!
~ Mark Geiger
~ Recording Secretary ~
Well were off to a good start this year.
Your President and Vice President have some
Great ideas for the year
I’m writing this before the Wild Game Dinner but
I’m sure the food will be great again this year. The
kitchen crew does a great job every year, and Dave has
said he’s got a few really great prizes for the raffle - so I
hope to see you all there.
I’m also working on the revision of the By-Laws. If
you have any suggestions, would like to see any errors
corrected, or know of something that needs to be
changed please write it up. You need to submit the
change before next month’s meeting. Either email
them to me or drop them in my mail box at the club.
~Rich “Doc” Johnson
~ Treasurer ~
Hi all, Happy March. About three more
weeks and Winter will be gone. I am sure the
ice fishing guys aren’t real happy this year
with the weather but the rest of us are not
going to complain.
I know our Veterans Memorial Committee wants to
do the Dedication Ceremony for the project this
summer. That means time is starting to run out to
purchase your brick to honor our Members of the
Military. For as little as $60.00 you can be part of
something to be proud of, that will be around for many
years to come. I had a Father that served in the Army in
World War I, a Brother that served in the Army,
another in the Navy and a Son that was a Marine. I bet
most of us can come-up with a reason to buy a brick.
Let’s do it soon, so they can start building.
Last this Month, Bingo needs help badly. This event
makes the Club a lot of money. It would be a shame if
it went away. There are many different jobs that need to
be done, so anyone can help. Call the Chairmen or
show up by 6pm on Tuesday.
Later, Dave;

Chairmen’s Meeting Minutes – February 1st 2012
Dave Fisher – Benchmarked our financials against
another local club’s. Barry is dealing with some
challenges in his life, so if you can’t get a hold of Barry,
call Dave. Reminder to mark money envelopes with
name, number, committee, etc. This year marks the
Club’s 70th anniversary.
Mike Beattie – Ceiling tiles have been donated & we are
thinking about re-working the ceiling in the meeting room.
Looking for someone to oversee the project. Mike
inquired about the concept of a Demo Day with
committees in full operation, and in conjunction with Bass
Pro & some of their vendors. Discussion followed. Also
considering a nursery area to start replacement trees.
Mark Geiger – 140 regular, 391 working, 113
probationary members for a total of 644 of our 1000 limit.
Our overall total is 1008.
Sam Mullins – Will be holding a strategic planning
meeting. Working with the Bike Week rental. By-Laws
Committee meeting on February 6th. The state of
Michigan has raised liquor prices so that may affect our
prices at the bar. Getting some estimates for portions of
the ceiling work, discussion followed.
Chairman:
Jeff Parker – Fly Fishing class on April 21st, and
considering an advanced class on April 28th. Fly tying
classes are underway on Tuesday nights.
Clint Double – Woodswalk Shoot on Saturday.
Dave Leonard – Multi-Laker deadlines will be more
strictly enforced this year. Reminded chairmen to get
event info submitted 2 or 3 months in advance.
Glen Kruckenberg – The last Texas Hold’Em brought in a
very nice profit despite Sundays attendance being down.
John Miller – Introduced himself as the Pin Shoot
Chairman along with Bill Stumpf.
Andy Lynch – Range Office training is coming up.
Jon Lash – Swap Day changed to March 18th. 2 or more
Swap Days being planned, maybe at Good Old Days.
Marty Zaremba – Took down the big dead oak by the
deck with help from Rich Carlson’s son and others.
Jan Podkul – Web site hits were way up in January.
Wondered if anyone was experiencing long load times.
Wayne Hoyt – Jr. Rifle going well, with room for more.
Jr. Pellet Rifle on 1st & 3rd Saturdays
Chet Dymon – Multi-Lakes will be helping out at
Outdoorama with Hunters Ed. And Pellet Rifle.
Rich Carlson – Ice fishing derby was very successful.
Asked for opinions on a tip jar for fish stocking.

A Call to Duty?
Fellow members, we want to share a few thoughts
about our Veterans Memorial Project. Thank you so
much if you have already contributed. The early
contributions have made it possible to order a black
granite base and make arrangements for the bronze
service plaques. With continued support we are on
track to build and dedicate the Memorial in early
summer.
We know you all want to support our veterans and
we can tell you that nearly all the people we talk to
support our efforts. One comment that we have
heard, however, is: Why do we need a Veterans
memorial here? We are a conservation club.
Multi-Lakes has become so much more than a
conservation club, or even a sportsmen’s club. MultiLakes, in our seventy years, has become a community
institution. Yes, a community institution! We are as
important to the future and well being of our children
as the schools, churches, and local governments.
Multi-Lakes is the very embodiment of a free and
open society. Where else do you stand alongside your
sons, daughters, and friends and recite the Pledge of
Allegiance? Where else do Police departments train
alongside, and with the help of, the citizens they are
sworn to protect?
With our support and generosity hundreds of Boy
and Girl Scouts come here to learn many of their skills
and values. Our members have trained thousands of
youngsters in safe and responsible gun use and made
sure they recognize that they have the right to own
them.
We cannot survive a diluted Second
Amendment. Junior shotgun, archery, slingshot and
air rifle shooters learn their skills and values here. We
are evermore a family club, and families here come
first
Will we continue to set a constant example of
freedom and patriotism by honoring those who give us
that freedom?
Be proud to be a member of Multi-Lakes. Spread
the word.
We don’t sing:
“All the Little Children of the
World” We sing: “God Bless America”!
~ R. C. Carlson
From the Audit Committee
Chairman:
In response to many inquiries by the
membership, an Audit Committee is
being reconfigured, and will soon be on
its way to putting our financial controls
in order.
With a $1.3 million budget, it’s more
important than ever to make sure we
take care of business in “good and
decent order,” and in accordance with
acceptable business practices.
Members work too hard to have
doubts about how the association’s assets
are being handled and the committee will
work to ease those concerns with the aim
of building membership morale.
The committee’s task WILL NOT
look back, but rather look forward.
This will not be an easy task since it’s
been some time since we’ve undertaken
the task. I am looking at a two-year
effort to get our house back in order.
By year’s end however, we hope to
have a basic audit performed on our
various accounts.
Our overall plan is to review our cashhandling, bookkeeping and inventory
policies and procedures, develop what
we need, and write a new manual to
work with going forward.
If you have a background in
accounting, bookkeeping, auditing or
general business procedures we sure
would welcome your assistance.
If interested, please contact me at:

Board of Directors Meeting Minutes – February 8th 2012
Chairman of the Board Matt Philippart called the meeting to
order at 7:30 pm. Matt led the Board in the Pledge of Allegiance
and the Conservation Pledge. Officers present: Sam Mullins,
Mike Beattie, Rich Johnson, Mark Geiger and Dave Fisher.
Directors present: Matt Philippart, Dave Chappel, Marshall
Maybrier, Mick McCanham, Terry Smart, Mark Torigian, Rich
Carlson, Jon Lash, Marty Zaremba, and Past President Russ
DeVriendt. Interested members present: Jan Podkul, Jim Kern
Charlie Stevens, Harvey Cooper, Ron Dubois, Mike Wilczynski,
Larry Hutton, Adam Rott, Glen Kruckenberg, Cal Kittinger, Dan
Peltier. Guests: Michael Canales
MINUTES:
Sam Mullins/Mick McCanham: Motion to approve the Board of
Director’s minutes with changes from the January 11, 2011
meeting. Motion Carried Unanimously.
PEOPLE TO SEE THE BOARD:
Terry Smart #407 Terry proposed to pursue a Meat Hog Hunt at
Ubly Trophy Ranch, a 160 Acre fenced ranch (preserve) in
Michigan’s thumb area. The Hunt would be for 10 Club
Members and consist of two nights lodging (Friday and
Saturday) on the ranch. Whole hog roast on Saturday night
would be included. Other meal provisions would be provided by
the Multi-Lakes Pheasant hunt committee or alternative
provisions would be worked out between the Hunters by
assignment. The Lodge and hunting grounds would be reserved
exclusively to our group only on that weekend. Guide service
and field dressing of the hog after the kill would be provided as
well as the use of the walk in cooler service for each hunter.
Weapons suggested: handguns (.357 cal or larger), Shotguns
with slugs, bows (45 lbs. and up) Center fire rifles or Black
Powder (.45 cal or larger) Hunter Orange required.
Cost would be approximately $400 per hunter for one meat hog
two nights lodging and hog roast Saturday night.
• Hogs are approximately 180-300 lbs. and a cleaning service is
offered.
• ($50.00 extra if food assignments cannot be worked out
• $50.00 per person Tip for guide service.
• Total per Hunter would be approximately $500 - $550 to be
paid in full to reserve spot.
• $50.00 from each person would go back to Multi-Lakes.
They are looking at dates in September or October.
Terry Smart/Dave Fisher: Motion to allow Terry Smart and the
Pheasant Hunt Committee to pursue a Meat Hog Hunt. Motion
Carried Unanimously.
Adam Rott #155 Adam approached the board for approval of
purchasing 8 new 3D targets for archery. Adam stated that the
targets were getting pretty worn out and that arrows were going
through targets and they needed to be replaced. Adam stated
he looked at one site and he could purchase 8 Reinhardt targets
in various shapes and or some fun animals for approximately
$2200. These targets offered replaceable center sections that
could be replaced if they got worn out. Marshall Maybrier asked
if they had planned to purchase extra replacement centers for
the targets in case the company went out of business or the
target became obsolete.
Questions were asked as to if the price included shipping and if
Adam had checked other targets. Discussion followed on
possibly repairing older targets. Jon Lash stated when he
chaired 3D there was a guy on the west side of the state that
could repair the center sections of the targets at a pretty good
price and he would see if he could find the information to contact
them. Rich Johnson/Mark Geiger: Motion to allow Adam Rott
16
as 3D archery chairman to spend up to $2500 for replacement
targets. Motion Tabled until March meeting so Adam could
get put together a proposal with prices shipping and what
replacements would inserts would cost and comparison
prices from other companies.
Cal Kittinger suggested Adam might consider writing a grant
application to the NRA to fund the cost of targets.
Ron Dubois #1494 Ron asked for permission to have a
Donation Jar placed on the bar and to be able to also take it to
skeet and trap or other shooting venues to help fund the fish
stocking program. Ron said he was looking into stocking
crappie, perch and minnows this year. Dave Fisher/Mark
Geiger: Motion to allow the fish stocking committee to place a
donation jug on the bar and to take to other shooting venues on
the grounds with the respected chairman’s permission from
meeting night in February until May a period of 4 months.
Motion Carried Unanimously.
Mike Wilczynski #1048, Larry Hutton #659 Mike and Larry
came to the board to pitch the idea of a Bowling for Burns
tournament in Commerce Township to make money for the U of
M Burn center. Larry said they had already secured the Eagles
Club as a sponsor and their endorsement. Mike said the event
would be held in June some time and they are not asking for any
money but rather would like to use the Multi-Lakes logo and say
that we endorsed them on their advertising. Mike said all the
proceeds from the event would go to the University Burn Center
it was a great cause and Lots of firefighters will be attending as
well as others and it would be good name recognition for the
club. He said the event will be held at Wonderland Lanes on
Richardson in Commerce Township. If the board allows him to
use the logo he will bring back the artwork for approval it is being
designed by the graphic artist that does the work for Wonderland
Lanes. Mark Torigian/Mike Beattie: Motion to endorse the
“Bowling for Burns” tournament and allow them to use the MultiLakes logo in their advertising. Motion Carried Unanimously.
Michael Canales Michael is a representative from the campaign
of Newt Gingrich and asked if the campaign would be allowed to
distribute literature on club grounds during different events. He
was informed by the board that it was against club policy to allow
one particular candidate to do such and that the club would be
more than happy to do a rental with them so they could do their
own fund raiser.
Cal Kittinger #1367 Cal informed the club he had acquired a
Colt XSE Commander .45 ACP all tricked out for the October
special raffle. He said the tickets for the Tommy gun were going
great. He also said he was seeking permission to sell not more
than 100 tickets at $20.00 a piece for the Charlie Daniels
Autographed fiddle as a pre event fund raiser for the FNRA
Banquet.
Dan Peltier #725 Dan asked if the club was going to do
anything with the trunk of the oak tree that was cut down, and
said that he would try to make a couple of tables from the wood if
someone would cut a couple of 6-8” slabs for him.
Marshall Maybrier/Rich Johnson: Motion to allow Dan Peltier
to use the oak tree that was cut down to try to make tables.
Motion Carried Unanimously.
PRESIDENT'S REPORT:
Chairmen changes: President Sam Mullins asked to remove
Rich LaFave from meeting night entertainment and to add Larry
”Skip” Cohorst. Sam Mullins/Mark Torigian: Motion to approve
chairman changes as stated. Motion Carried Unanimously.
Sam Mullins/Dave Fisher: Motion to receive and file
strategic Planning Report. Motion Carried Unanimously.
Sam discussed that he wanted to file the liquor report since
the Club Manager was absent. Discussion followed: Mickey
stated we needed to have a profit margin on all liquor not just
some and that the profit margin should be equal for all
consumables and that a POS system would help. He also said
we needed to look at the liquor that we carried and if something
was not selling to discontinue it and to look at carrying well
brands and not using top shelf for everything. He said we need
to decide on what to do to turn this bar around it should be one
of the most profitable enterprises in the club. The Board decided
to bring the matter back next month so the Club Manager could
give his report.
Sam Mullins/Mike Beattie: Motion to give the owner of
Superior Game Ranch and his wife tickets for the Wild Game
Dinner and to place an ad for them in the Multi-Laker in
exchange for them donating over 300 pounds of wild pig to the
Wild Game Dinner. Motion Carried Unanimously.
Sam Mullins/Mark Torigian: Motion to pursue the cost of
the grids and lights for the meeting room ceiling. Discussion
followed many suggestions were made as to how to approach
this project. Marshall Maybrier has secured the ceiling tiles at no
cost that are an approximate value of $5000 making a
substantial saving in this project. The Board’s consensus was
that this project needed to be planned completely before the
project started with plans and pricing that included what was
going to take place at bingo and the fish fry since they would be
affected and to find a project manager that would stick with the
project and see that it was completed from start to end. Sam
stated that the approximate costs were: Grid $2400, Lights $2200,
Diffusers $240, Donated ceiling tile $0. Clarification of the
motion: Motion to pursue a plan and pricing to repair the
meeting room ceiling. Motion Carried Unanimously.
The subject of the annual Car Cruse was brought up. The
grounds were approved by the board for use of Good Old Days
on August 25 2012. Don Navigato was not present so Mark
Geiger related his points for use of the ball diamond during Good
Old Days. In previous meetings with the Officers the
suggestions that Don had for the Ball Diamond could be
incorporated elsewhere on the grounds, whereas the ball
diamond was the only place the car show could be held.
Discussion followed. Marshall Maybrier/Mark Torigian: Motion
to allow the Annual car show to be held on the Ball Diamond on
August 25 2012. Motion Carried Unanimously.
Jim Kern asked the Board of Directors to allow the car show
participants to use the drive to exit the grounds around 3 pm or
3:30 so as not to damage paint jobs on the gravel exiting the
club. Approved by the Board.
VICE PRESIDENT'S REPORT:
Mike Beattie/Mark Torigian: Motion to approve the dates
as presented. Motion Carried Unanimously.
Mike brought up the idea of a demo days at the club that he
would like to organize. He would like to contact vendors such as
Bass Pro Shops or other outdoor goods stores and some
manufactures and have them bring out some equipment
firearms, bows , hunting equipment and camping gear for
members to try out and shoot. He would solicit the vendors for
donations to raffle off some of the demo equipment at a BBQ
held at the end of the event. He proposes having a beer tent set
up in the BBQ grill area the participants would be given a wrist

General Membership Meeting Minutes – January 18th
MLCA President Sam Mullins called the
meeting to order at 8:00 PM. Sam led
the members in the Pledge of Allegiance
and the Conservation Pledge. Sam then
welcomed all the new members, and
acknowledged the Past Presidents in
attendance: Tony Katopodis, Russ
DeVriendt, Jim Kern, Dan St. Aubin,
Dave Fisher, Pete Cesaro Sr. and Skip
Worden.
John LaFave/Rich Carlson: Motion to
approve the membership meeting
minutes as printed in the Multi-Laker.
Rich Johnson: Stated there was a
correction in the membership meeting
minutes that he incorrectly wrote, that
the check presentation by Sam Mullins
and Rich LaFave last month should of
read Hospitality House instead of
Harbor House. Motion to approve the
minutes as corrected. Motion Carried
Unanimously.
Rich Carlson’s report on the memorial
should have read as follows: “Rich
stated that he is moving along on the
monument he has been pricing bases
and they run from $45,000-10,000. He
has found a vendor to supply him with a
solid black granite base that is 24x18 for
$7,000 they require a 50% deposit and it
takes 4-6 months lead time. Mick
McCanham asked if he had found
cheaper avenues and what the prices
might be. Rich Carlson informed the
board he had a price on a granite
veneer base and the price of it was
$6,500 so the solid would be a better
deal and the guy doing the solid base
would include installing the military
emblems with the price. The cost of the
emblems are approximately $2500.”
Changes were approved in the February
board meeting.
